Dugout Discussion

World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday One, Day Two

After Brazil got their tournament off to a winning start yesterday, we now have three matches to focus on this evening. The second match in Group A, between Mexico and Cameroon, gets underway at 5pm before Spain take on Holland in a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final at 8pm and Chile face Group B underdogs Australia at 11pm:

Mexico’s Oribe Peralta looks a decent differential for some ahead of the early kick-off and, whilst Spain versus Holland may have deterred many from loading up on their options for the opener, the likes of Alexis Sanchez will be backed to deliver in the late night showdown as Chile look to grab the goals before their schedule takes a turn for the worse.

Mexico Ochoa; Aguilar, Moreno, Rodriguez, Marquez, Layun; Herrera, Vazquez, Guardado; Dos Santos, Peralta.

Cameroon Itandje; Djeugoue, Chedjou, Nkoulou, Assou-Ekotto; Mbia, Enoh, Song; Choupo Moting, Eto’o, Moukandjo.

Mexico’s starting XI suggests a continuation of their 5-3-2 formation. Paul Aguilar and Miguel Layun will be handed the wing-back berths, whilst further up the field, former Tottenham man Giovanni Dos Santos is likely to be fielded in a slightly more withdrawn role behind Oribe Peralta.

Cameroon look to be setting up in a 4-3-3 formation. There are a handful of surprise selections – at the back, Cedric Djeugoue and Benoit Assout-Ekotto are selected at right-back and left-back respectively, whilst the highly-rated duo Joel Matip and Vincent Aboubakar are handed bench-warming duties.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

The captain change, yes can only select 1 player and can't change for that round. If you transfer him out, unlike the Sky game the captain dosen't change.

Brazil suffered three slide tackles from behind and none of the Croatian players received a yellow card(at least). Fred lost balance because of Lovren. It wasn't the clearest penalty ever but still...it could have been assigned.

So, I'm sure this has been well thought through by the guys in charge and it's been discussed on here at some point (well, I'm sure of the last part) but...

How do we go about setting our teams up for Round 2 in the McDonald's game? The assumption (on my part) was that we'd be able to tinker with the Round 2 line up whilst Round 1 was live a la FPL/Fox. I can't see an option to do this though, am I missing something obvious?

Whilst I'm on - any fresh revelations on the game?

It's possible to select your next week team during the current week in UFPL - otherwise you'd have to pick one starting line up and stick with it for a season!

Hmm, the trouble being that Round 2 starts before Round 1 finishes - I've a nasty feeling they won't open up the next round until it's too late. Would certainly be in keeping with the rest of the game.

Most likely Vargas on left, Sanchez on right, Valdivia false9. It is probably formally a 1 AM 2 forwards, but Valdivia just plays very high and forwards drift to flanks.

If a GK makes a "Block" a ball it's called "Save"!?

Anyway even that Croatian GK got his Save points doubled?

I imagine a save is something that ends the attack phase e.g.: a catch or a parry that goes out of play. A block is a parry with the attacking phase still in process e.g.: there's a rebound from the parry as the ball is kept in play.

Cameroon looks amazingly shite. Almost as bad as the ref. And I put money on them to win this. Only comfort is that I only put a few euros on them.

    David Luiz

"Right from the very first contact I had with Paris St-Germain, I was very happy,"

"It's a big club with a great history. It's a new step in my life and I'm impatient to play for Paris and show what I can do."

Firstly, PSG has uninterrupted 40-years top flight spell atm, longest in France, 22 titles, most of them during last about 20 years or so. They were ranked the no. 1 top club of world in mid 90's which was their heyday. They have (had) a very strong local fan base and great youth academy that has (before new owners) produced them strong local continuity.

Concerning exactly Luiz, more important thing is that PSG is very very big club in Brazil. It's one of the best known European clubs for them. They have always had it easy to get Brasilians there, at least since 90' and the time of Rai and fellows. The reason why this seems strange to you is quite simply that Brasilians are much more familiar with history of PSG than the English.

However much or little that history mattered in the transfer, I doubt money was a big reason for Luiz to move to PSG: it's not as if Chelsea is poor either.

I'd wager reasons of his personal career as football player were primary, as he had fallen out of favour in Chelsea, but would be central to PSG that aims at winning CL in few years time.

Ok. Maybe I was provoked as I took it as another piece of English ignorance, but I still think he is seriously saying "he went there for money", and it is a bit silly when there were clear sportive reasons for him to leave Chelsea and even to go precisely to PSG.
