Happy New Year From Fantasy Football Scout

Drawing breath before Gameweek 22 rolls in – I wish you Happy New Year from myself and all at Fantasy Football Scout.

As usual, I want to extend a huge thanks to all of you for the support you have given myself, the team and the site over the past year.

I wish I could spend more time being active and be more hands-on with the community, but that is very much one of my resolutions for 2018.

It will be a major focus for myself and Fantasy Football Scout over the next twelve months. We will be focusing development effort and new resource on it to, hopefully, enhance your experience. As a result, I plan to be “in and around” you guys more often.

Next, I thank all those who contribute to helping me produce and run the site.

To Paul and the editorial team for all their tireless effort in writing our words on the site and for our partners. To Jonty and the moderators who volunteer their time to keep the community running – I look forward to helping them more in the year to come.

And to Granville, Andy, Az and Luke who have joined me in growing the popularity of the ScoutCast over the past year. Episode two hundred and forty-five is next, which just seems bizarre.

I would also like to thank Ed and our new recruit Mat – our technical team behind the scenes who have been so vital yet again in taking things forward and keeping us running. We have further development work in test, and it really excites me to be working with them on realising our plans for 2018.

Next, I want to thank my family and what is left of my friends outside of Fantasy Football. Particularly my fiancé, Pip, and my two children who still stick around while I shut myself off each weekend and night after night. I don’t know how much longer they will tolerate me, but I’m so glad that they do.

Thanks again for sharing my passion and for choosing our pages to feed it and voice your opinions.

Many thanks again and Happy New Year to you and your families.

See you in 2018.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Free Hit Chip discussion: are people thinking enough about the team they will inherit back a week later? Or are they too focused on the free hit team only? Surely it's better to take a few hits if you want, for example, Aguero now that Jesus is out long term, rather 'free hit' him in for Watford but go straight back to your dead wood.

The FHC looks ideal for when you need to change your team dramatically that GW (like a blank or huge DGW), but you actually want your current team back again because it's a good team.

    What do people think?

    Free Hitters

Have you really thought this through? Have a quick look at the GW31 fixtures, now remember that the FA Cup quarters are played on the same weekend, requiring a rescheduling for any team and their opponent that makes it that far.

Of course we don't know what will happen and there is a chance there are hardly any Prem teams left by that stage due to unprecedented 'giant killings'. This is however very unlikely and chances are a fair few Prem teams will make it to the latter stages. With the title race likely over by then (or now even), it will likely have extra kudos attached to it. Odds are fantasy relevant players will have a blank here.

This is the best time to use the Free Hit, regardless of 'oh I used my Free Hit GW2 and got 100 points stories'. By using it now you are throwing away your best weapon against the chaos that is very likely to be created during that week.

There are some incredibly tasty fixtures in that week. This creates a double opportunity. The matches that remain are ideal for loading up on with the Free Hit, while the ones that get postponed add an incentive to keep involved players longer term for the inevitable double.

I'm surprised I have to point this out, but I believe many others can see the logic.

'Oh but I've got Salah and KDB with no Kane and want them back after!'

Take a hit, it'll be worse when most of your 15 have a blank.

'I want to get ahead in my mini league'.

You'll be ahead for a little bit, but any gains will be more than offset by losses around the blanks and doubles later on.

'I play this game for fun and want to take a punt!'

Good, of course it might pay off, but it's still not the right decision. Like buying $10 000 worth of lottery tickets rather than buying $10 000 worth of shares in a balanced growth ETF.

    Cue an Ogbonna hattrick...

Absolutely 100% spot on. Every time I see anyone try explain their early use of the Free Hit, I'm baffled. This seems so obvious. There are no amount of points gained this GW (or any other so far this season) that will make it the 'right' decision. It must be saved for true chaos. We've seen nothing yet.

The only other factor to keep in mind though late in the season is using the WC the week before a BB which might effect the choice of the FH use as only 1 chip can be used at once. I.e. all a bit of an unknown

Btw - I am usually conservative with hits or using chips early... so no surprise that I am saving my FH. I find my rank improves greatly during the back end of the season when DGWs & the like come into play.

That's it, DGW chaos near the end of the season is where it counts. My friend and I played the chips well and got top 5K ranks from being 100k + around GW27. Just need to stay near everyone else and let the chips do the heavy lifting at the end.

The games could be moved to GW28 midweek, since there are no scheduled matches in other competitions that midweek, so there may possibly not be any blanks in GW28.

The best time to play the free hit is the week you are mostly likely to gain high points relative to your current team, and relative to everyone else. This could be the blank week as you explained, or it could be this week if you have several players not playing due to injury/rotation or have bad fixtures.

      1. noquarternt

'Relative to everyone else' would mean doing exactly what I wrote... 'relative to your current team' is irrelevant when thinking of optimal strategies.

How is “relative to your current team” irrelevant? So you won’t take your existing team into account when you play your free hit?

Not when looking from a meta perspective at what time is best to play the chip. Look up a few YouTube videos on game theory for a better understanding.

noquarternt, if a player has 15 suspended players today then there is a high probability of a larger incremental points gain this GW than any other GW, including the blank week you mention, by playing the free hit. Obviously an extreme example to explain be logic.
The arrogant attitude isn’t necessary by the way, it’s just a game and we are all here to discuss ideas.

An extreme example like that, yes, in that individual case would work. But that isn't the case of the Free Hits being used here and tiny unlikely examples like that aren't useful when trying to properly optimise.

I'm not trying to be arrogant, but to try and have an intelligent discussion. I'm sorry if I offended you.

But my point is that I think I could gain more by playing the FH today than in the blank week. If it doesn’t pay off then yes I’ll probably regret it when the blank week comes around. But it’s a calculated risk. And one I haven’t actually decided on, hence my interest in the view from you and others.

The optimal usage is to boost your team's points by the greatest amount relative to what you would have scored without it

An extreme example is often the clearest way to make a point. You appear to have convinced yourself so thoroughly that you're not trying to understand counter arguments. Within the scope of a whole season, it won't be optimal to insist on playing chips in defined weeks. You need to be more mentally flexible. Your option might be the lowest risk (assuming there are indeed extensive blanks, but there's no guarantee of this), but people play the game with different levels of risk. By responding to anyone that disagrees with you by just telling them they're wrong or not bright enough to understand, and offering to dumb down an explanation for them you're coming across as pretty stupid yourself (and frankly a bit of a d***).

Looking at the fixtures I'd say there will still be around 5 matches being played, so most people should be able to field at least half a team without much planning. So your chip gives you 5 to 6 extra players in poor games (despite what you've said the fixtures really present that many great opportunities), which dependent on your luck is probably an average of 2 to 10 points per player, so 10 to 60 points gained. Let's split the difference and say on average you'll gain 35 points.

This week by comparison, if you're holding the likes of Salah, KDB, Vardy, Firminho, and are a bit light on double game week players, you're likely to increase the number of players you can put out by at least a similar number. More importantly, you're going to be redistributing far more unused team value (when the blanks come the players in the playing teams won't be that expensive and you'll struggle to get your full budget on the pitch even with 11 players).

For full disclosure, I have played my free hit this week. It might not work out, but it was a calculated decision and I think I'll benefit at least as much from it this week than most do playing it in the blank.

really starting to annoy me this telling people when to do what

        every situation is different

I can see you're quite new to statistics and probabilities, but it's alright you don't have to get angry. My point is about outcome bias. You win the lottery and yes it looks good, but was it a good decision? No, because you didn't know you were going to win. The best strategy would be to go for a balanced and well thought out investment.

The sample principles apply to FPL, but I understand it's pretty difficult to get your head around at first.

                    okay know it all

my mate played his free hit this week "wrongly" in your eyes

                    his original team has...

                    Ake, Dann, Tark, Hunmeiner
                    Salah, Coutinho, KDB
                    Vardy, Firmino, Jesus

TEN players missing this game week

of which 7 will likely be back for the game week after

yes this is an extreme example, although I assure you it's a genuine one

but you're suggesting he should have taken a 32 point hit to field an 11 this week?

You are ignoring or misunderstanding the simple logic. If a player thinks there is a likelihood of gaining more incremental points in this week than any other week then they should consider playing the free hit.

A largely ridiculous analogy from start to finish

How has this nonsense been hulked? Just let people play the game and stop trying to make them feel like idiots for decisions based on many variables.

I agree hindu monkey. A poor choice for hulking.
I was hoping for a reasoned, logical hot topic on the FH today. I wasn’t considering the FH at all until the coutinho and salah news, plus aguero rotation risk now reduced. Suddenly my team looks very weak relative to the one a free hit could create. Could easily beat a point swing in a blank week.

Hmm with a team decimated by injuries and rotation over the Christmas period my DGW planning went out of the window. Given the fixtures, I fancy maximising Spurs, West Ham and Mam City players this week and then sorting my team out with a WC.
Is it the best long term strategy or short term tactic? Who knows until the games are played. I just know that I’m losing interest in this season as I’ve made some horrendous decisions and I’m close to giving up on the game. Essentially this is a last hurrah for me that may or may not work.

Here's the thing I think you've overlooked, if you save your free hit for a blank gwk then all you can likely do is load up in a substandard set of fixtures (potentially really quite bad) and hence not the best scoring players.

From an optimisation point of view its very probably better to try and maximise the upsides - ie extra fixtures and good teams playing with good fixtures. (basically you just have to accept the bad week with minimal fixtures)

A good analogy would be that of a taxi driver working many hours on a slow day to get to his daily 'target' but knocking off early on a good day because he's already met his target. Statistically speaking he's better off working longer on the 'good' days to maximise his income.

Now, we dont know what other doubles will come, but this one is here and represents a reasonable opportunity all things considered.

The point is that isn't full of bad fixtures, GW31 has very good potential fixtures there.

I'm assuming that there will only be 2 further DGWs, where TC and BB will be of the most benefit.

The taxi driver works, but with a BGW, he's going out to work when there are fewer cabbies about as most players could be down large amounts of players.

3 Spurs and Arnautovic easily gained through 2 transfers and hits (subsequently keeping them for the next few game weeks) than in the hypothetical future week where you would likely be down many more players and want them back immediately for the next GW.

But you do have a very good point.

The beauty of the FH chip in the big blank game week is that you can ignore the GW completely, not have to plan for it or end up with rubbish players to ditch and suck up your transfers .... I know exactly when I will play it 🙂

In theory, it's the right decision to play the FH-chip in one of the blank gameweeks. But you can't plan everything in FPL. My original plan was to play the FH-chip when the quarter-finals were played, but with the current state of my team I believe I will get more points from this chip this week.

I would probably have to do a -12 to field 11 players this week, and most of my remaining team play difficult mathces. In addition, some of my players will be back for GW23 and I want to keep that team. With 6 DGW-players and 6 players with easy fixtures and the 3 cheapest players I can find, the difference between points gained will be bigger this week (including the -12) than the difference between fielding 5 and 11 players in another gameweek. And that is what the game is all about, to get maximum points out of the players and chips, isn't it?

I think the main reason for not playing it this week is the fixture congestion which makes selecting a decent 11 that will definitely play almost impossible.

A week with bigger teams blanking will be easier to make use of the free hit

      1. HashAttack

the main reason for playing it this week WAS the fixture congestion ... not the DGW
With Spurs and West Ham we have two teams where we could pick 6 players that were definitely playing 90 minutes
We could also expect Kun, Choupo, Hazard etc. to play

Blank gw is rubbish filled always with Bournemouth & West Brom junk. Have hopped on FH this week with Aguero, 3 spurs, 3 city, 3 west ham, Kane captain & Eriksen VC. Playing safe wins nothing, 11 two’s in a blank is still a hopeless score

Do you have that stats for how many FH chips have been played and how many of those was this week?

This was the best week so far this season - there might be better "possible" opportunities but some people but get tempted to use their FH between then and now

I'd argue this week is pretty similar to a blank week ... where are Vardy, Firmino, Salah, Coutinho and who else misses?

This week met a lot of the criteria that you mentioned .. I have not spend any hits preparing for this week, had a lot of players who were questionable or had dodgy fixtures and the players playing this week are ones which I generally don't want in my team

"generally" good analysis, and I would most probably be taking the same decision.

Other than that, analytical and statistical discrepancies exist. Lots of them. Take some below actual/hypothetical examples.

      - One of my colleagues has 9 injuries/absences in their team
      - Another already used their FH some GWs back for a stupid reason. They managed to bag 48 points above what their normal team would have (incremental points). Having said that, it ALL depends on how many incremental points you would gain using the FH, a gain of 48+ would be a better investment, a gain of 48- would be worse. Now all this dude has to do is field their team for GW 31, field an imaginary team, calculate both points, and see if the difference was 48 to see if it really was a good investment. A good variance and standard deviation exercise would help.
      - You are making it inevitable that the best gains are on GW 31.
      - Although I agree with this theory (mainly because it works with MY long term strategy), I can in no way call it conclusive; it has MANY fallacies.

      - Oh and one last thing, statically, it all comes down to how many points you make, compared to what YOU WOULD HAVE (and consequently to your overall total), not compared to others. "others"are indirectly accounted for when comparing to self.

      example:

I scored 30 points on GW 30, and 20 points on GW 31
Jim scored 50 points on GW 30, and 40 points on GW 31
The difference is 40 points, in conclusion, it really does NOT matter what he scores on any particular GW that i chose to use a chip on, what matters is how many points I make, to close the overall point gap of 40.

It's a long season. Use your TC chip with care. Many wasted it last season Aguero. I waited and used it on Kane and got 93 from one game week.

The fixtures are good for TC but the doubt about starting is enough to give pause.

Mr hindsight here! It's easy to say that people wasted it on Aguero after the event because he didn't get many points. I was one of those who used it on Aguero. It was the right decision. He was in form and had 2 favourable fixtures. Just unlucky that he didn't get many points.
