Scout Notes – Lacazette Leaves It Late

A late Arsenal goal rush saves the day for Free Hit managers, while a Burnley forward delivers the goods to keep those without the chip in credit as well.

Eighty minutes into the Gunners’ home match with West Ham and many of the 154,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had employed their Free Hit chip were in a dark place.

As revealed by Ragabolly’s latest Metrics article, 63.9% of the top 10,000 managers playing the chip had elected to recruit Alexandre Lacazette.

The striker had been signed by 42,000, and captained by more than 100,000, with many taking advantage of the Free Hit to bring him in after coach Arsene Wenger revealed, during a press conference on Thursday, that he wanted to give run-outs to most of the side likely to play in next week’s Europa League semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid.

That was a bitter blow to those looking to cash in on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Ineligible in Europe, he’d seemed a shoo-in for domestic action, prompting major investment ahead of Gameweek 35.

He was the third most signed player ahead of Saturday’s deadline, with 201,000 making their move. Meanwhile, 221,000 captained the 14.8%-owned forward – Arsenal’s most popular player in FPL.

Wenger’s statements on Thursday changed everything, leaving those without the Free Hit chip somewhat in the lurch.

Sure enough, Lacazette started and Aubameyang was on the bench, although at 1-1 with 10 minutes to go, neither had anything to show for their troubles.

By then, the Gabon international was on the pitch as the Gunners sought to reclaim a lead given them by Nacho Monreal, only for Marko Arnautovic to equalise for the visitors.

A goal blitz then followed, with Aaron Ramsey and Lacazette, twice, putting a decidedly flattering spin on a match in which the Hammers had been competitive until their late capitulation.

Aubameyang did at least produce an assist for his owners, with Ramsey and Granit Xhaka also setting up goals in the 4-1 win.

Maximum bonus went to Lacazette as he recorded only his second double-digit return of the campaign, his 13-point total matching his previous season’s best, in Gameweek 6.

Those points, relative to Aubameyang’s tally of four, are likely to have a major impact on FPL ranks once Gameweek 35 is done.

And Lacazette’s form – four goals in as many Gameweeks, with only two of those starts – suggests he’ll continue in the main striker role despite Aubameyang’s equally strong recent showings. He’d scored four goals in his last three home matches, and six in eight Gameweeek appearances overall.

That state of affairs, and Arsenal’s next fixture away at Man United, is persuading many of those non-Free Hitters to offload Aubameyang – he’s the second most sold player ahead of Gameweek 36, as managers look to Harry Kane and Gabriel Jesus for the run-in.

Ups and downs for others

Ramsey was another vital Gameweek 35 figure.

Signed by 27,000, he was a key differential for Free Hit investors after returning to the starting XI and producing a goal and an assist, along with two bonus points, against the Hammers.

The Welsh international had four shots, three chances created and a match-high nine touches in the box in a strong attacking display.

His 12-point return was a huge boost to his 4.0% ownership, particularly when stacked against the fortunes of those who decided to use their Free Hit chip to bring in Mesut Ozil instead.

The 2.7%-owned German missed the match due to illness – as did keeper Petr Cech – and his 9.3 price tag (compared to Ramsey’s 6.8) was a high one to pay for a no-show.

Arsenal’s defenders, meanwhile, had attracted 149,000 transfers-in for the West Ham clash, with hopes high of a third consecutive home clean sheet.

But those shut-outs were their only ones in 16 Gameweeks, and it was left to goalscorer Monreal to provide a decent return among the backline.

Owned by 493,000 and signed by 68,000, the Spaniard was the most popular of those Gameweek 35 defensive acquisitions and his fifth goal of the season means he’s now just one shy of Marcos Alonso – amazing work for a man with just one strike in his five previous Premier League seasons.

Marko the man

Predictably enough, Arnautovic was West Ham’s only bright spark.

He had four shots, all in the box, and his goal from substitute Manuel Lanzini’s assist was his 10th in his last 16 Gameweek appearances.

The midfielder also has five assists from that spell and was signed by 49,000+ going into the Arsenal match as his ownership, now at 6.1%, continues to increase.

That should mean he remains the Hammers’ one tempting asset ahead of Double Gameweek 37’s trip to Leicester City and a visit from Man United.

Before that, there’s the small matter of a home match against Man City, with David Moyes’ side still requiring points to finally put their relegation fears to bed.

Arnautovic’s owners can only hope that his form will trump what are a tricky set of fixtures.

Deadlock at Stoke

Burnley assets went into their match at Stoke City well supported, particularly by managers without the Free Hit active.

And it was striker Ashley Barnes who delivered, bundling home his sixth goal in eight Gameweek starts to earn the Clarets a point and deny their hosts a precious win.

Owned by 288,080, Barnes had proved a popular target for Double Gameweek 34, although he was jettisoned or benched by many Free Hit managers ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The forward promptly punished that decision, but there were slim pickings on offer among other Burnley assets.

Kevin Long, with 45,000+ new investors, was their most signed player ahead of Gameweek 35, only for the Clarets defence to concede yet again.

They’ve kept just one clean sheet in 15 league matches in 2018 – only Brighton have a worse record in the Premier League since the turn of the year – with an assist for centre-half James Tarkowski at least providing some joy for his 5.0% ownership.

For Stoke, Xherdan Shaqiri was their most popular target in action.

He was brought in by 51,000+, with goalkeeper Jack Butland (7,700) ranking next.

The midfielder managed one shot and created three chances, but he failed to find the net for the seventh successive match, having delivered three in three prior to that.

Butland at least brought in a couple of save points in a performance that also earned him one bonus point, with the main hauls coming from goalscorer Badou Ndiaye and Mame Diouf, who provided the assist.

In truth, players from neither side are of much interest to Fantasy managers now, with their assets likely to provide bench back-up at best, or more likely replaced by Double Gameweekers for the run-in.

Goodbye Vardy, thanks for all the WKD blues. Hello Jesus! 🙂

Can I get your views on this: What scores more?

    a) Mahrez (cry) + Lingard (bri, whu) + 4 points
    b) Sterling (whu) + JAyew (bou, SOU)

Why did you write Mahrez and Sterling's GW36 fixtures and
      Lingard and JAyew's GW37 fixtures?

If I take a hit this GW for Mahrez to Sterling (a) I have another transfer to change Barnes to Ayew. If I wait til next week (b) then I play Lingard.

        What do you think?

I think B pips it for me, but Sterling is more of a rotation risk than Mahrez, I think, so bear that in mind.

can't wait until FPL is over this year to be honest

I'm having to muster loads of information about Otamendi to see if he should play the DGW

if he doesn't I'll be livid as I made the transfer last night 🙁 , wish I went Vertonghen now

yeah but I'd figured out that it was probably worth it because if neither got injured and I didn't pull the trigger, that would be an extra -4 anyway that I wouldn't want to take

ofc I could've looked at Vertonghen instead but my ML rival has him, and need to be different 😛

Not bad! The Fabianski haul must have been a nice bonus even if he stole points from Jesus. A mini-league rival actually took Fabianski out on his free hit for Pope. A good decision on paper of course - why wouldn't you? - but I'm sure he must be kicking himself now!

Got out of jail a little and still have hope of double NEW defence.
He must be well annoyed! Fabianski was a great choice though for those without FH chip as he is so cheap, great for save points and has a DGW.

Yeah Fabianski has been such a good source of points all season really - if I had him I'm sure I would've been much better off overall.

I've got Coleman tomorrow myself - let's hope for a nice boring goalless draw then!

    GW32/ 33 WCers.

Stop taking hits, wear sunscreen and remember why you picked them in the first place.

Save a transfer this week after your probably successful 35FH. The grass ain't always greener., so stick to the plan. Son, Gudmunsson, Willian, Mahrez, Zaha, Gross, Miliijovic -

bet you have a few them. All ballers and all have great fixtures. And that's just potential mids transfers.

Refrain, refrain is the name of the game. Top 10k hits will be minimal this week, imo and if you want to close ML gaps/ chase OR then reel your necks in.

Save FT. It's the business end now. You have to assume your rivals will make the mistake. NOT YOU,

It's tough, I really know .. when there are too many sugar filled sweeties to choose from and you cab only pick one.

                        Kane is Kane though.

I can't see Jesus destroying the rank in a similar singlehanded way.

7pts today for £10m. Ederson did fine in comparison.

A better penalty and that's comfortably 13 points. I'm not saying its what I think will happen but I can see scenarios where Jesus scores 8 or 9 in these last 4 if he starts all of them.

Kane could singlehanded wipe out your rank again then so!

It's the rest variable with City. I fancied Sterling big time for captain this week but went safe with Salah.

In the DGW I think Sterling is a better captaincy pick.

He's as much a forward as Jesus.

Sterling could have had a goal & two assists today.

Don't I know it. I prefer to get two in for free in 37, or even three in for a hit in that same week. I'll take any potential blow to the chin by being Cityless for a GW - over the City owners of various players = nervous team sheet wait .

Or indeed the extra city GW selection up to date info with 2 FTs in hand.

Can't disagree with anything you've said there. For me it's more a question of whether I can do better over one GW if I can make the same transfer in the second.

It all concerns city assets. All players will be rotated but the City boys are most prone to the risk in a DGW. I look at the Leicester players and think I'm odds on for better scoring from the city players if they play 3 from 4.

          Vardy>Jesus is looking irresistible.

I think saving a trade is prudent, yet spending a free trade is not necessarily ill advised. The key is to avoid the temptation to try and do a mini roster overhaul, taking multiple hits or even a single hit. Good advice, Roy.

For me the fun part of the game is transfers and a few hits with planned recouping of investment over 3 gameweeks. Slept well after getting Jesus in for Kaku last night. Will enjoy watching Liv on Tue and awaiting An field Express to see whether to get Mo back or Raheem, probably the latter for -4.

I won't go crazy on hits for sure, but I definitely want to double up on City attack for the double.

If their game yesterday is anything to go by, they will smash it till the end, and they have the fixtures to score 3-5 every game. By comparison Leicester, Chelsea and ManU look languid with nothing to play for.

Sure, there will be rotation among City and even Jesus is not safe, since Pep has played with a false nine before, but neither are Willian, Son and Lingard. They will probably play one game each during the double.

Mahrez is the only one worth keeping since he'll definitely play all games, but he's in such poor form that I don't know what to do with him.

You have to find the right balance between going crazy with hits and doing nothing.

      I'm sorry but I can't agree with you. Here's my WC team;
      DDG
      Morgan Long Robertson Lowton Alonso
      Son Alli Mahrez Willian Groß
      Lukaku Vardy Barnes

      Lukaku to Kane GW36.
You're telling me to make only one other move for DGW37. I have no City and that defence is horrible. Morgan, Willian, Son, Alli might not even start both games

That would be fine if I didn't have Bailly, Alonso and Morgan stinking out my team, likely none will start (Alonso won't) and quite a bit of money locked in them. Add to that no Man City coverage.

Hits required this week, but with an eye on DGW37 so hopefully none are required next week.

      mainly agree with this.
My team this week looks fine (happy to bench Alonso & risk Salah atm).
Want to roll an FT and be able to do -4 next week if necessary.
2 key issues will be :Pep presser on whether CIty continue to field strongest line-ups or rotate a bit
: how Spurs respond against Watford after cup defeat

Good advice that I did consider last night when I quickly did Lukaku/Mahrez to Jesus/Sterling for -4 points.

Noticed that we are about the same rank this year so will be a quick test of the patience vs. trigger happy strategy 🙂 To be fair, I basically did the my quick transfers to avoid thinking too much about transfers (I am on my FPL detox season), so even if I get lucky I still think your patience strategy probably is better in the long run.

I think this is likely what I'm going to do unless Salah isn't playing in GW36.

Still have a little bit of faith in the likes of Son and Willian.

Not having any City players is a worry though - they could go big, they're already rising in price and I'll definitely want them for GW37. Tempted to take the hits now.

Mahrez to Sterling as the free transfer this week? Thats what I'm looking at, at present. Gives some city cover this week at least. Then will reassess for GW37 and add more City then. If you compare Mahrez and Sterling stats it is like night and day over the last 3 or 4 games!

          0.1m off that move unfortunately.

Could get Silva instead but Sterling is the one I want

problem with City is you almost have to bring in 3 "attackers" and hope 2 get decent minutes. Non-Lukaku owners probably looking at a -8 to release the funds to afford 3 City attackers.
Still not beyond the realms of possibility that Pep could even go a game with a false 9.
