Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope

The current lull in domestic action allows us an opportunity to check in on the latest band of miscreants to dominate our Suspension Tightrope ahead of Gameweek 8.

Essentially, the Suspension Tightrope widget keeps a tally of cards accumulated from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League.

It is available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

We’ll update the widget after each Gameweek, and roll out articles such as this one, which go over the Fantasy implications of the cards collected.

This includes the latest suspensions, along with updates of the yellow card totals of the most regular perpetrators as they edge towards a domestic ban and climb onto the ‘Suspension Tightrope’.

As mentioned in our first Suspension Tightrope article of the season, the FA have altered the curfew rules for players accumulating yellow and red cards in 2017/18.

According to this season’s FA handbook.

A Player accumulating five cautions will be automatically suspended for one first-team competitive match if he has accumulated those five cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League19
EFL19
National League23

A Player accumulating ten cautions will be automatically suspended for two FTCM if he has accumulated those ten cautions in (up to and including) the number of matches in the relevant League as set out in the table below:

LeagueLeague Matches
Premier League32
EFL37
National League37

Basically, players have to avoid five bookings over their respective team’s first 19 Premier League matches in order to sidestep a suspension.

Similarly, they must steer clear of 10 cautions over their side’s 32 opening top-flight matches to prevent a ban.

From a Fantasy point of view, then, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards.

And Gameweek 32 – on Saturday March 31 – is currently the curfew for 10 yellow cards.

However, we’ve recently spoken to the FA for some clarification on this matter and they have confirmed that, regardless of when their fixtures fall, the 19th and 32nd Premier League fixtures are the cut-off points for five and ten bookings respectively.

So if Arsenal, for example, had a match postponed in November, which later fell after December 23rd (ie, the current date when 19 Gameweeks could be completed), then their players would still be liable to a suspension in that 19th fixture.

The second cut-off point is particularly pertinent, then, bearing in mind that the final of the Carabao Cup will take place in Gameweek 28 and the FA Cup Quarter Finals fall in Gameweek 31.

Those teams involved in either of those will face a postponed fixture and, therefore, their players will have a curfew for 10 cards extended.

Any ban to the current crop of players on four yellows – Palace’s Jason Puncheon, Southampton’s Oriol Romeu, Swansea’s Leroy Fer and West Ham right-back Pablo Zabaleta – would have minimal Fantasy impact.

Lower down, though, there are some big-hitters who currently sit just two yellows shy of a single-match suspension

Chelsea duo David Luiz and Marcos Alonso, along with Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi and Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, are among the 11 most owned defenders in FPL.

Worryingly, Alonso – boasting a 17.7% ownership – has already surpassed his tally of two yellows in the Premier League from last season.

Otamendi has collected a yellow card in three of the last five Gameweeks and, having earned nine bookings in each of the last two seasons, faces a tough task to avoid toppling off the Tightrope.

Potentially, once they have collected a fourth yellow, their managers could look to manage their respective fixtures in order to avoid picking up a ban for a “big match” against their league rivals.

So in Alonso’s case, Chelsea have a fixture against Manchester United in Gameweek 11. A booking in either Gameweek 8 or 9 could see him protected in the Gameweek 10 trip to Bournemouth.

For Otamendi, the clash with Arsenal – also in Gameweek 11 – looks the hotspot. So Pep Guardiola will be very wary of playing the Argentine in Gameweek 10 at West Brom, should the defender pick up a card in either Gameweek 8 or 9.

On the plus side, neither Otamendi or Alonso would seem likely to be called into action for their respective Carabao Cup ties which lie between Gameweeks 9 and 10 with this scenario in mind.

Or being cynical about it, back-to-back bookings in the next two Gameweeks would even allow them to serve out the suspension in the Carabao Cup, giving them the midweek off and getting the ban out of the way in advance.

Elsewhere, Newcastle United’s Matt Ritchie is the other standout name here, having served up four assists in the opening seven.

The Scotland international was booked three times in the first four Gameweeks but has now gone three league matches without incurring the referee’s wrath.

Finally, Brighton’s Tomer Hemed is the only player suspended from domestic duties in the Premier League. After serving the first of a three-match ban last weekend, he won’t return to action until the Gameweek 10 home clash against Southampton.

That match against the Saints is the first of four home matches in six for Chris Hughton’s side, which also includes a trip to Swansea City.

Having bagged two goals and an assist in his last two outings at the Amex, Hemed – at 4.9 – could yet emerge as a valid option for those on the lookout for a cut-price pick in attack.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

hey guys thoughts on the WC

    pope, Elliot
    jones, stones, monreal, bavies, mbemba
    hazard, silva, choupo, RLC, carrol
    kane, lukaku, vardy

other option is to upgrade vardy to jesus, downgrade haz to coutinho, but this looks more balanced

Lots of 4.5 GK options imo.. hard to choose from (Pope/Fabianski/Ryan all rotate pretty well with Elliot). Personally I went with Elliot + 4.0 GK to free up funds.. gonna stick with that until Newcastles fixtures turnaround.. not sure the ekstra 0.5 is gonna give you a Lot of CS down the road anyway.. Rather spend it improving elsewhere.

Not sure Stones is nailed when Kompany returns.. Rest looks pretty good though I prolly would not get Lukaku om a wc.. rather have Jesus as he is a better captain option in gw10 and upgrade elsewhere (Stones etc). But I could be wrong

I would consider Elliot + 4 if I wasn't on a wildcard but don't like the though of Elliot getting injured and needing to take a hit to get a playing GK
Elliot + pope gives me 2 choices and burnley are better for CS than swans and brighton (imo)

I would love to have the balls to do lukaku to jesus but the ownership scares me, I've had him from the start and he hasn't let me down and if I want him back the price jump will be annoying.

    Current team

    De Gea (Elliott)

Danilo / Cedric / Daniels (Mee / Dunk)

David Silva / Mkhitaryan / Eriksen / Redmond (Caroll)

    Lukaku / Morata / Rodriguez

    thinking of maybe Wildcarding, thoughts

also Thoughts on this for a Wildcard team?

    De Gea (Elliott)

    Rudiger / Ward / Zanka (Dunk / 4.5m)

Coutinho / David Silva / Pedro / Fellaini (Carroll)

    Kane / Jesus / Vardy

David Luiz is banned for one more game right? - plan would be to move Rudger to him

    Afternoon guys and gals

Alexis Sanchez. I've got him and was planning to switch to Hazard @Palace for free until Morata pulled up. While I think Sanchez is maybe a couple of million too expensive now that we know he's not on pens, I think Hazard is priced about right.

Would you keep Sanchez for Watford away (the Man City result is still in mind), or take a -4 to bring in Hazard. This would also free up 1.4m for switching Calvert-Lewin to Joselu or similar in GW9. Thanks all.

I've thought about this but then I'd be taking a hit to get Joselu vs Palace in GW9, or switching out Alli if he blanks vs Bournemouth. Might be better to take the hit this week with the prospect of making those points back vs Palace and having funds in the bank ready for GW9 moves?

I would definitely not be taking a hit to get joselu in and I'm a Newcastle supporter!
if your set on taking a hit then definitely this week and try and get the haz vs palace points

No, exactly! I think a mid priced striker may present themselves soon but if not 1.5m from Sanchez > Hazard and another 1.5m from an Alli downgrade means I'm shopping in the 8m range for a 3rd striker.

Hey Doos. Good point as Man Utd play Spurs that week, while Arsenal face the Swans. But Chelsea also have a nice fixture in Bournemouth away. Admittedly, Hazard hasn't always been the best captain option away from home...

Very good point. I'm considering him this week away at Watford, but if I get Hazard I meet throw the armband on him. I don't have Kane, so Alli maybe is another option.

After that, I'd only consider him in GW10 for Swans.

        So potentially yes.

If you captain him at least 2 of the next 3 then i say stick with him for now. If not, he's overpriced and Hazard as a long term option would be better value I feel 🙂

Exactly. He would need to average about 9 points per game as a non captain to justify his place in your squad, I'm not sure he or Arsenal are capable of that at present.

He is also in Chile as we speak, Arsene has rested him before after Internationals, which is another factor to consider. Plus the other stuff like wanting to leave Arsenal, eyeing up clubs abroad he can move to for free etc etc.

What are everyones thoughts on Batshuayi?

I am finding it increasingly hard to find a way of fitting Kane, Lukaku & Jesus into my WC team without completely outbalancing the rest of the team. Who I ditch from the favoured 3 is another discussion.

Therefore I find myself contemplating one of the following forwards:

    - Vardy - least risky, nice run of fixtures, I should pick him..

    - Firimino - did have in team, seems to have run out of steam, Liverpool fixtures have turned and is now a rotation risk.

    - Cheap option of Abraham/Calver-Lewin/Hemed etc. - don't personally fancy the cheap forward approach as none of the options are particularly enticing, in form or scoring points.

    - Batshuayi - Morata looks to be out for 4+ weeks, Conte doesn't seem to fancy Batshuayi 100%, however with pal, WAT, bou over the next 3 gameweeks, I believe he will be given a chance. There are no other striker options at Chelsea unless you employ Hazard/Pedro as the fake 9, which historically hasn't worked with this Chelsea team. This Chelsea team have so much going forwards, if Batshuayi is put in the striker role, I am confident he will succeed. Of course this is a fairly short term stop gap until Morata is back and THE question is, does he get the nod from Conte?

    Your thoughts please...

He'll play him. He did well in pre-season and cup games he's started since.
He could be a risk worth taking over the next month. If not stay safe with Vardy.
Firmino & Jesus have to travel back on Thursday for Saturday.

Brazil playing 12.30am Wednesday so probably Wednesday not Thursday.
He'll play a lot of minutes though same as Coutinho.

If Vardy didn't have favourable fixtures then Batshuayi, but it has to be Vardy... he's on pens too.

If Batshuayi is not fancied by Conte, Hazard all of a sudden becomes extremely desirable playing OOP in that fake 9 role.

You have correctly pointed out that batshuayi is too much of a risk.

Vardy the stand out option of those 3 and ig you want to take a punt on chelsea which I think you do then pedro would be my man of choice.

At least that way you have plenty in the bank to strengthen elsewhere again if needs be

I'm gonna be patient and wait a little longer before getting rid. Chelski have great fixtures and he's basically a left winger who gets clean sheet points.

Likewise here. It is very tempting to downgrade to Azpi in an attempt to free up funds - but I know if I do; if I wanted to get Alonso back in - it'd be more difficult.

Holding now, but potentially downgrading later if there are no attacking returns.

First time commenter. Thoughts on this WC

    DEF: Bdavies, Jones, Ward, Simpson

    MID: Hazard, Silva, Coutinho

    FWD: Kane, Jesus, Vardy

    SUBS (Mbemba, T Carrol, RLC)

Chasing the pack so thought I would take a risk on Eden in case he explodes.

    There are a full 4 GW's between 23rd Dec (GW19) & 1st Jan (GW23)

That's 40x premier league games in a week - WTF

23rd December to 1st January is longer than a week - plus after 1st January there are no league games for almost 2 weeks (due to the FA Cup) so plenty of time for the hard-done by multi-millionaires to get a bit of precious rest 🙂

Looking at the discussion above on Batshuayi and Hazard it seems that it's unlikely that he'll be given the striker role and that Hazard is not convincing many either. Do we opt for a Chelsea defender then?

    1. EmreCan Hustle
      • 12 Years

A Chelsea defender seems a must. I think Hazard will continue to do well against weaker teams at home. Doesn't mean he justifies his price tag.

Not sure why Batshuayi didn't come on when Morata got injured.

As long as Usamov holds some stake, Kroenke is required to publish financials to the public, but if he alone holds 97% stake then he can work in any amount of secrecy.
