Captain Sensible – Gameweek 13

Our sixth members’ article of the international break sees us turn our attentions to the main captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With a 34% share of the vote, Romelu Lukaku is the stand-out captaincy pick ahead of Everton’s home tie against Aston Villa. Profiting from their agreeable schedule, the 8.6-priced Belgian notched two goals and as many assists in the last two Gameweeks, elevating him to joint-second (seven goals) in the league-wide scoring charts. The fact that Villa shipped 13 goals in their previous five road clashes provides further incentive to hand Lukaku the armband.

Jamie Vardy (14%) can equal a Premier League record when Leicester City make the trip to Newcastle, as he attempts to net for the tenth successive start. Whilst there’s no disputing Vardy’s points potential, there are still major doubts over his availability, with Claudio Ranieri remaining uncertain over his star striker’s fitness in yesterday’s press conference. Staying within the Leicester camp, Riyad Mahrez claims a surprisingly low 3% backing for the St James’ Park clash.

Dispelling his slow start to the campaign, Harry Kane (9%) boasts five goals in his last three starts. Spurs’ premier frontman has developed a knack for scoring in derbies, so he’ll fancy his chances at home to a West Ham United rearguard that’s failed to register a shut-out in their previous seven match-ups.

Alexis Sanchez lies just outside the top three with a 6% backing. The Fantasy Premier League’s most expensive (11.6) midfielder has drawn three consecutive blanks but will be encouraged by the fact that West Bromwich Albion rank top for goals conceded at home (12). Mesut Ozil (4%) scoops a more modest share of the vote, despite chalking up eight assists in his previous six starts.

Despite doubts over his minutes, Sergio Aguero has been backed by 4% of voters for City’s clash with Liverpool tomorrow evening. With just one assist to his name in three outings, Kevin De Bruyne (2%) narrowly sneaks into the top 10.

Eden Hazard and Odion Ighalo (2%) matched each other stride for stride in our Captain Poll. The former has no form to speak of (one goal and two assists across 11 starts) but could punish a Norwich City defence that’s failed to keep a clean sheet on their travels. Meanwhile, the latter has been directly involved (five goals and two assists) in all of Watford’s last seven goals, underlining his value as a budget forward.

    Is this too weak? http://imgur.com/PIHXXM5

Can Ighalo do the business over xmas?

Will Bolasie fair better when playing in midfield instead of striker?

Ignore the hit - this will be done over 1-2 weeks and will likely not cost me anything.

    1. Dr Dream
      • 12 Years

Mmmm....Ighalo should make it easy for you to get a strong front eight even with Aguero..Somehow it isn't.

The problem is my distribution of funds - Smalling for example instead of Rojo. Also never having Vardy means I haven't made 0.7m~

And I've lost 0.2m on Payet since he got injured 🙁

I could downgrade Azpilcueta so that I have 3 strong defenders + Huth + 4.5m

But that still only gives me 7.9m for a midfielder - not enough for Ozil

          Yeah, it's showing a little.

Silva, Ozil, Eriksen, Ramsey, Coutinho might have a few pts in them over that over priced KDB....He's a good pick but not for that price.

I'd be playing him every game though - Westwood as fodder. That's one reason I looked at strong defence.

I can get Ozil instead of Bolasie. Means a Smalling downgrade to Rojo and 4.5m def instead of that 4th expensive one. Might be worth it

Ighalo is fine up front but like the others have said, your defence is where your investing too much. Maybe do Clyne > Moreno and then Azpi to a £5m, maybe Dann? Should give you about £1.4m more to work with in Mid

Cheers for replies so far. I can start working towards this instead to give me Ozil - http://imgur.com/YNCpc6p

Main problem is it takes an extra hit and it leaves me with Mitrovic/Pelle this week. Captain Lukaku but no Kane or Aguero....as it's only one week that might be alright.

    Lukaku, Ighalo, Vardy

Using this method of judging success

    Consistent 5-9 pts
    Explosive 10-14 pts
    Dynamite 15-19 pts
    Legendary 20-24 pts
    OMG AGUERO!!! 25+ pts

Here is how the Captain Sensible article cover boys have done so far this season:
    Week 1 - Hazard 2 pts
    Week 2 - Rooney 2 pts
    Week 3 - Aguero 2 pts
    Week 4 - Aguero 2 pts
    Week 5 - Aguero 1 pt
    Week 6 - Benteke 1 pt
    Week 7 - Martial 5 pts (C)
Week 8 - Aguero 25 pts, the prophecy is realized (OMG Aguero!!!)
    Week 9 - Sanchez 10 pts (E)
    Week 10 - Sanchez 2 pts
    Week 11 - De Bruyne 5 pts (C)
    Week 12 - Vardy 9 pts (E)

Horrible first six weeks for the popular picks, as many of us experienced, but the past six gameweeks have been pretty solid with returns in five of them including a once in a season haul.

    A) Williams > Ward/Soare/£4.5m (my defence: Kolarov, Dawson, Moreno, Nyom)

    My frontline as it stands:

    Ighalo - Pelle - Vardy

I'm bringing Lukaku in today without a doubt, the question is who te sell:

-Ighalo: on my bench this week but a nice run of fixtures after the ManU game, good value for his pricetag

    - Pelle: Except for the City game, also decent fixtures ahead, lacking a bit of form lately, also have Mane

    - Vardy: Most consistent player of the game, injury doubt and awful fixtures ahead, exact money for Lukaku

So guys, who is it going to be?

It has to depend on your existing attackers as well!

Yeah well I guess B is the sensible choice as there is no question over Everton's setup and you don't have Lukaku. West Ham will have to adjust to losing Payet and it remains to be seen if Lanzini will fit the bill. I'd probably look no further than Lanzini for Mane next week though! No harm.

I have a FT and can afford Aguero for Pelle, should i or should I not?

have Mane and VVD, no City mid if that might sway your call

I think to follow suit and make sure I don't miss out I will go Lukaku, but I would love to go for Mane or Hazard!

Barkley or Ayew? (already have Lukaku)
Or any other similar priced mid?

    A) Play Darmian and double up with Man Utd defense (+DDG)
    B) Play Kolorov and hope for attacking pts, don't see a CS coming with Kompany out.

Planning on playing Bertrand and Alderweireld as my other two defs.

Mate I would love to captain Hazard this week! I have him in the team but we can't even be sure of his playing time unfortunately. Go with Lukaku if you wanna play it safe, but go with Hazard if you wanna be a legend!

How do the following changes look to bring in Agüero over the next 2 weeks?

    http://i.imgur.com/d5B0oOe.png (*not for a -12 hit!)

    It would be:

    1. Pelle & Kane to Ighalo & Aguero for free next week

    2. Then Myhill & Albrighton to Hennessey & Deulofeu or Bolasie the week or so after.
