Watchlist

The Watchlist – Adel Taarabt

The enigmatic architect of QPR’s euphoric promotion campaign, Adel Taarabt’s haul of 19 goals and 16 assists last season marked him out as the prime Fantasy Premier League (FPL) target from this term’s graduate teams. Undoubtedly skilful, the reproaches of selfishness and defensive negligence torpedoed his two top-flight seasons with Spurs but, with a starting berth for the Hoops seemingly assured, many backed the Moroccan magician to silence the doubters and light up the league.

Though initially priced at a thought-provoking 6.5, a lacklustre start to the campaign saw Taarabt’s investors running for cover long before his transportthemed fall from grace under Neil Warnock hit the back pages. Banished to the bench in November and assuming the role of bit-part player under the old regime, the Moroccan –with no goals or assists to his name- has even made Victor Moses seem particularly prolific this term.

Returning from the African Cup of Nations last weekend, Taarabt was immediately installed to the first-team by Mark Hughes. Partnering Shaun Wright-Phillips on the flanks against Wolves in an aggressive 4-4-2, he emerged with great credit from a threatening display by a ten-man QPR. His new manager was clearly delighted with the Moroccan’s contribution and, having pulled Taarabt out of his hat, Hughes appears little inclined to employ him as a bench-warmer over a run of games (bla FUL EVE bol) that should provide ample opportunity for attacking returns.

New acquisitions Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse have already made their mark in a QPR side that suffered earlier in the season from a glut of creators and a dearth of reliable finishers, and Taarabt looks set to benefit from having a more clinical outlet for his technical wizardry. With his price down to 5.8, Taarabt is now in direct competition with Joey Barton (5.8) and Shaun Wright-Phillips (5.9) for those looking to invest in QPR’s midfield over this favourable run.

Barton’s holding role may put him at a disadvantage from an FPL perspective in a setup that promises attack from the flanks, and with Taarabt presumably restored to direct free kicks, Barton’s potential looks more limited under the new regime. With two assists in his last four games, Wright-Phillips is doing his best to dispel his customary aura of frenetic impotence, but whilst Taarabt never looks far away from conjuring up a piece of magic, Wright-Phillips never looks far away from falling over his own feet.

With the wildcard window a homogenising influence on our squads, picking the right differentials has never been more important, and, with just 3% ownership, the new dawn at Loftus Road may well prove beneficial for this summer’s forgotten FPL favourite.

stilicho I never make predictions and I never will

Is Bogdan first choice keeper now at Bolton. Just thinking of a cheap second keeper.

you might be better off with a non-playing keeper than Bogdan.... at least then you'd get 0 if your 1st choice gets injured...

          roke matches

it was his stubbornness and questionable tastes in the transfer market that saw him unstuck over a 38 game season

Working with a set group of players and in a tournament setting could be ideal to his strengths. Would take no crap from muppets like Terry and Rooney either

he has his flaws without doubt, but he's a top notch tactician. The consistency and quality of Liverpool in the CL under him was excellent. A plan for every opponent. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan etc you cant put that all down to luck

He went backwards towards the end at LFC but I reckon his strengths are ideal for international football

Everyone's eyes will be on Ba. But that's as far as it is going to get. In my humble opinion, I would be surprised if a big money transfer or Ba could go through, as I doubt that any insurance company would underwrite it due to his medical records. His knee is clearly a liability. We got him on a free, and pay him a small basic topped up by massive appearance and goal bonuses. So very low risk. Any transfer would have to be around 10 mill and 70+ grand a week. I just don't see it. Does anyone who understands football insurance better than me care to comment? Am i just living in hope?

But the whole "free" transfer supposedly cost us around 4mill in signing on and agents fees, so i can't imagine that any release clause would be that low.

We got Ba on a free transfer because he had a release clause in the event that West Ham got relegated. I would say that if the release clause is low, it would only be if we got relegated.

There is something kind of ironic about the 2 most eligible England manager candidates being at Newcastle and Spurs... for the longest time both clubs couldnt seem to stop sacking managers... now they finally get ones they want to keep.... and they could be off to an even bigger poisoned chalice...

        amen to that

usually a national manager escape like it was from a Soviet gulag at the first sight of Premier League management. E.g. McLeish from Scotland and Sanchez from Northern Ireland.

but there seem to be a weird lure leading manager after manager to throw themselves to the mercy of the English press and the hell that is managing England. like moths to the flame, and lemmings to a river.

Dempsey's inconsistency troubles me and the fact that he lacks support cast from BZ. But he could be still be a great shout for a goal atleast. Stoke will defend for their lives after some poor displays off-late!

Seriously though, there are a few good options this week but I have a hunch that City will rip Villa apart. Get onboard - has to be Aguero if they do score goals.

    My current team

    Vorm - Sorensen
Kompany - Evans - Senderos (Simpson, Huth)
    Silva - Bale - Dempsey - Valencia - Sess
    RVP - Ba - Aguero

Positive news of Kompany, but I'm still worried with my DF. No updates of Senderos who got injured and subbed off last week yet. Evans should start but nothing certain for SAF. Simpson should be the only safe starter I have. I still can t make my mind for who to replace Huth. There seems no interesting choice this week.

What's about Taiwo for his attacking threat? Playing the shaky Blackburn could be another goal fest and I have no QPR yet.

Attacking wise and a question of who to bench.. Sess scored again but his 116 minutes playing and injury might put me to bench him and start the rest. Hope we get more info on Friday.

I'm also pondering who to bring in instead of Huith too. Taiwo might be a good shout. If not for this gameweek at least more long term he 'should' pay off. I've already got him though so that's not good for me.

It's a shame there's no certainty within the Chelsea defence. Otherwise Cahill or Boswinga could be a good transfer.

Not much help I know, but still.

Yep. Rangel is on my list for some attacking threat too. I'm not sure as I also have Vorm in goal and Swan fixtures don't look much good. Anyway, the fact that he is Mark's pick sway me towards him a little more.. 🙂

Btw, I think it will be another week with rare CS. I would play only 3 DF and will start Valencia too.

Yeah we're on the same pitch there 🙂

I'm playing Vorm too, making me 3-up with Swansea if I draft Siggy in, but I think they're one of few teams that warrant it this week. City look good for it too. If your 3 defenders ended up being city/swans/manu you could do a lot worse.

    RVP Aguero Dzeko

(Dzeko out for Ba/Cisse next week if anyone was wondering, only got Aguero this week in anticipation of the BLA, BOL fixtures)

Who to bench? I'm leaning towards McClean.

Dempsey is coming in regardless. Getting him later = paying 0.1 extra but gives me more time to work out the trades needed to get him. I'll just have to pay the extra I think.

    hello,

i am having a very difficult time picking captains this week. currently, i am thinking about aguero, bale and dempsey. i know aguero's away form is weak, but i think he may do well against villa. bale has amazing home form, so he looks like a good choice. then there's dempsey, who plays a stoke side without huth. who are you guys going and why?

I'm going with Robin van Persie because he's Robin van Persie.

Of your 3 I like Aguero, even though he's only scored at home I don't think that there's some magical barrier that prevents him from scoring away. I think it's just been random chance thus far.

ya it's strange. and ya rvp is always a good shout, but i think the arsenal and sunderland will be a very tight game. but as we all know, if arsenal do anything, rvp will have something to do with it, so could go either way.

I think it depends if Spurs can field their first team. At pool, we were missing VDV, Lennon, Sandro, Kaboul, Defoe which took away a bit of bite from the attack. Will be a similar game if those players are still missing against Newcastle

Form? He got 2 points last week and was out of it.
Fixture? Newcastle is a decent defense, last I checked.

Why is this a wise move, Mctown?

And while I'm here actually, I don't think it's fair to say he isn't in form,

He's had 3 goals in last 3 games. And Liverpool have one of the staunchest defences in the league. He was off his game, yes, but credit to him he did get himself into the opportunity, and created the chance, to score the winning goal. Albeit, he screwed it up, but he made the chance.

Currently on Aguero(C) Bale(VC). Torn between the two. I know Aguero hasn't done much away from the Etihad, but Villa has been horrendous in the back, giving away 2-3 goals their past 4 matches. They've also conceded penalties to the likes of united, chelsea, and arsenal. I figure with aguero still on pks and villa likkely to concede 3-4 goals to city, he'll play a major part.

Hmm, despite flirting with options such as Dempsey, Bale, Aguero and Siggy, I'm resigning myself to yet another RVP(c) this week. Whilst SUN are on form, a midweek 120 min FA cup exertion and possible injury to Sess, combined with a rampant Arsenal after last w/e could = goals. And RVP is always in the mix when Arsenal score.

where they have to chose between freedom from the Nazis and winning the match against the Nazis... a huge dilemma of course, as any football player would understand

The Manager ...or something like that. It was a parody of football management. Seem to remember the team winning the Cup and the street parade on the bus took a wrong turn ending up travelling on some motorway in the opposite direction.

Hey Canadian, currently thinking of Aguero(C) this week, reasoning is above, thoughts?

I think he is a good choice cant argue with it. I elected to go Dzeko 2 weeks ago instead of Aguero as a differential.

However the more i think about it, RVP is the man. Too many city players can score thus diluting agueros production.

That's actually a good point, Canadian. But the fact he's been the furthest in average positioning by a mile and that he's on penalties seals it for me. I only caught the highlights of the Fulham game, but it felt as though Aguero was the heart of all attacks, ala Rooney in the first 5 weeks.

Agreed with the penalties (which could be the difference and a major unknown). I just feel that in watching his last few matches he seems to be playing a little deeper.

The thing is both sunderland and newcastle are stubborn sides, that can lock down and play 11 behind the ball, which can really frustrate the opposing team. Villa are one of the worst defences in the league atm and with aguero also on pk's, he looks a good shout.

For me....RVP or Dzeko. The more i think about it, the more confused i get. It is going to be an agonising Friday night/Saturday Morning! Even Dempsey is in the mix.

Dempsey (bound to get 2 points by virtue of leading the capt's poll) 😉

In all seriousness, Valencia due to the uncertainty around him wrt his position.

That is a good point to add to the captain's equation, cheers.

Although, if Rooney scores, Valencia gets an assist. I believe that's an FA regulation now.

    Bale last 5 home matches 4, 9 ,3 ,5 ,15
    Demsey last 5 home matc 13, 2 , 2 , 20 , 9

Dempsey shades it there , especially as the 2s were against Man U and Arsenal

Newcastle have been poor away lately , however so have Stoke Both sides have players missing.

Another factor to consider is the Harry Rednap saga , how will Tottenham players react if their manager is given the England job?

after having been through what he described as a nightmare in the public courts, Redknapp will not subject himself to the even greater nightmare of being England manager, surely?

tough call though... I say Stoke is rather resilient, and Bale provides more assist potential

      Bale for me

Gaz, I mentioned this above but I think Bale's output also depends on whether or not Spurs can field their first XI - i.e. VDV, Sandro, Lennon, Kaboul (and that Defoe is fit off the bench). I don't doubt Bale's ability but it'll be that much harder for him to produce without those players.

Isn't that the same for most players though? Or do you think Bale is particularly needy of having a good team around him more than most?

I think it's that way for Spurs in particular, especially this year, because they are so reliant on their pace and width. And under the current circumstances, I do think Bale is affected more. It's perhaps a sign of what the squad lacks, but there really are no like-for-like replacements away from the first team...

but to reply to your concern, I think that currently Bale are in almost unplayable form. remember it was Kranjcar that played the through-ball that finally tore open the LFC defence Monday

newc have been shaky lately, but that was (imho) mainly down to a lack of teeth going forward putting undue pressure on their defense. with the dynamic demba duo now installed, opposing defenses will have trouble BOTH defending against them AND setting up attacking runs.

would back their form moving forward as being pretty decent, home and away.
