Scout Notes – Alli Runs Riot

Dele Alli fires a brace to silence Stamford Bridge as Harry Kane’s return sends Fantasy managers back to the drawing board.

A superb second-half performance from Spurs saw them run out 3-1 winners over Chelsea on Sunday, as their “traditional” Fantasy midfield pair – Christian Eriksen and Alli – inflicted the damage.

Before Alli’s decisive intervention, it was Eriksen who had equalised Alvaro Morata‘s opening goal on the stroke of half-time.

The Dane’s sublime dipping effort came from a Ben Davies pass and was his first goal since Gameweek 25, taking him to eight for the campaign.

Alli then took over, first smartly converting a chipped Eric Dier through-ball, then firing home from a saved Son Heung-min shot.

A bit part player for England over the break, Alli is now showing compelling form on the domestic stage.

Sunday’s brace meant that he has returned three goals and two assists from his last three Gameweeks, having produced just a pair of assists in seven previous to that point.

That dry spell means that Alli has remained a relative differential, found in just 11.7% of squads. Meanwhile, Eriksen is owned by 14.1% of managers.

Their ownership has suffered as a result of Son’s form in recent Gameweeks, with the South Korean heading into Sunday’s match as the most signed midfielder.

Over 174,000 managers swooped for Son ahead of the Chelsea clash with Spurs’ two Double Gameweeks in mind.

He came out of Sunday with just an assist, a somewhat controversial one, with his shot taking a touch off Marcos Alonso before being turned into Alli’s path by Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

While that kept Son’s Fantasy stock simmering, the return of Harry Kane could have an impact on his potential over the remaining Gameweeks.

Kane returns for Double Gameweeks

The England striker was a shock inclusion in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad to make the bench at Stamford Bridge.

He was eventually introduced for the final 16 minutes but will surely now start in the Gameweek 33 trip to Stoke City.

More significantly, he will be available to us as a Double Gameweek 34 asset for matches against Manchester City (home) and Brighton (away).

His return will likely shift Son back to a role on the flank which, in turn, will mean that his start could be challenged by Erik Lamela.

Son’s form should maintain his berth for now but the Korean’s minutes may well be in question over the final three Gameweeks, including the potential Double Gameweek 37.

Kane was sold by 610,000 managers ahead of Saturday’s deadline, who will now surely consider reversing that decision.

Those who activated the Wildcard ahead of Gameweek 32 will now either have to plan two transfers to acquire him for Gameweek 34, or have the funds available to make the move in one swoop.

A four-point hit is an alternative and, arguably, this could be justified early to capture Kane’s potential against Stoke City.

The other option, of course, is to ignore Kane and stick with Romelu Lukaku as the Double Gameweek big-hitter up front.

Kane is already the most signed player ahead of Gameweek 33 with over 30,000 snapping him up in the last 24 hours.

With a relatively modest ownership of just 1.4 million, the striker could potentially be a factor that splits active managers for the Double Gameweek. He will be a prime candidate for the captaincy among his owners, particularly if Man City have sealed the title before their trip to Wembley Stadium.

Not for the first time this season, then, Kane provides us with a dilemma as the Fantasy Football community ponders a number of potential strategies.

Chelsea Humbled

Sunday’s defeat could prove catastrophic for Chelsea’s top four ambitions and potentially knock on to their Fantasy prospects from this point on.

Willian boasted four goals and three assists from his previous six starts heading into Sunday’s contest. That was enough to tempt 133,000 managers to bring him in ahead of two Double Gameweeks to come.

He again outperformed team-mate Eden Hazard for goal threat by three shots to zero, with the latter relying on his six chances created to catch the eye.

But the pair were ultimately contained by the Spurs defence, with Morata’s goal – from a Victor Moses assist – the only Blues points on offer.

Hazard now has just a single assist in four league outings as his modest 401,000 ownership continues to dwindle.

Alonso is also struggling to justify his hefty price tag.

Chelsea have kept just a single clean sheet in their previous seven Gameweeks, while the Spaniard is without a goal or an assist since Gameweek 22 (seven starts).

Now eight points behind Spurs in fourth, there is real concern that the Blues’ season will drift with the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton becoming the focus.

That could severely damage the prospect of Willian and Alonso over the forthcoming Double Gameweeks, and may be reflected in Wildcards played ahead of Gameweek 33.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Player consistency is super important in football. Whilst "class is permanent" as Danny Murphy says, if you're only seeing that class on few occasions, you do not have a top player.

Consistency comes from personality and attitude, something Alli is considerably lacking in. Can he be relied upon in a World Cup?

He has the fire. A fire you'd find throughout the likes of Italy in tournaments. Even Spain in their million passes phase had a couple of them littered in the team. A team of fresh faced nice consistent boys needs it. Even if he comes off the bench to ignite the team. You need him and that passion because if it's one thing I see in your team it's that lack of passion.

Yeah, great point. He's only 21 years old after all, I was being harsh. Leaving him out may be an overreaction, but using him as a bench player may push him to develop.

Alli is a 'moments' player. He comes up with something when he has done nothing all game. If you are willing to have players like that in your team then he is worth a go. I like something like this:

      Pickford
      Stones Jones Maguire
      Walker Dier Henderson Rose
      Alli
      Kane Sterling

With Sterling really playing wide left or wide right (but difficult to draw in text).

Prefer Rose. Left footed and has more pace. Rose and Walker are a good combo and easier games against Tunisia and Panama to ease him in.

Rose has played nowhere near enough games. Young had season of his life. Lingard deserves a starting spot also imo

Consistency comes with age. Young players dip in and out of form and the skill is to be able to recognise that and treat the two imposters of success and failure with equal disdain.
I have that skill and my verdict is yes, Alli you shall go to the World Cup.

I'm just chatting wham GB. Seriously though, where would he fit in the team? Southgate would have to adjust his plans again. I'm sure he'll pick him anyway.

Maybe he could play in one of the two CM slots. As we've seen with Silva and KDB this season, positional discipline and heavy closing down can turn attacking midfielders into useful defensive tools. The CBs/HB provide the pivot in Pep's system (if you count Fernandinho as a half-back). Players like Stones, Maguire, Dier and Walker are capable of performing that role!

I think England have shown they lack someone who can pick a pass in that position. That seems to be the missing piece at the moment. Not sure Alli fits that bill. For me he'd have to play in a front 2 with Kane but where's the pace there? And where does Sterling then play? Tough choices. I wouldn't play him myself. I think the only way England can have any impact is if they base the team around pace and perhaps play on the counter against the better sides. In the early games against the weaker sides, where they will have 10 behind the ball, you could play the likes of Alli. He's perfect for that set up.

                6 years, 6 months ago

Yeah, we could really do with a deep passer there for counter-attacking. Is it too late to bring Scholes out of retirement? 😀

I think Southgate is hoping our CBs are capable of those long passes when counter-attacking.

                  6 years, 6 months ago

Yep that's the problem. We still don't have players who can keep hold of the ball at that level, which is why I think we would be more suited to the counter rather than a high pressing game. Then you could play 343 in the same way Chelsea did last season with 2 defensively minded miss in the centre.

Not having a central play-maker to dictate the game has been a problem for so long 🙁 If only Carrick was English 😉

It feels like United have had similar problems going forward this season. Their main playmaker is Mata, who is struggling to dictate from out wide.

Not at the cost to the rest of your team. If Kane scores, someone has to set them up and that player will cost less. Also, he has cup semi after BHA so could well get a rest of some description after recently returning from injury. Lukaku (who I own) has a record of not hauling big, but returning consistently (seems to be back to early season, one goal a week form). Wouldn’t say that made him “essential”. Would also look at Auba (SGW but unbelievable form)

As it is i have Vardy - Auba- Firmino on top. Looking to make a swap.

You've done well, even with only captaining Salah 4 times, some were saying he has broken FPL and made the captain pick boring but these stats posted by you and others show this is far from the case.
Catching Son and Lukaku on their hauls was superb mate, well done!
I do like a maverick pick here and there and I think Auba will outscore Salah next week too...

I never doubted Auba(C) wouldn't outscore Salah(C), even had Arsenal as my final team to win in my Accy! Nice to pick up a winning bet and his points too, but man, a hatty was a whisker away!

Prob won't own him now for the rest of the season after selling him in GW30. I was also late to the Salah part so my rank suffered big time. Have been doing ok lately with my captain pick though.

No way you sold him in 30 as the figures show you MUST have captained him in 31. I'm thinking you meant 31, Sherlock was on the case and told me lol

Perhaps Klopp will mind him a little for CL, could possibly be rested v EVE.

I'm thinking the same and it did take me a while to get rid of Bobby and VVD on my WC last week but it would seem to be the way for me to go with BB34, FH35 and TC37 so I'm locked in with Auba(C) again.
Imagine the scenes when Klopp starts his rotation again.

    DDG Ryan
    Alonso Smalling Morgan Lowton Stephens
    Salah Mahrez Son Willian Gross
    Lukaku Aubameyang Barnes

    Which looks better for 34:
    A) Aub + Son -> Kane + Gudmundsson
    B) Aub + Son + Smalling -> Kane + Lingard + Christensen (-4)

If B would it make more sense to do Smalling -> Christ now or wait to ensure 2FT before the DGW?

If you are not going to captain Kane in 34, is it worth moving heaven and earth to get him?

Had set up for Kaku instead (for Auba) and captaining, holding Vardy and getting Kane in 36.

Not essential but very rare to find him at such low active ownership. Differential.
Could be a good captain this week.

This was my plan and it probably still is - but I'll have enough cash behind to swap Kaku to Kane for 36 after my 35FH. If I were choosing one of them to get in now and keep, it would be Kane.

I’m really confused between both of them. Don’t think it’s worth selling dgw players for hits to fit them both.
Thinking of going with Lingard & Kane.

If you had planned to get Kaku maybe stick with him. He’s still a pretty good option for that week.

    Any FH34ers recommend a gw33 punt who's playing 35?

Arsenal look to have the best fixtures in gw33 and gw35

Gotta be an Arsenal player. But Deeney, Wood etc. might be options. Even Zaha if you feel fruity.

Zaha could be my Mkhi replacement this week if he plays the 90 in Europa

Kane has scored 180 pts this season so far.

104 of those points (58%) have come in just 8 games (26%).

    Morning all, need help with this lot;

    DDG
    VVD Daniels Bavies
    Salah Sane Mahrez Son
    Auba Barnes Firmino

    Subs; Adrian Mawson Milivojevic Schindler

    0FT

    FH used and WC used

Do I continue to try and get DGW34 players and ignore GW35 or shall I concentrate more on the latter DGW and make sure I have enough for GW35?

Hope that makes some sort of sense. Opinions and advice much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance

Same situation. Very tough. I’m now considering just leaving team giving me 2FT for the DGW and praying kane doesn’t go mad

On a WC and going with Gross and Kane. Will switch out Gross for Lingard in GW34 though.

Yeah nice mate. Not keen on Groß for the DGW to be honest.

City reserves? Surely they want to win the title against united

That's the fans point of view though, something not always in line with the manager. But either way I don't think they will rest players.

No matter who plays for City, Lukaku will have more defensive duties than the City GK.

Reserve team? Just the Laporte Gundogan Bernardo Silva so? One of Jesus or Aguero playing? Their strength in depth is decent.

I have a fantasy football game based on the Telegraph game.

I have one transfer remaining for the rest of the season. Tuesday 10th April is the last time I can make a transfer.

Who should I swap for the rest of the season? I’m in second and have Aguero Kane Firmino up front. I was thinking Aguero to Sanchez because many won’t have Sanchez.

Your rival definitely won't have Sanchez?

EPIC FAIL- 90% sure. Only 18 transfers over the season. Sanchez is listed as a striker. Also lists how many people he is picked by and he’s owned by 7.7% of 26 teams. So basically 2 teams have him.

Find myself chuckling at “why would you have Auba for GW34, he doesn’t even have a double” comments.

No, but he’s returned 31 in the three GWs since I brought him in and plays v a Newcastle side which isn’t the best at the back (particularly v top six sides). Better option than DGW Barnes and not massively worse than a not-100% Kane who may be rested for a cup semi imo

This will currently be my DGW 34 team, with a few hits over the next week:

    Pope
    Christensen / Chilwell / Ogbonna
    Hazard / Son / Lingard / Mahrez / Salah
    Kane / Lukaku

Go with this or consider wildcard + bench boost?

    To save moving mountains.

Would you rather do Mustafi and Auba to (for 34)...
    to
    A) Tarkowski and Kane
    B) Def up to 5.5 and Kaku.

Will most likely captain the striker. B means only DDG for Man Utd, whereas I have Vert and Son.

In my company cup final on gw 34. Which of these do you prefer (can take one hit this week and have it not count):

    DDG*
    Valencia*, Robbo, XXX
    Willian*, Salah, Silva, XXX,
    XXX
    Firminio, XXX

    Auba, Sterling, Mkhi ->

    A) Lukaku, Gross, Mahrez
    B) Vardy, Mahrez, Alli

Hello guys. What are your thoughts about having Chelsea assets for the run in? CL qualification looks to be out of reach and feels like Conte will be also gone in the summer. Motivation in the league could be down and with FA Cup their only priority there could also be rotation in the league.

People with Alonso and Willian (I guess quite many who wildcarded gw32) are you planning to keep or possibly ditch for the dgw to fund the likes of Kane and Lukaku?

Frankly I wish I had avoided them actually, but the sensible thing is to see if they return to life vs West Ham and hopefully keep. It's easier for Hazard owners to ditch for funds, whereas us Willian/Alonso owners have an awkward hit to take or keep faith.

Yep, have to see how West Ham match goes but I think I could be tempted to switch one of those out come gw34
