Team of the Season – David Silva

David Silva has always been a reliable performer on the Fantasy scene, yet before now the midfield magician lacked the end product to stand alongside his big-hitting peers. A return of 12 goals and as many assists this season put paid to that, placing him in the top four scorers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game courtesy of a career-best points haul.

The Statistics

Overshadowed by Yaya Toure’s 20-goal exploits in 2013/14, Silva began the season at a price of just 9.0, far more budget-friendly than the Ivorian’s lofty 11.0 valuation in the FPL game.

The Spaniard made a perfect start to 2014/15, netting in Manchester City’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in Gameweek 1, but one goal in City’s eight subsequent match-ups, followed by a six-match injury lay-off, served to knock 0.2 off his starting value.

From Gameweek 17 onwards, Silva returned to firm, notching four goals and one assist in a trio of starts, which triggered an upsurge of investors and a 0.6 increase on his price tag. The Sky Blues chief orchestrator then delivered consistent attacking returns (six goals and nine assists) in the second half of the season, causing his value to rise to a peak of 9.9 in Gameweek 33.

Despite charting tenth with regards to ‘transfers in’ over the course of the season, Silva ended up with the joint-fourth highest total score (191) – alongside the much-vaunted Harry Kane – among the full roster of Premier League players.

Crucially, the former Valencia star enjoyed his most productive season in the final third, notching five more goals than his previous record (seven) last term. A dozen assists now means that Silva has recorded 49 assists across the past four campaigns, highlighting the consistency of his output from year to year – indeed, he’s registered at least 12 assists from 2011/12 onwards. These figures positioned Silva as the third-highest scoring midfielder, behind Alexis Sanchez (16 goals) and Eden Hazard (14), and the joint-second assist-maker, with only Cesc Fabregas (19) managing more.

Impressively, Silva also racked up more bonus points than in previous seasons – his tally of 28 was superior to team-mate Sergio Aguero (27) and bettered by only three players. The little Spaniard’s average of six points per game was inferior only to Aguero (6.5) and Hazard (6.1), despite the fact that, unlike the other two, he didn’t have spot-kick duties to bolster his potential.

The Prospects

Silva’s new-found clinical edge is a boost to Manuel Pellegrini and Fantasy managers alike for the season ahead. Bearing in mind he scored just 21 times in the four years prior to last term, his upturn in output suggests he is set to vie with Hazard and Sanchez for our attentions in the premium midfield bracket next time around.

The fact that Sanchez is set for Copa America duties with Chile this summer – thus potentially placing question marks over his pitch time at the very start of the season – may well affect how we assemble our initial squads and could prove pivotal to Silva’s popularity at the offset.

Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to move to a lone striker system for the final couple of months has also worked in Silva’s favour. With Aguero firing on all cylinders, the Spaniard’s constant source of creativity will be key to the Etihad side as they look to recapture the title. Certainly, with team-mates Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri and James Milner unable to match his output, and Yaya Toure possibly on his way out, Silva looks the prime choice in the centre of the park for a City side that topped the scoring charts for the fourth successive campaign last time out.

Ultimately, though, Silva’s prospects hinge on his ability to steer clear of injury. Whilst the likes of Hazard and Sanchez seem made of sterner stuff, the Spaniard’s propensity for picking up hamstring niggles have tended to frustrate Fantasy managers in years gone by. Having missed just six of City’s league matches last time out, though, there’s a hope that he can finally remain out of the treatment room and step up his claim for an automatic place in our five-man midfields in the upcoming campaign.

Hopefully he'll be no more than 10m, bonus magnet though he is fond of a yellow card. Thats the beauty of Haz - doesn't get yellows so often picks up handy bonus points following Ivan/Fab/Costa bookings.

This was asked on the Scoutcast earlier this week but thought I'd open up to everyone else to answer too.

Name your must haves and one differential for next season.

Also, name the player who won’t be coming near your lineup after this season’s experience.

Must have: JT. He's been in my team for the whole of the last two seasons. No reason to change now.

Must avoid: Giroud. Was in my team twice this year - first time he got sent off (as my captain), second time he did nothing every week till end of the season.

Differential: n/a. If someone unexpected emerges early on, 20% of players have them in their teams on gw3 wildcard

    9. Captain Peacock

The must haves for me are Ivanovic, Kun and Silva. I'd put Diego Costa and Fabregas one rung below that, and Depay one rung still lower. I plan to start with all of them though.

My differential will likely be the same one I ended this season with - Marc Albrighton. To me, he was the clearest example all year of managers caring too much about price rather than performance. He had ridiculous underlying stats and regularly gave returns, but many avoided him and many who bought him left him on the bench. (Kane didn't have this problem because his rise was so meteoric and forward spots are premium).

I'm not touching Begovic no matter where he ends up after his horrific start to the year, and I'd be wary of Di Maria until I'm sure he's bedded in properly.

First post since the season end.

I just wanted to say fantastic season, and congrats to Simon. I battled it out with him at the top for the last 20 GWs, and whilst I spent them all in the top 10, could never quite catch him.

Funny to say it, but I'm a little gutted to end up 5th. I so very nearly made the right decisions in the last gameweek in order to make up the gap. Whilst I brought in Walcott, I didn't quite go the whole hog and captain him, despite being so close to committing to that decision. In addition, I also took out Cazorla instead of Ramsey for Walcott - my thinking was Cazorla had less potential to punish me than Ramsey if he did start.

Ifs, buts and maybes, and whilst I'd have been over the moon to snatch it on the last day, it would have been harsh on a guy who held onto the number one spot for 15 weeks.

All in all a great season, lessons learnt, and roll on next year to try and to the impossible and better a top 5 finish...

I reduced the number of transfers I made this year, but that comes with a big caveat; I'm not sure if this was because I'd set my team up well at the start, and with both the wildcards, so simply didn't need to use as many as previous years.

I also played it safe with captains - I can only recall a handful of gameweeks where I got the captain decision majorly wrong, so this was a massive factor too.

Finally, I think I paid a lot more attention to my defence this year, but again this comes with a caveat, as players such as Kane allowed more budget to be splashed at the back.

Also was on all the form players at the right time: Pelle, Austin and Kane especially.

The one exception was Benteke. I owned him for the first two games of Sherwood's reign (2, 2) before transferring out as I wrongly conceded it was an error. He then went on to explode, so I got him back in for the last 3 games (2, 6, 2).

I think if I'd have been on Benteke the right time too, I maybe would have won it.

What happened with Benteke, I can't remember? It was something that made it a logical move that quite a few players did it on the same week...including me.

Nobody was touching him when Sherwood came it, but I took the gamble. I then waited it out for 2 weeks, where he blanked on both (Sherwood's first 2 games). I thought I'd made a massive error, and tried to rectify it by getting him out.

He then went on a run, then also had a DGW which some people jumped on because he'd started scoring. I should have followed suit, but by that time had Giroud who had started doing well.

Bit of both to be honest. When you start hitting the top 10, it does become a massive stress (e.g. to not make any errors), but I won't lie and say I haven't enjoyed it!

At last, some footy today. If Wally starts ahead of Giroud then it's a really strong marker for next season...Come on Wallly !!

I hope not, Giroud must be one of the most harshly treated players by fans. Quality player and works so well for the team allowing the midfielders to find space.

Would be a major shame if he didn't play today as he has played a massive part in this season.

Tbh I don't think he will. Wenger strikes me as being a bit more loyal than that. Giroud was this years striker and one of the reasons that are in the final, it would be too harsh on Wenger's part to drop him.

If Villa win then they keep Southampton out of the Europa League and force Liverpool to start in the 3rd qualifying round instead of the Group Stage.

Anyone watching Sydney FC vs. Spurs? Good game so far. Spurs playing almost a full strength side.

Yedlin looks good at RB, if he can nail down a spot and if cheap could be a decent differential

One change I'd like to see in FPL, is allowing entrance in more leagues.

    15 isn't enough.

It might seem a lot, but I've been playing since it started and have cemented myself in many leagues over that time. I need more space.

    She wore a yellow ribbon,
In the merry month of May!
    And when, I asked,
Oh why she wore her ribbon,
She said it’s for The Arsenal,
    And we’re going to Wembley!
    Wembahleeee,
    Wembahleeee,
    We’re the famous Arsenal,
    And we’re going to Wembley!

The fist FA cup final I remember was that Ricky Villa goal Vs City. The finals in the 80s were amazing.

    Utd Vs Brighton
    Whiteside winner Vs Everton.
    2 merseyside finals.
    Coventry beating Spurs.
    Wimbledon beating Liverpool 🙁
