Spot the Differential

Spot The Differential – Gameweek Thirty Eight

Sunday morning’s deadline creeps ever closer and it’s time for a final roll of the dice. There’s only one chance left to overhaul that mini league lead and if you’re anything like me, then nothing short of a miracle will suffice. What’s needed is something truly special – a player that no one else has returning a monster score as captain, while the big names have an off day…

Very unlikely, of course, but while that chance remains there is always hope. With this in mind, we’ve picked out a trio of differential captain options, in the hope that one can help you pull off an epic last day turnaround to rival that glorious sunny day in 1994.

Leighton Baines

David Moyes is notoriously difficult to predict at times, but reports suggest that the ex-Wigan man has been back in training this week and looks set to return against Newcastle, providing an interesting option as a last day punt.

Everton’s impressive form over the last eight games has seen then turn in five clean sheets and score four or more goals on three separate occasions. What’s more, they’ve shipped just one goal at home in the last seven, a run that has seen City, Chelsea and Spurs come away from Goodison without a goal between them. Form is definitely on their side, then, and although Newcastle will be desperately pushing for the win to give them a chance of Champions League qualification, Everton will be confident they can keep the likes of Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa at bay.

Defensive returns alone aren’t enough to pull in a monster score but, as arguably the most attacking defender in the league, Baines offers huge potential at both ends of the pitch and could easily top double figures. It’s a big risk of course; to maximise returns as captain, you’re relying on him playing 90 minutes and keeping a clean sheet, and will probably need a penalty or a couple of assists to boot. If there is anyone capable of pulling it off at Goodison though, Baines is your man and with just 5.5% ownership in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he would be a huge differential captain.

Carlos Tevez

If there is one player in the league capable of racking up a cricket score this week, it’s Carlos Tevez. With just 2.3% ownership compared to Sergio Aguero’s 29%, the Argentine maverick has the power to completely overhaul a mini league gap in one fell swoop.

After a huge 19 point haul against Norwich, he has not done much of late but we all know what Tevez capable of. Hugely influential in City’s late surge towards the title, he will be looking to further redeem himself in the only way he knows how; scoring a shed load of goals. With the extra incentive of beating his old club to the Premier League title, Tevez will be bouncing off the walls; chances are he’s either going to get sent off or score a hat-trick.

Priced at 11.6, squeezing Tevez into your team won’t be easy, and you may need to consider *gulp* dropping the imperial Robin Van Persie. We’re talking desperate measures here, though, and if you’re going to pull off a miracle, then you’ll probably need Van Persie to have a shocker at the Hawthorns anyway.

Andy Carroll

Second only to team mate Luis Suarez in terms of Fantasy frustrations this term, and with just one double figure return all season, Andy Carroll is perhaps the biggest gamble of our trio. With so much potential on offer, and so many chances handed to him on a plate, the former Newcastle man has hit the post or been edged off the ball at the vital moment time and again. It might be a slight cliché to say that Carroll is due a bumper haul, however, but he really is. One look at our members stats show he has been a real handful over the past four Gameweeks, creating umpteen goalscoring opportunities and firing several efforts at goal. Despite the fact that Carroll has returned just a single assist since Gameweek 34 onwards, only Van Persie has offered more in terms of key passes and goal attempts.

Don’t be fooled into thinking Liverpool have nothing left to play for. If they better Everton’s result against Newcastle, they will leapfrog their city rivals into seventh – this may seem like small consolation but means a huge amount to anyone associated with either Merseyside club. Coming off the back of a 4-1 thrashing of Chelsea and up against a Swansea side that are have shipped four goals in their last home game, Liverpool will be looking for a big win here and, with a bit of luck, Carroll could be just the man to take advantage.

Big Dunc If you're going to get sent off, make sure its for something worthwhile... Follow them on Twitter

Baby's taking a nap, so here's my final chance to tinker with my team this season!

I'm holding a ONE point lead over my rival.

    My team:
    Mignolet (Krul)
    Hibbert, Verm, Caulker (Evans, Kelly)
    Bale, Siggy, Valencia, McClean (Demps)
    Aguero (C), RVP, Jelavic

    His team:

    Mignolet (Krul)
    Jags, Verm, Caulker, (Evans, Shotton)
Bale, Petrov, Pienaar, Valencia ( Demps)
    RVP, Jelavic, Rooney

He did one transfer which I guess is Rooney to Aguero.

Should I consider taking a -4 for Demps out for someone?

    A) Demps out for Man C midfielder (Silva or Nasri or Yaya)
    B) Demps out for Moses/ Maloney
    C) Do nothing and play McClean and hope for the best

      imo.....it comes down to

Siggy & McClean vs Petrov & Pienaar.

I think he has the slight adv.

Are you not starting Krul over Mings?

It is a coin toss....if i were in your situation i would be up all night.

If you are taking a hit , do Demps>Nasri

I have same dilemma, but am sticking with my suboptimal D. Slightly better off than you, maybe, cuz I have Vermaelen (wba), Caulker (LIV), and Kelly (tot), ahead of McAuley (ARS), but tbh, not sure that Kelly is much better choice than McAuley. JEvans as well on bench, but unlikely, it seems, to play.

Pondered move to bring in Kompany for a hit, but now instead feel a bigger need to replace Dempsey for a hit.

not worth it imo. i have the same issue but think i'll just play turner. you're really banking on attacking returns for it to pay off which is a bit of a lottery with defenders. even if you do get a clean sheet that only cancels out the hit itself. to be fair wba's defensive record isnt that shabby and they could be pumped up to give woy a good send off

ML leader has made 2 transfers this week. I reckon he's sold off Dempsey and Jelavic...

    Two questions:

    A) Would he have gone Dempsey + Jelavic -> Aguero + Moses or Tevez + Eagles?

    B) He's taken a hit, should I just stick with the one transfer or also take a hit?

    Deficit is 35 points.

Haven't made it yet. I was waiting for him to make his moves 😉 Jelly could be a sweet differential now.

I predict his side will be:

        Bogdan
        Kompany, Verm, Terry
        Moses, Valencia, Bale, VDV
        Cisse, Aguero (C), RVP

        Bench: MIgnolet, Siggy, Caulker, Evans,

        My squad:

        Bogdan, Mignolet
        Evra, Caulker, Walker, Shotton, Evans
Bale, Ben Arfa, Mata, M Petrov, Siggy
        Jelly, Rooney, Suarez

4.2m in the Bank... get a mid like Pienaar/Eagles/Ramires for Mata or change up Bogdan for Hart/Habsi/?

My team is looking really week so not sure if its worth taking hits

    A: Adebayor + demps >>> Ramires + Torres (4 point hit)
    B: Rooney + demps >>> Torres + Nasri (4 point hit)
C: Rooney >>> Augero or Torres
D: Rooney + Evans >>> Augero + any defender (4 point hit)....although i dont see the logic of taking a hit to bring in a defender.

    Doubts about all because:

Moses - game worth nothing so could be in holiday mode.

      Moses and Pienaar

      Moses because Wolves suck.
Pienaar because Everton always plays to win at home and because he and Jelavic are really starting to connect well.

Not Valencia because, apart from a haul against Arsenal, he has done squat in big games for most of this year. Huge percent of points against the bottomest of the bottom-feeders.

What are Valencia's chances of starting? I think he is the only player in my starting 11 that has a chance of not playing. The reason I'm asking is that I have 3 injured players on my bench. If I think all my players will start I will do Jelly ->Aguero and captain him. If not I will do Dempsey -> VDV or Evans -> Kompany.

If he doesn't play I'm down to 10. He's one of their best players and they need goals. I would be very surprised if he was not playing

I have the same problem and no fit bench. Valencia's been useless recently so Nani could easily start. Young was alright against Swansea so it's a worry.

The only problem is if I do that Valencia will start and Silva will not score 5+ points more than him, I think that scenario is more likely than Valencia not starting and Silva scoring 5+ points

    Moses

Pro: home v WOL/16 ga: 10 ot/form/spreads the risk if City score low
Con: unreliable and remember this is Wigan we're talking about

    City mid

    Pro: 5/6-0 result likely/QPR/home game

            True.
My main remaining ML of concern has me with a fairly safe lead over a team that has Silva, so I'm leaning towards playing it safe and just neutralizing with a Silva pickup of my own.

I thought about it more as who would I rather lose, Rooney or Jelavic. And decided I'd quite like to have Rooney today. Also, Newcastle's defence is tight, and they have a lot more to play for than Everton.

I've just done an 8 pt hit to catch a 6 point lead in my ML. So now I hope to be 14 points better with this team:

    Bogdan (Vorm)
    Clichy, Verm, Jags
    Siggy, Pienaar, Bale, Moses (vc)
    Rooney, Aguero (c), Ade
    (Valencia, Simpson, Turner)

vs opponent's (squad from last gw. 1 ft)

    Bogdan, Vorm
    Verm, Simpson, Rafa, Evra, Kelly
    VdV, Pienaar, Siggy, McClean, Dempsey
    Aguero, Cisse, RvP

my thoughts, FWIW, from a few posts above:

"Pienaar because Everton always plays to win at home and because he and Jelavic are really starting to connect well.

Not Valencia because, apart from a haul against Arsenal, he has done squat in big games for most of this year. Huge percent of points against the bottomest of the bottom-feeders."

I am not so sure about that. The swans are gunning for a top 10 finish, all the fans are going to dress as Elvis and Brendan Rogers seems fairly confident he can keep Siggy

Siggy is only on~loan @ Swansea...he's obviously gonna play seeing as it's the last game of the season...he'll go out with a bang until he gets snapped up permanently by someone...

Brendan Rogers loves Siggy and is trying to sign him. He will play 100%
