The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Monday

Romelu Lukaku flexes his substantial Fantasy football muscles to wreck the Newcastle defence and leave us re-assessing our forward lines yet again. Meanwhile, the withdrawal of Hatem Ben Arfa and a transformed second-half showing from Newcastle has his owners hovering over the panic button.

The Game Changer

Lukaku simply ran riot in the first half with the Newcastle back four unable to cope with his pace and power. Having transformed and won the game at Upton Park from the bench, this evening, the Belgian dismantled the Magpies with a brace and an assist that put the game out of reach.

We shouldn’t be surprised by Lukaku’s impact. We saw last season that, when he is given pitch time, he can deliver, with 17 goals from just 20 league starts at West Brom. Jose Mourinho may feel that his game is not refined enough for the Chelsea squad but Lukaku has nonetheless proved to be hugely effective on the Premier League stage.

Fantasy managers now have to carefully consider their front lines. Lukaku at 7.6 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) will clearly represent outstanding value if he can replicate the strike rate shown at the Hawthorns. On tonight’s evidence, there’s every chance he can achieve that and more, putting further pressure on the three slots in our squad.

The Underused

It seems almost folly to discuss yet another option up front but we shouldn’t ignore Loic Remy’s late goal which left the Goodison nerves jangling. Three goals in three starts underline the Frenchman’s impact that, while less explosive than Lukaku’s at Everton, has been no less effective.

Available in the same FPL price bracket, Remy’s performance will likely be overlooked but, having been shifted to a central role in place of Papiss Cisse tonight, it’s clear that Remy will, quite literally, be central to their aspirations this season.

The Selection Poser

Hatem Ben Arfa’s withdrawal at half-time took everyone by surprise and yet, minutes later, his replacement Yohan Cabaye, scored from range to hand the Magpies an unlikely lifeline. Despite attempting to focus play through Ben Arfa in the first half, Alan Pardew took the decision to replace him with the more combative Cabaye for the second period and the change appeared to pep up the visitors as they came close to an unlikely comeback.

The reason behind the change is uncertain. Certainly Alan Pardew gave no indication of an injury in his post-match comments, leaving Ben Arfa’s owners frustrated at the curtailed pitch time and somewhat anxious that the mercurial winger may have fallen out of favour ahead of the Gameweek 7 trip to Cardiff. We await further noises from St James’ Park.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Thinking of getting rid of Rooney over Giroud for Suarez

    Giorud:
    Main Striker, nailed on
    Fixtures
    Plays in a more creative team
    Not as good a player as Rooney
    No set pieces

    Rooney:
    Slightly less nailed on
    No goals from open play
    Fixtures
    Best United cover atm
    On Free kicks

    3rd striker is Lukaku

    Who would you get rid of?

    Current midfield

    Brady, Michu, Ramsey, Barfa, JWP

    If I sell Barfa this week I'll have to sell Ramsey or JWP when Theo comes back and selling Rambo seems like madness atm, but selling JWP would create a benching dilemma as I'd have to roate Brady and whoever I get in. Worth just holding Barfa 1 more week then getting Theo in for him?

    Can shift Ramsey later for Whittingham if the returns start to dry up

    Intriguing... just listening to the discussion on SKY with regard to Liverpool's formation...They are now playing 3-5-2 in Glen Johnson's absence...and to some effect...What are the chances that they remain at 3-5-2 when Johnson returns and play him OOP in midfield as Enrique is doing on the other side...(Johnson now at 5.8 and would be steal)..or will they return to a back four ?

        Do you think so...I have a stats table made up of defensive mistakes (inspired by ITMT's explosion iminent, mines called implosion imminenet)...duels lost/bad clearances and such like...Liverpool have been terrible on it since Johnson was injured so i suspect you may be right...they've been getting away with murder...

          As a Liverpool fan I would love to see 3 CBs with Enrique and Johnson playing wing back, but I don't think it will work that well. When it was Enrique-Agger-Toure-Johnson it was all fine and dandy and they got 3 CSs. Sakho has been pretty awful defensively, while Agger/Toure and even Skyrtl have played well. Basically, since BR has been tinkering around in defence we have conceded every game, compared to not conceding when we stuck to the same back 4.

      he can rise a max of .3 a week....worst case scenario, he rises by .9 before GW8 but I highlyyyyy doubt that

          Yes, the 0.3 max is per GW, If he has enough more transfers after rising 3 times this GW he will rise on Sat Night as the first rise of the next GW.

      If you're getting him on Saturday night then he'll only have gone up 0.3 by then, but if you wait towards the end of that week then of course he can go up again.

    Evening all! I did Silva->Ramsey and am now considering -4pt hits. Am I mad or are these worth it?

    A) Lambert->Suarez (c) -4
    B) Lambert->Sturridge (c) -4
    C) Soldado->Suarez (c) -4
    D) Soldado->Sturridge (c) -4
    E) Chester->Walker -4
    F) Lambert-> Lukaku -4
    G) Soldado->Lukaku -4

    Current team:
    Mignolet (Boruc)
    Ivanovic, Mertesacker, Coleman, (Chester), (M.Turner)
    Ramsey, Ben Arfa, Brady, Nolan, (Kim)
    Rooney (c), Lambert (vc), Soldado

    6.5m bank (midfield downgrades!) Planning on 1 of the above or Barfa/Nolan -->Michu next GW.

    I am amazed the amount of people who are switching Giroud to Suarez, particularly when most already have Sturridge.

    Unless he's injured or there's been a fallout, gonna have to hold HBA for one more week.
