The Numbers Game – 2015/16 Review – Guidolin’s Swansea

We continue our series of members’ articles, which review the numbers behind the 2015/16 season, with a look at Swansea City’s progress under new manager Francesco Guidolin.

First off, we check the Swans’ team statistics from the point of the Italian’s appointment in Gameweek 23 and compare them to the previous numbers under former boss Garry Monk as well as the rest of Premier League. We’ll also analyse their first-team squad, main goal threats and creative sources in an attempt to gain insight on their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

The Welsh club were quick off the mark last time out, drawing against Chelsea and beating Man United in the opening four rounds of fixtures. That early-season form was short-lived, though, and, by the time of Monk’s departure, they sat just a single point ahead of the drop zone after winning one of his final 11 league encounters at the helm.

Guidolin’s impact was immediate. Starting with a 2-1 triumph at Everton on his debut, he steered the club to seven wins in the final 16 matches, compared to five victories in 22 beforehand, in a run that ultimately saw them finish 12 points clear of the bottom three.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

At 6.5m which Premier League side would you want Balotelli to sign for to make you put him in your team?

Can't see it - MLS, China, Qatar or somewhere like that beckons I reckon

I'd probably be tempted at that price if he went anywhere he'd be first choice.

Although, saying that, he finds it hard to motivate himself enough to play well when he's at big teams (and Liverpool), so what's to suggest he'd put some effort in when playing just to avoid relegation, or fight for Europa.

I'm not 100% sold on him, but he's so tempting at 7.5...

Depends on how they line up, though. If he plays deep in a 4-2-4 (as people keep suggesting he will), I'll rethink. Maybe in favour of Willian.

So long as he gets the full 90mins, w/ his underlying stats there's little chance he doesn't return value.

Seriously considering it, but have Shaw at the moment and you know I'll be having to replace him in a month or so when he gets his customary injury, so I'm not sure I want 2 guaranteed sick notes in my team.

Is Koeman really a good manager defensively, or is it more down to Southampton?

Reminds me of Swansea; no matter what manager is there they always seem to keep an nice amount of clean sheets at home. Likewise Southampton under both Pochettino and Koeman were fairly consistent.

Can he really turn Everton into a 10-15 clean sheet team? Jagielka and Baines are getting on, and they're likely to lose Stones. I'm just not sold entirely.... 😕

    1. I Member
      • 9 Years

They won't be as bad as they were under Martinez and even if they don't keep 10-15 clean sheets I expect attacking returns from Coleman/Baines.

    2. Miami Weiss
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 3 months ago

If Baines gets put back on set pieces (and shows that he hasn't lost his touch) then just one or two extra clean sheets would make Baines a very good pick

They havent really lost anyone of major influence in that backline so in theory it should still gel in the same way Moyes made it, think Koeman will bring a level of defence that Martinez failed to.

There were too many draws for evertone last year. They coceded so many late goals.so many times they were winning a match going in last 20 mins.

All these are reason Martinez is not there and koeman taking over.

I think they will priorities the defending.

    My latest draft:

    Foster / Mandanda

Shaw Friend Terry // Pieters Francis

Martial Eriksen Willian Townsend // Feghouli

    Kun Lukaku Wilson

I'm quite liking the spread of different value players across the midelfied from 5.5 to 9.5

My front line is Ibra - Kun - Austin

Which option is best for mids:

    A) 10.5 - 9.5 - 7.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

    B) 7.5 - 9.5 - 7.5 - 7.5 - 4.5

Currently have KDB - Mahrez - Siggy, i prefer the attacking power of A seeing as i will be WCing in GW4 but B seems to be more balanced

    Heaton, Foster
    Shaw, Wimmer, Friend (Francis, Kingsley)

    Aguero, Lukaku, Wilson

left 1m in the bank so I have so cash to make changes after gameweek 1 if neccessary (eg, hazard to kdb/sanchez)

Surprised by the knee-jerking after the Utd result. Isn't the point of pre-season from a fantasy perspective to look at tactics/line ups rather than results/form?

Do you remember two yrs ago when Utd had that great pre-season when they scored for fun against sides like Milan & Real but when the season started they couldn't score at all?

Yeah, Kone was good. Got a brace one match...

        Think Friend will be good?

Depends which block of fixtures you are talking I guess...Evans(4.5m) looks fine for first 5 or so.

I might double up on Foster + Evans.

Francis is excellent when at RB. I really hope he is going to be again.

      Bonus and attacking threat.

Holebas is very attacking and could be lwb, only issue is game time. One to watch.

Just one assist from Pieters last season though. Wolly beat him in ppg due to his heavy baseline bps.

      > Who are the best attacking defenders for 4.5m

Giggs, I was thinking the same thing but we rotate these guys so much it's pretty much blind luck to have them in for an attacking return.

A set & it & forget it guy like Bellerin is a diff story but, w/ the 4.5mil crowd I'm chasing those who'll nab me a 3pt BP after a CS not, one I think may get lucky 3 of the 38wks to bury a header off a corner.

With assisters the fixtures help imo.

It's the goalscoring CBs that seem more random.

          > It's the goalscoring CBs that seem more random.

          Agreed.

My issue is when I'm faced w/ a choice of playing one 4.5 for a CS & the other for an attacking return, I feel better equipped to pick out the CS than the potential Ast.

          eg.
          Defender A v. Everton
          Defender B v. WBA

          I take B) everytime...

All that said, I have locked in mostly FB's in my back line & hope to get lucky.

Negredo is a 30yr old striker & plays for a bottom tier side.
If he starts firing, fine I'll have no issue snaging him.
But, his price isn't prohibitive so, I feel confortbale waiting.

Hardly inspiring , so yeah if he kicks off strong bring him in. But does'nt appeal yet

No prohibiting, no - but it is enabling.

Who else looks decent in that bracket? Wilson, maybe?

I'm going for Negredo, at least until someone else in that price bracket starts scoring.

        Gray, Long, Austin...
All guy's I'd feel safer to start w/.

I loved Beast Mode @ MCI & don't know why he faded the way he did but, he's 2+yrs older now & never returned to form since his exit.

Long/Austin if one of them is a clear first choice and doesn't lose too many minutes to the other, for sure.

Dja Djedje ruins Paredes possibilities of getting a chance. And for 4.5 he's interesting but Nyom will probably hold his spot as a starter

I just went to add Negredo, but saw "Mid" under his name and was really confused for a few seconds as to why he wasn't listed as a striker 😳

Worst thing is, the same thing happened a few days ago when I toyed with the idea of putting Rhodes in my team.
