Meunier is Fantasy top scorer as Belgium beat England to World Cup bronze

Belgium’s World Cup Fantasy options rewarded their owners with a parting gift in their last match of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Those invested in England were left disappointed though, as they were unable to register any returns.

We’ve got all the goals and assists and Fantasy talking points from the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 7 points
  • Eden Hazard (£10.1m) – 6 points
  • Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) – 6 points
  • Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) – 6 points
  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 5 points
  • Nacer Chadli (£6.9m) – 4 points

Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) was the top-scorer as Belgium beat England in the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

The wing-back finally rewarded his 10.7 percent ownership with his first and final goal of the tournament, after showing promise both in qualifying and the earlier stages in Russia.

He even had a chance to add another strike in the second-half as his drive from the right was saved spectacularly by Jordan Pickford (£5.5m).

On top of his fourth-minute goal, assisted by Nacer Chadli (£6.9m), Meunier kept the clean sheet too. His defensive colleagues, Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m), Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) and Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) also banked points for the shut-out.

England came into the tie a little more in the second-half with Harry Kane (£11.2m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.7m) and Eric Dier (£5.7m) the most dangerous.

Owners of Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) were initially disappointed by his withdrawal in the 59th minute but he was eventually awarded two points for playing 60th minutes by McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy.

Belgium finally put the game beyond England late in the second-half, catching them on the break. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) was allowed too much space to thread Eden Hazard (£10.1m) through to slot home.

BELGIUM XI (3-4-2-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld; Chadli (Vermaelen 39’), Witsel, Tielemans (Dembele 78’), Meunier; Hazard, De Bruyne; Lukaku (Mertens 60’).

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Jones; Dier; Rose (Lingard 45’), Delph, Loftus-Cheek (Alli 84’), Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 45’), Kane.

According to this Marco Silva will be playing Sigurdsson behind a lone striker in a 4-3-3.

Lookman and Walcott would be ideal either side of the main striker?
Also wasn't Naisse on loan at Hull under Silva?
    Could he again?

        Good to know.
I looked at Niasse's stats at Hull not as good as in my head

Those goals against Swansea were his Hull highlight.

    Thoughts on this:

    Pickford
    Alonso Robertson Davies
    Salah(C) Sanchez Siggy Hughes
    Firmino Tosun Zaha

    (Hamer, Yoshida, Schelotto, Gunnarsson)

    How does it look?

very nice but a weak bench, peltier over Schelotto, better 4.5s than Yoshida too.

What 4.5's you thinking? Had Tomkins originally. Yoshida tends to do well for bps and Southampton defence cover is decent at 4.5m imo. You thinking Cedric is a better option?

        1. olly:)

Tomkins better imo, Cedric at RWB is probably better than yoshida, esp with them signing vestergaard he might not even start. Also Charlie Daniels has good fixtures and is in a wing back role if bournemouth can sort their cleanies out.

Downgrade Alonso / Sanchez and upgrade Schelotto / Gunnarsson

Alonso to Coleman gives me 1mil. No need to upgrade Gunnarsson or Schelotto/Peltier in my opinion. Rather have fodder and use cash elsewhere.

I don’t like Alonso, siggy, Sanchez, Hughes, Yoshida and schelotto. Weak strike force. So 4/10 maybe

Mane's points per a match is actually .2 higher than Firmino's and that's including his red card vs City. Anyone else find it surprising as it seemed that Firmino was doing much better last year? Do you think that Mane is a better option than Firmino?

The other thing to consider is there are much better cheap midfield options than striker ones, so if you have Firmino you could have a decent 4.5/5.0 mid backup who should be nailed (Cairney, Kenedy etc.) but there aren't many guaranteed starting strikers in that price range.

I don't think questions like this are that useful, as it's not an either or and we don't know how they fit into the rest of your proposed team. Aubameyang is a great option and I think Wood is a better option than Lamela, but it doesn't mean I'd play them both.

      1. noahzark22
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 11 months ago

The rest of my team doesn't matter.

and you hit the point I'm making. Is upgrading Wood to Aubameyang worth the drop from Eriksen to Lamela and the loss of monetary flexibility.

          • 6 Years

With Kane, Dier, and Son gone for at least GW1, maybe Lamela is a worthwhile punt to get Aubs in. But again, it's an extra 1.5 to spend.

I don't follow how the rest of my team matters? The players I listed aren't dependent on the others for their points. What do my defenders have to do with how Lamela or Wood perform?

I finished 89,999 in 2013/14, so what does that mean? And I was 140,422 in 15/16.

Its does matter. 1.5ITB could make huge different to others area eg: 5.5 mid > 7.0 mid. in that case you should make 3 choices instead of 2.

Unless you are planning to save 1.5ITB. Then, I will say Aub & Lamela. Why? Auba more explosive then Eriksen, Lamela could be punt really.

Here is my current team and justifications for why I’ve chosen them. Thoughts?

Ederson - Man City - Clean sheet potential all games and good fixtures

Valencia - Man Utd - Clean Sheet - BP Magnet - Attacking

Azpilicueta - Chelsea - Clean Sheet - BP Magnet -

Robertson - Attacking - BP Magnet and great fixtures.

Tomkins - 4.5 - Dangerous from set pieces - clean sheet potential - goal potential

Bennett - Cardiff - 4.5 - Neil Warnocks team will be mainly focused on defence and being hard to beat.

Salah - Well, I couldn’t not do that move

Sanchez - One week gamble - can see him doing well against Leicester - Goal potential and assists potential. Starting at front?

Gudmonson - Burnley - Great opening fixtures - assist king

Cairney - Great player in championship, hopefully he can step up. Bargain at 5m for me

Armstrong - Southampton - My first punt. Always liked watching this guy play. Expecting big things

Aguero - Good starring fixtures and all round player. Only concern is rotation.

Tosun - Good fixtures. Can see him doing great this year in an attacking team.

    Quaner 4.5 - bench fodder

    Thank you

    Advice?

Bennett doesn't start for Cardiff and fair enough on the Armstrong punt. Looks good, but I wouldn't personally pay so much for the likes of Ederson and Valencia. Taking someone as a one week gamble? I'm not sure about that.

Gudmunsson is assist king you say? Are you high? I'd like to know what you're smoking anyways. Burnley have zero attacking outlets from midfield (bar set pieces which is taken by Brady). I stopped reading after I saw his name in your team

Nice team. Defence similar to what I'm looking at. Not too keen on Daniels but that's just a personal preference.
Not sure about double Everton attack but they have the fixtures so could be a good move. Prefer Ramsey to Mkhi if you can get the extra 0.5 from somewhere.
If Austin can stay fit and keep his place in the team he could be a great option, but that's a big if. One to monitor in pre-season.

Maybe better you took a look at what gets deleted and learn from it, think TM and mods should be deleting a lot more of this kind of tripe-post.

Strangely enough, from a deleted post of a couple nights ago, he stated that they were slagging off FFS and made derogatory about himself.
Strangely no mention of either in post linked..

A terrible podcast btw, really awful.

Walcott and Wood have a really nice fixture and no need for rotation for most of the time.

But Tosun is hard to ignore. 5.5 mid is really good though? I only find this option 5.0 mid is a hard bargain.

How about Alexander Lacazette instead of Auba?

14 goals 5 assists last season.
Wenger killed him as an option with 60 minute substitutions.

No Pens. But will play centrally.
    Auba still better player though.

So whats the common formation used here?

    Started last season with 442.

Any reason to go with 352 or 343?

    1. Cok3y5murf
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 11 months ago

I don't pre-decide what formation to go with. I just go with where the value and pricing in each new season takes me. Based on this season's prices, I've gone with a 442.

This. Formation means very little to me, though it normally ends up on 343.

I prefer the 352 and the 343 as well, but if I'm going with Salah, I don't like the look of my defence with 3 at the back. So it'll depend on that.

3-4-3 arguably the best formation for many seasons. But to start FPL season, mostly 4-4-2 is the best.

If I remember correctly, last season def give a good points. In fact, Top player for 5 gameweeks maybe come from defender.

Mid yeah like usual some give potential return as well.

Defenders very rarely rise by much though, unless it's someone unusual like Bale as a defender. It's all about points.

Not sure you want double newcastle def. Well, 1 newcastle def I think too much either for their fixture. 😀

      Maybe, Yedlin/Dummet > Tomkins & 4.0 def (Bennet/Peltier), Hamer > 4.5 Keeper like Patricio/Foster

Opps you have Sakho. Well maybe Cedric/Daniels then. I dont know much 4.5 def options.

      Fab fixtures aren't good.
Sell Siggy (you've already had Tosun).
      2x Newcastle defenders isn't a good idea.

      Too much Everton
      Template Cedric/Daniels rather than Newcastle

    4 pairs of rotation (starred)

    Foster* Fabianski*
    Valencia Cedric* Williams* Daniels* Tomkins*
    Salah debruyne Sanchez Willian Stephens*
    Firmino Tosun Quaner*

    Gives me flexibility to do 5-4-1 / 4-4-2 / 3-4-3/ 3-5-2/ 4-5-1

Any suggestions or better options at the same price?

      Quaner Stevens I don't like.
      Others are fine.
      Salah KDB Sanchez overkill

    Anyone going Kun-Auba-Austin up front?

Or Tosun, Zaha, Arnie etc instead of Austin
