Last week, West Ham made Argentinian midfielder Manuel Lanzini their seventh summer signing, with the 22-year-old joining on a season-long loan from UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al-Jazira, with an option to make the move permanent.

New Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was glowing in his praise of Lanzini, nicknamed “The Jewelâ€, and likened the new acquisition to a certain Man City playmaker:

“I watched him two years ago and I wanted to take him to Besiktas, but it was difficult. Now, the chance has come to get him, he’s going to help us a lot as he will add even more creativity in the crucial parts of the pitch. At the age of 20, he was given the No 10 jersey at River Plate who, with Boca Juniors, are a massive club of course. He’s not very strong but he rides challenges, he doesn’t go down – so I hope he could be big for us. There are deep playmakers like [Andrea] Pirlo or [Luka] Modric or you have playmakers between the lines up front like Silva. He’s more like him but he can play in all positions behind the strikers.”

THE HISTORY

Having come through the youth system at River Plate, Lanzini made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 win over Tigre in August 2010. He made 22 appearances for Los Millonarios during the 2010/11 season, although he failed to find the back of the net. Lanzini then spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Brazilian side Fluminese, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, and helped them win the Carioca in 2012.

Upon his return to River Plate ahead of the 2012/13 season, Lanzini was handed the coveted number ten shirt, worn by the likes of Ariel Ortega, and went on to provide eight goals and two assists in 26 league appearances before stepping up his creativity the following year, delivering five goals and nine assists from 41 outings in all competitions.

In 2014, Lanzini joined Al-Jazira, and scored eight goals in 24 league appearances alongside former Juventus and Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, helping secure a second-place finish in the league.

Lanzini has also been capped four times for Argentina at under-20 level, but has yet to earn a call-up to the senior side.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Bilic has opted for 4-4-2 on occasion during the summer, the Hammers are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 for the season ahead. The Croatian primarily employed that formation during his time at Besiktas and rolled out such a system for last weekend’s trip to Charlton.

This would certainly enhance Lanzini’s prospects of finding a place in West Ham’s starting XI, with the young Argentine taking up one of the places alongside fellow new signing Dimitri Payet in the three attacking midfield slots behind a lone striker. This would see the likes of Enner Valencia, Matt Jarvis, Morgan Amalfitano and Mauro Zarate battle it out for the final berth, with Diafra Sakho looking favourite to lead the line.

In terms of match sharpness, though, the new boy has conceded he’s a little behind his team-mates, which indicates he may be eased into life in the top flight until his fitness is up to speed for the demands of the Premier League:

“First of all, I want to settle here, this is a very difficult and competitive league. It’s then about being at the same level as my teammates and getting into the starting XI as quickly as I can. I have already spoken with the manager. I told him I was looking forward to starting training, to getting fit and getting up to speed with my colleagues.”

Certainly, once he’s fully fit, Lanzini – at a price of just 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), could warrant some consideration should he live up to Bilic’s expectations and establish himself as a first-team regular at Upton Park. At this point, though, Payet (7.5) and Sakho (6.5) look the strongest options right now, with the former – who created more scoring opportunities than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues last term – also handed dead-ball duties by Bilic.

Judging by his manager’s comments, Lanzini is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s and the Hammers’ new coach Julian Dicks has also been suitably impressed by what he’s seen in training.

Whilst the Hammers’ first three away matches (ars, liv, mci) are hardly enticing, their first four fixtures at Upton Park pit them against Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Norwich in the opening seven Gameweeks, suggesting Bilic’s side may well deserve our Fantasy attention. For now, Lanzini looks one to monitor but once he’s up to speed, the Argentine may well emerge as one of the strongest options in the budget midfield bracket.

So this is how it stands at present. I think I will have a non playing 4 million keeper at the start of the season at least unfortunately.

---Butworld - Hennessey or some other 4 million keeper---
    ---------Mertesacker - Cedric - Lescott - Mings - Prodl--------
    ----------------Sterling - Walcott - Depay - Mane-----------------
    ---------------------Rooney - Sakho - Costa------------------------

    What do you think?

Morning! Please pick one thanks 🙂

    A) O'Shea, Mane, Costa, Deeney

    B) Bellerin/Kolarov, Sterling, Pelle, Sakho

    Current team:

    Schmeich/Butland
Ivan, O'Shea, (Francis, Jenko rotation), Targett
    Fabregas, Walcott, Ozil, Mane, Fletcher
    Costa, Rooney, Deeney

My team is looking pretty good in my opinion but interested to hear some criticism on it, want it to be good come the start of the season

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Clyne - Azpi - Cedric - Huth - Targett
    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Ritchie - Johnson(Norwich)
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

What are peoples opinions of my team? Very happy with Sakho, Ritchie and Johnson for rotation, will get me some points in favorable fixtures. Not happy with Targett but I am strapped for cash after the addition of Rooney who I am still unsure of. Benteke is another risk due to new style of play and Sterling may be changed to Walcott at least till City's fixtures are better. Any criticism is welcome, thank you for any help!

Goalies - Good (Poss Ruddy instead of Schmeic but good ntl)
Def - Pretty good, if only you could get 0.5 for targett)
Mid - Strong , good rotation with cheap mids
Striker - Strong - Rooney yep, Sakho is mine so sick 😛 and Benteke is a risk but i think he will be good

      8/10

95% of the time you can get away with a non playing defender is the 5pts you get over the season for him worth an extra half mil. Don't know why teams give it too much thought. Targett will get a couple of games. I think Saylor, if fit will get 50% gametime.

What do people reckon about Arsenal's mid conundrum in terms of nailed oness? Excluding Coquelin.

    I think:

    1. Sanchez
    2. Ozil
    3. Ramsey
    4. Cazorla
    5. Wilshere
    6. Ox

Plan is to rotate Mings and Jenkinson for the first 6-8 weeks and will most likely play Deeney every week from GW2 onwards in place of Huth

All opinions and thoughts are welcome...

    Rooney Benteke

They normally appear a little into the season.

And FPL are definitely getting better at labelling players despite the still present inconsistency with wide players (e.g Rodriguez as a forward but Mane as a mid).

    Hello everyone!

Mignolet - Schmeichel ( Rotation is good, LFC have good home fixture list until GW 7 and Mignolet manage 14 CS last campaign)

Azpi - Cedric - Moreno/Sakho - O'shea - 4.0 ( Need to be in the CFC defence. Soton have good fixtures and a good football team. Moreno/Sakho cheapest way into LFC defense, home fixtures are good and trying to get double CS with Mignolet. S'land have ok fixture list, but need to keep an eye on who will start.

    Hazard - Walcott - Depay - Mane - Anya

Rooney - Benteke - Wilson ( Wilson decent budget player - Bournemouth will play attacking football and have good fixture list)

I will probably do 2 FT after GW2. Downgrading Hazard to Fabregas and upgrading Rooney to Aguero.

    Please, any comments..

You do not want to be downgrading Hazard - downgrade Depay / Mane / Walcott to whoever is the hot 6.5 mid to fund Aguero.

hart eventhough nice price for 'premium' might not be better pointswise than highsaving fabianski/panti/mignolet/myhill. and 0.5 for merte --> kosc is an upgrade worth making. dont know about moreno, prefer cedric/williams for 5.0. dont waste arse spot on coquelin, you'll never play him anyway. barry also 4.5 and most likely you dont need 3 everton players. all in all, quite good!

Think you probably need to decide fundamentally if you're going with or without Hazard first before anything else.

this is the team that I am most happy with. Includes Hazard who is Chelsea's pen taker and pretty much guaranteed to be up there top scorer.

I have Soton, Spurs and Arsenal attack which I think is important, with a route to Aguero when ever I want.

I think having Milner in the side will be the best thing for Benteke. Greatly improves his appeal imo

Yeah, it's good. In my opinion I'd downgrade Ivanovic to Azpilicueta and spend the money elsewhere. But I guess your pretty set on having Ivanovic.

I have tried this, plenty of times.
But every time I come to upgrade, there's no one who I am totally happy with. Keepers don't phase me to spend too much on, and Ritchie, for some crazy reason, is appealing more to me then Milner/Hendo

I like it. Would personally go for Azpi + Chadli instead of Ivan + Ritchie.

Milner is an option, too. Just not convinced by Ritchie, although I've never seen him play, mind.

The points he got last season ( bad for 9 m ), were when the whole team was built to make him score goals as a striker. I think he will be played at right wing at man city and would tally even fewer goals ( possibly some extra assists ) .
Fabregas and mata ( if nailed ) , even ozil are far better options at a similar price.
In FPL you need to choose the main attacking threats from teams and I don' t think sterling will be one at city.

Front 8 is very similar to mine, but your defense is stronger, so i like it. Might want a playing backup keeper (funded by Walcott to 8.5 Arsenal mid?) but otherwise looks sharp.

Please help me out guys! Having so much trouble deciding on this.

    A) Speroni - Butland
Azpi - Kosc - CÉDRIC - (Francis, Prödl)

    Roo - BENTEKE - Sakho

    B) Speroni - Butland
Azpi - Kosc - (BASSONG, Francis, Prödl)
    Hazard - HENDO - Özil - Wanya - Ritchie

So here it is, the team that I really do feel I might be settled on for the start of the season.

    Lost on last page...

Plan is to rotate Mings and Jenkinson for the first 6-8 weeks and will most likely play Deeney every week from GW2 onwards in place of Huth

All opinions and thoughts are welcome...

    Cech
    Ivan Clyne Huth Mings
    Hazard Walcott Ozil Ritchie
    Rooney Benteke

    4.0 GK, Deeney Jenkinson Wanyama

The 4.5s are not finalised just want your thoughts on which is more important. Ivan + Kos or more money on bench warmers?

    a) Azpil, Kos, Cedric, Mings/Francis and Bassong (the 2 x 4.5m def, will almost never be played)

    b) Ivan, Mert, Mings/Francis, Bassong and Angella (3 way 4.5m rotation for fixtures)

    c) Ivan, Kos, Mings/Francis, Bassong and Pudil (2 way 4.5m rotation + 4m def never to be played)

actually azpi had better points per minutes last season than ivan so if he's nailed on might be worth saving 1.0. kosc on the other hand is much better than any other (arse) def. so, A

hmmm, first impression is, don't name 5 subs!

I like the midfield, but wonder whether the lack of Man City players may haunt you. Why not spread your coverage and bump Cazorla or Ozil up to Sterling and downgrade Azpi or Sakho?

So, talking about the Villa lineup, how does one expect it to look like?

    -----------------------------------Guzan
    --Bacuna----Richards--------------------Okore------Amavi
    -----Gueye----------------Sanchez------------Westwood
    --N'Zogbia/Sinclair-------Ayew-------------------Grealish

... I know they were terrible last season, and have lost their entire core (Vlaar, Delph, Benteke), but looking at the schedule, Villa’s opening schedule is very favourable, with the home clash against Man United in Gameweek 2 the only difficult fixture in the first six weeks of the season (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA).

A defender, Gueye or Ayew anyone?

I could be wrong but I seem to remember that Okore was pretty decent on the BAP front last season.

But I wouldn't trust them defensively under Sherwood, and the attack without Tekkers has to be a wait-and-see.

I suspect it will be Hutton at RB, unless they buy a new one. Richards alongside Clark, as Okore's currently injured. Bacuna to be mainly used further forward

Would be tempted by Adebayor if he moves

Carles Gil has been quoted (by Sherwood) as having a major role to play this season - probably in the No. 10 role. Tim didn't see him as a relegation battler, so didn't play him towards the end of last season. When I did see him play last season he looked fantastic - very skillful, good eye for goal and I remember him nutmegging Oscar to set up a goal. I'm watching him for a possible 5th mid spot (only 5m) but he got injured in the last pre-season friendly. However that was described as a knock on the Villa website, so hopefully back soon.

Bacuna has played all pre-season friendlies at right midfield, and Hutton has played at RB. If Bacuna continues to play as a mid and sets up goals for Ayew etc, then he's worth monitoring as an OOP.

OK, this is my team. I think. I had Sakho over Wilson but that meant two 4.5 defenders, which is just too risky.

    Azpi/Lescott/Williams/Francis/Targett

    Wally/Sterling/Mane/Fab/Anya

    Costa/Rooney/Wilson

    Azpi - Cedric - Bassong - (O'Shea) - (Simpson)

    Fab - Hendo - Chadli - Ramsey - Depay

Targett it will be just for few games

    What do you think?

I'm guessing that English isn't your first language, are you asking if it makes sense to have a 4m defender?

Targett offers a chance to get 1, maybe 2 games out of him and possibly a small price rise if he does well but largely no, if you're planning on rotating 5 defenders having a 4mil player doesn't make any sense

      1. The Kraken
        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

You are right, I'm Spanish, but you got right what I meant, I'm planning to rotate the 5 defenders and I was wondering if it could make any sense to have one of them 4m, wondering if one of the 4m available will be nailed on.

Seems like no one will be, so I might get Targett and get those two games. Maybe by then I will get another idea to short out my defense.

        Thanks a lot!
