Digest

The Digest – Gameweek Nine

The other Dutchman delivers. City turn up the volume on their neighbours. United’s defence is the latest to capitulate. Our futile search for an assured clean sheet returns goes on. Here’s Gameweek nine broken down…

The Player

While City collectively hijacked the weekend headlines, from a Fantasy manager’s perspective, Rafael Van der Vaart’s brace at Blackburn raised the alarm. The Dutchman’s haul was signposted; his spot-kick conversion at Newcastle issued a reminder to his potential as controller of Tottenham’s set-pieces.

Van der Vaart was duly raised in our Watchlist rankings to our top five midfielders and Sunday saw him deliver on that promise with two goals, fetching maximum FPL bonus in the process. As mentioned in our Scout Notes earlier, it’s five goals in four games for the Dutchman.

The reaction has been immediate – Van der Vaart is already the most transferred in player so far this gameweek, as Fantasy managers desperately look to juggle resources to find a “route to recruit”.
Therein lies the problem. As David Silva continues to deliver and Nani prepares to enter a run of favourable fixtures, finding room and the finances in midfield areas is tough. Scrimping on the forward line is an option but surely a major risk. Some will cash in on the wasteful Luis Suarez ; others may even look to get rid or Wayne Rooney to free up funds.

Certainly, looking at the transfers out so far, the likes of Rooney, Ashley Young and Nani are being sacrificed – Suarez has also suffered heavy sales. While all those players face testing away games this weekend – they follow that with home fixtures against Sunderland and Swansea respectively.

Knees appear to have been jerking and there’s set to be thousands relying on returns when QPR pull up at White Hart Lane at the weekend.

The Team

We’ve had our fill today – the press have pulled apart Man City’s 6-1 thrashing of United with the same kind of precision demonstrated by Roberto Mancini’s ruthless attackers on Sunday. It’s a performance and a result that could well shape the season – the reactions of both teams now crucial, with United threatening a backlash, City promising more of the same.

For Fantasy managers the attacking returns were unanticipated – the emergence of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko as mid-price options continues, as does the uncertainty surrounding their starting roles. Indeed, looking ahead, the anxiety surrounding the City teamsheet for the gameweek 10 clash with Wolves is already palpable. With a trip to Villarreal a week on Wednesday, Mancini will surely be weighing up his options for a home clash with a side who narrowly escaped a sixth successive defeat against Swansea on Saturday. Will he need Sergio Aguero and David Silva? Even Vincent Kompany’s owners will be fidgeting.

While it appears that few City players are safe from Mancini’s messing, Sunday’s showing demonstrated that Fantasy managers have to live with the uncertainty or risk missing out on an array of truly explosive attacking talent.

The Talking Point

The dismantling of the United defence exposed the weaknesses that we’ve been seeing with alarming regularity this season. While Nemanja Vidic’s absence is significant, even with the Serb installed, United have looked a fragile defensive force. Their demise at the back has already seen funds shifted to attacking areas of our Fantasy squads, with dirt-cheap defenders drafted in to fill the gaps. It’s a tactic encouraged by the fact that Ferguson’s men aren’t the only side who have failed to deliver – right now, Fantasy football is facing up to a defensive crisis.

Chelsea’s performance in the 1-0 defeat at Loftus Road was admirable but there’s no escaping the statistic that Andre Villas-Boas’ side have still kept just a single clean sheet this season. Jose Bosingwa will escape suspension against Arsenal in gameweek 10 due to Chelsea’s Carling Cup involvement, but patience is surely wearing thin with the Portuguese full-back and his defensive colleagues.

Bosingwa’s net transfers in the Fantasy Premier League game already show a deficit of 36K and it’s difficult to argue against that given the fact that Arsenal will draw up to Stamford Bridge next weekend. With Liverpool and Man City also at the Bridge in the next six, Bosingwa’s remaining owners may need to cling to the hope of clean sheets away from home or further attacking returns from the right-back – a far from ideal scenario when you consider the funds involved.

Newcastle have so far provided a course of some reliable low-to-mid price defensive talent but, when you scan their forthcoming fixture list (sto EVE mci mun CHE), it seems unlikely that they will continue to help compensate for the lack of clean sheets amongst the “ bigger” sides.

That leaves us relying on Stoke City to exploit their forthcoming run of three home games in four and, rather surprisingly, back at United’s door.

Will the 6-1 thrashing inspire new focus from Ferguson? With Vidic back in the defence, will the United boss look to build results from the back in the weeks to come?

With a fixture list that lends assistance, there’s little doubt that United’s defence still has the potential to deliver in the month ahead. The real question is, how many Fantasy managers will invest in that potential and dare to keep funds tied up at the back?

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hi All. Any feedback on my team would be much appreciated:

    Vorm (Krul),
    Enrique, Jones, Bosingwa, (Simpson, Taylor),
    Silva, VDV, Ramsey, Cleverly, (Dyer),
    RVP, Suarez, Aguero

      Good rotating keepers
Don't like Jones but no need to get rid as he can play RB, CB and CDM.
Doubling up on Swansea and Newcastle in some weeks will fail.
Cleverly is injured and also a rotation risk.
Front line is fantastic but try and get some good United coverage for their fixtures from GW11 onwards.

Keepers - 10/10 - They rotate well together. there has only been one GW so far where both have failed to keep a cleanie

Defense - 6/10 - Enrique looks good choice so do subs. Not too sure on Bosingwa and Jones. Chelsea can't keep a cleanie for their lives. With Vidic coming back Jones' position could be under threat. Consider a Villa or Stoke defender.

Mids - 9/10 - All mids look solid except for Cleverly. I would consider Eagles, Pilkington or Dyer.

Strikers - 10/10 RVP, Suarez, Aguero. Can't argue with that 😉

Your team looks fairly solid mate 😀

Da*n that VDV bandwagon looks tempting! The only way I can / want to do it is:
    -Bosingwa out, ShawX in
    -Larsson out, VDV in

It is a 4 point hit and I already have Adebayor.Go / no go? Thx.

That great volley he had in the dying seconds of the game, the one Ruddy saved in spectacular fashion . . . That was unlucky.

Agree, though, that there was some terrible finishing as well. He'll be back, though.

Ahh, that's it, I'm done with Mata. I had such hope. Out you go, hello VDV.

Thoughts and opinions on my team at the moment?

    Krul (Vorm)
Kompany, Taylor S, Bosingwa, (Shorey, Taylor N)
Silva, Nani, Van Der Vart, Dyer, Cabaye
    Van Persie, Adabayor, (Rochina)

My defence needs some work, I want Shorey gone, he's doing terribly, Swansea's Neil Taylor is iffy too. I'm also pretty suspicious about Steven Taylor given his fixtures. I might give Bosingwa some leeway for the moment, but he also is looking shaky. Jose Enrique and Shawcross look interesting.

I'm pretty pleased with the rest of it, I wonder about Dyer and Cabaye, and sooner or later i'll swap out Rochina, probably for Morison

    Opinions?

Looking at Drogba's tackle, he has 100% got the ball and not touched the player. Taraabt has dived down in typical fashion. By the letter of the law Drogba should be sent off, but the law isn't right, like many rules it is incorrect and needs fixing.

Drogba was barely off the ground, a few inches at most, the level of Taraabts feet. If he had made contact, Taraabt would have had a sore toe, not a broken leg.

The lone between safe two footed tackles and extremely dangerous is very fine. Sure this wasnt a bad tackle, but do you want to encourage people to lunge two footed into tackles. Or to put it another way, do you want to have your entire first team injured?

This is what amazes me, crouch potato.

None of us QPR fans came on here whining after the Villa game despite what even Villa fans thought was a soft penalty. That could have cost us and we went down to 10 men but still equalized to gain a point.

Should have had a pen in the Villa game too and against Wigan and Blackburn. Sometimes you get them sometimes you don't.

          You move on regardless.

the majority of decisions were debatable at least i'll give you that, but drogba's and the law that makes it a red isn't, it's protective and massively obvious why it exists.
stick to complaining about the bosingwa red, at least there's a case there. with all the decisions however i'd say don't give the ref a chance to punish you, luiz did and bosingwa did by grabbing SWP's shirt. these weren't black and white either way like the offsides at old trafford, and like old trafford i'd be more worried about anelka's miss of the season

Need some Stoke help. ATM, Wilson and Shawcross are nailed on and apparently the reason for Huth's fall from grace is because he wants to move back to Germany (home-sick) and was denied a move in the summer. Looks like he won't really feature in the Prem from now, but will in Europe. So it looks like -

    ??? - ??? - Shaw X - Wilson

with the ???s being filled by two of Wilkinson, Upson and Woodgate. The first two have started the last couple, but I don't know if that will continue. So (through my rambling I am actually starting to make sense of this) it is between Upson and Woody for the CB ??? ... and Wilko and Huth for the RB ??? And if so, that means Wilko is nailed on until Huth + Pulis sort things out?

    Wilko it is 😀

Nope, just the .1 and it resets again, shame that VDV is so far beyond 100% at this point, although he will still probably rise a further .1 anyway.

Anyone care to take a look at my team. It's one of those weeks where some teams fixtures turn from good to bad, and vice versa, so am verry happy to take a points hit to get in players with a good run of easy games.

    Vorm (Krul)
    NDyer Bosingwa Barnett (Simpson DeLaet)
    VDV Silva Cabaye Petrov (Dyer)
    RVP Rooney Silva
    0.6 m in bank.

Anyone suggest transers worth a 4-point hit? I have pencilled in 2 but want peoples opinions!

      Ntaylor I presume.

      Your defence is trully awful.

Newcastle are getting worse fixtures, and swansea are starting to trade clean sheets for goals, wouldndt double on em. (presuming that is Neil Taylor not Nathan Dyer)

Barnett and DeLaet, are you mad?

I would downgrade Silva, presuming that its really suarez and upgrade your defence.

Just took a 4 point hit, taken out Nani and got VDV.

    Team now looking like this.

    Vorm (Given)
Barnett, Kompany, Enrique ( Warnock, Simpson)
Pilkington, Silva, VDV, Ramsey ( Petrov )
    RVP, Adebayor, Suarez

Any thoughts on this team guys? Really want to bring in Aguero just not sure if I can afford it right now, only 0.2 in the bank. Think after this GW will look to ship out Adebayor since im covered with VDV but quite nice having 5 teams covered at the moment. I think my next move will be chopping Given and bringing in Krul to free up some funds then Petrov for a cheaper option to aim towards Aguero or Rooney perhaps.
