Premier League Players Analysis- The Summary

After posting various community articles and comments on my ever-evolving spreadsheet, I feel that a summary is necessary. The spreadsheet is quite complicated now so I have tried to write about what you can take from the stats that I have looked at. The points-per-appearance stats referred to here are after the League Multiplier comes into play. You can find the spreadsheet here.

The New Transfers:

After creating a points-per-app (PPA) analysis for each of the new transfers using the Premier League scoring system. I also added a column which adjusts this PPA stat so that it is more realistic for the new player’s previous league (referred to as League Multiplier) and a value calculator. Anyway, check it out on the spreadsheet for more info.

In terms of forwards, Diego Costa is the most impressive, as expected. He averaged 5.2 points per app last season, which is very impressive indeed. At 10.5, his value is not the best but that is what you pay for those point returns. Both Graziano Pelle and Mauro Zarate averaged a higher points per app than Costa, 5.8 and 5.4 respectively, but this is before the League Multiplier. When the multiplier comes into play, both scores are lowered. However, Pelle’s PPA only drops to 4.3 as he played in the Eredevisie. This is an interesting stat as it is the second best of all forwards. At only 7.5, his value is good too. Another forward in the mid-price category is Mame Biram Diouf for Stoke. During his time in the Bundesliga he averaged 4.2 points per app, which seems a good deal at 6.5. The most disappointing forwards include Marvin Emnes, Bojan Krkic and Brown Ideye. Personally, only Costa seems worth taking on for me. Although other players have good PPA, even after the League Multiplier, I will wait a couple weeks to make judgement although Pelle seems a very good deal indeed.

The midfielders with the highest points-per-app are predictable. Cesc Fabregas averages 4.8 and Alexis Sanchez 5.2. Again, like Costa, these players are expensive, so you would expect these points. In terms of surprises, Dusan Tadic is screaming out to be noticed. With 16 goals and 14 assists in 33 apps he averages 6.0 PPA, dropping down to 4.6 after the League Multiplier. Again as a cheaper option his value is impressive. Siem De Jong and Remy Cabella of Newcastle also catch the eye, with 3.5 and 4.1 points per app. Dissapointments include Fernando of City who is a no frills player, goalless and without an assist last season, and even though Jefferson Montero proved himself at the World Cup, his stats aren’t impressive, averaging 2.9 PPA after the League Multiplier. Alexis Sanchez is the most tempting for me and he could well be played up front. Remy Cabella has flown under many radars and if I can draft him in he could be a good punt.

It is the up-and-coming wing-backs who are headlining the defence. Aaron Cresswell and Patrick Van Aanholt are at 4.6 and 3.9 points per app each. Many users will be intersted in Filipe Luis who averages 4.1 points per app, mostly down to Chelsea’s superb defensive qualities as he managed only five assists last season. Stoke’s Dionatan Teixeira is a surprise with 4.3 points per app and good value to go with it. With three goals and one assist in 37 apps last season he may be one to watch if he gets into the Stoke side. Andre Wisdom and new boy Cristian Gamboa have disappointing stats due to West Brom’s defence but at their low prices they can still be considered as fifth defender options. At his price, Van Aanholt has a place in my head, heart and team at the moment and I will be monitoring Teixeira closely.

Newly Promoted Clubs:

I have decided that the best way to summarise this is to briefly look at each of the three teams. The way the sheet works is similar with PPA, value and a league multiplier for the Championship.

Burnley’s Kieran Trippier is the best option after he mustered 12 assists last season, however he might well be seen as overpriced at 5.0. His average points per app is 3.7. There is little to seperate forwards Sam Vokes and Danny Ings, at 3.5 and 3.6 PPA each. Due to Vokes being 0.5 less he could be seen as the better value option. I would love to get Trippier in my team but I agree with those saying he is too expensive. It seems a shame that Fantasy Premier League have put him up this high due to his potential to deliver and potential to flop.

Leicester’s forwards are the ones to look at. David Nugent is only 5.5 and averages 3.6 points per app and Jamie Vardy is 0.5 less with 3.4 PPA. Whether they will score at the same rate in the Premier League remains to be seen. The midfielders are much of a muchness, with Danny Drinkwater probably the best pick. In defence Ritchie de Laet offers the best attacking returns with two goals and five assists last season meaning 3.3 points per app on average, although better 4.5-priced defenders may see him overlooked. No Leicester players catch my eye, except perhaps Nugent at a push.

Many of QPR’s players already have Premier League experience. Danny Simpson is an attacking full back with 2.7 points per app after the multiplier. He assisted twice last season but he was impressive during his time at Newcastle. Charlie Austin looks a good prospect with 3.5 points per app but this is similar to other newly promoted forwards. Bobby Zamora offers great value with 2.8 points per app but for only 4.5. Simpson and Zamora are tempting for me with the latter meaning a more expensive midfield.

I will be writing one for a summary on the VS section soon so keep your eyes peeled!
