FIFFSA 5-a-side World Cup Group Stage – Round up Last 16 Preview

It was a thrilling final round of matches in the group stage of the FIFFSA 5-a-side tournament, with qualification going right down to the wire for many sides. We now have only 16 teams remaining in the tournament as it moves on to the first knockout stage.

Final group stage review

Group A was a fascinating group. Indonesia had a 100% record through the stage, easily overpowering all of their opponents each week and they were the second highest scoring team overall in the group stage with 988 points. The rest of the group was intensely close with Belgium, Costa Rica and Norway each picking up a win. Belgium took the qualifying spot thanks to a superior points total over their opposition.

Group B was another group where the the group winners won through comfortably with three straight wins. This resulted in New Caledonia coming through and qualifying with the fourth highest points total (963). The second spot came down to a shoot-out between Egypt and Montenegro in the third match of qualifying, which Egypt won comfortably 324-294, taking them through as well. Mexico had a tough three matches and finished the group in bottom spot.

Group C was a much tighter affair where Australia (fifth highest scoring side) overtook Cuba to top the group in the third match of the stage. Cuba still qualified comfortably in second place in the group with two wins; Germany and Italy finish off the group with a win apiece. Italy can consider themselves hard done by as the highest scorers not to qualify with 933 points. Nine teams qualified for the knockout stages with fewer points than that.

Group D‘s table topper and third highest scoring side in the group stage, Djibouti, have been putting together an impressive run of results in the competition and have now chalked up nine straight wins in the competition, with yet another win against Peru. Bosnia qualified in second place after winning a straight fight against Malaysia 306-278, while Peru finish off the group bottom and winless.

Group E was the lowest scoring group with no teams scoring the average team score of 928. The leaders Argentina got through the group stage comfortably with three straight wins totalling only 868 points, which is the lowest scoring of all teams qualifying for the next round. Zambia are the other side through after securing a tight win against Israel (306-298) while Israel fell just short in their final match against Argentina. Northern Ireland finished the group bottom.

It was a tight affair in Group F. Jamaica secured top spot with a narrow victory over Columbia in their final match (309-300).  Jamaica were the seventh highest scoring team overall. Colombia also qualified from the group in second place courtesy of Tahiti losing to Sri Lanka in their final match. Both finished the stage a win apiece and filled the bottom two slots.

Group G was dominated by Singapore, the group stage top scorers and the only side to break the 1000 point barrier (1003) over the course of the three games. They won all three games comfortably and will be amongst the favourites for the tournament. The rest of the group was too close to call as Portugal, India and Uruguay all finished with one win. It went down to points scored and only 29 points split the three sides with Portugal edging their way into the second qualifying spot ahead of India and Uruguay consecutively.

It all went down to the wire in Group H. Going down to the last match any side could qualify or fail to qualify. The ghost ship Iceland again proved how dangerous they are by putting in a good win against Finland 341 – 308, securing them top spot. The Seychelles beat Wales by 313-293 which meant they qualified ahead of Finland by only one point. This left the top scorers from the qualifiers, Wales, winless at the bottom of the table.

Group Award winners

The biggest score of the week was Indonesia with 348 points.

The luckiest team award goes to Argentina who managed to beat Israel with only 283 points, 23 beneath the average of 307.

The unluckiest team award goes to Belgium who lost having scored 326 points, 19 above average.

The worst benching decision goes to Sri Lanka who benched Smcelheron who went on to score a whopping 78 points, which would have been their highest score of the week.

The presser award for Group Stages Gameweek 3 goes to our very own Diva for his take on the Beach,

Keep the pressers up! There are so many excellent contributors which have yet to win awards. If you haven’t submitted one before why not submit one this week? it could be your last opportunity.

First Knockout Stage Preview

The last 16 Matches are:

Indonesia v Egypt

Australia v Bosnia & H.

Argentina v Colombia

Singapore v Seychelles

Belgium v New Caledonia

Cuba v Djibouti

Zambia v Jamaica

Portugal v Iceland

Ties of note are the two lowest scoring sides in the group stage, Argentina and Columbia, who play each other for the second time this tournament. In qualifying it was a very tight affair, with Colombia winning 304-300.

The highest scorers of the group stage, Singapore, play The Seychelles, who are very lucky to still be in the tournament.

Similarly, based upon group stage results you would expect wins for Indonesia, New Caledonia, Jamaica and Djibouti. But as Wales has shown on this tournament your past results count for nothing.

Please see our new Tournament Spreadsheet. All scores, player, fixture and tables information can be found here.

Further Information

A quick reminder of the format. Each Gameweek, teams will pick a team of five players to go head to head with their opposite nation. The match will then be decided by the aggregate score of each team’s Gameweek scores after hits have been accounted for.

As we are now in the knockout rounds, if there is a tie captains’ scores shall determine the winner, unless the captain is on the bench in which case it goes to second on the teamsheet. If it is still a tie, the match shall be taken to standard FPL H2H tiebreakers.

Captains are required to submit their team sheets to fiffsa.exec@gmail.com by 2300 (GMT) on Friday Feb 12th otherwise their sixth player will be automatically benched.

Live scorecards will be up shortly before the first kick-off on Saturday at the above spreadsheet

If you have any further queries, feel free to ask below in the comments or email us at fiffsa.exec@gmail.com

This is Belgium's first presser. I don't know really what to say but I will give it a go.

TEAM NEWS - Lets start with that shall we?

Yes , yes. All the players are fit and ready for the match against New Caledonia. We have a few HITS here or there which we will assess later in the week. Who will be benched? No , I cant tell you that... 😉

Next question? - REACTION TO LOSS?

Ah yes 🙁 . I have to say we played very VERY well , in fact I think we deserved to WIN. Some dodgy Cech BAPS...oh never mind. It was a close game and Indonesia played better than us ON the day.

OPPONENT - How will Belgium approach the game?

We don't make any special strategies for games.... we just try to play to the very best we can without thinking about the others. New Caledonia are a very good team , they topped their group but we will try our utmost to beat them...

POOR FORM - Belgium have accrued just 3 points in the Group Stages and have accrued the least number of points in FIFFSA(Qualification + Group Stages) of the present teams

    👿
Form is TEMPORARY , class is PERMANENT ❗

    TOUS ENSEMBLE!!! 😎 😎

In response to the first press conference of our Belgium friends here is the first press conference from New Caledonia:

      Q. Where on earth is New Caledonia?

      A. You can find us in the southwest of the Pacific Ocean, to the east of Australia. It is a hotbed of fantasy football!

      Q. Yourself and your team mates don't post very often on the FFS site and are relatively unknown. Anything you'd like to impart to the community?

      A. Yes we are quite unknown and we don't often share our thoughts on the site but we are all fantasy football nuts (well me anyway), some of us playing for a long time and others competing for the first time this year. This mix seems to have worked ok for us in the tournament thus far. We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone on the fantasy football scout site for all the work they put in to help fantasy football community. It has been invaluable to all of us. Thanks folks.

      Q. New Caledonia topped their qualifying group, a group that contained the strong Singapore and Australian teams and then the World cup group stage with maximum points, does this make you favourites for your clash with Belgium?

      A. Absolutely not. Belgium carded a great score last week (we would have tied if we had played them then!) and their team(s) is/are pretty solid going into this tie. Our team(s) will need to achieve above average scores and hope for a bit of luck to get past the red devils.

      Q. Have you enjoyed the tournament?

A.We've really enjoyed it and it has been a pleasant distraction during a very testing random season. It has been great fun and I hope we can sneak through to the next round. We would like to thank the FIFFSA Exec committee for all their efforts in organising this, great work troops! We really appreciate all your efforts.

      Q. Do you like song 'Caledonia' chosen for you by Robinson Cheeseoid?

      A. Yes we do. It has been our anthem all the way through. We prefer the Frankie Miller version mind although Paolo does a decent job:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZrdo1PuUvQ

      Q. Can you win the tournament?

      A. At this point anyone can, I think we have as good a chance as anyone. Whoever wins it will have to hit consistently high scores all the way through and they will need a slice (probably a big slice)of luck to win the whole thing. May the best team win Belgium, good luck! Allez équipe Nouvelle-Calédonie!

Reports suggest that team Djibouti have been ramping up their training ahead of their all important clash against Cuba. Although they the team is feeling the heat before the tournament's first knockout match, they are confident of winning for the 10th time in a row.

Further reports suggest that after an intense training session was finished Djibouti had a team meeting about their tactics and many different approaches were discussed. The meeting lasted long way to the night and no stone was unturned. Some people are saying that this might hinder Djibouti's recovery, but the lads are confident that with a couple of days of lighter training and good sleep they will be ready to do what they do best, win.

Zambia have had our pre pre team talk. We look in good shape and like Tyson Fury against Klitschko expect some surprises Jamaica. Lateriser, Christina, Acquafresca, Epic Fail all legends of the game. But when you are defeated you will know who we are.... You will remember our names. Do not underestimate us, we are low scorers yes but take us lightly at your peril. In to the breach men for tomorrow night we dine in hell.

( all in good faith as we expect a spanking :))

Sporting is a comedian and Tahiti is his joke,
We beat them thanks to that Firmino bloke,
As we train through our routine of puff puff pass,
Looking to indulge in all kinds of grass,
Zambia is who we face next, who are they we don't know,
But Missus Epic Fail's face is a glow,
We've got a weapon, one that makes us able,
No we're not talking about Doosra's precious tables,
Zambia is led by that many Joonyleeds,
Jamaica is led by their love for the show weeds,
In this GW where the top 4 play each other,
We decide that planning won't help, lets not bother,
All we need to do is shut our eyes and roll the dice,
Take the cat out of play and out come the mice.

Previously, on our quest for the beach: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/01/29/fiffsa-5-a-side-world-cup-group-stage-round-up/?hc_page=3#hc_comment_12621794

We hit the water with a thump, but most of us popped up unscathed. We had all jumped off the waterfall feet first, except for Blue Lion who dived into the plunge pool face first.

The poor lion, who was already suffering a sore back after being hit by a new potato from Christina’s spud gun, surfaced with blood pouring out of his nose. We dragged him to the side of the pool, where Wales were waiting for us.

“His nose is broken,” said Jawain.

“I have an idea,” said Cheeseoid, who promptly began running around the clearing like Dizzy on a quest, gathering up various items he found lying around. Working quickly, he fashioned a mask from an old coconut shell, vine leaves and a discarded tie from one of Jonty’s football socks. He placed it carefully on Blue Lion to protect his battered snout.

“Dhanks,” said Blue Lion “dut di dhink di’d detter dit dis don dout.”

With Blue Lion looking on like a tropical Phantom of the Opera, we put Wales to the sword then gathered around Green Windmill’s transistor radio to listen to the football results. Instead of hearing Charlotte Green, the crackling radio spat out two sentences of news before the batteries died.

“A speed boat carrying the Finnish five-a-side team sank in the Gulf of Thailand this afternoon after colliding with a suspected ghost ship. One eye-witness report suggested the ship was registered in Reykjavík.”

We sat in silence for a minute, absorbing the news that Finland, the team we had shared Salmiakki Koskenkorva with just a few days ago, were gone.

“You know what this means,” said Balders quietly. “We’re through, we’ve reached the last 16.”

Athletic Timbo passed around cups of tea and we all drank a silent tribute to the Finns. I also toasted our Welsh adversaries on a game played in a fair and amicable manner.

We were packing up our gear ready to continue our quest for the beach, when we heard a mighty yorp.

There, atop the same waterfall we had jumped off just a few hours earlier, was Edison, ElementWire, Bronaldinho, Jape, Mr J and Nish 2.

They leapt off and swam over to the clearing we were in.

“You,” shouted Jape at Cheeseoid. “I challenge you! We’re the mighty Singapore and we’re going to crush you.”

“Do dand doose darmy?” said Blue Lion from behind his mask.

    We all laughed.

Then Cheeseoid's grin slackened as a serious look stole over his face. He turned to the Seychelles team and said with quiet determination: “Let’s finish them.”

It will be close I think. It will come down to whether one of our big differentials performs or not I suspect

Great to see the front two of Adebayor and Wickham combing for the goal. At last a goal from a Striker from open play 😀

No CSs and the main players not scoring might actually be a good thing this week. Those of us with 2 FTs don't want too much price movements. 😛

Having taken no account of baps or autosubs or anything Singapore leads Seychelles 119-102 before the Chelsea game.

Unfortunately their Willian negates a chunk of our 2 x Costa.

Jamaica vs. Zambia update. Its going to be close. We still have a chance with that Zambian bench boost.

    Jamaica : Bellerin + Moreno + Aguero + Vardy x 2
    Zambia : Toby + Alexis + Giroud + 14 pts

I think you missed out a Sanchez for us. I calculated:

      Jamaica: Bellerin + Moreno + Aguero + Vardy x2
      Zambia: Alderweireld + Sanchez x2 + Giroud + 14pts

      Still close though.

Djibouti 120p: 3x Bellerin, 3x Firmino, Huth, Sanchez

Cuba 133p: 2x Vardy, 2x Agüero, 2x Kane, Moreno, Alli, Mahrez, Özil, Schmeichel, Koscielny, Fuchs

    It was fun 🙁

I know, need blanks from their attackers to go with it.

The irony would be that troll-Moreno finally gets that haul and knocks us out (I'm our only Moreno owner)

Cheers, I was going to post this after the baps. I had you down for Sanchez x2, but the rest tallies. I'm still a bit worried about Firmino - nearly capped him.

We just got 2 more players added with Sanchez and Lloris (thanks Reedy), so it doesn't look as bad.
