How FFS helped Paul Gee finish in FPL top two

Membership with Fantasy Football Scout helped Paul Gee to his “greatest Fantasy Premier League achievement” this season as he finished second in the whole world.

On a dramatic final day, the 33-year-old electrical engineer from Leeds was just 17 minutes away from winning the FPL title before a Josh King goal robbed him of a clean sheet double up on Burnley’s defence.

However, Paul admitted he has very few complaints after 2017/18 proved his best ever campaign, with FFS playing a big part.

Tools for Success

“The website for the last eight years has been my number one tool to success,” Paul told FFS.

“I’ve achieved three top 5,000 finishes and have never finished below 50,000 in the time I have been a member.

“Finishing second in the world and as the top FFS member felt great. It is my greatest FPL achievement, which I didn’t think would be possible for me.

“I put a lot of effort into it, from planning my team in Gameweek 1 right the way through to Gameweek 38.

“Just like a lot of other guys on FFS, I love reading all the opinions on every player and tactic. They all share a common interest with me.

“A lot of my mates mock me for how serious I take it. I know the fixture lists off-by-heart. So I have to thank the ‘ROFL bois’ and my wife for not killing me this year!”

The Leeds United fan cited FFS tools such as the season ticker and expected goals table, as well as having discussions with other members, as the key reasons behind his success in 2017/18.

“The forums on their own are so valuable,” he explained.

“Some of the guys created spreadsheets for defensive rotations and this proved a key part of my success this season.

“This meant I would never take a hit on a cheap defender. You have to use your squad and not take a hit early on. If you get your rotation right you don’t need to take hits.

“I like to try and get a good rotation with the fifth midfielder and the third striker and play 3-5-2 or my favourite formation 3-4-3.

“I always like to use the goals imminent table too, if I couldn’t make my mind up about a transfer.

“I also like to play the fixtures, so a key part of being an FFS member is the season ticker. I can’t explain how important this has been to me.

“Most importantly, for me, the key part of FFS is the community. There are a lot of guys putting so much effort into it such as creating tables discussing tactics, which are invaluable. So maybe I should share all my prizes with you, or maybe not!”

Final Day Drama

However, all the research in the world could not prepare Paul for a rollercoaster of emotions that was the final day of the season. Having made just one change to his side, signing Mohamed Salah for Dele Alli, it was an inauspicious start to Gameweek 38.

He said: “I use Twitter to get the team sheets from their respective club account and I knew straight away that Gabriel Jesus and Pascal Gross were benched.

“I felt totally gutted because the two transfers I had in mind for the hit that I didn’t do was Jesus to Alexandre Lacazette for a differential and Gross to Wilfried Zaha.

“I went through all my opponents’ teams and saw that Bharat Dhody (then leader) had lots of players out and, crucially, he had no bench with Ashley Barnes injured. I thought Faisal Idris in second place had it won.

“I was, however, aware that Yusuf Sheikh had the Triple Captain chip left and I was pretty sure he would give Salah the armband.

“I just thought that with my advantage of about 12 points I would be able to hold him off with no points hits, but he played the game very well.”

Paul ended 2017/18 with 2504 points after a Gameweek score of 72, which proved just eight short of eventual winner Yusuf from Tanzania. It could have been ever better for him though, and, at one stage, he was top of the pile.

“I spent all afternoon refreshing the squads of the other teams,” Paul revealed.

“At first I wasn’t that nervous. I honestly felt that with looking at the teams, after all the players that had been rotated, that I had no chance making up the points.

“The first goal that went in for me was really early on with Jamie Vardy getting the opener for Leicester at Wembley.

“My Dad and I went mad! That’s when I started dreaming of glory.”

The Burnley Defence

“By the second half I knew that the Burnley defence was key to me doing really really well. Getting first place would ride on their clean sheet.

“I knew I was going to be doubling up since my Gameweek 32 Wildcard. At that time Burnley were keeping a only few clean sheets, so I wasn’t so confident at the start of the Gameweek because of their recent defensive form.

“By the time it got to the 73rd minute it was, unbelievably, still on, and I really started to feel the heat then.

“I knew at the back of my mind I was winning the whole thing. I had worked out that my overall position was first place, but I refused to look at the game by that point. I think the wife, thought I was losing it I was that nervous.”

It all changed in the 74th minute when Callum Wilson equalised for Bournemouth, wiping out eight of Paul’s points and robbing Tarkowski and Lowton of a clean sheet.

“I was devastated,” Paul revealed. “But in a way I was still happy because at that point I knew I had clinched a top three finish, with a bit of mental maths. I had seen that Faisal and Bharat (the previous top two) were having absolute stinkers by their high standards.

“Very soon after losing the clean sheet, Vardy scored his second against Spurs. I knew he was my ultimate differential and he was doing his job.”

The signing of Vardy on his Wildcard in Gameweek 32 was another decision influenced by FFS. Going into the final day of the season, he was one of the differentials Paul hoped would claim him the title.

Key Decisions

He explained: “My plan had been to try and push for third, as that’s where the FPL prizes started. Looking at all the other teams above, over-all they seemed a lot stronger than mine.

“I had to rely on the differentials I had over the others, such as Vardy and Marko Arnautovic.

“I saw Vardy’s record away against the top sides in the league and this was backed up by an article I read on FFS, which helped me a lot.”

Paul was one of just two managers in the top five who was able to sign Salah back into his side for Gameweek 38 without having to take a points hit, which made a big difference for him in the end.

“Re-signing Salah was my plan all along,” Paul revealed.

“I knew a lot of the guys would go all out to spend every last penny, forgetting about the final crucial Gameweek 38. If I went with Salah I knew I would captain him. I knew that captaining him could be a slight differential because the other guys might try to be too clever with their choices.

“I was aware there was only two of us in the top five who could get him hit free, so I would make four points up straight away. It turns out it really was crucial that I didn’t take a hit because I beat Bharat into second by four points.”

Glad Burnley worked for him, I missed the boat and got a grand total of 1 clean sheet from Burnley all season.
For their prices I’ll definitely consider more next season.

Not think there's a chance of 5.0 across the board for Burnley defenders? And if so would you still consider paying that?

Of the personal opinion that UEL may take its toll on them next season and they'll struggle.

Yeah, I try to stay away from the UEL teams, particularly with thin squads. They could be good value but it'll be even more about playing the fixtures next season with Burnley

I think Burnley defenders could be a solid pick at 5.0, which is what they will surely be.

I am definitely interested in Palace and PVA. They seem to be pretty solid under Hodgson.

      I'd pay £5.5 for PVA.

Dependent on fixtures. I’d like to see him at 5 since their record wasn’t great and other options may be 4.5 in the squad (bikassa, Ward and Tomkins) Sakho and him at 5.0 would make sense.

I love the transfer window around international tournaments - so many big ins and outs (Suarez leaving, Sanchez joining etc).

As an Liverpool fan, I’m looking forward to it even more. Consecutive champions league qualification is key to attract big players, as well as the final to look forward to.

With the arrival of Keita, it might even prompt a formation change for Liverpool too (a la West Ham game where Liverpool won 4:1)

Karius (or another keeper: Oblak? Allisson?),
Taa, Matip/Lovren/New centre half, VVD, Robertson,
    Keita, Henderson/New DM,
Mane, OX/Fekir (really think he’d fill that Coutinho gap, and actually think it could go through)
    Salah, Firmino up top.

I think another quality CB is a big one, although you could say that about a lot of teams.

Cover for Firmino maybe? In the same mold as Firmino?

That’s where I think fekir comes in. Quite similar in mound as an attacking mid that can play further up and has the strength to bring others in.

Potentially a bit more game time for Solanke and Ings but agree, Firmino is so important and unique it would be difficult to cover him.

Think you're getting Fekir and Butland. Would probably need a CB to partner VVD and some depth in midfield to take on City.

Quality but I’m not convinced he will, why leave as a top player at a top club that dominates the league?

Think Klopp likes to turn good players great, and Dyb is already at that level

Karius has come on well this season, but there is still room for improvement. Allisson would be an upgrade to De Gea levels.

Blessed with right backs, Gomez can play there or at centre back too. Lovren is much better alongside VVD. The best move here though would be to sign Alderweireld - he is relatively cheap, available, the best centre back in the league, and has the benefit of damaging one of your rivals.

They're a tad light in CM if Can leaves and with Ox injured. Some cover here would be useful.

Lallana being back fit would relive some pressure on Salah/Mane. I get the impression Klopp would like a backup to Bobby who plays in a similar manner. Possibly Solanke could be trained to play in this way, but if not, a replacement would be needed. Is Origi back from loan this summer?

Supposedly Origi is back but it hasn’t exactly been a wonderful loan.

Backup for Firm is a must but as I said he’s so unique.

Agree with the Aldy and VVD partnership, did think it might happen but wages probably an issue and can see him going to a top top club abroad.

Issue won’t alisson I have is I haven’t seen much and only have a few games (plus the champions league) to go on. Really like Oblak, a top top keeper would be a godsend.

In terms of CM, there is Hendo, Milner, Ox, Lallana, Keita, Wijnaldum and TAA if necessary, so maybe one more if we play 433. If it’s 4222 then I think that would be a lot of players for a few spots. Hence why I think Fekir can do that Coutinho role and shift around where required.

Lots of ifs, buts and interpretations.

GK - Mignolet is leaving. So either buy a clear number 1 to demote Karius or a clear 2 number with experience to nurture him. I would love for us to go all out for Oblak/Alisson but we probably won't.

CB - We need a top end CB to a partner that beautiful Dutch fella. Matip and Lovren have proven time and again that they are a) not good enough, b) can't be relied on and c) don't learn from their mistakes. My top choice would be Koulibaly.

CDM/DLP - Looks like Emre is off sadly. Any one of Ndidi, Diawara, Jordinho, or Neves would do me.

CM/CAM - I think we could do with another body in midfield too. Links with James Maddison but I wouldn't mind Loftus Cheek for this role.

Coutinho replacement - Nabil Fekir is the one we're after apparently. Can play up front too so might diminish our need for a back up to that beautiful Brazilian fella with shining white teeth. Otherwise we would need a striker too.

Wide player - We need back up to Salah and Mane, but a back up with quality. Any one of Leon Bailey, Pulisic, Zaha, Mahrez etc would do me.

And most of all, Naby Keita is turning up. 😎

      So, a GK+CB+CDM+CM+Coutinho replacement+Winger.

Was wondering when this would draw your attention!

Agreed on every point, especially the wide player situation. Time and time again we’ve taken off Manr or Salah and our threat has dropped. Bailey or Pulisic linked and I’d be happy with either.

The list looks long, but I don’t think it’s going to be that bad. Not that we will get everyone required!

I'd settle for any of the aforementioned to be honest! Just want a clear improvement on what we have, or at least more competition for places. We are a 14/15 man squad - dunno how we've reached the CL final with these resources.

Very fair. Just don't see Ndidi leaving myself - not quite the finished product yet, has made no intention of leaving, and aside from release clause situations Leicester have been terrible to poach from (Drinkwater is arguable I guess, I think Leicester won that one in the long run though)

Didi has the potential but I’d like to see another season, not sure he’d justify 40 million thrown at him.

Also don’t want Mahrez, don’t feel he would fit our style, and I’d get annoyed watching the lack of pressing.

I believe Karius can do the job. Bring back Reina as no.2/ mentor and sell Mignolet and Ward.

Is Klopp planning on utilising Gomez as a CB? If not, the competition will be fierce as a lot of clubs looking for quality at CB.

      Jorginho.
      Keita.
      Fekir.
Martial - he's quality and deserves to be freed from Dinosaurinho.

No chance of martial, but a good chance of another CB and Gomez getting cup runs. Don’t see Jorginho and in all honesty not sure I’d want him. In that Napoli midfield I think nearly all of them are more desirable, and worth the cost.

Gk: try to get allisson or oblak. Otherwise just stick with Karius. Must upgrade or stand put. Buying similiar strength butland is just muddying the waters again.

Defence: very happy with taa, robbo and vvd. Move gomez into cb. Try Buy sessegnon cause he can cover robbo and mane.

Midfield: have to buy jorginho. This is a priority signing. We need a dm who will be disciplined and protect the defence as well link play to our forwards. Keita will be exceptional alongside ox/ hendo/ gini / lallana

Forwards: try and buy fekir. He is similiar to firmino and can cover 5 positions.

      Signings in order of importance

      Must get:

      1. Jorginho
      2. Fekir

      Bonus if funds available
      3. Allison/ oblak
      4. Sessegnon

I really don’t see Jorginho as the answer to our problems, I think there are much better options. I know Napoli have done fantastically but he was a cog in my eyes rather then that midfielder we absolutely require.

I also don’t see us buying Sessengnon unless he fits into that Fekir role. He wants games so we have to play him. Could work and I’d really like it but I think he will stick without fulham for another year.

I disagree. A cog is exactly what we need. Someone disciplined in front of defence to protect and link. We have 7 attacking players including wing backs. Vvd and partner need a shield in our system. It is the missing piece.

Worth remembering their season starting back 4 was
      Moreno Matip Lovren Gomez,
      and they finished with playing
      Robertson Van Dijk Lovren Alexander-Arnold.

Arguably, they don’t need a new defence - they found it by March or April!

Good points raised in this thread. Essentially we have a strong first 11 but the bench is quite weak.

To improve Migsy, Lovren, Lallana and Ings all need to be binned and upgraded.

Ox is out till Nov so a new AM is needed. Fekir would be ideal. Then a proper backup striker and a backup to Mane and Salah. Another CM/DM to replace Can and a CB are must haves. Think we can make do with Karius and Ward if an elite keeper is not available this summer.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Being a FFS member clearly helped Paul Gee this season.

    What about other members?

What tools did you use most often? What do you like the most?

What tools do you use least often?

What improvements would you like to see?

Are there any examples where the FFS Members tools have been helpful.
EG - for me in GWK 38 I used the comparison tool to compare Cresswell, TAA, Van Dijk, Robertson and PVA. The latter two came out top across lots of metrics and I went for the Livepool full back in the end.

Playing FPL for 6 years, never out of top 70k with two 5k finishes, but loose my mini-league 3 year in a row. That`s why I decided definetely to become a member for 2018/2019 season , when it will opened and how much it costs straight from opening?

The threads are the best tool here great debate and insight by some managers is my favorite thing about the site imo.

Since the season ended the number of posts has dropped dramatically but the quality of discussion has also risen dramatically from the barrage RMTs and such.

I have seen the agreements for and against but i am coming around to a members discussion area where RMTs are outlawed so that a better level of discussion is attained.

Key reason (apart from supporting Mark's retirement at 55) I pay my membership year on year.

      Key ones:
Team stats (for defences I'm thinking of investing in, or for evaluating captain choices and the strength/weakness of the defences theyre facing)
Player stats - uncovering key gems over the last 6
Comparison tool - so helpful in final "who do I buy" decisions
RMT for planning during DGW season as rough guide for what to expect, and which combos work.

Don't use public stat / ref / projections at all, primarily because the above seems to give me what I need anyway 🙂

Best use case is probably deciding the City midfielder to bring in back in GW17 - noticed Dilva overindexing in terms of SoT, rather than the usual creativity he's noted for, so bought him in over Ras for a 16 pointer. Sadly had to make the change due to DS' (gladly now resolved) personal circumstances, but still a big example of how I use them.

Comparing similar players helps me to make a decision, but due to variance in performances and points outputs, I would say that it probably didn't give me an edge. It's great to help with indecision though.

That said, I'd imagine I'd see a lot more success with it if I used it more than 10 times a season.

I paid for it and then never used it.

The forum here is great as are the scoutcasts but I was reliant on them only despite having the tools available to do my own research.

I know that pre season is covered in articles however I think the pre season could do with a special, members area tab, all of its own.

Particularly with game time and some insight in to thr match fitness for the coming season.

The start is the trickiest to pick a decent team imo and so some insight into the readiness of players and there pre-season heat maps for example might give us a leg up. It may even identify a mid being played as a forward or a mid now being used in defence for example.

Because RMTs are such a key part of this site, there should be a proper RMT widget that people can either link to from a post or preferably embed in posts.

I was thinking of the concept behind it a year or two ago, it'd basically be a box with 15 places in in laid out as
      1
      5
      5
      3
and then you could type the names into each box and it'd be an auto-complete of all FPL player names.

Then when others view the post they'd see the box with all the 15 squad names in and each name would have a little tick or cross by it that you could mark that you agree with the player selection or disagree.

Then you could maybe hover over the names and see the stats of how many have ticked and how many have crossed.

You could then have mini poll widgets for the style 'which player A, B,C' style posts with similar stats shown for which logged in users chose which option.

This was my second year as a member - last year I used the tracks a lot as I wanted to get familiar with football statistics. I had decent success with everything.

This year I went through periods where I didn't log in for weeks at a time - other than the ticker and using RMT a bit just for fun (because RMT can't account for lots of nuance), I barely used it. This coincided with discovering understat & xG, which is almost solely what I've used this season.

Most tools aren't helpful, and I don't mean that as a criticism to FFS at all. Comparison tool for example, is a giant waste of time IMO.

Ticker us best feature that FFS has, though I almost never change the values - it's just a nice visual for identifying good/bad blocks of fixtures.

I use RMT quite a bit. Not to make final decisions but to gauge whether an idea is feasible/worth exploring. E.g triple transfers and hits - is it realistic to expect a return on investment in only one or two weeks.

I don't use it to judge my team as a whole.

I do, however use it as my first point of call for captain and bench order decisions. Again, it's not the final factor, but it helps me gauge which are more obvious option, or consider why their expected score is particularly high or low.

I use the comparison tool most.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I'd like to be able to download the stats more easily so I can play around with them in Excel. For example, the number of points (and the breakdown) Lukaku scored in each game this season.

Also, more analysis pieces would be good to answer questions like: which really makes more difference, on average, form or fixtures? based on the performance of FPL teams this season, how much money should you have on your bench?

I've been a member for years now, but don't really use the members area all that much. However, there are a few things which are super useful.

1)Fixture ticker and ability to break it down into sets of 2-3 GWs as needed.
      2) Captain Sensible
      3) Big Numbers

All 3 helped significantly in my decisions this season, and I ended 300th in the world.

However, even in previous years when we didn't have these articles, it was worth becoming a member. It's not that expensive, and more of a thank you for a lot of the incredible free content FFS publish.

This season being my third as a member, my worst season of the three. Woeful overall 285,777 cemented by captain Sterling in gw 38. A season where i tried different things, captaincy on Richarlison 2 points in gw 10, Morata 2 points in gw 14 and Sane 4 points in gw 15, being my most laughable moments.
Didn't take a hit until gw 18, taking - 28 in total by the end.
I found myself taking notice of stats more than going with my gut instinct. Putting it down to a bad season, with no luck.
I guess this season has changed alot with more players and free information out to the masses. As a member i would like to see more Exclusivity, to make me feel im paying for that little extra info over rest of the players.
Would be nice to see guys on Scoutcast with less template teams as each other. Have some differential, play more maverick like and see where they finish. All seem to play dullard through out the season. I do find it entertaining trying to guess who they're putting the captaincy on each week.
More often than not, different to who they named at end of the scoutcast.
The main functions i use season ticker, team profiles, comparison tool, rate my team players. One problem i noticed this season, when you click onto for example: players stats - forward - goal threat - pen tchs to find what player has the most pen tchs. All works fine on my lap top and puts the players in order, but doesn't work on both my I phone and I pad. Very frustrating when im at work trying to look at the stats.
All in all FFS does a good job. Hopefully will see more exclusive info and will continue my membership next season.
      Many Thanks to FFS Team.

The main tool i would really like, is the ability to put my team id into stats tables, to instantly see stats of the team i currently have.

I use the stats tables pretty much weekly, i have around 4 or 5 tables i turn to quite a lot and find them all really helpful.

How important is a fast start?!

During the course of this season, I've often thought about the impact of getting off to a bad start can have on your overall rank. Personally, I found it felt very difficult to make meaningful ground at any point this year.

However, having had a quick look at the top 25, and how quickly they established themselves in the top 10k this season makes interesting reading.

On average, the top 25 managers locked themselves inside the top 10k from GW11 onwards - some dabbled in and out, but this study just looks at the moment them made it in and never left.

2nd place Paul Gee is one of the outliers, only locking himself into the top 10k from GW17 onwards.
Meanwhile 24th place Lejuan Basson made an early move GW4 and never looked back.

Hope for budding FPL winners for next season!

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years

I like to think I choose what I believe to be the best strategy/combination of players, which means that it's more dissimilar to any template than the average team, more often than not.

But there could be an element of being different for the sake of it that affects my decisions, even though I think that's a poor tactic in general.

            • 8 Years

So basically I try to remove ownership from my decision making entirely, but I could be that it swings a little in the other direction as I choose less common players/formations etc.

But that could be good, because one season it will work and give me a great start, even if I have to suffer years of terrible starts and catch-up 😀

GW 2 I was nearly 2 mil OR.

By GW-16 I had solidified myself in to a top 55k position.

Between GW-16 and 38 was where I found progress the hardest. I think once you get to first 50k, generally speaking, most know what they are doing so making ground was hard work.

By the time GW-19 templates have formed and teams are showing their general season long form. After that it's all up hill. If you haven't got a decent rank by then you aren't gonna imo, and big climbs in OR will be hard.

On the flip side I started 2seasons ago terribly (2 X 4 million+ gw ranks in first 2 weeks) and feel like I spent all season recovering. Managed to get to 65k in the end after an incredibly strong finish but most of the season was super slow progress. Starting strong matters.

It's not everything but it is important.
You can hit top 10k with a mediocre or bad start
but hitting top 1k is made much more likely with a fast start.
      This season I was 1300 GW1
      last seasin I was 17k GW1
made things much more relaxed in the knowledge that I had nearly guaranteed top 10k unless I went hits crazy and stayed a little bit patient.

top 1k certainly involves a fast start, lots of saving 2 FTs and certainly a bit of luck helps too..

Very important. With 5M players need to hit the ground running, if want a top 100 spot most things need to go right. Even then it is difficult.
Best finish I had was 35th and even then was about 100 behind the leader, and Gw 1 was in top 5k and never left it.

Trouble is a fast start is not easy to nail down. We spend all summer analysing every little thing and most end up having to wildcard after Three weeks

GW1 8198 OR "protected" me against 2 horrors in GW2 (3m exactly same side!!) and GW5 (4.3m). Dropped me to 134k but was able to hit top 10k GW 10, top 500 GW16,, top 100 GW32.

Also key was that it enabled me to hold 1st WC until GW14 (which was only about 5 or 6 changes - gone from transfer history so can't be exactly sure).
Like Triggerlips got as high as 47 OR but even then was 70 odd pts behind Bharat at the time

      GW16 rank for this year's top 10

      1st - 22nd
      2nd - 10,143rd
      3rd - 5th
      4th - 23rd
      5th - 23,483rd
      6th - 664th
      7th - 3,677th
      8th - 14th
      9th - 1,837th
      10th - 31st

This shows we should take great encouragement that a top, top finish isn't out of the question even with a slowish start.
It also shows that getting a fast start means you're very hard to dislodge!

During the course of the season we were spoiled with leaked team news mainly from Anfield Express with a few cameos from Powell.

I like any other manager will take any information i get and try to use it to my advantage but having this kinda of info smacks of insider trading and is not in any way fair to the majority of casuals that make up the game.

I am in favor of a level playing field and think this info should probably be kept under wraps for the good of the game in future.

There should be some kind of onus on clubs to keep the team sheets secret until the deadline and keep us all guessing which is part of the fun of the game imo.

disagree the more info we have the bigger advantage we have

I would like to see each PL club announce their team 24hrs before each game. Why not they do it in other sports?

I would have no real problem with teams been published 24 hours before the deadline just as long as they were all released at the same time.

I don't see any inherit advantage to being well informed. If there was then couldn't using stats to find the best players also be seen as cheating or gaining an unfair advantage?

Of its posted on here especially on here, a completely open and publoc forum, then that's the loss of the lazy or those that simply don't have time.

Stats are freely available to any manager that is interested in them and that is a level playing field which is fair play.

When a small percentage of managers have insider information and are acting on it to their own advantage it is just not fair on the average Joe who is not in the know and not in the spirit of the game.

In fairness FFS have set the bar high on such info been published here and will censor any unsubstantiated leaks and rightly so.It is more of the Twitter sphere that there leaks are taking place which is a phenomenon of our time.

I am sure the clubs must be worried that such info is getting out to the public and must be taking some measures to tighten the ship.

P.S. no need to apologize i get what you were trying to say i am the king of the typo myself.

Wolves should improve. Would take a chance on one of their defenders for sure if any are priced at 4.5.

Matt Doherty chipped in with some assists last season from RWB but I would expect him to be priced at 5.0 unfortunately.

Willy Boly might come in at 4.5, threat from set pieces and got in the Championship TOTS so should be assured starts.

I know there's very little to base it on without the fixtures and prices but what formation do you think you're likely to start with next season? I remember last season I planned to go 4-4-2 and then changed last minute to the tried and tested 3-4-3 but yet again my 3rd striker failed me pretty much all season long. That position has been a nightmare for me over the past couple seasons so I'm determined to start with a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 this time.

I think a 4-4-2, obviously things will change but I'm looking at a defence where potentially smashing options could be
      Mendy
      Sandro/Utd def
      Robertson
      Pereira
      Wolves defender?
      Sessegnon?

  19. World Cup Stat Crunching
    FFFrog
    • 9 Years
    6 years, 7 months ago

Having not played any Fantasy Football for 2 years it’s most definitely time to get back in the game, and I love a World Cup as much as anyone. As a result, I’ve been crunching some numbers, looking for any particular stats/ trends from recent World Cups. Here are my findings and a couple of suggestions.

*Disclaimer* - I haven’t found anything revolutionary but I’d spent a while looking at stats and thought I might as well share rather than waste them and if you can't be bothered to go through them I've summarised my findings at the bottom.

o Only 2 teams have kept 3 group stage clean sheets; Switzerland and Uruguay (interestingly both dark horses), 26 have kept 2 clean sheets (more than 8 teams a tournament) suggesting that splashing out on the top defenders for the group stage is not necessary; although only 6 teams kept 2 clean sheets in 2014.
o Group stage football also appears to be becoming more attacking; group games with 3 goals or more 2014 – 64.58%, 2010- 35.41%, 2006 – 43.75%, further enforcing the idea that the majority of money should be spent on attacking players.
o Goal Split between Fwds/ Mids/ Defs/ OGs over the whole tournament
    1. 2006 – Fwds 81, Mids 41, Defs 19, OGs, 4
    2. 2010 – Fwds 87, Mids 45, Defs 18, OGs 1
    3. 2014 – Fwds 89, Mids 56, Defs 19, OGs 5
Unsurprisingly, strikers score by far the most goals throughout the tournament; this correlation remains when looking at the teams that have won each group at the last 3 tournaments. Amongst these group-winning sides, on average defenders will contribute 5 goals per group stage and strikers will score twice as many goals as midfielders.
o It’s very unlikely that a side, however poor, will fail to score throughout the tournament; Only 3 teams have failed to score in the group stages; of the 8 teams that scored only 1 group goal, 5 of these came against the other eliminated side and only 2 came against the side that won the group
o Very few players have individually strong tournaments; in the last 3 World Cups only 3 players at each tournament have made more than 2 assists and 9,11,10 have scored more than 2 goals, with only 5 true midfielders scoring more than 2 goals at these 3 tournaments.

    Takeaways
o In World Cup football, forward is significantly more important than midfielder and playing a 4-3-3 (for the group stages at least) may well be the most productive formation; this will allow you to prioritise forwards, who score the majority of the goals (amongst the strongest sides twice as many as the midfielders) and the defenders of the average 8 teams per group stage that keep 2/3 clean sheets.

Thanks for this. Really interesting stuff.

I haven't played World Cup fantasy football for four years so it's definitely time for me to pick it up again.

My last week went well, but it was still very annoying to see Alonso benched and then get Long's solitary point off the bench. I don't know why the deadline couldn't have been 30 or 45 minutes before kick off so we could actually know the starting lineups.

I checked my GW1 lineup and it has quite a few guys who barely played this season.

    Foster[123] (Elliot[57])
    Luiz[32], Stephens[58], Daniels[94] (Hunemeier[1], Rangel[4])
    KDB[209], Alli[175], Loftus-Cheek[77], Redmond[72] (Carroll[85])
    Kane[217], Lukaku[162], Firmino[181]

Oof, that midfield... What happened to Redmond?

      Forster
      Bailly Yoshida Daniels
      De Bruyne Eriksen Zaha Ward-Prowse
      Kane Lukaku (c) Rodriguez
Elliot | Carrol Fosu Mensah Hunemeier

My starting team is rubbish too

Your midfield pains me, I had forgotten about it! Remember seeing it in preseason and wincing constantly.

😀 glad to make people feel better about their own teams.

I did Iwobi to Cork soon after that 🙂

I love my midfielders tbh, couldn't live with three big ones at the top. That defence was smashing though, iirc

      Fabianski(157)
      Kompany(60), Bailly(55), Bertrand(103), Yoshida(76)
      Fabregas(89), Zaha(136), Willian(130)
      Kane(217), Lukaku(162), Jesus(126)
      (Elliot(57), Loftus-Cheek(77), T.Carroll(85), Mee(90))

Weak midfield - and Kompany, Bailly and Jesus didn't play enough to justify their prices.

Manchester United are close to sealing a £43.7m deal for Juventus' Alex Sandro, with Matteo Darmian set to go in the opposite direction. (Source: La Stampa)

Mendy was, no? The likes of Valencia, Azpi, Walker, Moses, Coleman, Rose were all up there.

6.0 max imo, this season he was underwhelming.

Anyone know the overall figure of FPL participants in each season over the last 5 years ? I'm curious about how much it's grown in popularity.

Promoted teams are offering decent defender options next season.
Morrison (Cardiff) Douglas (Wolves) and Sessegnon/Amavi (Fulham/Villa) all look like potential bargains.May go cheap at the back if the prices are kind.

No defenders from the newly promoted 3 this year was above 4.5 right?

No, Tommy Smith was 5.0, think there were a couple of others

Hmm, even if Douglas was 5.0 then I'd say he might be a good shout.

In the other day, in a conversation I had here with Cloudsky, I found it interesting to do a ranking by countries according to the points that each one had this season in the FPL.

For those who are interested in seeing the results obtained, just click in link below:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TNQXr5n42kWptvXvMRa4XAXreO456cwrLTXEG1JBwS0/edit?usp=sharing

I know that some countries are missing, but I think the best ones are already included here. However, if anyone is curious to see some country that is not on this list, please tell in the comments and I will try to update the document as soon as possible 🙂

Anyone have any historical stats on teams with high percentages of world cup players in the first team performing well/badly after a world cup? Could be interesting

Palmeri's a clown but this would go in line with what I would like. An experienced head to nurture Karius.
