The Digest – Gameweek 13

A South Coast South American bewilders the Magpies to turn our heads again. Chris Hughton’s battlers go on defying the odds to present a determined barrier and Fantasy managers are left pondering whether less is more…

The Player

Southampton’s record signing arrived with expectations high after he snapped up eight Serie A goals for Bologna in the previous campaign. Gaston Ramirez quickly settled into his stride, producing a goal and assist over his first two league starts before a leg injury saw him fall off Fantasy radars.

As injuries ease up and the Saints become accustomed to life in the Premier League, Nigel Adkins’ side are starting to climb the table, with a consistency of tactics and selection both crucial to their recent unbeaten three-match run. With Jack Cork stabilising central midfield alongside Morgan Schneiderlin and Luke Shaw now preferred to Danny Fox at left-back, Adkins has settled on a 4-2-3-1 formation and his decision to hand Ramirez the role in “the hole” behind Rickie Lambert has proved instrumental in recent matches.

Afforded the freedom to torment the Magpies, Ramirez was superb in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Newcastle, teeing up Adam Lallana for the opener before firing home the second for a 12 point Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul as the Saints won back-to-back matches for the first time this term. While a record of two goals conceded in their last three is indicative of an upturn in resilience, Adkins’ side’s chances of survival will likely depend on their ability to find the net and, looking at the stats, Ramirez’s presence is crucial. Southampton have notched 11 times in the six games he has started, compared to nine in seven without him in the first XI.

With home clashes against Norwich, Reading and Sunderland on the horizon, the potential for further points looks profitable over the next few. Although Adam Lallana offers a similar mid-price route into Adkins’ midfield and Jason Puncheon is the cut-price option, it’s the 6.0 FPL priced Uruguayan who looks the real flair punt for Fantasy managers; his undoubted class may well prove the catalyst in ensuring the Saints’ recent ascent continues.

The Team

With a total of three clean sheets accrued in the previous campaign under Paul Lambert, Norwich’s defensive prospects were given a wide berth as the season got underway. A 5-0 opening day defeat looked ominous for the Canaries defensive returns but Chris Hughton has slowly turned things around and transformed his side into one of the most resolute backlines in the Premier League.

While John Ruddy remains from last season’s side, Norwich’s defence in recent weeks has been entirely of Hughton’s making, with Steven Whittaker, Michael Turner, Seb Bassong and Javier Garrido all brought to Carrow Road over the summer. Three consecutive 1-0 home wins, including triumphs over Arsenal and United, have afforded Fantasy managers plenty of cut-price options amongst Hughton’s charges, with just two goals conceded in their last six Gameweeks.

The weekend trip to Everton looked a real test. The Toffees had scored at least twice in each of their last four home matches but not only did the visitors restrict their hosts to a single goal, they clinched a late point thanks to Bassong’s late leveller, with Garrido supplying the assist. The latter’s recent exploits earned him 70,000 new suitors last weekend to take his FPL price to 4.7 – the costliest of Hughton’s defensive regulars. While Turner is now sidelined with a few weeks due to a shoulder injury, Bassong (4.5) and Whittaker (4.3) look intriguing alternatives in defence, while Ruddy, at 4.7, has now leapt to the top of the FPL keeper standings.

In a season where United have just two clean sheets to their name and Chelsea kept out their opponents for the first time since Gameweek 5 on Sunday, many Fantasy managers are looking for ways to free up budget in defence. Having scored more than a single goal on just one occasion this term, Hughton’s side may look far from enticing going forward but at the back, the value on offer at Carrow Road is looking harder to ignore as the campaign progresses.

The Talking Point

Gameweek 13 found Fantasy managers pondering their expensive assets in their squads and with good reason. Incredibly, only four players over 8.0 delivered goals or assists this weekend: Wayne Rooney earned his sixth assist of the season in the stuttering win over QPR, whilst Gareth Bale, Clint Dempsey and Andy Carroll all fetched returns in the same match at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Given that the latter pairing have a combined ownership of just over 2% and we can safely say that many Fantasy managers were struggling to extract value for money from Gameweek 13.

To compound matters, it was a strong weekend for the mid-price and budget player, with the aforementioned Southampton starlets shining bright, along with the likes of Charlie Adam, Zoltan Gera, Jordi Gomez and Shane Long.

While plenty reach for the panic button, then, we can afford to take a step back and summarise that the weekend was hardly typical of what has gone before, or what is likely to follow.

With so many heavy-hitters falling short, those quite used to strong weekly returns will currently be licking wounds and perhaps contemplating changes and even “downgrades”. There perhaps should be caution and, with a Gameweek now just 24-hours away, we can afford our established assets a little patience, as the quick turnaround in fixtures hands them an immediate opportunity to restore our faith.

Thinking about Fellaini>Sess for short term both have same value as got Fellaini in at 7.0, however if i get Fellaini back after which i most likely will i will be losing a valueable 0.3 from my budget

Yes, and I'm expecting a few surprises due to 'Rafatation'. Hazard was subbed off, Mata wasn't and Moses looked lively. Though I think it's gonna be Oscar who'll be dropped on the bench, you just never know with Rafa.

I just realized I could have many rotation issues this GW...

    Begovic (Jaask)
    Clyne Garrido Cuellar (Reid, Barnett)
    Michu Mata Sessegnon Fellaini (Nolan)
    RVP Aguero Giroud

Aguero played almost 90 mins vs Chelsea, Giroud is tired according to Wenger and RVP may be rotated either in this on the next game. Mata played 90 mins vs City and Benitez is known as rotation - lover. And i just realised that Sunderland - QPR could be postponed because of bad weather... So (i ve made my transfers now so I ll stick with my first XI) the only thing I can manage is my Captain. Shall I go with the obvious choice?? Or after 2 blanks I should try to give it to either Michu or Fellaini(who was rested) as a differential? thx.

I am dropping off the pace in my league (and worse still - my girlfriend is catching me...) Any suggestions on improving my team, this is how I plan to line up this week:

    Begovic (Jaaskelainen)

    Rafael, Baines, Clyne (Cuellar, Demel)

Bale, Mata (c), Michu, Sess, Sterling

    Aguero (vc), Giroud (Jelavic)

Transfer done this week already, bringing in Begovic for the never ending sick note that is Foster, so really it is about line up and subs.

Hard with Defoe - a guy in my ML brought him in and captained him when he got 1 point, then dropped him last week when he did well.

I guess its the same with anyone though.

One thing you should know though is that I just dropped Jelly, so he is bound to score big this week. With my run of recent luck captaining him might not be such a bad decision.

Thought about Fletcher but I already have cover with Sess. Ba is just as unpredictable as Jelly, and I can't get Suarez (budget, principle and ethical reasons). Berbatov is the other option I am considering along with Defoe.

Those unlucky to get AJ over Sess, what are you planning to do? As either is only a punt for a few gw’s, patience can’t be a factor here.

    So my choices are
    a) Pienaar/AJ->Sess
    b) Pienaar->Puncheon

    or both?

Which one do you guys recommend?

Ses and AJ would be a bit overkill, considering it's still Sunderland we're talking about here. Give AJ some time imo. Pienaar to Puncheon sounds decent if anything.

This is the team I'm aiming for. Currently a massive 5 transfers short.

        Begovic, Foster
Rafael, Cuellar , Enrique, Sagna, Demel
        Caz, Bale, Puncheon, Sess, Sterling
        RVP, Berbatov, Suarez

Fletcher is an interesting shout, as I could easily upgrade Berba->Fletcher but just don't feel too keen. Don't know why.

        Confirmed move from Pienaar->Puncheon.

I was so close to both B.Arfa->Sess, and Berbs->Defoe this week. Makes you really pissed when they just get away. In fact, makes you reckless.

Its a good move! I was tempted but Puncheon but went Ramirez as others in ML already had him.

I know what you mean by reckless though... taken a few hits as of late but think I'm happy with my team at the moment but like you said it only looks good on paper as of now!

Right, regarding a certain Sanchez Jose Enrique.

Lots of debate about where he plays and whether he's nailed on so the best thing is to go back to the evidence - gametime and positions over the season. Only this will give us the context to decide whether he is a viable option now. It's quite interesting seeing how he has ended up at left forward, so read on guys...

At the start of the season Martin Kelly (RB) and Glen Johnson (LB) were the fullbacks. This may have been due Enrique carrying an injury at the start of the season if I recall correctly. Enrique made his first appearance in GW2 subbing on in the 66th minute for Kelly. Enrique played at LB and Johnson moved to RB.

The following game in GW3 he made his first start, Enrique playing LB and Johnson RB again. Unfortunately they lost 2-0 to Arsenal and this seems to have triggered Enrique being dropped for a whole 4 games.

In GW4 & GW5 Rodgers persisted with Kelly RB and Johnson LB. Unfortunately Kelly got a cruciate ligament injury in GW5, so Rodgers had the option of bringing Enrique back. Instead of doing this, he brought teenager Andre Wisdom in to cover at RB and kept Johnson at LB, benching Enrique. He persisted with this from GW6 to GW8.

This is where it gets interesting. With Wisdom and Johnson solid at fullback, Rodgers is trying to work out what to do with his former left back. It's actually in the final 17 minutes of GW8 actually that Enrique gets his first OOP appearance. He is brought on for Suso and plays at left forward.

Johnson misses out in GW9-10, so Enrique plays both gameweeks at LB alongside Wisdom at RB.

In GW11, Rodgers switches to 3-5-2 to play Chelsea so he plays Wisdom at CB, Enrique LWB and Johnson RWB. Again, Enrique plays advanced when he is not required in defence.

In GW12, Rodgers starts Enrique at left forward for the first time with Wisdom RB and Johnson LB.

In GW13, Wisdom misses out with injury. Rodgers still starts Enrique at left forward with Downing covering at LB and Wisdom at RB.

So what do we make of this all? Over the course of the season Enrique has been converted from LB to LWB to left forward. Since being converted, on the one occasion a fullback has been injured, he has stayed at left forward (GW13). Before being converted, Rodgers preferred playing Johnson instead of him at LB (GW1-2, 4-5, 6-8). It was only when Johnson was injured that he was allowed to play at LB (GW9-10). So he's clearly behind Johnson at LB.

I would say he is now being treated as a left winger by Rodgers. Perhaps like how Bale moved from LB to LW but is only considered at LB under dire circumstances. Rodgers wants to play him advanced but not in defence, unless there is literally no-one else available at left back.

All adds up to Enrique staying OOP IMO. Wisdom will be back very soon I believe, so he will simply replace Downing and they'll be back to normal. Enrique can stay left forward instead of Suso. Suso's only a raw teenager.

Only time will tell, he's been experimenting, Rodgers, and it's been paying off, Enrique did well against Chelsea, and then the next week, he got a goal. I can't see a reason why Rodgers would play Downing on the wings now.

Yep, Downing has absolutely nothing to offer in attack and even less in defence. He's on the road to nowhere.

1 assist every 4 games would easily pay off Enrique's price IMO.

I'd like to think he went off had his head shaved and when he came back in disguise convinced Rogers he was in fact a left winger who had just signed.

I'm contemplating on whether to sell Mata for Silva this gameweek or hold on to see how Chelsea shape up under Benitez.

Does anyone think there is a chance Mata will be rested? I have a hunch that Silva will outscore Mata, but then again Mata is the home player.

Sigh, this game makes me spend waaaaay to much time wondering about these things.

In addition I was going to do Wilkinson to Nelsen to free up funds. Does anyone think Harry will leave Nelsen on the bench?

To be honest, Hazard's the most nailed on mid to start midweek. Moses looked good when he came on, so I'm expecting a start for him too. That leaves us with Oscar and Mata. I'm assuming it's Oscar who's going to be benched.

    Good evening Guys,

I have 2FTs this week and am thinking:

    A) Baines, Michu and Oscar ---> Nastasic, Silva and Ramirez/AJohnson
    B) Baines and Oscar ---> Nastasic and Silva

Sick of Baines' lack of clean sheets as that 7.5 really does eat away at my budget.

    What do you think?

I've just got rid of Baines, time will tell over wether right or wrong......it did enable me to bring in Silva and Aguero 🙂

Top questions on my mind currently:

    1) Is Tevez now flotsam?
    2) Will Hazard ever return to his initial form?
    3) Even if Caz never had any consistent form, is there a better option in that bracket?
    4) Why in the heck are Demel and Noble still clinging to my team?
    5) Does this Caulker chap have any drawbacks preventing him being on 190% on FISO right now? He looks like a steal to me.
    6) Does anyone have access to a magic 8 ball which might answer these questions? 😉
