Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 21

Earlier today, we launched our Gameweek 21 Captain Poll as Fantasy Premier League managers prepare for Saturday’s 2pm deadline.

Once again, rest and rotation could play a part in our assessment as the relentless festive programme continues.

Although Spurs’ weekend blank rules Harry Kane out of armband contention, a number of big-hitters are handed very favourable fixtures, with five of the top six going head-to-head against struggling defences.

Liverpool trio Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho are bound to earn big interest at home to a Leicester City side that’s mustered just one clean sheet in ten.

All three have valid claims for the armband.

Salah is second only to Kane for shots (45), efforts in the box (32) and attempts on target (15) at home this season and has produced returns in seven of nine starts at Anfield.

Runner-up to the Spurs striker for the Gameweek 20 captaincy among FPL managers, he has already established a significant lead in our Captain Poll and has earned over 27% of the votes cast.

The number one transfer target since Tuesday’s deadline passed, Firmino has now bettered the Egyptian for points returns in each of the last three Gameweeks, delivering double-digit hauls on each occasion.

Meanwhile, Coutinho’s goal and and assist at home to Swansea has edged him ahead of Salah for points per match (ppm) this season, by 7.8 to 7.7.

As always with the Reds, Jurgen Klopp’s teamsheet could scupper the plans of Fantasy managers.

Firmino and Salah were withdrawn midway through the second-half against the Swans and look very likely to retain their roles in the XI, while Coutinho’s owners will be hoping that a 90-minute outing on Tuesday doesn’t impact on his upcoming pitch-time.

With four goals and two assists in his last seven outings, Riyad Mahrez is the visitors’ form player as they attempt to breach a defence that has conceded just three times in front of their own fans.

And Jamie Vardy’s record of six goals in seven appearances against the Reds is highly impressive.

Elsewhere a visit from Stoke’s porous and injury-hit defence looks promising for Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

Alvaro Morata returned to the teamsheet and headed the opener against Brighton on Tuesday and has now scored in three of his last four league outings at Stamford Bridge.

The Spaniard bagged a hat-trick against the Potters, racking up 17 points in Gameweek 6, though that was, nonetheless, the last time he managed a double-digit return.

Morata’s comeback failed to spark Eden Hazard into life against the Seagulls on Boxing Day.

However, after being replaced just after 70 minutes, he looks set to start against a depleted Potters defence that’s conceded more goals (41) than any side.

Marcos Alonso carries strong form into the weekend – he has now delivered back-to-back goals and 14-point returns in home matches.

Over the last four Gameweeks, only three players have managed more shots on target than the wing-back’s six.

Manchester City’s key assets will also be in contention for a trip to Crystal Palace.

Raheem Sterling heads to Newcastle tonight on the back of three goals and a trio of assists in as many appearances, while Kevin De Bruyne has three sets of double-figure returns in six.

David Silva has scored three times in his last two road trips but with reports indicating he is back in Spain due to personal reasons, the Spaniard’s pitch-times looks in question.

Depending on who starts at St James’ Park later this evening, Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus could also profit against a defence that has yet to keep a clean sheet in front of their own supporters.

A visit from Southampton could elevate Man United’s main men.

Jesse Lingard is the form option against a defence with a single shutout in 15 Gameweeks. The top transfer target in midfield ahead of Gameweek 21, he’s served up six goals, two assists and four 10+ points hauls in the last seven matches.

Romelu Lukaku netted the winner in a 1-0 victory over the Saints in Gameweek 6 and has a strong history against them, netting six times in nine league appearances.

Despite his poor recent form, the Belgian remains a factor in the FPL armband standings – he was third top captain choice (13.6%) for Gameweek 20.

Paul Pogba, meanwhile, has fired more efforts on goal (nine) than any team-mate since returning from suspension over the last two Gameweeks, though only one of those efforts has been from inside the box.

Arsenal’s trip to West Brom could prove profitable for Alexandre Lacazette.

The Frenchman scored both goals in a 2-0 win over the Baggies in Gameweek 6 to tally 13 points – his highest of the season.

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil has found the net in back-to-back outings for the first time this term ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Selhurst Park, while Alexis Sanchez has notched three times in his last four against the Hawthorns outfit.

A home clash with basement-dwellers Swansea boosts the prospects of Richarlison at Vicarage Road.

Although he’s failed to score since Gameweek 12, the Watford attacker is ranked fourth for shots inside the box in the last four rounds of fixtures – a total of 11 is level with Firmino and West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic.

His visitors, meanwhile, have conceded more goals (13), efforts in the box (48) and attempts on target (31) than any side in the previous four Gameweeks.

Everton’s trip to Bournemouth could also benefit Wayne Rooney – providing he recovers from illness, of course.

The Toffees’ frontman has returned six goals and three assists in his last five and now faces a defence that’s been breached 11 times in three Gameweeks.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 21 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Current team for next GW:

    DDG (Elliot*)
Alonso / Otamendi / Mee (Ogbonna* / Hunimeier*)
    Salah / Sterling / Silva* / Richarlison / Gross
    Morata / DCL (Kane*)

    Option A:
For GW21: Silva → (Lingard? ANY less than 8.7m.)
    For GW22: Richarlison, [8.8m] → Arnautovic, Son (-4)

    Option B:
    For GW21: Silva → RLC
For GW22: Richarlison, Gross → Arnautovic, Alli (-4)

    Option C:
For GW21: Save FT; player 10 (or less) players
For GW22: Richarlison, Silva → Arnautovic, Son (Free)

If Option A, who would be the mid I take a punt on?

    DDG Elliot

    Jones Otamendi Christensen Mee Robertson

    Hazard Salah Sterling RLC Gross

    Kane Firmino Wilson

Save FT? Thinking of Hazard & Gross - > Alli/Eriksen & Lanzini/Arnautovic for the double.

Only the fact that we do not know the other fixtures yet.

I'd bring in Lingard. If you have Richarlison, I'd keep for this week.

Wasted mine early last year with Aguero. Worked out then that the way to minimise risk in the later DGWs was to make sure you have and captain the player your rivals are most likely to TC (last year it was Sanchez IIRC). That way you get 2/3 of their score, and with BB you can cover the rest.

    7. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years

In all honesty, Kane @ Swansea and v West Ham couldn't be much better. In terms of fixtures it's almost ideal.

The fact that the games are 2 days apart is a slight negative but both teams will be equally affected. Adrian is great at saving penalties (saved 5 of his last 16) but Kane is good at scoring them and there probably won't be one anyway.

I have a small reservation in that Kane just scored 2 hat-tricks and it's hard to imagine a third in quick succession. But that's as much me being superstitious as anything. Fact is there is a degree of luck involved in playing the TC, same as there is with any captaincy pick. You can try to mitigate that but you can't eliminate it.

There are too many chips for the DGW period anyway so to use one early will be beneficial. I think a Kane TC in GW22 is almost an automatic decision to be honest. Unless you want to gamble on a lot of TCs going down (as they did with Aguero last year). Because a lot will be played, that's for sure.

    Really need to address Niasse.

Worth a -4 for the following if Sane doesn't haul tonight?:

    OUT: Sane and Niasse
    IN: D Silva and Depoitre

Alternative would be a 5.0 or cheaper forward. I also have Sterling.

Might only be a -2 hit in effect as I have Ogbonna, Kane and Mbemba too.

Sane to Silvia is totally wasteful, please don't do that.

The simplest thing to do is take away Niasse and buy Quaner.

If you hate Sane that much, suggest to bring in Lingard, and upgrade Mbemba to a useful defender

Thanks - don't hate Sane at all (although a few points tonight would be nice) - just squeezing any money I can out of my squad.

You are right - I could stick with Niasse or go for Quaner or Crouch if I need to. No need to take a hit..

Getting nervous at this rank lol.

5 players left, hopefully can push into the top 100. Zaha and Aguero huge differentials, so hope Kun starts tonight!

Would have been playing RLC if it wasn't for The Fantasy Fraud and his "fake news" about Niasse possibly starting for Everton lol

Thoughts on this team? I got 2 fts.

    De Gea Myhill
    Alonso Kenny Dunk (Zanka) (Ogbonna)
    Hazard KDB Sterling Salah Pogba
    Bobby DCL (Quaner)

Pogba to Lingard or do you think that's just points chasing?
Shoud I start Zanka for Kenny, Dunk or DCL?
Who to captain between Bobby, Hazard, and Salah?

I would advise people to think twice before loading up on Westham defence just cuz they have a dgw. They have regressed defensively greatly over last two matches conceding big chances and goals like there is no tomorrow. Granted it may give you 1-2 points more but better take hit to get Eriksen/Son+Alli+Kane for Swa/wham/Eve/soton than be tied with wham defence like I have been with watford just cuz of 'fixtures'

I'm going to be honest. When in form, VVD is getting towards the level of Vertonghen. But when out of form, he's bang level with Michael Keane

Kane only last month said his goal is the spend the rest of his career at Spurs, when did he say he'd be interested in RMA? Not saying he hasn't said that before, genuinely curious, players often contradict themselves/their views change over time.

Is this team good to go? Help is appreciate. Thank you!

    deGea (Speroni)
    Christensen, Otamendi, Robertson, Kenny (Ogbonna)
    Salah, Sterling, Coutinho, Lingard (Loftus-Cheek)
    Morata, Calvert-Lewin (Kane)

1 free tranfer, 103.1 TV and 0.0 in the bank.

I am worried about the game time of some players. But I am glad that my wildcard was not too bad (84 points with Sterling and Otamendi to go).

    A) Save FT & get Kane, Son + Arnie - 4pts week after
    B) Get playing defender this GW & get Kane + Son/Eriksen/Alli -4pts week after

Looking at it from a statistical point of view, why doesn't FPL Discovery only take a sample of 20,000 for the stats for outside the top 10k? I can't imagine it would be that much more effort to make the sample size bigger and I think it would be far more representative with a larger sample size given that the population size is increasing year on year. 5.6m people this year.

    1. Differentiator
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Nah. It's already super accurate. Essentially, once you get to a certain level, your sample will approximate the population (i.e. all players) more and more closely.

      1. The Big Fella
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

It is very accurate but surely, as each year the population gets bigger, the sample size of 20k becomes relatively smaller and so less accurate in correlation with that?

    2. Hazz
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

What matters is the quality of the sample; not so-much the size. Sure with a larger sample there is a bigger chance of 'catching' more variations, but if your usual sample contains a good variety of scores, the 'average' calculated will still be more representative.

      1. The Big Fella
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Of course but if it is a randomly selected sample every week then you could have 20k homogenous teams just as easily as 20k heterogenous ones. Or a mixture of the two in varying degrees.

Guys is Adrian a good idea?

He's now conceded 6 goals in 2 premier league matches and the DGW would be a perfect excuse bring Hart back in.

    1. Kenneth Tang
      • 12 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Adrain is nailed. Without him, could concede a lot more at BOU game. The performance of Hart at Carling Club was average, which double confirm Moyes to stick with Adrain

    2. The Big Fella
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

Not sure. I have him and sold Elliot to bring him in. The games after Spurs are pretty good and Adrian earns save points (despite the battering this week, he still got me 3 points). Unless I am going to be investing 5m+/- or more on a keeper, that is probably the best I am going to get at the cheap end of the GKs. Paying more doesn't even guarantee that as I am sure DDG owners will attest to at the moment.
