Digest

The Digest- Gameweek Thirteen

The Tottenham juggernaut rolled on relentlessly at the Hawthorns, once again providing Fantasy managers with plenty of attacking options to consider. Newcastle showed their steel at Old Trafford and now have their sights set on Chelsea, ahead of a kind run of upcoming fixtures…

The Player

For the past few weeks, the vast majority of the Tottenham focus had been on Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale as the midfield duo racked up the Fantasy points. When fit, the Dutchman’s consistency is never in question but Bale’s continually impressive returns presented many Fantasy managers with a quandary- acquiring both players seemed a viable proposition, given the club’s run of fixtures.

Saturday’s win at West Brom brought Emmanuel Adebayor firmly into our thinking once again. The Togo international had drifted off the radar slightly after a six game scoring drought but a brace against Aston Villa last Monday was followed by another double at the Hawthorns- in the space of five days, then, Adebayor bagged as many league goals as Luis Suarez has all season.

Harry Redknapp’s acquisition of both Adebayor and Scott Parker has turned Tottenham into one of the most lethal attacking sides in the Premier League- of the ten games the duo have played, the club have won nine and drawn one. Adebayor has now returned more Fantasy points than both Van der Vaart and Bale and is the sixth top scorer in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game with 75 points- priced at 8.8, he still looks a bargain right now.

A closer look at his points sums up his consistency- only twice in those ten appearances has Adebayor failed to either score or assist and with Spurs’ upcoming schedule still looking promising- added to a double gameweek 20- a move for all three of the Tottenham “Holy Trinity” over the next couple of weeks doesn’t seem such a bold move after all.

The Team

While there’s little doubt they led a charmed life at Old Trafford on Saturday, the bottom line is that Newcastle came through unscathed. Many had expected a result similar to the previous week’s trip to the blue half of Manchester but Alan Pardew’s side clung on and remain in the top four.

This week’s home clash with Chelsea should hold little fear for Newcastle; with that 3-1 defeat at City their only loss, a defeat to Andre Villas-Boas’ side would be a far bigger shock that we could have possibly perceived at the beginning of the season. Yohan Cabaye’s guile and steel, Demba Ba’s goals and Gabriel Obertan’s pace and directness have added to the solid foundation and work-ethic already in place and Newcastle look ripe for Fantasy investment once again after what many had expected to be a tricky three-match period.

With Hatem Ben Arfa returning from fitness, a defence that has conceded just 12 goals this season and includes, in the shape of Ryan Taylor, the second-top scoring FPL defender, there are plenty of options available ahead of a run of four games that sees Pardew’s side face (nor, SWA, WBA, bol). Ba, in particular, should see plenty of Fantasy managers acquiring his services for that stretch- similar to Emmanuel Adebayor, he’s proven to be one of the most consistent Fantasy performers this season, scoring or assisting in seven of his previous eight gameweeks and at 6.8 continues to offer outstanding value.

The Talking Point

Yesterday’s off-field events concerning Gary Speed put everything into perspective. At times, football can bring unbridled happiness and fuel the passion of millions around the globe but Speed’s untimely death served a harsh reminder that, essentially, it’s really nothing more than twenty-two men kicking a ball about a patch of grass.

Clean sheets and points accrued have never seemed so insignificant with the news of the Welshman’s heartbreaking passing. Swansea took the decision to play their game against Aston Villa but with many of the protagonists clearly affected, the game itself seemed a secondary matter, dwarfed by the horrifying circumstances that had gone before….

The action moved on to Anfield, where Roberto Mancini adopted a far more conservative approach than many had expected. We can only speculate, but the previous day’s result at Old Trafford may have affected the City manager’s thinking. With a draw at Liverpool enough to preserve a five point advantage over United, Mancini adopted a 4-5-1, with Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko both benched.

Their attacking edge blunted, City were fortunate to escape with a draw; their average shots per away dropped significantly, Sergio Aguero could barely get into the game and in the end, only Joe Hart’s heroics kept their unbeaten record intact. The decision to rein in their attacking tendencies almost backfired yesterday and Fantasy managers will be hoping Mancini banishes such notions with immediate effect.

With 9 goals in his previous ten games, Balotelli was City’s form striker coming into this game and his frustration boiled over when Mancini finally introduced him to the proceeding halfway through the second half. Two yellows in quick succession saw him dismissed- he will now miss the Carling Cup match with Arsenal tomorrow evening.

In a sense, this could even boost Balotelli’s chances of a start against Norwich next weekend; with Dzeko likely to start against the Gunners on Tuesday evening, the Italian will be the fresher of the two come the weekend. City’s crucial Champions League home clash with Bayern Munich next midweek could also play a part in Mancini’s thinking, though- Sergio Aguero seems the likeliest starter of the trio against Paul Lambert’s side and a viable captaincy option, at that.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    My team

    Vorm | Ruddy
    Jones | Brown | Wilkinson | BAE | McAuley
    Drenthe | Walters | Silva | VDV | Formica
    RVP | Rooney | Bendtner

2 free transfers this week and 0.2 in the bank.

Big decision is whether to hang on to Rooney or transfer him out to get Ade in.

    Any suggestions appreciated!

Thought about getting Ba in, but unfortunately dun have enough in the bank (need 0.4 and only got 0.2).

Rooney is my big differential in my mini league, very irritating that he hasn't started firing!

Team linked. How's this sound for a plan?
This GW: Sess > Bale & Agbon > Helguson for a hit
    GW15: Ramsey > Nani
GW16: If form permits VDV > Mata, else hold

Damn it's hard to get a good combination of Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea coverage for their favourable fixtures coming up. I'll be ignoring Baines' potential too.

I can't get behind owning all three of the Tottenham trio. It just seems too risky, they go into a cold spell and your team is in big trouble. I would diversify your portfolio. Having said that, if Spurs keep up their current form, my last three sentences are stupid and should be disregarded.

Tottenham have very good fixtures ahead and all three are in great form. I see what your saying. But at the moment spurs are flying high and value of these players keep rising. A small hiccup in form can be rectified by a change. I can get most form players for the price of any of these lads so il stick with them at the moment. 🙂 Adebayors record in prem is great when he gets his game. van der vaart likewise. Bale was was player of the year last year, lets hope he can mantain that form this season after a slow start

I guess it depends on what you do with the spare money. For example, Bale & Baines could score far more than VDV & Jagielka over the next few weeks and they cost about the same.

Not true - points are important over the Christmas period, and midfielders/strikers give you more points than defenders. Fact. Just look at the stats, The highest scoring defender would be the 7th highest if they were a mid, and and 8th best striker, 9 behind the 7th best.
With Swansea consistently getting CS's and Newcastle will do too with the upcoming fixtures, I don't see the value in so many defenders at that price.

dont think so he never usually scores anymore than one and not doing great so far. maybe get suarez when he starts getting a bit of luck and all his shots start hitting the net. At the moment I think, ba, sturridge, and hernadez are good options. especially hernandez if you can afford him. if you were to get any the other two i would upgrade your defence and maybe get, richards, jones or walker

Enrique is really all you need with four ubercheaps rotating around him. Simpson/Brown go well together as does SWN/QPR defenders. Personally, I feel it's worth a gamble with Naylor and doubling up with Vorm. Such is the reliability of the SWN defence at home.

Not much value in picking expensive defenders for the cs they are keeping.

Absolutely. Depends on what you have in midpark though. If you have three budgeritoes in there then I'd definitely consider Baines.

My planned transfer last week was Baines/Bale. Looks like it cost me.

hmm 3 around that price is fairly standard. People would be doing well to have 3 descent strikers, 3 mid priced mids, 2 expensive mids. Enrique, Baines and the rest cheap

Enrique, by a mile. Take my word - he'll be 6.5m by the end of the season.

Also we should see some more attacking returns, now that his fixtures are easing up.

Elninorules.. I think Enrique is a better choice too. But, so far, Jagielka seems to have better fixtures over the next four and also more attacking threat, in terms of scoring, than Enrique. The bookies seem to confirm this too as goal odds of Enrique are so far much more than Jagielka.

        What do you think?

Fair enough, Natt. With the DGW, you could make a good case for Jags in the short run. Agreed he has more goal-scoring potential.

But by GW21, you'd expect Enrique to be 6m already, not too much value at that price. And with Pool you are guaranteed CS for the weaker fixtures. Expect 4-5 CS by GW21.

Enrique is the safer bet for me, Jags is a gamble that could well pay off.

Nah, he might be benched for 1 in 5 fixtures, if at all.

Wenger's said it earlier: "RVP's the first name on his team sheet in the PL."

Not really IMO. Too many options for wingers with Malouda, Kalou, Anelka floating around. Considering Mata is pretty fragile, we've seen how AVB wants to protect him 🙂

Btw I lived to see this day. Someone considers a Chelsea player as his main man 😛

Yeah but they all suck, he been Chelsea's best by far so far this season.
I don't see how he is fragile, last 3 seasons for Valencia he has played 43, 51 and 47 games and he has started every game since he debuted.
Sure he will see the odd 70 minute benching but he is still nailed on to start..
Haha, well, he was my main man this week, almost half of my points.

Hmm fair point. Esp considering how Anelka should be out of the club.

Players that would seem to be pretty nailed on (additions):

      Mata
      Cole
      Richards
      Zamora
      Adam?
      G.Johnson
      Helguson
      Sessegnon
      Bendtner
      VDV

And I'd say Newcastle's back four are all pretty nailed on.

By nailed on, I meant they would have to play 3 games in a week.
        Mata - See above 🙂
Cole - Already in as Cashley.
Richards - With City out of UCL, Zabaleta could get more starts in the PL.
        Zamora - True.
Adam - With Steve G back soon, not sure. Wait and watch.
        G.Johnson - Agger waiting?
        Helguson - He's 34. Bothroyd/Campbell on the bench?
Sessegnon - Wingers will defo see rotation IMO. ElMohammady waiting.
Bendtner - Soon to be dropped according to SUN fans.
VDV - Can't see him starting every game with his hammy.

Fair call. Could see 'arry going back to starting VDV but subbing him off around the 60 min mark like he did when he first came back earlier in the season.

Aguero OR Adebayor for the next GW14 - 17?

Aguero - NOR, che, ARS, STK
Adebayor - BOL, stk, SUN, CHE

I already planned to get Adebayor in for GW18. Should I get him in now as he is sure to rise massively in the lead up to the DGW?

    Money no object. Discuss.

You need to fix your link. If you have VDV already then go Aguero

Cheers for the heads up about my link. Now how do I change it? I know you use the code from the top of the "history" page, but I can't see where I change it on this site. HELP PLEASE!!

By the way, I already have Bale and VDV but have no problem at all trebling up. Also "my wife's team" has Aguero and we like to have different players (unless its a no-brainer ie Vorm, RVP).

I must be blind, or stupid, or both. I can't see "my account" anywhere. I thought it was in "my profile" but I can't find where to edit the team link!

I am not sure...I have been thinking of it as to make a move or not. most managers in leagues have vdv, so it could be a well calculated risk...or not.
