Watchlist

The Watchlist – Adel Taarabt

The enigmatic architect of QPR’s euphoric promotion campaign, Adel Taarabt’s haul of 19 goals and 16 assists last season marked him out as the prime Fantasy Premier League (FPL) target from this term’s graduate teams. Undoubtedly skilful, the reproaches of selfishness and defensive negligence torpedoed his two top-flight seasons with Spurs but, with a starting berth for the Hoops seemingly assured, many backed the Moroccan magician to silence the doubters and light up the league.

Though initially priced at a thought-provoking 6.5, a lacklustre start to the campaign saw Taarabt’s investors running for cover long before his transportthemed fall from grace under Neil Warnock hit the back pages. Banished to the bench in November and assuming the role of bit-part player under the old regime, the Moroccan –with no goals or assists to his name- has even made Victor Moses seem particularly prolific this term.

Returning from the African Cup of Nations last weekend, Taarabt was immediately installed to the first-team by Mark Hughes. Partnering Shaun Wright-Phillips on the flanks against Wolves in an aggressive 4-4-2, he emerged with great credit from a threatening display by a ten-man QPR. His new manager was clearly delighted with the Moroccan’s contribution and, having pulled Taarabt out of his hat, Hughes appears little inclined to employ him as a bench-warmer over a run of games (bla FUL EVE bol) that should provide ample opportunity for attacking returns.

New acquisitions Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse have already made their mark in a QPR side that suffered earlier in the season from a glut of creators and a dearth of reliable finishers, and Taarabt looks set to benefit from having a more clinical outlet for his technical wizardry. With his price down to 5.8, Taarabt is now in direct competition with Joey Barton (5.8) and Shaun Wright-Phillips (5.9) for those looking to invest in QPR’s midfield over this favourable run.

Barton’s holding role may put him at a disadvantage from an FPL perspective in a setup that promises attack from the flanks, and with Taarabt presumably restored to direct free kicks, Barton’s potential looks more limited under the new regime. With two assists in his last four games, Wright-Phillips is doing his best to dispel his customary aura of frenetic impotence, but whilst Taarabt never looks far away from conjuring up a piece of magic, Wright-Phillips never looks far away from falling over his own feet.

With the wildcard window a homogenising influence on our squads, picking the right differentials has never been more important, and, with just 3% ownership, the new dawn at Loftus Road may well prove beneficial for this summer’s forgotten FPL favourite.

stilicho I never make predictions and I never will

I know the Redknapp > England transfer is imminent but does he not want to see the Spurs job through to CL next season or a title shot next year? Or does he think he has done enough with them and wants the England job as it will be a once in a lifetime opportunity?

If he does get the England job does he see the season out with Spurs and join England with only a month to prepare for the Euros?

i would venture he could do both jobs for a few months. in reality, how much work does an international manager really do? and he'd have many minions to do it for him anyway (some human, some canine 😉 )

If I were a football manager then England is the last job I'd take.

What you get is an average squad that is likely to let you down and 40 million of airheads who think it's good enough to win major tournaments and will turn against you at the first opportunity.

I totally disagree with this. I think it's good a player can express his support for his (ex) manager as it makes us twats have to re-evaluate our twisted perspective and attempt to understand what really is going on, rather than what we hope might be true.

The alternative is riding out Liverpool's tricky fixtures and benching him for the CC final.

The FA brought this on themselves and Capello was dead right to stand up for his captain and his principles. People must be innocent until proven guilty. A concept nicely demonstrated by the probable next England manager just today.

Blaming John Terry for this is bordering on hysteria.

I think the FA were entirely right to do what they did, there was no way Terry could continue as captain before a major tournament with this hanging over him. By making the decision themselves they took the pressure off Capello but instead he decides to attack the FA for doing him a favour.

What I can't get my head around is how Chelsea have had his court case delayed until after the season.
Surely if this case got to the court before the Euros, then the decision to strip him of the captaincy would be made after the verdict and there would have been no dispute between Capello and the FA.

Not really. Cases, particularly those concerning misdemeanors aren't generally allowed to excessively prejudice the running of a business. Cases are regularly scheduled to avoid this.

I agree it would have been difficult but I imagine it was also difficult going into a World Cup with Bobby Moore accused of shoplifting or Euro 96 with Terry Venables under investigation for financial irregularities. I'm fairly sure Steven Gerrard's status as vice captain remained while he was tried for punching a man five times in the head (in self defence of course).

Who knows what would have happened had they shown loyalty to John Terry. but I can't imagine a bigger FArce than the current situation and the FA deserve everything they get for sacrificing their captain to try and score cheap points with the press. Capello was right in what he said - it's a basic human right we afford to everyone, even those we don't like.

You really think he wouldn't have dropped him a captain anyway (even in the short term?) He took it off him for having an affair so it seems likely that he would have done the same for being charged with using racist language.

Evidently not because he just quite in protest! He was wrong to strip him of the captaincy over a rumour (which every newspaper has since admitted was false) and he'd be wrong to strip him for being accused of something.

Truth is that John Terry was stripped of the captaincy both times because the press demanded it (nicely summed up by Charlie Brooker here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4HjJ9KYyFM).

If only the press themselves were held to the same moral standard.

That's crazy talk. Constructive dismissal, is what it was.

As if the England captain wasn't a poisoned chalice before, I can't see anyone with any real options becoming England manager. The FA have done an enormous disservice to England with this policy.

And - though he's a tw@t - Terry is innocent until proven guilty, I believe. Anyone but Capello 'punishing' him before a verdict is simply wrong.

They punished Rio Ferdinand for missing a drugs test without a hearing. They also stopped Bowyer and Woodgate being selected before their verdict in court.

Syd, that is an ignorant comment. Capello left because he got undermined and stuck to his principles. Blaming Terry is something what a moron would do.

If JT had done what any decent person in such a high profile role would have done and stepped aside until the court case had been heard then this matter would have never arisen.

With case being put back to July for some strange reason the FA had to act.

So: he's accused of a crime that he'll strenuously argue he's innocent of, and he should step aside?

I don't like myself for even entertaining the idea of engaging with you on this subject. John Terry was England captain, with quite possibly his last chance to lead his country in a major tournament. He is denying these accusations against him so why should he step aside? don't answer that, I want to forget I ever cyber-met you. Plonker.

Well... you've managed a decent rank with that strategy... so fair play... but personally i wouldn't keep a non-playing sub on the bench... i've needed mine a few times so far already...

In answer to your question though i would probably go siggy instead of taarabt for ferguson and save myself the 4 pointer this week...

Yeah i thought i was doing alright....

If i get Siggy in I'll be doubling up on Swans midfield cos i already have Sinclair. And the reason i was gonna do it tonight was because I'll lose 0.1 tonight if Taylor falls in prices, which he looks like he will.

Ah now I just found it funny, didn't mean any harm by it. My understanding is that you were taking a 4 point hit for a defender (which is usually a no no) and maybe getting Taarabt might not be that great an idea just yet, he hasn't proven his worth.

Taarabt for a punt, could pay off but the worst (hopefully) that could happen is he gets 2 pts which is still 2 more than the combo of Ferguson and Taylor for this week.

And no way of playing a full team without those two? It's a risk but still I don't think the hit is worth it. Maybe Taarabt will come good, I hope he does for ya I just haven't been convinced of him yet.

Well I kinda want to get Taarabt into the team this week because against a Blackburn team who have struggled horribly defensively plus more problems at the back with Givet suspended and Lowe injured...it doesn't look like it will get much better. And to get him i need to sell Taylor to fund it thus the 4pt hit.

And just to clear up, i wasn't getting at you or anyone earlier, just wasn't to keen on the "noob" comment, was only looking for help.

Ah I can understand the noob thing being annoying, it's just a bit of stick though. I even get it when I ask questions 😀 Yeah it's a rough call. If blackburn are still in bits Taarabt could be worth the punt. That said, I could easily see them out with something to prove after the 7-1 loss. But what I'd always say is if you have a gut feeling then go with it, don't be too swayed by what others say here.

The hit is because i don't want to lose the value because Taylor will probably fall tonight.

I have Zamora since last week and thought i might take a punt on Taarabt for the next few games, see if Hughes can help him get his game back on track.

FPL seems to be totally random in price drops for long-term red flagged players. Ba went down about 0.2 in 3 weeks, yet up 0.4 in 3 days.

i could be wrong but isn't there something about once a player is flagged they decrease in price @ a rate of 2.5 times slower than normal, i dont know what the story is when the flag is removed... price protected for a few days & then back to normal?

Bought him for 5, but wouldn't play him again until week 28, so looking to get rid. Want a Chelsea def for next four weeks. Probably buy Skrtel for Liverpool cover afterwards for a greater strike threat.

I want a Chelsea defender for next four matches and would love Cahill because of the price, but they paid a lot of money for Luiz and there's no clue who will partner Terry when he's back. Thinking of going for Cole as he's nailed on and I have the money, but knowing my luck he will only get the same points as Cahill before I sell.
