Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek Ten

The countdown to Gameweek ten is underway, beginning with our regular rinse through the fixture list and Next Six Tickers to establish a view on the “Strength of Schedule” for the coming weeks.

The Strong

Tottenham

Harry Redknapp’s side rightly have top four ambitions and, with five wins in six, are showing the form to realise them. The fixture list suggests that Spurs can go on earning positive results and cement a top four position going into the Christmas programme. QPR visit the Lane next, with Villa and Bolton also rolling up in the next five Gameweeks.

While the Spurs defence remains ravaged by injuries to Ledley King, Michael Dawson and William Gallas, Redknapp’s attacking assets will surely come good against such opponents. Equally, trips to Fulham and West Brom could also offer profits.

If you’re struggling to squeeze in either Rafael Van der Vaart or Emmanuel Adebayor, there could be some merit in Tottenham’s lesser assets – Luka Modric, Gareth Bale and full-back Kyle Walker. Going into the month ahead without Spurs coverage looks risky.

Stoke

Tony Pulis’ side are hugely effective at the Britannia and, with three home matches in the next four, their prospects look strong for returns at both ends of the field.

Newcastle will provide the sternest of tests this coming weekend and this will be a good barometer for Fantasy managers to judge the potential on offer. If the Stoke back four can keep a confident Newcastle at bay, we will surely see stronger investment in the likes of Ryan Shawcross and even budget full-back Andy Wilkinson.

A trip to Bolton follows the Magpies test, with favourable home clashes against QPR and Blackburn in Gameweeks 12 and 13. Following that, things toughen up once again for the Potters. Short-term investment in the Stoke defence, particularly when the bigger sides are scrapping around for clean sheets, looks a wise option.

Sunderland

The three points at Bolton will surely inject confidence into the Sunderland camp and with Nicklas Bendtner firing goals and Stephane Sessegnon back in a more effective wide role, Steve Bruce may well have a combination which can help sustain a run of form.

Certainly the fixture list is kind to them. Three home games in four serve up matches against Villa, Fulham and Wigan – all of which Bruce will surely be looking to win. The trip to Old Trafford will clearly be a major test and potential Fantasy blank but, around that, there’s little doubt that the Black Cats deserve our attention. A cheeky punt on Bendtner or Sessegnon could provide a handy differential.

Wigan

An encouraging display at St James’ Park at the weekend leads the Latics into a four gameweek spell which has them face Fulham and Blackburn at home, with trips to Wolves and Sunderland. If Wigan are to drag themselves out of the relegation mire, these matches will surely be vital in turning their season around.

Roberto Martinez has called for optimism, insisting that better results are just around the corner; when you look at the next four opponents, the potential for goals is clearly strong. However, Fantasy managers will be hugely skeptical as to whether these will be delivered and whether low-to-mid price assests like Victor Moses, Ben Watson and Hugo Rodallega can offer returns.

Also consider…

Arsenal – Disregard the trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend and Arsene Wenger’s men continue a favourable run of opponents from Gameweeks 11 through to 15, including three more encouraging Emirates encounters.

Man United – A backlash from the 6-1 hammering to City will be expected at Goodison this weekend and, following that, United embark on a run which should see the goals flow and even clean sheets restored.

The Weak

Newcastle

Alan Pardew’s side are about to provide a rigid test of the form vs fixtures argument. There’s little doubt that Newcastle will go into the next five Gamekweeks with confidence flowing through the squad – whether than can continue to translate into points and Fantasy returns remains to be seen. Aside from a home clash with Everton, it’s difficult to see where Newcastle’s next points will come from, right up until the trip to Norwich in Gameweek 15.

The visit to the Britannia comes next, to face a Stoke side notoriously resolute and determined in front of their own fans. This gives way to the Gameweek 11 encounter with Everton, a vital interlude that precedes trips to both City and United, before Chelsea visit St James’ Park. Clean sheets look very unlikely during that spell, while the likes of Demba Ba, Leon Best and Yohan Cabaye will surely struggle to add to their goal tallies.

QPR

Neil Warnock’s side stumbled over the line against 9-man Chelsea on Sunday but will take heart from claiming a precious three points from their local rivals. However, trips to Spurs and Stoke, with a home clash with City sandwiched in between, offers an evil run of three gameweeks to take Rangers into December.

Those Fantasy managers clinging to Shaun Wright-Phillips, Joey Barton or even Adel Taarabt, should consider their options. Warnock’s back four, while cheap, also look unlikely to be returning points for a few weeks.

Be wary of…

Wolves – A battling second-half comeback will give Mick McCarthy something to work with, having suffered five straight defeats prior to Saturday’s 2-2 with Swansea. The fixture list is staked against him however, with a trip to City this weekend just the first of four away games in six which also take Wolves to Everton, Chelsea and United. Points and Fantasy returns look scarce.

Chelsea –If you’re looking to clear some funds to make way for Tottenham acquisitions, your Chelsea assets could be leading candidates for sacrifice. The fixture list is against them, with Arsenal, Liverpool, City and a trip to Newcastle all coming up in the next six Gameweeks.

Liverpool – While a trip to the Hawthorns may offer promise in the short term, once the Anfield clash with Swansea has passed, Kenny Dalglish’s side faces a run of three gameweeks that see them take on Chelsea, City and a trip to Fulham – Luis Suarez will need goals before Gameweek 12, otherwise heavy sales will surely be on the cards.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Doesn't anyone on here think Chelsea might start to keep a few clean sheets? I don't have Bosingwa but wish I had bought him when he was so cheap. Surely they'll tighten up at the back with the quality they have there?

Bosingwa lacks the defensive part of his game, but our other defenders can more than make up for that. Unless, that is, David Luiz plays at the same time as him and on the same side, thats the problem. They both leave us exposed, we can cover for one but not both, if Bosingwa plays Ivanovic has to play alongside Terry as CB, and if Luiz plays we have to have Ivanovic at RB. There is no other way around it.

I don't think they will. I just got rid of bos and have had him pretty much from the start. If it wasn't for his attacking form, he would have been ditched before now. I even took Hilario in when he had a run of games, and was double heartbreak when west brom and norwich scored.

Im still raging from sunday with my trio of chelsea players got 0 points so ive had enough of them! Also makes it easier now to cheer for the other teams that play them! 🙂

Is Andy Wilkinson likely to be starting for Stoke for a while? Or is he just playing until others are fit?
Really need a cheap defender and he seems like the best bet at the moment. Any other suggestions?

Not many great options at £4.0m.

Not many good ones at £7.4-£8m either, actually, but that's another story.

I'm thinking I either bring in VDV for Dyer or RVP for Agbon, probably opting for bringing in VDV. I would love RVP in my team and know that he will get goals, but I feel that there are better budget striker options like Ba, agbon and 'he who shall not be named' rather than budget midfield wouldn't you all agree?

Is Bosingwa to Wilkinson so I can fund upgrade of Bale to VDV a good move?

Had Bos from the start, should I stick with Bale and hope he comes good against QPR? This is the only way I could do it and keep Nani. Other mids are Barton, Petrov and Moses so midfiled is looking a bit dodgy. 2 frees this week

Nani to VDV this week and then swapping them back straight after could work if you've got no other pressing issues. Last season I did that a couple of times with players and it really paid off. But if you've got other areas that need sorting out it can be a real waste of 2 transfers, especially if you get an unexpected injury.

Ok, a general question for you all. I won't go into the details of whys and wherefores as it'll take too long.

I absolutely HATE taking hits for defenders, as even a defender in the most in form and biggest team can still concede at home when they're coasting at 3-0, landing you with 2 points.

So my question is this. My defence is going to look SHOCKING at GW12 and will struggle for a few weeks after. I've got attacking transfers planned for the next couple of weeks, so would you take a 4pt hit this week and next week, to bring in two defenders (alongside my attacking transfers) with a good run of fixtures, say Stoke and Sunderland for example, or would you coast through the whole period with a shocking defence, hoping your attackers can bring you the points you need, or would you wait until GW12 take an 8 point hit and sort the defence out all in one go?

Ideally I would WC, but that is long since kneejerked.

Once again, your help is valued and appreciated. Well, most of you. 🙂

i hate taking hits for defenders....which is why i W'carded on Sun night. not proud of it...but there we are.

I'd do it week by week if you absolutely have to. you never know, one of your newbies might get a goal......(so might one of your current defs though.....!)

I wouldnt worry about a single week like this.

Sit down and get a pen out.

Plan which three you would play each week for the next ten weeks. How many of them might get clean sheets.

Are there any defenders not getting utilised much? if so take the hits, if not just roll with the punches

      It's a dilemma! 4 point hit against a 6 point gain!

That only leaves a 2 point gain in most cases!

The way l see it is stick with what youve got..
Cos u never know!!! I'm curious, do u have 2
Newcastle defenders?? If so I'd stick, cos they
      Rock solid at the back.

If the hits would benifit you in the short term take them the now if not wait untyil gw12 and go for an 8 pointer, we all hate taking hits but some are worth it. I think in the long run having a sturdy defence is worth 8 points.

    Begovic (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Naylor Enrique (Simpson Gabbidon)
    Nani VDV Dyer Ramsey (SWP)
    RVP Rooney Sturridge

Few thoughts on what to do
    a) SWP to Walters and bench dyer
    b) Bos to Kompany
    c) Nani to Silva
    d) save the transfer and bring in Drenthe for SWP next week.

Frisking the fixtures -- one of the highlights of the FFS week. About as good scout work as you can get, in my humble opinion.

And next... the scoutcast cant come soon enough!

ok...2 days of tinkering, looking at fixtures, scout stats and the odd gut feeling and my WC team is below: Thanks to those that have helped. No doubt it will all change by Fri, but i am moderately relieved ive got something together that i dont hate. (obviously not perfect by any means):

    Mignolet Ruddy
    Kompany Shawcross Wilkinson Simpson N.Taylor
    VdV Ramsey Petrov Sessegnon Moses
    RvP Rooney Aguero

Keeping Anderson, Drenthe and perhaps a Kompany downgrade on the radar....

I dont like your keepers. One good game does not make for a brilliant Sunderland defence.

How about you switch around to Begovic, Vorm, McAuley for keepers and Wilkinson?

Alright fellas - occasional reader, first time poster - thought I'd share my expert advice and let anybody who wishes to scrutinise it, do so.

    My team:

    Given

    R.Taylor Richards J.Enrique

N.Dyer Moses Walcott van der Vaart

    Suarez Rooney Agüero

    ...

My problem is finding captains - in 9 weeks thus far, my highest captain score was 5 (Rooney). That's despite having had Rooney and Agüero both from the start - they've notched up 3 hat-tricks between them. I captained Torres against Swansea - sent off. I replaced him with Drogba who was my captain on Sunday - sent off. Further to that - for the first two games I brought Drogba in for, Chelsea banged in a total of 8 goals... Drogba, despite being the only one of the forwards to play 90 minutes in both, failed to score a single one of them. It's just not working for me.

Walcott - I've persisted with him since as far back as GW4 or something. I can't get rid now, considering Arsenal's upcoming fixtures. van der Vaart I signed a few weeks ago for £9.7m, before the mugs realised his quality - he's now (back) up to £10m. I'm happy with keeping those two for quite a while more.

Captain for GW10: I have it between Agüero, van der Vaart and Rooney...

Hmm. With my luck in this element, I should maybe pick it randomly. "Advice"?

I want everyone to jinx him so Spurs do nothing against my beloved QPR.

I even joined the cause by ditching Nani for VdV last night and putting the armband on him.

Regrettably, in this instance, most of my captain choices have been good this season.

I have £2m in the bank, btw. Looking to bring in van Persie in two weeks, if he remains fit...
