Moving Target

Moving Target – Danny Graham

Hull City boss Steve Bruce added to his forward options late last week by acquiring Danny Graham on a season-long loan deal from Sunderland. The former Swansea man is the club’s seventh signing of the summer and follows the likes of Allan McGregor, Curtis Davies, Maynor Figueroa and Ahmed Elmohamady to the KC Stadium as The Tigers prepare for life back in the Premier League.

Having fallen out of favour under Paolo Di Canio after just six months at Sunderland, Graham’s security of game time looks set for a significant increase in the season ahead. Judging by his new manager’s comments, it’s clear that Bruce – who has an option to make the deal permanent at the end of 2013/14 – is a huge fan of the 27-year-old:

Going with Aguero, really do not want to take the risk early on and start badly.

I'm still surprised so many people actually have teams at this point. Why? Well, this Negredo business outlines my point. Pre-season bandwagons stopping and starting without anything actually happening.

        Aye. A few 4, 5 nils possible.
        Remember 2011-12 beginning?
Everyone scored high at the start.
        Nasri, Aguero, Silva, Toure, Dzeko.
Get 1. Even aguero and silva are a risk, but they'll all get decent returns early on I think.

Negredo has more goals in him than any other city attacker. Even when he is a sub, his goal threat from the bench will still be pretty high. He'll end on about 24 goals and 200+ points I think.

Tripling up on Southampton defenders is something I thought of and decided I didn't like. What if someone like JRod really takes off? You can't get him in. Or something happens to one of your other defenders and you're forced to bring a Southampton player with a terrible fixture in? If you've got 2 defenders from 2 different clubs on the bench, there's more chance of 1 having a favourable fixture.

we have Walker and Naughton on RB, Vert, Kaboul, Daws and Caulker on CB, Rose, BAE, Naughton and Vert again on LB.

If I should have a guess, it will be

Walker Kaboul Vertonghen and Dawson//BAE depending on opposition (with Vert moving to LB)

I think you're missing my point, Azi, Negrado and Kags are not guaranteed starters and you're blowing quite a lot of your budget on them. Its not going to be any consolation when one of your subs comes in for a one pointer or ones you selected come on as a sub with ten mins to go.

I completely get your point. Pozuelo, Kaboul aren't guaranteed starters yet either. Just looking at a few combos. I'll have 15 starters for GW1 and 1 cheap keeper, 2x 4.0 defenders and a cheap mid or forward to maximise the potential for my strongest 11.

none, stay away. Even i wouldn't consider going for a defender from us, we'll concede buckets of goals. If you really want one I'd go either Parr or Ward.

I doubt he'll play out wide, he's not that kind of player, but I've seen multiple sources that Carlton Cole is to undergo a medical on Wednesday so could rival Gayle's place in the starting lineup.

Since it is very difficult to have a well rounded team this year with RVP (and Bale) in, I have carried out some research to help me pick the ‘best three strikers’ based on form and recent stats.

From analyzing Striker’s Points Per Game last year (seen below) as well as other factors such as game time, current club, club form, transfers brought in etc. I have been able to put together an attacking three, which I believe will offer me the best return on investment.

While compiling many RMTs, I noticed a trend, a well rounded team if my strike force costs between 22-26million and a not so strong all round team if it costs 26-31mill.

As you can see I have also included the *new players below, based on 4 points per goal, 2 for 90minuts, 3 for assists and an average bonus, based on what players scored in FPL with similar stats:

*Bony, 8mill, 8.1 PPG (Rough Minutes Combined - 30 games)
    Van P, 14mill, 7.55 Points Per Game (Minutes Combined - 34.7 games)
    Sturridge, 9mill, 7.11 PPG (MC - 13.9 games)
    Lukaku, 8mill, 7.00 PPG (MC - 22.7 games)
    *Altidore, 7mill, 6.67 PPG (RMC - 33 games)
    Podolski, 8.5mill, 6.66 PPG (MC - 22.1 games)
    Suarez, 11mill, 6.46 PPG (MC - 32.8 games)
    Rooney, 10.5mill, 6.39 PPG (MC - 22.4 games)
    Aguero, 11mill, 5.60 PPG (MC - 21.6 games)
    *Gayle, 5mill, 5.60 PPG (RMC - 44 games)
    *Cornelius, 5.5mill, 5.5 PPG (RMC - 32 games)
    Ba, 8.5mill, 5.41 PPG (MC - 28.1 games)
    Lambert, 7.5mill, 5.38 PPG (MC - 34.7 games)
    Benteke, 9mill, 5.30 PPG (MC - 31.3 games)
    *Helenius, 5.5mill, 5.18 PPG (RMC - 33 games)
    Berbatov, 7.5mill, 5.16 PPG (MC - 31.6 games)
    Crouch, 6mill, 4.96 PPG (MC - 25.8 games)
    *RVW, 7mill, 4.73 PPG (RMC - 30 games)
    Giroud, 8.5mill, 4.67 PPG (MC - 25.9 games)
    Torres, 9mill, 4.65 PPG (MC - 28.6 games)
    Defoe, 8.5mill, 4.63 PPG (MC - 26.8 games)
    *Aspas, 7mill, 4.62 PPG (RMC - 34 games)
    J-Rod, 6mill, 4.45 PPG (MC - 24.2 games)
    Carroll, 7.5mill, 4.44 PPG (MC - 21.7 games)
    Kone, 7mill, 4.30 PPG (MC - 32.6 games)
    Weimann, 6mill, 4.21 PPG (MC- 24.9 games)
    Adebayor, 8mill, 4.05 PPG (MC - 17.7 games)
*Anelka – 5.5mill, Useless last year, but we know what he can do.

At 25million (which affords us the scope of having a strong all round team) the obvious frontline would be:

Bony / Sturridge / Lukaku (Total of 22.21 PPG)

However, this very much depends on the latter’s game time, depending on what business is conducted at Chelsea between now and 31st August.

Working on this analysis very much depends on how well the new signings can adapt to the Premier League, but as seen with Michu last year, previous seasons form can be replicated in the premier league. Hence, this research could prove vital.

More/Less game time for a certain few is also something to consider.

Other options I like the look of are:

    30mill - Van Persie / Gayle / Aguero (Total of 18.72 PPG)

All guaranteed starters (I’d say), so room for improvement, but a punchy price and Crystal Palace could struggle to adapt.

    And…

    29mill - Aguero / Lambert / Berbatov (Total 16.14)

All on penalties, which is highly underated. All three looking to push on from last season for different reasons. Lambert was recently quoted saying he ‘didn’t perform as well as he could this season’. Aguero, understandably was disappointed, with himself and rotation. And Berbatov is looking more settled, a season under his belt at Fulham, so should do more this time out.

I welcome your ideas from the research I have carried out above.

    Hope this helps…

Agreed. But Michu was playing for Rayo Vallecano, a middle rate Spanish team, in a league less competitive than the Premier League. Yet, he scored more Premier League goals than La Liga goals.

It definitely offers a rough guide.

Think your problem is with midfield - Wanyama, Ramsey and Colback could end up with just 2-3 goals between them all season. Downgrade Boruc to a 4.0 GK as you don't need to rotate Mig.

Been thinking about this for days........When it comes to the discussion surrounding RVP/Bale....Should I have both? One or the other? or Neither?

When determining which way to go, I asked myself the question. "If i make the wrong decision which will hurt more"

    1. RVP no Bale - 51% Bale ownership ouch!
    2. Bale no RVP - surely the odds on favorite to win the golden boot for a third straight season. Gets attacking returns in 80% of starts "Only" 36% ownership. If he has a smashing start, and you think it is difficult to get him in your squad at 14.0M try it at 14.5 and 40% ownership. ouch!
    3. Neither....well that is just insanity. double ouch!
    4. If RVP or Bale fail miserably you can always downgrade along with the other 1.3 Million Bale owners and 1 Million RVP owners. It will hurt, but at least you are not alone!

    IMHO....you have to have both.
