Moving Target

Moving Target – Jerome Thomas

Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway made his third signing of the close season last week by acquiring Jerome Thomas on a free transfer. The 30-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a two-year deal and follows Dwight Gayle and Stephen Dobbie to the club as Holloway strengthens his side in preparation for next term.

Speaking to the Palace official website, Thomas admitted he had a number of offers on the table but, following talks with the Eagles boss, was convinced he’ll have a part to play for in the season ahead:

“It was a case of me being on a free and weighing up my options. I wanted to stay at the top level, which is obviously the Premier League. I heard of Crystal Palace’s interest from January actually, and once they got promoted Ollie gave me a call when I was away on holiday, we had a good talk for about 45 minutes and after that conversation there wasn’t much doubt in my mind where I wanted to go. I hope I can bring a lot to the team. I’ve got experience of the Premier League and the gaffer’s going to give me the freedom to play how I want to play – my attacking game – which I haven’t been able to do for the last couple of seasons. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Thomas failed to make a single Premier League appearance for the Gunners. Farmed out on loan to QPR between 2001-03, he featured just 10 times over two seasons and found the net three times before Charlton snapped him up for £100,000 back in 2004.

Established as a regular at The Valley, the winger went on to make 103 appearances, producing seven goals and four assists for the Championship club before making his way to then-Premier League Portsmouth on loan in August 2008. Thomas signed a permanent one-year deal just a few days later but a spine problem put paid to his game time and restricted him to a couple of appearances.

He was then snapped up by West Brom as a free agent the following summer and proceeded to play a pivotal part in the Baggies return to the top-flight, scoring seven times and providing a pair of assists in 27 Championship appearances. Thomas’ most impressive campaign in the Premier League arrived in 2010/11, where he managed three goals and seven assists in 33 appearances, but the installation of Roy Hodgson and, subsequently, Steve Clarke, proved detrimental to his prospects. The winger managed just one goal and three assists in 39 appearances over the past two seasons and was farmed out on loan to Leeds for a brief spell last term, producing a goal and pair of assists in six matches before returning to his parent club.

The Prospects

Judging by Thomas’ comments, it certainly seems that he’s been given assurance of game time over the season ahead as Holloway looks for a little extra top-flight experience in order to prevent Palace from slipping straight back into the Championship. While the Eagles boss fielded Yannick Bolasie on the left flank for the vast majority of last season’s matches, it was noticeable that he turned to youngster Jonathan Williams for the play-offs – a suggestion that he wasn’t quite settled on a regular for the position.

Alternatively, Thomas could be handed the role in “the hole” behind a lone forward in Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation for the season ahead and if he’s afforded the above-mentioned “freedom”, could prove a canny purchase by the Londoners. Yet to be listed by either the Sun Dream Team or the Sky Sports games, Thomas’ appeal for the 2013/14 is mainly down to a cut-price valuation of 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, making his perfect fifth midfielder material.

With virtually every other midfielder under 5.0 plying their trade in a more defensive position, Thomas’ popularity is likely to take an unexpected hike as we analyse the Player Lists for this season’s Raheem Sterling or Jason Puncheon. While there will surely be more alternatives to come over the next few weeks as clubs bolster their squads, the likes of Villa’s Aleksandar Tonev, Southampton’s Victor Wanyama and Hull trio Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady or Roberto Koren (all priced at 5.0) could appeal to those eyeing up a midfield rotation partner for the former Baggies man, with the latter two offering a solid option over the first seven Gameweeks.

Essentially, then, we’re not expecting Thomas to light up the top-flight on a weekly basis but at that price, he could prove decent value for money if Holloway is true to his word and hands him a regular role.

    To Jibbly:

It's not that I have concerns about Rodriguez's playing time, I just think that Lambert's output will be superior. But I also think that Mirallas' will be superior to that of Snodgrass; hence Snod + Lamb or Miral + JRod. It's a pain in the neck!

Another argument against Jussi, by the way, is that you're paying 5.5 for a mid-table keeper when someone like Szczesny is available for the same price, and the big guns are only 0.5 more.

Thanks man - I follow your logic.

I know this sounds facetious, but your question then becomes whose output do you think will be superior (relatively speaking) out of Rodriguez and Mirallas? I know this goes against what I recommended, but having thought it through I personally see there being a bigger gap between Lambert and Rodriguez than between Snodgrass and Mirallas. So I guess that makes me lean towards Snodgrass and Lambert..

Anyone notice SpiderM4tt story had very few transfers on injuries, non playing players etc?

Week 1 for me is entirely all about picking safe. Get a general template side but above all, ensure you aren't sorting out problems weeks 2-7 etc.

Make sure transfers are about getting points in the near future, not about avoiding value loss or keeping a full squad.

With that, week 1 must have no players of any slight risk.

These preseason friendlies are extra interesting this year; as you can see from the posts we don't really know how City, Chelsea, Liverpool or indeed United will line up this year.

Will City go with two strikers (Aguero & Negredo?) or one (just Aguero?), do Chelsea make Lukaku their Drogba II, will Sturridge recover in time to see how he and Aspas fit into the team, what reshuffles will United make once their transfers presumably go through?

United seem to have been looking for a central midfielder for ages, can't imagine they would go without - their chase for Thiago has ended now, but I could imagine them tying up Fellaini who unsurprisingly has reportedly expressed a preference for joining Moyes over Wenger. Should have mentioned it's United's potential sale of Rooney that is the biggest uncertainty.

I think Silva could get pushed out wide with Aguero 'in the hole' to accommodate Negredo so perhaps you can downgrade Silva & use the funds to grab Aguero back?

Finally, Berbatov as a rough 5 weeks with trips to SUN, NEW & CHE along with ARS coming to town. Perhaps waiting & then snatching him up could prove a good bit of business...

Maybe. Last season I did a full season rotation plan. THAT was too distant to worry about. now I'm just doing it up to January. I know in all likelihood something will make it redundant, but if everything goes to plan it means no defensive transfers and no really tough fixtures. I think if things don't go to plan it also gives a good basis for working from - you're not going to have to make transfers to field a decent defence in gw8 just when the rest of your team's falling apart...

Keepers are giving me a headache. 9.0 for keepers just isn't cutting it this year. I don't want to go Palace - Hull. What sets do people like? Heck, I'm willing to move 0.5m to get a decent build for weeks to come. Best 9.5/9.0 keeper rotations?

    Current team looks like this:

    9.5m keepers
    Nastasic, Mertesacker, Alcaraz, Turner, Parr
Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Britton (BP darling apparently...)
    Sturridge, Berbatov, Rodriguez

Thanks! I'm seeing this pair a fair amount.

        But West Brom and Southampton?

Those two aren't likely to keep many clean sheets over the season.

I've also read up on Vorm - Marshall as being a potentially good pair. Problem is, tough-ish fixtures to start the season..

Krul/Westwood for sure (can replace Westwood for Mannone, but unlikely he takes top spot)

for 10.5 you get Hart though. currently leaning that way

      Nice team

For me, Alcaraz to a Southampton defender - they might be improved with Wanyama joining, then beef up Rodriguez. Hold on, Alcaraz is £4.5!

Leaning towards Ruddy and McGregor in goal at the moment. Week 8 and 15 are the only issues. Moving one on for a form keeper in week 8 might work out ok

      B)
If Benteke goes to TOT? as 7mil sttikers are a crap shoot at this stage of the season sir.

      A)
That said, why not Walcott & Aspas for LIV at 7mil.

I'm not a proponent of the uber cheapo 5 player rotation defense.

Sooner than not an injury or player being dropped will have you scrambling to make a 'horizontal' transfer for another 4mil defender who likely wont fit the rotation & ultimately suck.
      (See RDG last year)

Feel you'd do well to have at least one nailed on defender from a Top 4 side.
Example: Evra, Baines, Ivanovic, G Johnson & Vertonghen all having 'similar' production to the likes of midpriced-midfielders like Pienaar, Snodgrass & Nolan last year.
