Scout Report – Jordan Ayew

Earlier in the week, Jordan Ayew became the third player to arrive at Aston Villa from Ligue 1 this summer as Tim Sherwood continues to assemble his new-look side. The Ghanaian signs on in a five-deal deal for a reported fee of £8.5m, as Sherwood splashes the cash following the departure of Christian Benteke to Liverpool.

Speaking to the club website, the 23-year-old admitted that Sherwood needed little time to convince him of making the move to the midlands:

“When I spoke to the coach I knew this was the place for me. I didn’t think twice. I knew he was the right coach for me. He has so much enthusiasm and determination for the game of football. It took 10 seconds to work out he was the right coach for me and Aston Villa was the right team for me.”

THE HISTORY

Son of African legend Abedi Pelle (and brother of Swansea’s Andre), Ayew joined fourth-tier Lyon-Duchère’s youth academy at the age of nine and left six years later for the Marseille set-up. His first professional appearance came in December 2009 as a substitute against FC Lorient in which he scored the equaliser of a 2-1 victory.

The Ghanaian went on to feature 147 times for “Les Olympiens”, including 21 Champions League appearances, and managed 22 goals and 16 assists in his time there. However, he never managed to cement a starting role and was often introduced into matches from the bench.

During the opening of the 2013-14 campaign, Ayew only notched once in 16 appearances and was consequently loaned out to FC Sochaux in January 2014 to rediscover his goal scoring touch. This deal worked well for the forward and, after a slow start, he produced five goals and two assists in his final ten outings.

After completing his loan, Ayew decided to move to pastures new in July 2014 and signed for FC Lorient in a deal worth €4 million. This proved to be the making of his career as he went on to produce 12 goals and five assists in 31 league appearances – his best ever goals per game ratio.

To date, Ayew has turned out 28 times for the Ghana national side. He broke into the first team ahead of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations and started all fixtures in that competition, in which Ghana finished fourth. The striker made only one start during the 2014 World Cup as his country failed to get out of the group stages. The pinnacle of Ayew’s international career came this year, when he picked up an African Cup of Nations runners-up medal after losing to the Ivory Coast on penalties in the final.

THE PROSPECTS

The departure of Benteke has left a gaping hole up top in the Aston Villa line-up and Ayew is expected to immediately nail down a starting berth in the season ahead. Certainly, the versatile Ghana international is no like-for-like replacement for Benteke, though; his pace and movement offer options on both flanks, though he could tuck in centrally behind a more robust striker.

Although the five-foot-11-inches Ayew could also be fielded up top, he’s far less suited to a lone forward role. Given that the new boy lacks the physicality to lead the line on his own, it’s perhaps no surprise to see Sherwood linked with a move for Emmanuel Adebayor as the club’s new target man.

To an extent, much depends on Sherwood’s tactical approach for the season ahead. The Villa boss has rolled out 4-3-3-, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 formations over the summer, with Libor Kozak also staking a claim for inclusion with three goals to his name so far. A lone striker system could well see Ayew moved onto the flank, leaving the likes of Jack Grealish, Scott Sinclair, Charles N’Zogbia and Gabby Agbonlahor to battle it out for the other wing berth.

It’s worth noting, though, that Ayew excelled at Lorient as part of a two-man frontline last year and offers far greater threat through the middle. The Ghanaian managed 48 of his 81 shots on target last term – a highly impressive shot accuracy of 59% was higher than any regular forward in the top-flight.

Furthermore, his pace and tight dribbling often draws fouls which could see him pick up assists for any penalties/free-kicks that Villa convert. On the downside, though, Ayew has picked up 33 yellow and three red cards during his professional career and will need to curb his temperament in the Premier League.

Ultimately, Sherwood’s rebuilding work will be key to how we assess his side. Only Sunderland (304) created less goal-scoring chances than Aston Villa’s 306 last season and the departures of Fabian Delph, Tom Cleverley and Benteke, who contributed a combined 96 of those, will be detrimental.

Priced at just 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Ayew has a favourable opening six Gameweeks (bou, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA) that could see him stake a claim for inclusion in Fantasy managers’ plans – all the more so if he can grab spot-kick duties as a result of Benteke’s departure. As we saw last season, Sherwood’s sides will certainly go on the offensive and, providing he can cement a spot through the centre, Ayew may well emerge as a decent value option for our three-man frontlines.

Guys please RMT, I can't decide between:

    A -

    Myhill/Hennessy
    Ivanovic/Yoshida/Azpillicueta/Pudil/Saylor
    Hazard/Walcott/Mane/Henderson/Wanyama
    Kane/Rooney/C.Wilson

    or

    B -

    Myhill/Hennessy
    Richards/Yoshida/Huth/Pudil/Saylor
    Hazard/Henderson/Sterling/Chadli/Wanyama
    Costa/Kane/Rooney

I'm kinda swaying towards A because it's more balanced however the lack of Man City cover scares me and I think B could be more explosive despite the poor defence?

    Thanks

Try keeping the common players in the same spots so u get more replys. A for me, although I don't fancy Kane this season and Bs defence is shocking! Yoshida, and Saylor not even nailed and the rest are weak IMO.

          Bacuna, you mean?

No Vlaar or Delph - important part of the spine of their team (regardless of Vlaar's dire form).
Signs at the end of last season that Sherwood had lost the plot with his team defensively - lost 6-1 to us and 4-0 to Arsenal.
A team who rely on counter-attacking football which inevitably piles pressure on their defence.
And uncertainty about keepers, with Guzan having been dropped for Given who has now left.

          There's a host of 4.5s that I'd rather have.

I am becoming less enamoured with the forward options prior to the new season and am considering going 3-5-2 as there seems to be so many options in the midfield which I do like.

The midfield of Hazard - Sterling - Mane - Walcott - Depay just seems to screw the rest of the side a little to much (if I still want Rooney up front) I guess you have to make some kind of concession don't you. Hazard to Fabregas or one of the others?

    Schmei - Fabianksi
    Ivan - Kosc - Alderweireld - Francis - Prodl
    Haz - Ozil - Chadli - Hendo - Wanyama
    Aguero - Wilson - Sakho

Few options I have been tinkering with, can I get a yes/no on these options please -

    A: Ivan + Chadli -> Azpi + Mane
    B: Hendo + Sahko -> Abdi + Benteke
C: Aguero -> Rooney any time or vise versa.

A: I would be happy either way. Ivan is more likely to get goals and assists than Azpi but I think Mane could start the season better than Chadli.

B: I'll go with no because personally I would rather wait and see how Benteke does. Plus I think Hendo and Sahko could start well.

C: I like having the option to switch between the two as needed to start the season in case Aguero is not at match fitness gameweek 1.

Overall it looks like a solid team!

Yes I do, don't want to double up but Bournemouth good starting fixtures and wary of spreading money with the need for aguero and Sanchez in the near future.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.

I've played FPL for a few seasons now and have been in the top 35,000 for the last 2 years but I was always a bit confused with team value.

I know players' price increases/decreases but when I buy them and they are on form, does their price rise in my team OR on the market? I'm only asking because sometimes when I look to sell my player, his price is lower in my team than in the Transfer page.

      Player Prices

Player prices change during the season dependent on the popularity of the player in the transfer market. Player prices do not change until the season starts.

The price shown on your transfers page is a player's selling price. This selling price may be less than the player's current purchase price as a sell-on fee of 50% (rounded up to the nearest £0.1m) will be applied on any profits made on that player.

For example, if you buy a player for £8.3m and when you transfer him his price is £9.0m, his selling price will be £8.6m.

Bottom line: If you get the right player early, you pay less than people getting on the bandwagon late. The pros are that you get the early points from the player and can cash in on the profit if you choose to. The downside is that if you sell the player with the intention of getting him back later on (say he's been injured/banned or facing tough fixtures), you have to pay a bigger difference than other would to get back on.

Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Chadli, (4.5-5ish Mid, cant decide who, I want someone with low ownership and minutes!

    Rooney, Pelle, Wilson

£1mil in the bank, what do you guys think? who would you change? I cant really decide where to put the million, or what to do with my 5th defender and 5th mid spot.....

With those first 3 games and likely not starting 2 if not all 3 I will be avoiding like most until GW4 when he gets a nicer run. If you only want an option for 3 weeks, Giroud looks good against 3 average at best defences and Walcott will be in midfield as Sanchez is out so Giroud will defo play. This also creates about 6m for a short term midfield punt.
Rooney also has 3 good games but I think many with keep him with Aguero due to H/A captain rotation and both being 90 mins a week guaranteed when fit.

  28. Leeroy357
    • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Has anyone put any thought into captain rotation? I have never really done it before but most players tend to perform significantly better at home. There are exceptions such as Aguero who just scores anywhere but Hazard in particular was a lot stronger at Stamford Bridge.
One easy solution is to just pick Rooney and Aguero. GW1 isn't ideal but most people have Walcott, Costa or Hazard to fill this gap anyway. They rotate H/A perfectly all season so you can guarantee a home game from one of them.
I am probably overthinking this as if you have 3 top attacking players, odds are you get a decent fixture each week. Only thought about it because GW2 is clearly problematic (although Rooney at Villa isn't too bad with Sherwood in charge.) I wonder if anyone has properly looked into it.
