Scout Report – Jose Holebas

On July 2, Watford announced the signing of left-back Jose Holebas on a three year-deal from Roma. The Greek defender – who started 23 matches for i Giallorossi last term as they finished second in the Serie A – became the fourth new recruit at Vicarage Road this summer, following the capture of centre-back Sebastian Prodl, keeper Giedrius Arlauskis and forward Matej Vydra.

When the move was announced, it seemed that Holebas – as explained in an interview with the Italian press – was caught unaware after both clubs went public with the deal without his knowledge:

“They arranged my transfer without asking me. I haven’t signed anything yet, I have to see the contract first. I don’t know why this has happened, I know that both Roma and Watford announced my transfer, but they’d have to talk to my representatives first. I never said I wanted to leave Roma. I’ll sign after first agreeing to the terms of the contract. I can’t understand what’s happened, I came back from my holiday in Dubai, and everyone started telling me my transfer had been officially announced. I’m in Germany right now, how could I sign a contract?”

The History

After learning his trade at four local non-professional youth teams, the Germany-born Holebas teamed up with sixth division side Viktoria Kahl. Operating as striker, Holebas netted 15 goals in 33 outings, prompting a move to second division side 1860 Munich prior to the start of the 2006/7 campaign.

Holebas made his breakthrough into the senior side the following term, producing two goals and three assists across 19 appearances. At this point, the Greece international was still being deployed as a forward (either on the left flank or in a central berth) and this would continue until manager Ewald Linen shifted him to left wing-back at the start of the 2009/10 campaign. In all, Holebas amassed seven goals and eight assists in 74 league outings for 1860 Munich.

Holebas then followed Lienen to Olympiakos in the summer of 2010. Despite flattering to deceive in the first half of the season, the versatile wide man established himself as a regular starter and went on to tally one goal and an assist in 24 appearances. Over the course of his four-season spell with The Legend, Holebas chalked up nine goals and 17 assists, with his attacking output in the 2012/13 campaign (four goals and eight assists) sticking out as a highlight.

Roma snapped Holebas up on a three-year deal in August 2014, placing him in direct competition with ex-Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole. Ultimately, Holebas came out on top in this contest, earning 23 starts (one goal and assist) to Cole’s 11.

By way of being born in Germany and possessing a Greek-Uruguayan heritage, Holebas was eligible to play for all three nations but chose to represent Greece on the international stage. He featured in all of Greece’s match-ups in the 2014 World Cup and to date has recorded one goal and three assists in 27 appearances.

The Prospects

Holebas has yet to start in Watford’s two pre-season matches so far, which have seen new boss Quique Sanchez Flores roll out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Ikechi Anya fielded at left-back. The Greek international was afforded 15 minutes off the bench in the weekend draw with Wimbledon and is expected to nail down a regular role once he improves his match sharpness.

Looking at his attacking numbers from last season, Holebas produced a total of 19 attempts on goal and 19 key passes in Serie A – an average of 108.1 minutes for both. Compared to Premier League defenders with 1000+ minutes in 2014/15, that places him ninth (Danny Rose was eighth) for shots and sixteenth (Aaron Cresswell was fifteenth) for key passes.

Like the rest of the Hornets’ likely defensive starters, Holebas comes in at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. A change in the BPS scoring, which is expected to favour central defenders, may persuade some to consider new boy Sebastian Prodl or Gabriele Angell instead, though. The six foot six inches-tall Prodl netted three times in 19 starts in the previous Bundesliga campaign – consequently averaging a goal at a greater frequency (every 581 minutes) than all Premier League defenders bar Chris Smalling (every 495 minutes) last term. Angell, who’s recorded nine goals (including two braces) and seven assists in his two seasons with the Hornets, fashioned the most shots (24) of any Watford defender last time out. Meanwhile, first choice right-back, Juan Carlos Paredes, chalked up four assists, yet his limited goal threat somewhat tempers our appeal.

Elsewhere at the back, the Hertfordshire club’s recruitment of Steaua Bucharest shot-stopper Giedrius Arlauskis places uncertainty over Heurelho Gomes’ starting berth for the season ahead. Watford conceded the fifth lowest number of goals (50) last season – though given they managed just 15 clean sheets (eight at home) – whoever wins the number one jersey may have to rely on save points to boost their Fantasy potential.

Watford embark on a fairly difficult start to the new campaign which may ultimately deter initial investors. Trips to Everton and United in the first five, allied with visits from West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, suggest it’s perhaps best to hold fire with our plans until the schedule takes a turn for the better around Gameweek 6.

Nonetheless, Flores’ side do rotate home and away with Bournemouth over the 38 Gameweeks and with a decent run (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) over the opening eight rounds of fixtures, they could appeal to those looking for a 9.0 defensive pairing in their five-man backlines.

Looking good for a team with 1.5itb. I think you should get a 2nd keeper in case Foster comes back early (you don't wanna waste tranfers on goalies). Otherwise, I like this team (and no, it's not identical to mine)

I would think Hendo. Just a gut feeling. The shackles will be off as he will no longer have to act as Stevie's legs. If improvements are made form the whole squad I'd expect Hendo to step up his game and be immense value FPL-wise.

As a lifelong Liverpool fan, I think you're largely correct, but its hard to tell. Milner will play centrally - a key reason for him signing with us. Back 4 looks spot on, 3 options from there:

      Diamond:

      Can
      Hendo Milner
      Coutinho
      Firmino Ings/Origi

      4-2-3-1:

      Hendo Milner
      Lallana Cout Firmino
      Ings/Origi

      4-3-3:

      Can
      Hendo Milner
      Cout Ings/Origi Firmino

Will be interesting to see how Cout/Firmino/Lallana/Ibe/Markovic fill up the attacking spots behind the striker - a pecking order will develop. Only Cout a nailed on starter out of those I think

Something to consider is Ilori was given some guarantees (I'm not sure what, realistically the CB pairing should be Ilori - Sakho as we play a high line) so that situation is one to watch but Brenda prefers Skrtel to everyone else regardless so don't be hopeful on that.

      2. Licky

They'll be similar players for us - both CMs, boudless energy, powerful running both forward and tracking back, set pieces probably shared between the two (with Cout perhaps), so its close. Hendo is #1 on pens and captain i.e. guarateed start, so I'd go Hendo (and as it happens, I have him in my team)

    a) The best rotation option (Sakho)
    b) the cheaper option (Coates)

Not much talk here about the 5.0 GKs... just wondering why? Liking the look of Fab with good fixtures after gw1, settled unit and good cs potential especially at home. Combining with Butland looks decent too

    1. rattan64
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 4 months ago

I think Williams at 5m is a better coverage for Swans decent fixtures post GW1, plus he's a CBI beast which is ideal with the new BPS.

I think there are enough 4.5m GKs with good rotations which may be putting people off 5m GKs. Ruddy/Butland is my choice

      1. KIM SO RONERY
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 4 months ago

^ Cheers for that. I've got my eye on Williams already but with the all the other 4.5+4.5 GK rotations, I think there's too much risk there with newly promoted teams or new manager (LEI,NEW). Whereas for 0.5 more you get a proven keeper with good fixtures...

Any other 5+4.5 rotations to think about?

Looks v good in my opinion! Only looks light in midfield as you have 2 big guns in Haz and Silva - maybe downgrade one for Fab/Yaya and upgrade one of the other 3 by 2m or so?

Firmino isn't a Striker. What we really need is someone like Higuain, someone that isn't going to stunt the development of the younger players, while providing an ample cover option as our main Striker while Sturridge is out or to play alongside him. Tekkers would be a woeful signing to me personally but that's what the club want it would seem.

I rate the player to a degree, I wouldn't rate the signing though, partly down to Benteke's desire to play in a system that suits him (which isn't ours) and partly due to his injuries and potentially an attitude that's been brought up in the past, all this combined with the fee would mean a signing with many ifs and buts, and it could well end badly, at the very best I don't see it ending in value anyway.

both Sturridge and Suarez had attitude issues as did Sterling, Mario too. Maybe Rodgers likes the challenging behaviour. Joking aside though, Benteke when in the mood is a real handfull and when given decent service scores well, ie end of last season when Sherwood changed things around. He will get service at Pool and could be great. Systems change and adapt to accomodate players and opposition, it what Rogers likes doing.

We don't have the personnel to adopt such a system, it would be pointless and if anything a step back, we are not a counter attacking team, a long ball team or a crossing team, we pass the ball on the floor, that is how we've always been. What is not another 'option', its a player who'll will play and work hard as part of the team, who will not be the focal point, someone who's movement will make space, who's positioning is on point and someone who isn't lazy and wants the ball to them early every time so they can go directly to challenge the CBs.

i love how you are so sure about this. What about Belgium? Are they a counter attacking team. Do you honestly think if what you say is true Rogers would be buying him when there are plenty of other options he could go for, nonsense im afraid. Anyway bed calls. later

Night GD. 😉 My last point would just be that there are no other option (for me that should mean we don't spend or rather waste money on anyone). Belgium haven't done exceedingly well with Tekkers, Origi was up top during the WC I think? It's no sign of quality anyway, its not on club level. Just look to Rickie Lambert, Lambo has so much more to him than being a 'big man' he's a player that actually wants to play football properly, who is happy to make runs, pass the ball about in the build up and bring others into play and Rodgers still managed to misuse him, Tekkers will be worse than that I'm afraid.

Issue is I think he'd need time to adapt to the PL after Serie A for so long. That would be a problem at this pricetag in my opinion.

Would be better off trying a very big bid for Lacazette, will need to adjust as well but he's younger and could give a lot to the team.

Still, get ready for Tekkers 😉

I think you're misinterpreting what I mean by cover, Sturridge would no doubt be the main man, but Higuain would be the de facto first choice, the strike partner, or in the rare case the option off the bench, his role would be massive, but only for a short time, which is all Liverpool need to cover. 😉

No Valdes, Rafael, Varela, James, Powell, Van Persie, Hernandez (possibly because of injury) in the Tour squad so they are all off I guess.

Evans is in so looks like he is staying and we will sign just the 1 CB.

No Rojo or Di Maria due to Copa America.

Bit of a long shot...and two unknowns.
I'm curremtly on Henderson/Milner and Ritchie as third and fourth mids....but what if i changed the Liverpool spot for Payet...That would leave an eight match run of at least one easy fixture per week and often two....Is that madness?

Well they both are....or at least unproven. The initial set of fixture give the best home games to a combination of West Ham Bournemouth and Liverpool...so it's just a matter of unlocking the right combination of players to take advantage. Sakho, Wilson, Ritchie, Henderson Payet, Milner and whoever plays CF for Liverpool....I don't much like unproven players but i also don't like passing up great home fixtures for mid priced players either.

are you playing both of them?

if so I'm on something similar but with Sakho over Payet, and Wanyama to cover as Saints are the best rotation option with a 4.5 mid available

Yes...but also the saving of 1.0 on Payet from the 8.5 mids allows another player to be brought into the equation other than Wanyama maybe...for example....Look at Payet Henderson and Ritchies home games...yummy...

oh I've see but with Ivan, Costa and Rooney in the team I have opted for Sakho as my 3rd forward, even if I swapped Mata down to say Henderson I'd still have to try and squeeze more out my 5th mid slot. I'm assuming you plan on playing all 3 every week?

Had the exact same thoughts. I really want to get Payet in too and the rotation is perfect. Great fixtures and both have dead ball duties.

Head's ruling heart at this point and saying run with the herd to start with. But great way to get a jump on the competition so still undecided...
