Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Forwards

We roll out the eighth article in our assessment of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this morning. Having previously published articles on Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders, we then looked at Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders and Premium Midfielders. Up next, then, we turn our attentions to the men up front, focussing on players no more than 6.0:

Up to 5.5 Mark

Cardiff new boy Andreas Cornelius is likely to earn plenty game time in his debut season for the Bluebirds. “The Danish Tank” racked up 18 goals in 32 appearances for FC Copenhagen in 2012/13 but with just one full season of professional football behind him, there are concerns he may take time to adapt. Malky Mackay’s penchant for a target man within a lone striker system should ensure the 5.5 priced Cornelius plenty starts, while the likes of Fraizer Campbell (also 5.5) is more likely to earn game time off the bench when the Welsh club need to alter their approach and switch to two up front later on in games. Craig Bellamy is similarly priced and classified as a midfielder – he also has a share of corner and free-kicks but a role on the flank somewhat limits his appeal; the Welshman’s propensity for picking up injuries is also an issue, with just 33 appearances last time out. Cornelius looks the best bet of this trio, then, though a tricky start to the season may deter many.

With top scorer Glenn Murray sidelined for months due to a cruciate ligament injury, Crystal Palace new boy Dwight Gayle looks set to lead the line in Ian Holloway’s 4-2-3-1 formation. Coming in at 5.0, the former Peterborough forward looks in the driving seat to start the season for Palace – as mentioned in the recent Scout Report, Holloway has high expectations for a player who has cost a club record £4.5m. Free agent Carlton Cole is also being linked with a move to Selhurst Park but given the outlay on Gayle, he’d surely be ahead of the former West Ham man in the pecking order.

Palace’s home/away rotation with Hull could bring Danny Graham into consideration as a partner for Gayle. The Tigers on loan forward may have struggled last time out but he did, nonetheless, score 12 times in 36 appearances a couple of seasons ago for Swansea – at 5.5, he may still offer decent value and seems to have leapt ahead of Sone Aluko (5.0) in the pecking order. Alternatively, the likes of Robert Koren, Ahmed Elmohamady and Robbie Brady are cheaper in the Hull midfield at 5.0 apiece and offer an alternative rotation partner for Gayle. Similarly, pairing Graham with Palace midfielder Jerome Thomas (4.5) would also set you back a combined 10.0 and offers a schedule of (NOR, SUN. CAR, SWA, WHM, AVL, FUL) between Gameweeks 2-8.

Everton’s Victor Anichebe comes in 5.5 but with Arouna Kone added to the ranks and Nikica Jelavic also to consider, the Nigerian is likely to struggle for regular game time under new boss Roberto Martinez. Granted, Anichebe is versatile enough to play on the right though with Kevin Mirallas expected to get the nod, his minutes look far from guaranteed this time out. Hugo Rodallega also comes in at 5.5 and has impressed in pre-season but the Colombian remains behind Dimitar Berbatov and Bryan Ruiz for the forward roles – given that Ruiz is just 0.5 more expensive and offers the assurance of starts, Rodallega – like Anichebe – is likely to depend on game time off the bench.

Indeed, there’s a real shortage of forward options in the sub 6.0 bracket. Newcastle’s Shola Ameobi and Norwich’s Luciano Becchio may be cheap at 5.0 apiece but look like no more than bench fodder for their respective clubs, despite the former scoring in each of the Magpies last two matches. The arrival of Mark Hughes may promote Kenwyne Jones or Cameron Jerome (both 5.0) in the pecking order but with Peter Crouch looking likely to get the nod, Hughes is expected to go shopping for a more natural goalscorer to partner Crouch in his attempt to bring a more attacking brand of football to the Britannia.

Nicolas Anelka, on the other hand, looks to have a better Fantasy potential than most budget forwards – his versatility could see the Frenchman fielded through the middle or on the right as Steve Clarke prepares for life without Romelu Lukaku at the Hawthorns. At 5.5, Anelka – who notched twice in the Baggies’ last friendly – is also cheaper than the likes of midfielder James Morrison (6.0) and has Southampton, Swansea and Sunderland at home in the first five. Bearing in mind West Brom rotate with Aston Villa all season, he could offer a home/away partnership with Aleksandar Tonev for those eying up Paul Lambert’s new signing – at 5.0 in midfield, Tonev paired with Anelka would set you back 10.5, for those confident the Bulgarian will nail down a starting berth under Paul Lambert. Markus Rosenberg is even cheaper at 5.0 for the Baggies and notched in the club’s first two pre-season friendlies but is expected to move further down the pecking order when Clarke adds to his squad over the next few weeks.

Ricardo Vaz Te will be hoping Andy Carroll remains on the sidelines with a heel problem as the season gets underway. The former is typically fielded wide right by Sam Allardyce but looks the current favourite to be handed the lone forward role if Carroll fails to recover – with home games against Cardiff and Stoke and a trip to Newcastle in the first three, Vaz Te, at 5.5, may prove a decent short-term punt until the big Geordie regains full fitness.

The 6.0 Mark

For a fraction more budget, though, Fantasy managers are afforded greater security by a number of regulars. Andreas Weimann looks key to Villa’s prospects in the season ahead and racked up seven goals, four assists and 13 bonus points in his breakthrough year at the midlands outfit. Fielded on the right of a front three, the young Austrian offers the most budget-friendly route into Paul Lambert’s forward line- with Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and City in the first six, many may steer well clear, though Weimann may appeal for those on the hunt for a cheap striker in light of Villa’s double Gameweek 1.

Bryan Ruiz has been handed a 6.0 price tag after producing four goals and 10 assists in 2012/13. The Costa Rican has already scored in each of Fulham’s three pre-season games but his withdrawn role in “the hole”, allied with Dimitar Berbatov’s kind pricing and spot-kick duties, may see him struggle to convince investors of jumping on board. Four eye-catching fixtures between Gameweek 4-8 (WBA, CAR, STO, cpl) look particularly prosperous for the Cottagers, with Ruiz’s creativity likely to benefit.

The arrival of Mauricio Pochettino transformed Jay Rodriguez’s Fantasy potential in the latter half of last season. Having struggled to produce for previous boss Nigel Adkins, the former Burnley man proved himself to be more or less a match for Rickie Lambert under Pochettino and with game time looking secure, he’s already up and running in pre-season, scoring three times in two appearances. Lambert’s spot-kicks and set-piece duties, allied with his more advanced role and 7.5 price tag, is likely to sway many but Rodriguez’s much-improved form could turn out to be better value if his displays under the Argentine continue to flourish.

Peter Crouch will be hoping Mark Hughes’ arrival at Stoke can bolster his attacking potential. With 130 and 128 points accrued over the past couple of season, Crouch’s returns haven’t been too unimpressive – a drop in price, allied with the installation of a managers determined to go on the offensive, may subsequently see Crouch offer decent value in the season ahead. With a better quality delivery from the flanks, the six foot seven Potters forward may yet prove an overlooked differential for our three man frontlines as Stoke look to improve upon last term’s dire 34-goal haul under Tony Pulis. The fact that Stoke failed to register a single shot on target in their first match under Hughes earlier this week, however, suggests they are still clearly adjusting to his new approach.

Guys, there's a lot of hype surrounding Thomas. Whilst I can see the appeal he is far from nailed on for a few reasons:

    - palace are still in the hunt for another winger (I think we will end up signing former arsenal winger Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, but if not we've a few more wide men on trial)

    - I'm not sure we will play with 2 wingers that often this season. Last year, in the big games (playoffs) we only played one out and out winger- Zaha- instead favoring to pack the central midfield a bit more. Given we will be likely under pressure in most (every?!) games, can we afford to set up and attack with 2 wingers? For me Thomas would be behind Bolasie, but at the very least there will be rotation.

    - if your going to have a £4.5m bench warmer, chances are you are only going to need points from him 5-10 times in the season. On those rare occasions do you want him to be at risk of even starting?

He is popular now as he is really the only 4.5m mid playing an attacking wide role with potential for goals and assists.

I haven't really found any others yet....

It's a good point, and I'm not armed with many better options. For me it's worth finding the extra 0.5m and actually rotating the player, rather than pure bench fodder.

But, if you do want someone to sit 3rd on your bench each week might a guaranteed 2 pointer be preferable? Maybe Tiote?

I'm also keeping an eye on the new Swansea mid.

Yeah i like Tiote in real life - but he's been dreadful fantasy wise...he can only get better...
Cabral at Sunderland is starting to get a little exciting - had a goal the other day - should get the minutes.....has no history of goals/assists, so maybe he could suprise

Struggling to decide whether to go with 3 Chelsea players GW1 or just 2. Team right now:

    Mignolet/Boruc
    Azpi/Coleman/Collins/Shaw/Chester
    Hazard/Bale/Walcott/Snodgrass/Koren
    Aguero/RvW/Gayle

    0.5 in the bank.

    Should I:
    A) Stick with this team, doing Azpi -> Mertesacker and Snodgrass -> Mirallas over the next 2 weeks
    B) Change Walcott to Oscar, and get Walcott in GW2
    C) Change RvW to J.Rod and Walcott to Mata, and get Walcott GW2

Possibly but I haven't been following either. I'm not a Chelsea fan but checked their pre-season tour section and checked the write up and didn't see Mata listed under the teams for the previous two games.
It might be that he is being rested but then the media also reports that Mourinho doesn't like him - but then that is the media talking!

Hazard has had a perfect pre-season, getting the right amount of gametime being involved in all the games so far. Mata is still on holiday and will join up with the team in London, as well as having the crazy long flight for the Ecuador friendly and a higher price tag. At the moment I'm not touching him, maybe after the blank.

Reasons why RVP wont be top scorer this season:

Only two player have won the EPL golden boot 3 times in a row. Shearer and Henry. Both were under the age of 28 when they achieved this feat.

Injury proneness shows that the last two seasons have been customarily rare for RVP. The change in manager and backroom staff may have an effect on RVP fitness and hence his injury proneness. In fact it has already been suggested by some that Moyes fitness regimes are outdated and not effective. (I personally think that’s bobbins, there was nothing wrong with Everton’s fitness last season, in fact you could argue quite the opposite looking at that team)

Moyes in the past has been prone to defensive formations and style of play. Last season in particular Everton only scored 3 goals in a PL match on 5 occasions. They never surpassed 3 goals in a match the entire PL season.

Reasons why RVP will be top scorer this season:

    He has the quality.

Has a cracking midfield who will be supplying him with plenty of quality chances.

If Fabergas is signed then a natural partnership is again struck up.

RVP will be first choice and will be on the pitch if fit.

Moyes is not prone to rotation. (if this was because of lack of choice at Everton remains to be seen)

Lets all face the fact that if RVP is the top scorer this season, everyone will/should have him in there team regardless of cost, if your stubborn and will not have him regardless because of his price, you are kidding yourself and you’ll struggle.

That being said which camp you in? Top scorer or not? Any other reason for or against to consider?

a bit of flawed logic there imo

The first paragraph is illogical - just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it is less likely ....

If RVP is top scorer it doesn't necessarily follow that he should be in everyone's team. It's about points per pound spent - and there may be more efficient ways to spend your money

I think it will be close, but I would back someone like Aguero to score more.

I don't necessarily follow the logic that you need to have the top goalscorer in the Premier League and you are stubborn if you don't have him. If RvP, at £14m, scores 20 goals but Benteke, at £9m, scores 18, Rodriguez scores 17, at £6m, and Giroud, priced at £8.5m, scores 15, the latter three are far better value for money and would allow you to reinvest the money saved elsewhere.

Only 2 players, that actually indicates that is is very achievable, plus removes 6 seasonsof the PL. RVP is not injury prone, he was once upon a time, why peope still apply this tag to one of the least injury prone players in the PL for the past few seasons is beyond me.

Moyes has never been prone to defensive formations...If anything he is one of the best at giving his full backs free reign..If there wasa problem scoring it had more to do with Jelavic's form falling off a cliff than anything to do with being too cautious...Agreed on the injury/RVP time...Three seasons in a row of injury free playing time is a big ask....

I've not been paying that much attention to football outside of the Premiership over the last few seasons so these articles are a bit of a godsend, thanks Paul!

I've basically been breaking my balls trying to fit in the big four of Aguero, RVP, Hazard and Bale and I've done so but obviously the rest of the team (Arteta aside) is a bit, well, mediocre. Now I have been reconsidering the whole idea of getting those big guns in, sure they may each score 200 points + over the season, but is it better to spread the wealth around?

Eggs in one basket for me at the moment. The simple reason for this is captain consistency. That's what the big hitter provide. Without them you need to a genius who can also predict the future to get it right week in and out.

The big hitter give you a fairly good shout ever week of getting you double points if you captain them.

Leaving RVP out allows you to get the other big guns without having to rely on fodder every week. As an example:

      Mignolet, 4m
Toure, Clyne, M Turner, Parr, Chester
      Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Lampard/Kagawa, Thomas
      Aguero, Lukaku, J Rod

Getting RVP into that (nothing in bank) is very difficult without adding some weak links.

I honestly can't see myself leaving RVP out if he's fit. Mainly because of his points potential and the fact that he is sure to have a very large ownership (ditto Bale). Combine huge ownership with huge potential and your rank is rightly knackered if he has a great week.

This isn't true. Since you've spread the money around, you may have other players who can match a great RVP score. You're not automatically doomed if RVP has a good day. And if it's against opposition where most people wouldn't captain him, chances are you have better captaincy options than RVP owners.

It's a tough starting selection isn't it and we're not even close to the end of the window yet?! I dunno, I've been tempted to get Negredo and save the extra bit of cash from Aguero to reinvest. I suppose the whole tweak of bonus points might mean there are a few bargains I'm not seeing.

      Crazy talk!

If you look at last season, the 'Big Four' were Aguero, Rooney, RVP and Silva. How many of them provided good value for money. Er, one.

You have to spread the risk. The less you spend on individuals, the wider you spread the risk of not picking the right one! (if that makes sense).

But the point is that if you have these big four players it is MUCH easier to downgrade them in the case of injury or lack of form without a wildcard than to try and go the other way and crowbar in highly priced players.

It's a pragmatic and defensive opening side that gives time to assess which of the big players are going to be vital.

Four big buns equates to 800 points over the season. Those mediocre players need to bring in 1300 points. I don't think that's possible, you need to drop at least one of your big hitters to get your vfm up.

The weekly totals are not just a sum of all the players in your squad.

It takes into account the fact your captain will score double, and it knows how likely your best captain choice is to play, and it takes into account the strength of your bench players.

      Hope that helps.

    Okay, technical question.

I have moved Rooney into my team just in case he moves to Chelsea. At his point I will have 4 Chelsea players and can play them all as long as I make no changes to my team.

If after this point Bale goes to Real Madrid, I lose him from my squad and have an empty position. Do I now need to change my 4 Chelsea players to fill my empty spot?

If I remove Bale now and Rooney switches then I can't bring in Bale later if he doesn't switch. Its a quandary. Basically if they both move its not possible to have 4 Chelsea players.

Hello lads, just modified my team with news of the Chelsea DGW, here's how the new draft looks. Please comment -

    Mignolet (Lewis)

Ivanovic M. Turner J.Collins (Chester Parr)

    Hazard Bale Mirallas Walcott (Thomas)

    Sturridge Lukaku Van Wolf

    1) Is Lewis the best 4.0 mill goalie who is closest to starting?
    2) Is Mirallas nailed on (I assume he will play in the forward 3 if Martinez goes for 3-4-3)
    3) Does Van Wolf take penalties?

    Am still pondering,
    Mirallas ---> Snodgrass
Wolf ---> J Rod/Lambert (wait to see who plays ahead)
Sturridge ---> Aguero (since he takes penalties as well)

    Thoughts?

Has anyone sacrificed OR for Mini League victory? I remember last year from gw35 to 38 i was looking for differentials and the blockers? I know its the cliche of pick the players who you think will score more but if youre behind and your rival has them you need a differential. Or if youre a head and youre rival has a differential chose a blocker. I wanted Nolan for GW38 but i ended up getting a blocker and won my ML but my OR dropped. If nolan do FA and the differential went mental id have lost the 200 quid prize.

I've never been in that position where I needed to choose, but it would depend on how high OR I have and what the mini league means to me. If it's a big cash league, then it's the mini league all the way.

But then if I have a chance to finish in a decent OR and maybe even get a FPL prize, then I'd go for that.

If it was between those two, I'd go Benteke in a heartbeat. Sturridge at the moment is injured fighting fitness, Benteke has a double. Tough fixtures, but Benteke has to be some sort of demi-god in that Villa squad. If Sturridge is confirmed to be back in action and likely to start, I'd reconsider.

With the GW3 blank, do people think getting 3 Chelsea players is creating too much of a headache early on?

Who are the best 4.0 or 4.5 defenders in your opinion. Need help soon as I have to pack to move house soon.

    Thank you 😀
