Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening as Fantasy managers quickly turn their attentions to the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

After his midweek demolition of Sunderland, Sergio Aguero is head and shoulders above any other candidate as City prepare for the visit of Everton. Selected by 52% of voters so far, the Argentine – in spite of his superb season – has surprisingly blanked in three of his six home appearances and has managed only one double-figure haul at the Etihad to date. The Toffees roll up to Manchester in poor defensive form, though – without a clean sheet on their travels all season, Roberto Martinez’ side have conceded in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both fancied to deliver the goods away to Newcastle. Costa has delivered more yellow cards than goals on the road (five to four) and has notched just once in his last three away trips but having missed out due to suspension in midweek, he’ll be raring to go against the injury-hit Magpies. Hazard has yet to score on his travels this season – indeed, the Belgian has managed only two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season and has blanked in each of his last four appearances on the road.

Charlie Austin’s superb home form brings the QPR top scorer into consideration, with 7% of the votes cast. The budget striker has racked up four goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road and, up against a Burnley side with a single clean sheet on their travels, he’s looking for a third 10+ points haul in front of his own fans which would fire the R’s out of the drop zone.

After netting Villa’s winner at Palace on Tuesday evening, Christian Benteke is amongst the favourites for a plum home clash with Leicester. The Foxes arrive without suspended skipper Wes Morgan and look unlikely to improve a defensive record which has seen them keep out their opponents in just one of the last 10 Gameweeks.

Alexis Sanchez is also in contention as the Gunners roll up to Stoke. Unlike Chelsea’s Hazard, the Chilean has delivered on the road – four of his nine league goals have arrived outside of the Emirates, suggesting he could be a real differential against a Potters side with a single shut-out since Gameweek 3.

Reppost as typically was bottom on last page

I was playing scrabble one day and we looked up the word troiling as a potential word. We found it on the urban dictionary. 1 chocolate digestive to anybody who can tell me what it means without googling

fell too far back last season... so getting 7th in the world for that DGW only got me back to respectable instead of launching me to the top of my ML as I plot to do this season

Just wanna remind everyone worried about playing Baines; he'll be swinging crosses, corners and freekicks in to a box most likely "commanded" by the fearsome axis of Demichelles-Mangala.

I hate these kind of stats. Let's just take out your best player and then see where you are. Obvious thats why they bought them. At least this one has some point with the costa stat

I've been wondering. Anyone else remember in the summer there were suggestions Wenger saw Chambers playing at DM? Given the injuries they have there, could Debuchy's return not signal an upturn in Chambers' prospects, rather than a collapse?

Not an owner, just eyeing the potential there.

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 15 Years

Yes for sure. Chambers will play loads of games for arsenal, i could see him turning into their "john o'shea", playing RB, LB, CB, DM... anywhere they need covr basically.

I have no idea who to captain.

Tossing up between Aguero, Sanchez, Benteke and Austin.

I'm inclined towards Benteke. He is likely to do well at home against a struggling Leicester. I feel the Everton fixture will be tougher than expected for City. No doubt Aguero is always a chance for huge points, but this seems like a good opportunity to take a risk while most of the league will have Aguero captained.

    Thoughts?

    Possible:

Well, it also suffices that Anderlecht gets a point at Dortmund, if Wenger fires on all cylinders at Istanbul and wins Gala by 6 or more. That is possible, if extremely improbable.

I think this will be Chelsea's biggest test of the season tbh.

Newcastle are a decent outfit and it will be tough for them. Can see them potentially losing this one.

I totally agree don't see Chelsea winning with more than a goal up if at all. Remember Cisse's goal against them a while back. That guy is a beast. Take a look at his goals per minutes rate since hist first appearance in GW5

The Clyne tackles and Aguero 7 goals in 8 are the only relevant ones, last years games with different teams have no bearing on this season.

Except City no one has a chance to beat Chelsea. Maybe Arsenal at Emirates with their reinforced defense. CFC has just 2 much mental strength and quality this season. Mourihno has stamped himself n NUFC can best hope 4 a draw. 75% chances of CFC winning.

Yes but Hazard scored a hatty against them last season (had him captain) ... if we take this one out he has one goal in two games.

He'll play 60 minutes and score twice... good enough for me!

He can score that brace in 20 minutes, and that's already good enough for me.

Players can play 3 games a week.

He'll only be subbed if they are winning comfortably, and if they are winning comfortably, you can bet you he has a haul.

think he plays against everton but gets rested against leicester next weekend. 4 games in 10 days is to much for agueros sensitive hammys

With Dzeko out, they don't really have a replacement for Aguero.

Aguero is in tip top condition, so I have no worries.
