Watchlist

The Watchlist – Adel Taarabt

The enigmatic architect of QPR’s euphoric promotion campaign, Adel Taarabt’s haul of 19 goals and 16 assists last season marked him out as the prime Fantasy Premier League (FPL) target from this term’s graduate teams. Undoubtedly skilful, the reproaches of selfishness and defensive negligence torpedoed his two top-flight seasons with Spurs but, with a starting berth for the Hoops seemingly assured, many backed the Moroccan magician to silence the doubters and light up the league.

Though initially priced at a thought-provoking 6.5, a lacklustre start to the campaign saw Taarabt’s investors running for cover long before his transportthemed fall from grace under Neil Warnock hit the back pages. Banished to the bench in November and assuming the role of bit-part player under the old regime, the Moroccan –with no goals or assists to his name- has even made Victor Moses seem particularly prolific this term.

Returning from the African Cup of Nations last weekend, Taarabt was immediately installed to the first-team by Mark Hughes. Partnering Shaun Wright-Phillips on the flanks against Wolves in an aggressive 4-4-2, he emerged with great credit from a threatening display by a ten-man QPR. His new manager was clearly delighted with the Moroccan’s contribution and, having pulled Taarabt out of his hat, Hughes appears little inclined to employ him as a bench-warmer over a run of games (bla FUL EVE bol) that should provide ample opportunity for attacking returns.

New acquisitions Bobby Zamora and Djibril Cisse have already made their mark in a QPR side that suffered earlier in the season from a glut of creators and a dearth of reliable finishers, and Taarabt looks set to benefit from having a more clinical outlet for his technical wizardry. With his price down to 5.8, Taarabt is now in direct competition with Joey Barton (5.8) and Shaun Wright-Phillips (5.9) for those looking to invest in QPR’s midfield over this favourable run.

Barton’s holding role may put him at a disadvantage from an FPL perspective in a setup that promises attack from the flanks, and with Taarabt presumably restored to direct free kicks, Barton’s potential looks more limited under the new regime. With two assists in his last four games, Wright-Phillips is doing his best to dispel his customary aura of frenetic impotence, but whilst Taarabt never looks far away from conjuring up a piece of magic, Wright-Phillips never looks far away from falling over his own feet.

With the wildcard window a homogenising influence on our squads, picking the right differentials has never been more important, and, with just 3% ownership, the new dawn at Loftus Road may well prove beneficial for this summer’s forgotten FPL favourite.

stilicho I never make predictions and I never will

lol is the Dumptruck Dempsey? I'm seriously so far behind all of your nicknames.

I think RVP, right now. How do you not armband that kind of form against non-top 6 competition that will be tired from 120 minutes at midweek.

It's been on Dempsey all week though. Its just that I like captaining a pen taker on the tough captain weeks.

            Dump=Demp

Dumpster has hit two hatricks two of last 3 games. Seems to be cashing in on the amount of goal attempts he puts up.

SUN will be ready for ARS and put up a much better job of closing him down than BLB. They are too well organised. The MON effect can not be discounted.

I have 3.8M in the bank and am having a tough time spending it (wish my wife had the same attitude). My initial plan was to "wait and see" what the next few game weeks and then have the flexibility in the upcoming weeks. ie. United in GW28

    My Team

    Mignolet/Sorenson
    Richards/Simpson/Senderos/Naylor/Shotton who will be fixed
    Silva/Demps/Sess/Bale/Moses
    RVP/Ba/Dzeko

Good strategy? Or a waste of 3.8M?

Do you have Sess is the big question? If you do then buying Siggs would be the obvious choice. If you dont then McClean looks like a solid investment as Sunderland are the most in-form team in the prem and McClean plays a big part in that.

So Jafa, you're really giving more credit to the MON affect than RVP's sheer awesomeness?

I mean, granted, that is pretty much an immovable object meeting an unstoppable force, but seriously?

Sunderland weakened from 120 minutes tonight. RVP back on form. Arsenal flying. Penalties to boot.

I like Dempsey and all, but he is far from predictable, and lone striker is actually not at all where he scores best. And no penos!

To be fair, I just meant they were flying in their last game. Sure, they've been poor leading up to it, but now theyve unleashed the ox...........theyre flying, now.

Sure, Blackburn was weakened, but hattricks aren't THAT easy, and he played well. I guess I just have a lot of trouble captaining anyone else when RVP in on form and Arsenal is getting him the ball. (basically meaning Arshavin isn't starting)

btw, why is it that Asia is only filled with glory-hunting fans?

Here in Japan they don't even follow clubs that much, but players...

This chap walked into one of my parties with an Ajax Amsterdam strip. I went "not bad mate"... but when he midway through the party changed to an AC Milan shirt I was baffled.

😀 , I'm an asian and a man united fan, so it would be hypocritical to say something against the glory hunting fans part, but I'd like you to know, I started supporting united in the invincibles era because they were the underdogs against arsenal and haven't looked back since then, as for the Ajax thing, you should be grateful he didn't switch to a barca T shirt.

Not a great week for everyones favourite trio of strikers. RVP has maybe the best chances of scoring just because he's RVP and a goal scoring machine. But Sunderland won't be pushovers regardless of a 120 minute game played 3 days before.

Aguero has one away goal since GW6 and Dembas up against Spurs at the Lane.

Anyone a little worried of seeing 3x2pters sat at the head of their team?

I'm getting Demba Ba next week and going 3-5-2 this GW so expect him to score for you all at least. RVP and Aguero will draw blanks though 🙁

I must differ gaff. RVP will be facing a tired, worn down Sunderland side and will have a good shot at scoring.

Aguero is facing a very weak, possibly the weakest defence in the league over the past 4 games. And with Aguero being on pks as well, he will surely score. I see villa getting thumped by 3 or 4 this weekend tbh.

So sorry to counter your argument but I think both Aguero and RVP have very good chances to score this weekend.

Even currently have the armband on Aguero 🙂

Look back at Villa's past 4 games... HORRIFIC! Just the worst defence in the league right now. They have also given away pk's the the likes of manU, chelsea, and arsenal. With aguero again on pk's and always in the mix for city, his chances of scoring or creating a goal are very high, regardless of his away record.

Remember: you can't judge a player for his history, just his immediate form and potential in the next week. I find it very hard to believe villa will concede any less than 3 goals this weekend.

Udit, please read again.. you must judge based on potential and not on past results. You and I bot know Aguero has the potential to explode at any point in time, and usually when City win by 3 or more, Aguero is 100% involved in 1(or more) goals. 🙂

Cheers Gaff, Im assuming you're backing Capt. America this week?

Seems a decent shout, but what swings me between the two is that Aggers is in PKs and Dempsey is not. It is highly likely that both will be involved if goals come(which I'm sure they will) but the fact that Aston Villa has conceded so many PKs over the course of the season makes Aguero(C) a decent(possibly different) pick this weekend.

With that said I'm still strongly considering Dempsey as well, because nobody in my mini league has him, and would be a good differential. That said, I'm 60-or so pts in the lead atm.

I'm chasing points. Am either going to catch the leader (in 2nd) or crash and burn trying. Sick of picking RVP or occasionally Aguero every single week and us all having such similar teams, you just get nowhere. Then bloody Ryan Taylor or McClean eating away at me all the time.

Leader of my mini-league doesnt even own Dempsey. A brace or something from him could just be the ticket to catching him

Does anyone remember if (and by what percentage) RVP won the captains poll last week?

Concerned that going Demps could backfire on me in my Minileague cause most of em seem to go RVP regardless of other options... guess i'm looking for some reassurance that going with the herd works more often than not...

I can't remember the exact % but it was by a country mile.

Gotta admit I'm a bit worried too in my mini league. The guy behind me in the 3rd (level on points) always goes RVP and the guy 50-odd points out in front always goes RVP or Aguero.

Hoping/half-expecting a quiet week for those so am going different than them (Dempsey) this week and hope it pays off. But Aguero/RVP are such quality players they can score against anyone and kill my chances.

up until that cup game marathon, it was easy: everyone was taking a punt... handbag, kun, demps, gilfi, yak... open season.

hard to deny it's a game changer. i'm swayed by villa's weakness but i'm more convinced the mackems are not only shagged out, they just emerged from a string of easy games.

after all that, are we really back to 'rvp or aguero?' meh...

Evans over Taiwo, there is some crazy stat like "blackburn haven't scored in only 2 epl matches this season" .. and even last week they proved that true. QPR just aren't tight enough at the back and i can see blackburn banging in 2 or 3 to come out with the 3pts this weekend, after a thrashing from arsenal. 😉

I can but it will be Monday before I can get on, Ba will be 8 million by then, that 1 million would come in handy to upgrade Taiwo to a Liverpool defender later on.

newcastle don't usually "leak goals", theyre usually pretty tight in the back. That said, they did have a spurt of 15-20 mins vs fulham where they shipped in 4, so you never know!

for me right now its either:
                  Capt. America, Sergio or RVP

facing a defensive dilemma this weekend:

    current setup is:

    schwarzer (sorensen)
    taiwo/kompany/vermaelen (jevans/senderos)

i realize that as it is i've benched two at home for two away, just feeling that it's a weekend for attacking defenders as opposed to those relying on CS for points.

can anyone make arguments otherwise? should i start jevans/senderos? if so, who to bench?

    thanks for opinions!

yak could do well, not a bad punt looking at the rest of your team. you do have a legit squad this week without making transfers though. Ive found having two transfers more powerful than taking punts, but this is a very tempting transfer.

I know it's very FFS vogue at the moment but I can't see past having the super trio (Ag's,RVP,Ba) in the coming GWs. So I'd personally go with what you got this week and then look at using your 2FTs next week to downgrade in MF and get in Aguero for his sumptuous home fixtures.

Yak could be a nice short term fix on the other hand. Wouldnt argue against him scoring some points, this weekend especially.

So it's up to you. Short term or long term?

So am Iright in thinking that price changes only happen overnight? So if I buy Ba on the same day the deadline passes I won't have had to suffer anymore rises from him. As he's already risen 3 times this GW?

Think so. I asked this question earlier here, general reply was that he will raise immediately when the next gw opens. So get Ba right on Saturday evening (UK time of course!)

Price rise happens at around 2~3AM UK time i guess..

as soon as the spurs game is over, and ba appears healthy, he's coming in for D'Idiot.

Sigurdsson or McClean in for Valencia or Sess or shall I just save the transfer and use 2 next week?

Current team with 1.1M in the bank (if I downgrade a midfielder I can get Ba in for Morison next GW):
    Vorm, Mignolet
    Kompany, Caulker, Williamson, Taiwo, Evans
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sess, Valencia
    RVP, Aguero, Morison

    Thanks!

Bench Taiwo, Morison, Williamson. In that order. And save the 2 trannys

If you take out Valencia, dont take McClean, is my advice.

Your Ba Morison plan sounds good

Thanks, so may be best to hold out until next week and then do Morison to Ba and either Valencia to Siggy or Sess to McClean?

yeah i think your team is in good shape, so waiting until next week will give you more information, however you might lose some value

the thing I tried to say above was dont have 2 sunderland midfielders as they are in for some rough seas ahead. one of those are perfectly ok though (all in my humble opinion of course)

If it's next week I'd probably do Sess>McClean. This is going to be the bumper points week to be holding Siggs (I hope 🙂 )

Fair enough. I got him in right before CHE bought him. Back to the bench I guess. JEvans back in the team. On another point I am thinking of dropping SESS this week (the rest of my front 7 are all dynamite). After playing 120 mins last night I dont think SUN will be in great shape against the Arsenal?

Think he might start actually and it will be a huge game for him to prove if he can dislodge Luiz at CB to partner Terry most games. But the way Chelsea are playing I wouldnt be too confident of a cleanie.

Come the Bolton & West Brom games though if Cahill has secured a place in the side you might just get rewarded
