Digest

The Digest- Gameweek Thirteen

The Tottenham juggernaut rolled on relentlessly at the Hawthorns, once again providing Fantasy managers with plenty of attacking options to consider. Newcastle showed their steel at Old Trafford and now have their sights set on Chelsea, ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures…

The Player

For the past few weeks, the vast majority of the Tottenham focus had been on Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale as the midfield duo racked up the Fantasy points. When fit, the Dutchman’s consistency is never in question but Bale’s continually impressive returns presented many Fantasy managers with a quandary- acquiring both players seemed a viable proposition, given the club’s run of fixtures.

Saturday’s win at West Brom brought Emmanuel Adebayor firmly into our thinking once again. The Togo international had drifted off the radar slightly after a six game scoring drought but a brace against Aston Villa last Monday was followed by another double at the Hawthorns- in the space of five days, then, Adebayor bagged as many league goals as Luis Suarez has all season.

Harry Redknapp’s acquisition of both Adebayor and Scott Parker has turned Tottenham into one of the most lethal attacking sides in the Premier League- of the ten games the duo have played, the club have won nine and drawn one. Adebayor has now returned more Fantasy points than both Van der Vaart and Bale and is the sixth top scorer in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with 75 points- priced at 8.8, he still looks a bargain right now.

A closer look at his points sums up his consistency- only twice in those ten appearances has Adebayor failed to either score or assist and with Spurs’ upcoming schedule still looking promising- added to a double gameweek 20- a move for all three of the Tottenham “Holy Trinity” over the next couple of weeks doesn’t seem such a bold move after all.

The Team

While there’s little doubt they led a charmed life at Old Trafford on Saturday, the bottom line is that Newcastle came through unscathed. Many had expected a result similar to the previous week’s trip to the blue half of Manchester but Alan Pardew’s side clung on and remain in the top four.

This week’s home clash with Chelsea should hold little fear for Newcastle; with that 3-1 defeat at City their only loss, a defeat to Andre Villas-Boas’ side would be a far bigger shock that we could have possibly perceived at the beginning of the season. Yohan Cabaye’s guile and steel, Demba Ba’s goals and Gabriel Obertan’s pace and directness have added to the solid foundation and work-ethic already in place and Newcastle look ripe for Fantasy investment once again after what many had expected to be a tricky three-match period.

With Hatem Ben Arfa returning from fitness, a defence that has conceded just 12 goals this season and includes, in the shape of Ryan Taylor, the second-top scoring FPL defender, there are plenty of options available ahead of a run of four games that sees Pardew’s side face (nor, SWA, WBA, bol). Ba, in particular, should see plenty of Fantasy managers acquiring his services for that stretch- similar to Emmanuel Adebayor, he’s proven to be one of the most consistent Fantasy performers this season, scoring or assisting in seven of his previous eight gameweeks and at 6.8 continues to offer outstanding value.

The Talking Point

Yesterday’s off-field events concerning Gary Speed put everything into perspective. At times, football can bring unbridled happiness and fuel the passion of millions around the globe but Speed’s untimely death served a harsh reminder that, essentially, it’s really nothing more than twenty-two men kicking a ball about a patch of grass.

Clean sheets and points accrued have never seemed so insignificant with the news of the Welshman’s heartbreaking passing. Swansea took the decision to play their game against Aston Villa but with many of the protagonists clearly affected, the game itself seemed a secondary matter, dwarfed by the horrifying circumstances that had gone before….

The action moved on to Anfield, where Roberto Mancini adopted a far more conservative approach than many had expected. We can only speculate, but the previous day’s result at Old Trafford may have affected the City manager’s thinking. With a draw at Liverpool enough to preserve a five point advantage over United, Mancini adopted a 4-5-1, with Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both benched.

Their attacking edge blunted, City were fortunate to escape with a draw; their average shots per away dropped significantly, Sergio Aguero could barely get into the game and in the end, only Joe Hart’s heroics kept their unbeaten record intact. The decision to rein in their attacking tendencies almost backfired yesterday and Fantasy managers will be hoping Mancini banishes such notions with immediate effect.

With 9 goals in his previous ten games, Balotelli was City’s form striker coming into this game and his frustration boiled over when Mancini finally introduced him to the proceeding halfway through the second half. Two yellows in quick succession saw him dismissed- he will now miss the Carling Cup match with Arsenal tomorrow evening.

In a sense, this could even boost Balotelli’s chances of a start against Norwich next weekend; with Dzeko likely to start against the Gunners on Tuesday evening, the Italian will be the fresher of the two come the weekend. City’s crucial Champions League home clash with Bayern Munich next midweek could also play a part in Mancini’s thinking, though- Sergio Aguero seems the likeliest starter of the trio against Paul Lambert’s side and a viable captaincy option, at that.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

If you do make it VDV since you will have that spurs coverage. It could look brilliant if larsson/walters/ohara puts up some numbers. if it bites you, you will have time to at least get him back before the double.

With the fixtures Spurs got now, I don't mind all 3 Spur attackers.. but getting back VDV at any stage later might be a tough one as he doesn't seem to slow down = too costly 🙁
Imagine taking RVP after a month if he continues like this 🙂

bold to drop rvp. i would lose ramsey at least. if you take a gamble tossing rvp you could try to score big w/ hernandez/rooney/ba...if the latter then you could grab mata.

Personally Ramsey is leaving my team after this week.

Sinclair was dumped a few weeks back to retain Walters, with the view to bringing him back. Think Sess has flopped so badly for me, Walters is staying and Sinclair is coming back in.

We used to play a strange version of Fantasy Football at school about 15 years ago - there were 10 of us and at the start of the season all 20 teams were put in 2 hats (10 good teams, 10 not so good teams) and you drew 1 from each. You then got every player from those teams and could trade players between each other. Often sweets (chomps and wham bars) and money came into the equation. Then you had to submit your staring 11 to the scorer (me) each week on the friday on a piece of paper. Those 11 players were matched to FF points given in The Sun, with all winnings going to the overall winner (100 quid) in 1p coins at the end of the season. The good old days...

        Considering the Xmas period,
        Of the top six,
Spurs have the best fixtures till GW-21 (includes a double home game in GW-21)
        Arsenal have 2nd best fixtures
Newcastle, City, United, Liverpool 3rd best
Chelsea have just 4 easy fixtures

    Need some advice guys.

    Current team is as follows:
    Howard - Ruddy
    JE - BAE - Verma - Ward - Simpson
    VdV - Sessa - Walters - Mata - Tiote
    RvP - Ade - Bendy

Already used my FT to bring in Verma for Bos (I know. I removed him only this week !!!)
Any other issue needs addressing ?

Hello peeps. Had a shocking GW (37pts) despite it all looking so good on paper before kick off.

I'm now after getting rid of Bendy and getting in Ade. Have 2FTs but not sure where to free up the cash from elsewhere. An obvious one would be VDV to Bale and Bendy to Ade but I'm 0.2 short 🙁

    Any suggestions?

Anybody looking at Romeu (only 4.6)? Had a decent first start against Wol. Should be able to replace Mikel from that DM spot. Not too much attacking potential but he could come in occasionally for corners and possible assists here & there.

With news that mancini will rest all his players for the weekend i'm tempted to captain
Silva, Richards, Baines or Adebayor over RVP

The norwich game could be a cricket score, stoke will be exhausted after europa and should get trashed, and adebayor in form against bolton.. RVP is fully capable of a huge score vs wigan, but after wengers comments it seems the easiest game for him to be rested

True, I did it because he was at home (where he has a good record) against a depleted Wolves side while RVP had a decent Fulham side to go against.
I wouldn't ever captain a defender, especially when RVP is fit and up against Wigan.
I don't want to talk you out of it, and it seems you are gonna do it regardless so good on you.

Why would you captain Silva if you think Mancini is going to be resting loads of players? If Mancini is going to 'rest' a few for the must win against Bayern, Silva would definitely be one of those in my opinion.

Rvp is 'costs' 13.1, his value for me is 12.5.

    Olsson, Enrique, Hibbert, (Rangel), (STaylor)
    Drenthe, Silva, Mata, Bale, (Ramsey)
    Sturridge, Adebayor, RVP

I havn't given the Xmas fixtures a good look yet, but will be intrigued as to who has the best fixtures, and who'll get rotated from the big teams. Might be a good idea looking at some of the mid-table teams as they're less likely to be rotated.

I regret having Suarez for the first 11 weeks.
Since I got rid, he has got 6 points in two weeks, Hernandez - 18
Neither are setting the FPL world on fire, and I don't see it happening any time soon.

with liverpool i just think defence is the way to go, if any

may be wrong but really cant see adam n suarez hurting me that much while kenny continues to play without carroll up top with suarez

Suarez has been playing real well, against tough oppo... only matter of time before he bangs them in

Adam pens, fk, conrners - good games. best value at 8.8. Aprart from bale imo

Adam is your best bet with Liverpool. He's on corners and possibly penos? And does seem to get into the box a lot..

              When is Gerrard back?
Eh, doesn't bother me anyway, I wouldn't sell any of my midfield for him, Bale, Mata, Silva and VDV (when he plays) are better picks.

Lol. Suarez. I wouldn't want to have any other forwards except for Ba, Adebayor, RVP and Hernandez at the moment.

He played left midfield against Chelsea, and almost scored a goal. Possibly still playing OOP against Sunderland looks appetising.
