Moving Target

Moving Target – Steven Caulker

Earlier this week, Southampton reinforced their depleted defensive ranks with the capture of Queens Park Rangers centre-back Steven Caulker on a season-long loan deal. Speaking on the move, the former Spurs defender explained that Ryan Bertrand’s progression from loanee to permanent signing in 2014/15 inspired his decision:

“It gave me reassurance if ever I needed any. I was always set on joining the club and I will speak with Ryan now I’ve signed. He was in a similar situation last year, joining on loan and then making his move permanent. You’ve only got to look at his success to see what a great club Southampton is and where they can take you. So many young English players have done really well here. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s an exciting challenge but first I have to work to earn my place in the team.”

The History

Born in Feltham, London, Caulker joined Tottenham Hotspur’s youth ranks at the age of 15, penning a professional contract with the club in July 2009. The six foot three inch centre-back moved to Yeovil Town on loan for the 2009/10 season, tallying two assists in 44 starts.

Upon returning to White Hart Lane, Caulker made his senior debut in September 2010, before being sent out on loan to Bristol City for the 2010/11 Championship campaign. Despite suffering knee cartilage damage in March that ended his season prematurely, Caulker was honoured as the Robins’ Young Player of the Year, having bagged two goals and assists in 29 outings.

Caulker then embarked on his third successive loan spell, teaming up with Swansea City in the summer of 2011. After starting in the Swans’ opening quartet of match-ups, the England international succumbed to another knee cartilage injury, ruling him out of their next ten league ties. On his return to full fitness, Caulker started all but two of the Welsh club’s remaining fixtures, notching one assist across 26 appearances.

Impressed by Caulker’s progression, Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas integrated the robust centre-back into his squad for the 2012/13 season. Caulker recorded 18 league outings in all, chalking up two goals and as many assists along the way. In the summer of 2013, Tottenham accepted an £8 million bid from Cardiff City, where he went on to register a career-high tally of five goals in 38 appearances.

In the wake of the Bluebirds’ relegation, Caulker returned to the top tier with QPR. The Hoops shipped the most goals of any side (73) last term, with Caulker tallying one goal and assist in 35 outings.

On the international stage, the defender has racked up 21 appearances for the England Under 19 and 21s, scoring a total of two goals. He has also netted in his only appearances for the senior side, in a friendly against Sweden back in 2012.

The Prospects

With Florin Gardos facing up to seven months on the sidelines following knee surgery and Toby Alderweireld rejecting the chance to return to St Mary’s Stadium, Koeman admitted last week he was on the lookout for “one or maximum two centre-backs for the season ahead. Upon completion of the deal, the Saints boss cited Caulker’s top-flight experience as key to his decision:

“We’re very pleased to have him because we need players in that position. We need the competition there. It’s a good signing for us because we are a little bit weaker in that position than others in terms of numbers. We now have a player with experience in the Premier League and that’s very important. We know that and we are always looking for players who know and are involved in how we play football. We like to build up and we look for players in the defence who can build up the play from behind. That’s always good to have that sort of player.”

Caulker’s arrival now places question marks over Maya Yoshida’s pitch time in the heart of defence. The Japan international has partnered skipper Jose Fonte over the summer and, at a price of 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), could be an absolute steal if he can shrug off Caulker’s threat and continue in the first XI. With uncertainty over his starting place, though, Yoshida looks a risky pick.

Until Caulker is afforded a sustained run of starts, the Tottenham academy product also presents a significant risk. Nonetheless, Caulker’s attacking prowess could encourage an uptake in investment if he cements a regular berth- despite scoring just once last term, only four defenders fashioned more attempts on goal (28). Indeed, amongst defenders, Caulker was second only to Branislav Ivanovic (28 to 30) for efforts inside the box, suggesting that Southampton’s set-piece takers could benefit if the centre-half starts to stick away his opportunities.

Given that Caulker, Fonte and Ryan Bertrand all come in at 5.5, it may well be that new right-back Cedric Soares, at a cost of 5.0, looks the safest option right now. Two goals in 65 outings for Sporting Lisbon is somewhat unspectacular yet his frequency of assists (one every 671 minutes) bettered Nathaniel Clyne’s (801 minutes) last season, providing an insight into his attacking potential.

After yet another summer of restructuring, Southampton will do well to replicate their defensive record in the 2014/15 campaign, where they conceded just one more goal (33) than champions Chelsea and ranked third for clean sheets, keeping out their opponents on 15 occasions for the second successive season. Only time will tell whether Saints have recruited wisely again this transfer window and replacements like Soares and Jordy Clasie are equal to their departed counterparts.

The south coast club’s start to the new campaign certainly encourages investment in their rearguard assets, with Koeman’s side facing just three of last year’s top seven in the opening 13 Gameweeks. Providing Caulker can barge his way past Yoshida in the pecking order, his points potential at both ends of the pitch may well be worth monitoring.

People forget that guys like Hazard are usually the ones who make the difference in games between the top 4 clubs.

Its easy to look at price and think you can get better options if you cut corners and leave players like Hazard out at the start.

The reality is that these kind of players are fixture proof and are the few ones who can get good points from 'hard' games.

But, ultimately, if people want to go for Fabs instead of Haz then I'm not going to put them of. Less people have Haz at the start the better as far as I'm concerned.

Would you not want to captain Hazard even in the easier games though? Huge risk to go without.

                Indeed.

But people think that cutting corners will get them more points.

These premium players like Haz and Kun are expensive for a reason. They can do serious damage in any fixture. This is what you are paying £11.5m and £13m for.

Its like wanting the top of the range Audi A4 but deciding the its too much money and buying a Lexus IS instead. There is a difference and you'll soon find out the reason why the Audi costs more.

I think its dangerous to assume that because a fixture looks hard on paper that you can go without a Premium player.

I have Haz but I really don't care less if other people don't want to start with him.

West Brom away should not be a hard fixture for a champions league team like Chelsea.

A pish poor QPR put 4 past them at the Hawthorns last season. They'll probably be playing Brunt in defence in GW3. Chelsea should be more than capable of scoring in that fixture.

I was originally dead set against going with him and liked the Costa pick better but with him a bit of a risk I reckon its just much easier to go with the guy you know will score 200-250 points. Might not be the best value early on but hes one guy in your team you can lock in for the whole season.

This is why I'm going with Kun from the get go.

I don't trust that waiting until GW4 to get him and Haz in will be a seamless move. If either or both of these players goes up by even just £0.1m each before the end of GW3 it impacts your whole 'wildcard early' strategy.

Get from the start, plug in, play and forget.

I'd say the main reason most here have Rooney is as a placeholder for Aguero so if you are backing him in from the start better forwards picks than Rooney imo. I'd go Rooney down to a Kane/Pelle and try and upgrade alder to a Che/Ars defnder with maybe a mid upgrade as well.

No, he's not. He scored 12 goals playing midfield for most part of the season. 10.5 is amazing for him knowing he will be first choice striker at Man Utd.

Quite like the 3-5-2 strategy early doors with the lack of genuine forward options and gives you a great looking mid but getting in Aguero will in all likelihood cost a WC if you play it this way. Not a template team but see nothing wrong with it imo.

I'd like to think so. We know Sherwood loves him and his form when he broke into the team at the end of last season was terrific. It's either him or Abdi as my 5th mid and I'm not convinced with Abdi's minutes.

Do I go with Cedric, which gives me this over the first five Gw's

    A Newcastle
    H Everton
    A Watford
    H Norwich
    A West Brom

Or a Jenkinson/Mings or Francis rotation which gives me this over the first EIGHT Gw's

    H Villa
    H Leicester
    H Bournemouth
    H Leicester
    H Newcastle
    H Sunderland
    H Norwich
    H Watford

Thanks mate. Did the downgrades in the defence just to squeeze in Silva. want to keep him. Any reason i need to upgrade one 4.0 to 4.5? As I am thinking of playing Mert/Huth/Cedric every week.

    Mane or Tadic?

Both are extremely creative players, with the latter on penalties. Still people on here prefer Mane. Why?

Tadic also got the set pieces. His assists can easily outweigh the goals of Mane. Tadic also gets the goals, occasionally though.

I'm torn between the two. Mane is more explosive, but Tadic's underlying stats are excellent. Plus he has the potential to be involved in a lot of Saints goals (23 point haul last term). I know that was only one game, but he's shown he has potential and for £1m cheaper, I think he is a viable alternative.

      1. banskt
        • 10 Years

Exactly my point. If Tadic and Mane gets similar points, then that 1m could be really worth. 🙂

Cue a mass exodus from Mane to Tadic.

He cost 50 million pounds. He'll get game time. If he doesn't play well and gets benched I won't want him in my team anymore anyway.

Looks like Oxford may be in line for some game time, which has surprised me slightly. I thought Burke had a chance of starting at RB (prior to Jenks' return), but Slav seems to be persisting with JOB disappointingly.

FPL aside, both are bloody excellent prospects and I can wait for them to be playing week in, week out...

Post lost at end of earlier page so reposting. RMT appreciated please on current team and alternative line ups at A/B

    Schmeichel

    Kos/Cedric/Azpi

    Haz/Walcott Silva/Hendo

    Kane/Lukaku/C Wilson

    Bench -Ruddy/Fletcher /Huth/Francis

(Lukaku only for week 1 probably as captain if fit and then change to Pelle for week 2 at same price).

My dilemma is whether to stick or change to

    A. Schneiderlein (in place of Fletcher)
    Ozil (in place of Wal)
    Giroud (in place of Kane)
    Mane(in place of Hendo)

    Or

    B. Aguero (in place of Lukaku)
    Fabregas (in place of Haz)
    Ozil (in place of Wal)
    Mane (in place of Silva).

Despite having Azpi since about day 1, may just go without a Chelsea defender. Quite liking the look of 5/5/4.5/4.5/4 - can get a ridiculous front 8 of:

    Hazard, Walcott, Sterling, Mane, 4.5
    Rooney, Kane, Sakho

    I call them 'Coverage FC'.

Similar to what I'm going for with my front 8, except 4.5 up front and ritchie in mid 3-5-2

My defence is 5/5/4.5/4.5/4.5 with a very similar front 8. I've got Milner instead of Sterling, but I think you can have a decent team without a Chelsea defender.

Really want another Arsenal player in there actually but can't squeeze Rambo & Sterling in there.

        Another thought is Hazard + Bentaleb + Sakho > Cesc + Ramsey + Ighalo in a 3-5-2.

Is this team too light in attack?

    Guzan - Schmeichel

    Mert - Ivan - Mings - Prodl - O'Shea

    Hazard - Cazorla - Sterling - Mane - Brady

    Rooney - Sakho - Wilson

    1. Keatz21

      Maybe.

      Mane --> Payet
      Ivan --> Azpilicueta

Then you could do Sakho --> Pelle.

This still gives you a West Ham and Southampton option in attack, but just sures things up a bit up top.
