Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

United end their tour of Asia with a comprehensive win as Jesse Lingard gets amongst the goals once again. Markus Rosenberg and Nicolas Anelka maintain their recent scoring form as West Brom pick up another victory, while Hull edge past Peterborough thanks to a long-range effort from Maynor Figueroa. Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher may miss the start of the season for Sunderland and Roberto Martinez talks up the prospects of Nikica Jelavic for the campaign ahead after the Croatian bagged a brace in a weekend win at Blackburn:

Kitchee 2 Man United 5
David Moyes rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for United’s final match in Asia yesterday afternoon. With Jonny Evans missing out due to an ankle injury, the likes of Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Fabio were handed a starting berth in an experimental line-up at the back, while further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young took the flank roles on either side of Danny Welbeck. The latter opened the scoring with his third pre-season strike before Smalling and Fabio added a goal apiece before the break. Moyes made six changes over the course of the second period and saw two of his subs combine for the fourth after Alexander Buttner teed up Adnan Januzaj before Jesse Lingard grabbed the visitors’ final goal, taking his tally for the summer to four – more than any other United player.

Speaking to United TV after the match, Smalling revealed he was determined to nail down a regular role under the new manager after starting just 10 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge:

“Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with pre-season because I didn’t get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better. It was nice to pop up with a goal too. But to be fair, I probably should have got a hat-trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that. I was waiting for it (the goal), I have been due one because I didn’t get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more.”

Elsewhere, Moyes was given an injury boost after Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia returned to action for a United XI against Crewe last night. The trio had failed to take part in the pre-season tour but are now stepping up their respective recoveries – Valencia played the full 90 minutes, while Vidic and Nani were afforded just over an hour apiece, with the latter notching both goals in a 2-0 win.

Peterborough 0 Hull 1
Steve Bruce’s side registered their first win in four attempts yesterday evening. The Tigers boss continued with a 3-5-2 and shifted Maynor Figueroa to the left of midfield, whilst drafting in his son, Alex, to join James Chester and Curtis Davies in the back-three – the former Wigan man vindicated his manager’s decision to move him to a more advanced berth by notching the only goal of the game with a spectacular 25-yeard strike. Danny Graham was partnered by Sone Aluko up top but failed to notch before making way in one of seven second-half changes by the visitors. From an offensive point of view, the Tigers are still struggling and have scored just twice in the last four games (with one coming from the spot), though Bruce’s side have registered three clean sheets across that quartet of fixtures.

West Brom 3 Atromitos 1
Steve Clarke made eight changes from the side that saw off Derby at the weekend. Yet again, the Baggies boss altered his starting formation and moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Saido Berahino, Markus Rosenberg and Shane Long leading the line as Nicolas Anelka dropped to the bench. With his side a goal down at the break, the Baggies boss made just two alterations, sending on James Morrison and Anelka, and the latter needed just 10 minutes to bring the hosts level with his third goal in as many matches. Rosenberg continued his strong summer form by teeing up Berahino to fire the Baggies in front before scoring his side’s third, taking his tally to four over five pre-season friendlies, the highest scoring West Brom player of the summer so far.

While Clarke has been linked with moves for Scott Sinclair, Salomon Kalou and Matej Vydra as he looks to bolster his frontline, Rosenberg is certainly staking a claim for consideration and prior to the match, the Swede spoke of his determination to atone for a debut season which saw him fail to find the net once in the Premier League:

“I didn’t score too many times last season so I have to score a lot in this campaign. I had a tough time last year so it’s good to have a start like this and to start to score goals. I always knew I could score because I scored in every other country, but it’s still nice to bag a goal and to have a pre-season. I missed the pre-season last year and I think it will be good for me in the campaign to come. It is always the same, it doesn’t matter how much experience you get. In the back of your head you know you can score but you have to prove it to the fans and to the people here.”

In Other News
Reports yesterday suggest Steven Fletcher is losing the race to be ready in time for the start of the season. The Sunderland striker is still struggling from the ankle injury that forced him out towards the end of the previous campaign and may be sidelined until September – meaning he would miss a potentially prosperous opening run of three games against Fulham, Southampton and Palace. Fletcher’s absence would mean Paolo Di Canio is likely to retain a 4-4-1-1 formation for the kick-off, with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind Jozy Altidore, though the former Wolves man may struggle to pick up many investors upon his return, with the Black Cats’ schedule stiffening significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Roberto Martinez has been singing the praises of Nikica Jelavic after the Croatian bagged a brace in Everton’s weekend win at Blackburn. Jelavic was named as a sub at Ewood Park as Martinez handed Arouna Kone the lone forward role in a 4-3-3 but he staked a claim for first-team inclusion after replacing the Ivorian at the break. Having notched just seven times in the season gone by, Jelavic appears to have slipped down the pecking order following Kone’s arrival but he may still have a significant role to play this term, judging by his manager’s comments:

“In modern football it’s a bit unfair to rely on a player to score you 20-25 goals if you don’t do the things well as a team, you’ll never get the striker in good positions. That’s what we’re starting to develop now; a team that can be strong enough off the ball and that can create enough chances for our strikers to take, but it’s not the moment to assess the players as yet. It’s the time to assess them in each individual exercise and see what sort of relationship we can put on the pitch. What we saw [on Saturday] was a Nikica Jelavic that has come back with a real intention of having a very strong season.”

Having reunited with Martinez following their time together at Wigan, Kone had initially appeared nailed-on for a starting berth for the Toffees. With 13% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Ivorian is the seventh most popular striker in the game at the moment but Jelavic’s form is certainly affording his new manager further options for the central forward role, suggesting wide men Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar may be a little more secure as FPL out of position prospects in Martinez’s front three.

Is anybody going for promoted sides H/A rotation?

I'm looking at a strong squad if I put my faith in Thomas and Koren each week at home.
I think Koren will deliver. Think Thomas is a waste in all honesty but it affords me Berb/ Aguero/ Giroud or Lukaka up front.

Seen a lot of people saying Bale and RVP are the two main captaincy options and it's difficult to argue.
RVP's consistency is absolutely staggering really, and I would feel confident captaining him against any team, really. Bale on the other hand, really did become fixture proof over the second half of last season and I would feel comfortable captaining him against anybody now, as well.
But I've seen a lot of people comment on RMT's saying that the team has a lack of captaincy options.. which I find a bit strange, so decided to drum up a bit of discussion about it to see what people think.
Personally, I think more than just RVP + Bale are captaincy options.
But what do you want in a captaincy option? The potential for ten + points or the likelihood of a 6-10 score on a regular basis.

Walcott - 14 goals and 13 assists in minutes totalling 25.5 games, a good few of which were sub appearances at the start of last season. I think Theo should be in most teams this season. Definitely a player I'd consider captaining regularly. Definitely started out his career as a player with inconsistent end product, but I really think he's a top player now and will have a cracking season.

Eden Hazard – Even though Hazard got 9 goals and 16 assists in minutes totalling 29 games, his first season at Chelsea has been considered by some as slightly underwhelming. His comments however, that he wishes to rival Ronaldo and Messi for goals in this and upcoming seasons shows that he at least has the confidence to push on and become the leagues best player. Personally, I don’t think he’ll hit those heights, but I do think he’ll be a regular scorer this season and will be a great captaincy option in a very strong season for Chelsea.

Christian Benteke – Probably the most underrated fantasy player in the league last season, owning him in the second half of the season would have been very beneficial. I, like many, groaned every time he scored, yet never put him in for some idiotic reason I can’t currently comprehend. Benteke scored 19 goals in his first season of English football in a poor Villa team.. I can really see him being a good captaincy option for their decent fixtures in what should be a better team this year.

Daniel Sturridge – Firstly, I expect Luis Suarez to leave Liverpool. Secondly, Sturridge was involved in 16 goals in 14 minutes worth of games played. I think he could be a very good captaincy option this season if Liverpool are looking a consistent side, which is no guarantee.

In captaincy options we also have to look at the in form/guaranteed starting City forwards when they emerge, which they eventually will. Lukaku as Chelsea’s starting forward will become a captaincy option if he can nail down his starting place with some good early season performances. I also feel good about Bony’s prospects as a captaincy option, and even Michu as he resumes his role in th hole. Soldado at Spurs could also be a very good one with his scoring record.
Basically.. I wouldn’t slate a team based on not having RVP and Bale for captaincy options. While they’re the best options there, a team really does suffer with their cost and I do think there are good, and potentially this season, as good options.

Are there any other good captaincy options? Do you think the ones I’ve put forward are bad choices?
Interested to hear what people think

There are always lots of good captaincy options where fixtures make some players obvious choices - like Hazard in GW1 - but Bale and RVP will be the captain of choice most frequently (say 50% of games).

His output is too spikey - I recall many a time he had the armband for a 2 point haul (because he also liked to get a yellow card), meantime RvP got a solid 6-8 points that week.

Yes overall the output is similar, but with players like Suarez you are always at risk of a captaincy rotation screwing you.

True again.. but surely there must come a year when RVP's consistency falters. United's fixtures at the start plus the new manager give us a great chance to sit back and chance not having him for a few weeks to see if he really is essential this year

Gimli, I think the RvP/Bale fascination is merely because there are so many unknown quantities at this stage: entire Citeh Mid/Att, CHE same, Suarez, Rooney etc...

But this will all sort itself over the first 2-4 GWs. Wally is always decent (c) material.

I do think Walcott is a captain option, however he f***ed me over on the last day of the season when I captained him over Bale. Missed a glorious chance, Bale scored a screamer, lost my head to head league.

So part of me hates him.

On the Scoutcast when they went over Julian's captains it was remarkable how he'd had variety and got it correct.

But then I realised it's just a numbers game. In 2.5 million people the ones at the top will be those that choose varied captains and get it correct. Meanwhile a bit lower down with be the RVP religious crew. Then further down still will be the ones who went for variety and got it wrong.

So to win the FPL don't chose RVP, but also expect to finish way down!

    Mannone (Harper)
    Johnson/Coleman/Collins (Clyne/Chester)
    Bale/Hazard/Walcott/Snodgrass (Koren)
    Aguero/Lukaku/Rodriguez

Ignore the bench as this needs a little tinkering. What about the rest?

    Much appreciated

An impressive midfield but that leaves you lacking elsewhere. I would downgrade Bale and Aguero for cheaper options and in Aguero's case better and cheaper options. With the money you would now have upgrade your defense which is in need of some help. Look into getting a relatively cheap starting keeper and put Mannone as your backup becuse at this point he does not look to be starting week 1

Boruc is the obvious choice instead of Mannone but that leaves me a bit too exposed to Soton defense.

Surprised you think mids are strong. I've seen plenty teams here with four mids at 9m+.

strong for the money. those 9+ mids tend to be accompanied by anelka/jrod up top.

aguero is worth the premium early doors imo. can't see anyone getting guaranteed start for city at the moment, but that may change.

if the season were to start tomorrow then this is pretty solid. if bale goes and negredo et al. look more nailed on, then fine, it will need a tinker, but i'd be pretty happy.

that said - why not triple up on che for the dgw? and perhaps weimann / gabby as well?

A few 4.0 defensive options may pop up, and from the 4,5 mids it should be clear who's starting in attacking areas.
Also gives us a chance to see players like Bony and Chadli.

Before I tweet about Gareth Bale -quick word on Utd and Cesc Fabregas. I'm told from Spain if that doesnt happen,Utd's 2nd choice is Modric.

Ok Gareth Bale - following discussions I have had in the last hour with people in Spain my friend @paulbreenturner was very close yesterday when he said he was 75% sure Gareth Bale would be at Real Madrid before the start of our season.I am lead to believe RM's offer is over £90m. I expect this will increase - I reckon Spurs want a round £100m. My guy in Spain says he expects Bale to move poss as soon as next week. Bottom line is NO transfer is 100% but I am pretty cetain if Gareth Bale doesnt play against Monaco this week, it's a done deal.

    Seems legit [haha] 😀

That is very similar to my own, worried that could be because of a slight Liverpool bias we share 😉

Garrido has new competition at LB, now Martin Olsson has signed, so Turner might be a safer option in the Norwich defence.
I'm not convinced with Amorebieta as an option, he should be first choice for Fulham at only 4.5, but is a card magnet, and also I'm not sure Fulham are really going to keep many cleanies, they didn't last season.
Obviously that is a nice rotating bank of cheap defenders, but I'd look for one without Fulham in tbh.

I really like the midfield, though not entirely sure on Silva, but City coverage has to come from somewhere. I'd also consider Negredo to Benteke as a good punt on the DGW.

I'd love him to be a cert, but reckon he'll be brought back slowly because of his injury record. Maybe off the bench GW1, 60-odd minutes GW2?

Toying with Aspas myself, as I figure he might lead the line initially

    Some DGW analysis:

With 3 Chelsea players you're likely playing at least 2 vs United away and then having 1 on the bench in GW3. So over 3 GWs you have from your 3 Chelsea players / subs who'll replace them who I assume will be big budget:

    GW1 - 6 great games
GW2 - 2 meh games (vs UTD) + 1 ok game (since all the best options are now away - LIV, ARS, MCY, I assume you'd already have Bale in GW1 as the only real TOT option)
GW3 - 0 + 1 great game (if you get a City player) + 1 ok game depending (LIV, ARS, UTD and TOT play each other)

Alternatively you go 2 Chelsea plus 1 other big name which will net you:

    GW1 - 4 great games + 1 great game
    GW2 - 1 meh game + 2 ok games
    GW3 - 1 great game + 2 ok games

(definition of great, meh and ok are in my mind only)

So that's 7 great games, 2 ok games and 2 meh games vs 6 great games 4 ok games and 1 meh game.

    Which goes as follows:

    3 Chelsea players gets you:
AVL, AVL, AVL, HUL, HUL, HUL
mun, mun, avl (sub for a Liverpool player)
HUL, SUN, MUN (bring in a city player, play Thomas vs Sunderland)

2 Chelsea players plus a Liverpool player:
    AVL, AVL, HUL, HUL, STO
    mun, avl, avl
    HUL, MUN, MUN

    plus Arsenal player:
    AVL, AVL, HUL, HUL, AVL
    mun, avl, ful
    HUL, MUN, TOT

Morning/afternoon all. Every day I wake up hoping to see Bent news to Newcastle but then I realize it'd mean another hour at the transfer page trying to shave off 0.5m, and I don't think I'll be able to do it this time. Is he a lock for anyone else if the move is made?

I'd very seriously consider him. That said, not quite sure he and Cisse are a match made in Elysium, he might do better alongside Berbs at FUL. But would def be worth a look at any Prem team (bar Villa), excellent goals track record.

West Ham have some great fixtures but the only player I really see cropping up is Collins.

Does anybody rate Nolan, Jarvis or somebody else to rack up the points? I know Carroll is injured but I'm surprised to see the lack of faith in WHU attack.

Hi Doos, sorry to be a bit slow on the uptake but is the Adrián (Jääskeläinen) line effectively saying that Adrián is in your team but will be replaced by Jääskeläinen if pre-season shows he's still first choice? I initially thought it meant you had both but then I noticed your subs!

Presumably you have at least £1.0m spare in that line up as it stands?

You seem to not like Nolan very much but the reality is he scores a lot of goals and has been consistent whenever he's been in the PL. He's been in my team in every single draft so far and it would require something quite big to change this.

  17. Video analysis of Van Ginkel and Bony
    Brutus619
    • 13 Years
    11 years, 3 months ago

Following on from my Youtube player analysis of Carrick (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/07/30/friendlies-round-up-monday/?hc_page=2#hc_comment_5130830) this morning, I thought I would take on two new arrivals from Vitesse Arnham.

Van Ginkel is now a chelsea midfielder and is supposedly seen as a player in the Frank Lampard mould. He is only 20 years old but has scored 18 goals in 89 appearances for his previous team across a spread of 3 seasons. Not a bad return from a deep CM position:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_Il6Gximnw

    A. 00:04 to 00:11 (Technically adept, spinning on the spot before tucking the ball away)
    B. 00:50 to 01:00 (Great long range pass into the feet of the RM)
    C. 01:25 to 01:34 (Again a strong pass but this time to the LM)
    D. 01:45 to 01:56 (Capable of great strikes from long distance)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gogbfC_Pdk

    E. 00:12 to 00:23 (Another solid long range strike)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dggn5d2v_5c

    F. 01:13 to 01:16 (Solid cross onto the head of the striker from free play)
    G. 01:30 to 01:34 (Well weighted pass into the path of the LM's run)
    H. 02:45 to 02:50 (Comfortable finish into bottom right)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1edSGAjADc

    I. 01:13 to 01:20 (Another good cross)

From this it seems that Van Ginkel has the potential to be a great CM playmaker if he performs at a consistently strong level. However, from the lack of highlights it seems that he is very much one for the future and is far from being the finished article in the same way as Frank Lampard as a goal scorer or even Carrick as a deep lying playmaker. G in particular is a highlight that shows this as although his pass was a strong one leading to a goal, it was still slightly over played and Van Ginkel could have used more restraint in delivering the pass.

Bony is a club record signing for Swansea and has scored an admirable 31 goals last season for Vitesse. At 24 years old he is at a developing age but may soon hit his peak if things go his way:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_r486KLjqA

    A. 00:29 to 00:34 (Good poacher's finish)
    B. 00:41 to 00:49 (Well placed headers from distance)
    C. 01:07 to 01:10 (Great long range strike)
    D. 01:40 to 01:48 (Great link up play)
    E. 01:52 to 01:57 (And again)
    F. 01:58 to 02:02 (Another strong header)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1edSGAjADc

    G. 01:58 to 02:10 (Solid finish and a fantastic header)
    H. 02:30 to 02:37 (Great link up)
    I. 02:38 to 02:45 (Nice cheeky finish)

From these clips you can see that Bony knows how to use his head and his fantastic link up play could help him form a lethal partnership with Michu. However, if you read between the lines you will share in my disappointment from seeing that this player who scored 40 goals in his last 2 seasons combined seemed to show very little in terms of taking long range strikes. In fact, many of the clips I did not show involved him using pace before slotting away a finish which was more towards the centre of the goal than either post. Thus I would expect GKs in the prem to save a lot more of his attempts. As long as the likes of Hernandez, Dyer & Routledge supply him with crosses, Bony could be a star. However he may struggle if the ball is constantly played into his feet and a comfortable partnership with Michu does not form in a consistent manner. Much like Demba Ba's decrease in threat once transferred to Chelsea.

Any thoughts & suggestions for my next player analysis?

      Thanks for the analysis Brutus.

I've never seen highlights of either player but Ginkel is a lot more technically adept then perhaps those clips will show. A lot of it is unlikely to make a highlight reel as he can do the simple things well and has a good touch.

Bony however seems to be reflected reasonably accurately in the videos judging by your summaries, he does rely on a good supply, and while he does use his pace and strength, he does not use it anywhere as often as you would expect. However I'm inclined to believe he will have an excellent partnership with Michu as he is very capable of drawing defenders away and keeping them occupied. Much depends on how De Guzman Hernandez, Dyer et al behave.

Great work again - keep it up!

        No problem, was a pleasure!

The only thing I didn't seem to see from Ginkel was a solid dribbling ability. He seemed to rely on his pace a fair bit. He does however seem to be able to pull out a quality pass or shot even when under pressure.

I personally think Bony & Michu will rip it up together. I think Michu could still get around 15 goals due to Bony teeing him up with nice link up passes or making runs for Michu to sneak in behind and score.

That won't happen though - with the fee that's being bandied around Levy would have to spend otherwise he'd get lynched!

I think they'll get Soldado regardless of Bale's situation. If so, he'll be in my team

Yes, if Soldado signs I'll probably bring him in instead depending on price.

    How's my attack looking?

    Mignolet
    Kosc Dawson Shaw
    Hazard Coutinho Mirallas Silva
    Aguero Lukaku Bony

    1mil £ banked

(Before you get alllll "he's not proven"...Bony is my GW1 flair punt...seeing as Lukaku isn't really much of a risk, as most will have him.)

Would probably go Mert over Kosc. Also Silva and Aguero could be risky until we know the City line up.

*looks from the side, with an evil smile looking at all these RMT's without RVP*

    Bale speculation.

*Shit, now everybody will get him*

    More RMT's

*Yes, yes, kindly ignore him, Muahahhaahahahha*

I'd imagine most have 3 drafts set up.
      A Bale one
      A RVP one
A neither of the above one.
      I do, anyway!

That doesn't include my draft though. The one with with both.

I had a great 'Both' one until the DGW was announced. I am struggling to fit 3 Chelsea, RVP and Bale though because I have to cut other players that I am really interested in (Theo, Nolan).

Take out baker, your strikers look a bit weak and I must admit I dont know where the money has been spent with a front three like that

I know they look a bit cheap on paper, but certainly not weak :p Bale, Walcott and Hazard are pretty expensive..

    Is this team a 9 out of 10 or a 10 out of 10?

    Mignolet - Davis
    Luiz - Coleman - Turner - Collins - Turner
    Bale - Hazard - Walcott - Mirallas - Quinn
    Sturridge - Lukaku - Rodriguez

SSN - Real table world record bid for Bale. So looks like he's off then.

Presume this is old news but I've just turned my telly on 🙂
