Fantasy Premier League’s Best Punts

Being ”The Puntmaster” I thought that I should compile a handy list looking at the best punts in the Fantasy Premier League game this season. Every Fantasy team has one or two risky differentials and the following players might be the ones to fill those roles.

Jordi Gomez – Midfield – Sunderland – 5.5m

Jordi Gomez has always been a punt during his time in the Premier League and this is the case this year. His gametime is likely to be quite high as Sunderland lack quality in the midfield. During his time at Wigan he blew incredibly hot and cold; often this is what makes a player a punt. When Gomez is hot he is capable of churning out the goals, but he struggles to maintain good form. I got my name after captaining him for his hat-trick against Reading two years ago. Those were his only goals in that campaign, highlighting the fact that he is risky business. However, there are a lack of good midfield options below 5.5m so some Fantasy managers may be tempted.

Dwight Gayle – Forward – Crystal Palace – 5.5m

Many of us are looking for budget strikers as the likes of Sanchez and Hazard cost an arm and a leg in midfield. Forwards under 6.0 are wanted by Fantasy managers and I often see comments on Fantasy Football Scout asking, ”who is the best budget forward?” Gayle struggled to cement a place in the Palace first team last season, this is likely down to his inexperience. However, now he has matured and will be launching a bid for a starting place. Marouane Chamakh and Glen Murray are not much to contest with, but with Frazier Campbell seemingly on the Eagles’ doorstep, Gayle is far from nailed on. When he has played his eye for goal has been impressive. Seven goals in only 892 minutes is a great ratio and one worth watching.

Harry Kane – Forward – Tottenham – 5.0m

Spurs’ prolific end of season striker will be hoping to carry his form into the new season. He profited from Eriksen’s fantastic set pieces and forged a good partnership with fellow forward Emmanuel Adebayor, who is worth 8.5m, a sum that many may consider too much for his goal product. If Tottenham don’t sign any strikers then Kane will hope to make his way into the starting XI. If you need a cheap forward option, Kane may well serve you well, especially with his opening couple of games of West Ham away and QPR at home.

Matt Targett – Defender – Southampton – 4.0m

Every season defenders priced at 4.0 are at a premium. Southampton have churned out another young full back who could appear for England one day. Matt Targett is highly thought about and after Luke Shaw’s departure some thought he would take up his role.  However, Callum Chambers and Nathaniel Clyne are favourites to cement the two wing back roles. If you take the punt and Targett gets the chance then you could be getting clean sheets and assists at a bargain basement price.

Yoan Gouffran – Midfielder – Newcastle – 6.5m

Gouffran has flown under many Fantasy managers radars. I don’t remember seeing him in any rate my team posts in recent weeks and this is surprising given his our of position nature. He featured far up the pitch for Newcastle last season and profited with six goals and five assists. Newcastle’s army of signings will increase competition for places but there is no reason why Gouffran would be dropped this season. He may fly under many manager’s radars, but will you take the punt?

Arouna Kone – Forward – Everton – 5.5m

This time last season there were high hopes for Arouna Kone after his 11 goals and five assists for Wigan in the 2012/13 campaign. However, a long-term injury kept him out for the next season. He is getting back into shape, despite not joining the Everton squad yet and  seems hopeful of a return by the start of the season according to his social network posts. At the moment, with Everton short on strirkers, he could be a steal at 5.5m but his fitness is a risk and the reason I view him as a punt.

I hope that you enjoyed reading this and maybe have changed your mind on who to get in your team! Check out my other community articles for my ”New Premier League Players Analysis.”

Bit late seeing this article but surely De Jong at 0.5 more offers a lot more than Gouffran. Playing higher up the pitch and on set pieces.

Why is everyone afraid to talk about who they think for sure is going to do really bad this season for their cost.. I mean we can take a punt on the failures too right?

Perhaps I can point out a name like Rickie Lambert, who not only costs 7.5 but is only guaranteed as a sub for Sturridge in EPL. He'll start the other competitions I'm assuming. I would be using 7.5 wisely if I was a fantasy selector

Is anyone worried that Ozil and Mertesacker won't be ready for the first game of the season? Wenger seems to want to give them more holibubs....hopefully it will just mean they miss the Charity Shield and come back fresh as German daisies in time for the Palace game.

So you're obviously a Spurs fan, as am I, so let me be the first to tell you sentiment holds no value in FPL. Lloris is great but he has disasters waiting to happen in front of him, I'd go for Krul who rotates well with Mannone, also 1 mill cheaper.

B Davies is an exception because of his atting from the back prowess.

Bentaleb is a defensive midfielder which is a FPL no no, look to Sigurdson, Gouffran or Brady in that order.

Schurrle whilst explosive will lack gametime, personally I'd see Sigurdson and Gouffran in my team over Schurrle and Bentaleb.

As for Zamora he needs to go, Wickham or someone to that effect would be preferable, possibly Harry Kane if you are a Spurs man, but thats only providing Spurs don't sign 1 of the 1000 strikers we will be linked with.

          Good luck.

....thanks Buddy - all good points.

I'm happy with remaining non- Arsenal: I have a bet with a mate and prefer to feel unrewarded when they score.

Regarding Bentaleb: he's a wild punt, but I like him and he'll go up in value with (perhaps) good game time, we'll see.

I honestly don't think that Schurrle will lack game time, I may be proven wrong, but well, my mind is made up. Everyone's got Siggurdson, but I don't see him replicating recent form at a much poorer Swansea.

You're right about Lloris and Zamora. I've got a mill in the bank and we'll see regarding strikers. Naismith looks a good shout at the moment, despite his epic ordinariness.

If I go with your keeper swap and Naismith I'll save 2 mill for a week one transfer that should stand me in good stead to amend any errors.

Thanks for the help and up the Spurs!

My gut would say that while the ratio of home to away clean sheets is surprisingly low.

That home clean sheets are still easier to predict. Perhaps city/chelsea/everton/whoever home games in recent years account for a lot of the home clean sheets, while the away clean sheets are spread throughout a larger number or teams?

    Worth looking into!

Like it. Not sure about Costa, Wisdom or Dummett but the rest look pretty solid. Having a dilemma over Yaya and Tadic vs Hazard and Mata.

IMO you have to go for Mata and Hazard. Toure is obviously a great pick but Tadic is unproven as of yet. Stick with the more reliable Mata and Hazard.

Problem with cheap southampton defenders is that the quality of southampton has now fallen to make them relegation candidates

Arsenal have signed Callum Chambers. I'm wondering how much game time he is going to get...Is he worth a punt or will he mainly be used as cover?

    RMT please

    Mannone
    Vlaar - Wisdom - Targett
    Fabregas - Sanchez - Mata - Eriksen
    Rooney - Sturridge - Bojan

    Schmeichel - Bruce - Upson - Albrighton

2mil to spare to bolster the defence, I'm trying a different style this year with a heavy hitting mid at a detriment to the back line.
    Thoughts please?

I think going with cheaper defenders is always a good idea. Every premier club has players who can score, therefore any clean sheet bonuses are few and far between. I have learned this in previous years and FPL scoring suits cheaper defenders imo.

    Hi guys...
Just wondering what your views are with regards to your first-choice formations. I have tinkered with the idea of either a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 formation. This leaves me with the dilemma of going for either 3 top strikers or just the 2 (if I went for the 3-4-3 formation I would have to get 3 good players, whereas if I went for the 3-5-2, I would only need 2).
What are your thoughts on this?
    Plus...
Could you enlighten a bit about the theory of switching defenders. I understand the idea of swapping players depending on their opponents etc. however, I wondered what other theories go behind this.
    Cheers!
