Meunier is Fantasy top scorer as Belgium beat England to World Cup bronze

Belgium’s World Cup Fantasy options rewarded their owners with a parting gift in their last match of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Those invested in England were left disappointed though, as they were unable to register any returns.

We’ve got all the goals and assists and Fantasy talking points from the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 7 points
  • Eden Hazard (£10.1m) – 6 points
  • Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) – 6 points
  • Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) – 6 points
  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 5 points
  • Nacer Chadli (£6.9m) – 4 points

Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) was the top-scorer as Belgium beat England in the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

The wing-back finally rewarded his 10.7 percent ownership with his first and final goal of the tournament, after showing promise both in qualifying and the earlier stages in Russia.

He even had a chance to add another strike in the second-half as his drive from the right was saved spectacularly by Jordan Pickford (£5.5m).

On top of his fourth-minute goal, assisted by Nacer Chadli (£6.9m), Meunier kept the clean sheet too. His defensive colleagues, Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m), Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) and Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) also banked points for the shut-out.

England came into the tie a little more in the second-half with Harry Kane (£11.2m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.7m) and Eric Dier (£5.7m) the most dangerous.

Owners of Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) were initially disappointed by his withdrawal in the 59th minute but he was eventually awarded two points for playing 60th minutes by McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy.

Belgium finally put the game beyond England late in the second-half, catching them on the break. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) was allowed too much space to thread Eden Hazard (£10.1m) through to slot home.

BELGIUM XI (3-4-2-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld; Chadli (Vermaelen 39’), Witsel, Tielemans (Dembele 78’), Meunier; Hazard, De Bruyne; Lukaku (Mertens 60’).

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Jones; Dier; Rose (Lingard 45’), Delph, Loftus-Cheek (Alli 84’), Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 45’), Kane.

If Chelsea gets a new coach, that doesn't play with WB, isn't Alonso good enough to find pitch time regardless?

I'd rather gamble on Moses as he is a more versatile player.

Not convinced he is actually any good as a full-back. His main skill was charging forward and direct free kicks.

Even if he was, the argument that he is essentially a 6.5m attacking midfielder no longer stands.

Possibly - I guess it could, depending on how Sarri views him.

My main concern is that he played a very specific role under Conte that was very effective - but flattered him.

But time will tell - but I wouldn't be choosing him until we know for sure.

82 and 86 in a league of their own imo.
94 was obviously great for us Swedes but even apart from that it was still quite good. This has been decent enough though I find harder and harder to get truly excited, guessing it has to do with age. Another factor could be exposure, these days there is a game on telly or online just about 24/7, that was not the case in the early 80´s.

A defender should never be essential in a Draft.

Gotta fill all the attacking slots as a priority

        Disagree.

Salah, for me, is the only nailed outfield player in my team.

In defence, Robertson/VVD, Smalling/Bailly, Ederson are all nailed.

    3. polis

Salah because ownership means OR absolute crushed if he turns it on again instantly. Plus he's the easiest player to move out if he doesn't.

No other essentials if you ask me.

    4. Reuser
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Wouldn't say "essential", but the five players who are pretty much set in stone:

      1. Salah
      2. Aubameyang
      3. Mahrez
      4. Robertson
      5. Douglas

Interesting set of 5 - Douglas is highly rated, but are you sure he can continue in the PL? If you look at the top defenders last season, they all came from big teams (the top 11 I think) - that's why I'm focusing on those kind of defenders, more than hoping for attacking returns from lesser teams.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on Mahrez - I assume he's a short term pick while Sterling rests and recuperates after world cup?

Other three I can get behind, though very much debating Aguero vs Auba still

        1. Reuser
          • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I'm hoping Douglas can deliver. At 5.0, on set-pieces now aiming for the head of 6 foot 5 Jiminez and with 24 clean sheets last season, I see no reason not to go with him.

I also agree about premium defenders having value - he'll be paired with Robertson, Mendy and Coleman (plus Tomkins).

Punting on Mahrez simply because I think he is a much more complete player than Sane or Sterling. World Cup absentees make it likely he gets a chance to play early on and make his mark.

Choosing Auba from the start as I want him long-term and would rather not plan a transfer for gw3. That transfer could come in very handy as the bargains and bandwagons become apparent. He is good enough to score against a depleted City and transitioning Chelsea.

      probably only Salah

All the others have similar alternatives

Right now, my draft is pretty much focused around Salah.

      Mahrez could change to Sane

Strikers will probably be 2 of Aubameyang, Lacazette, Aguero or Firmino but could be any combination. Maybe Jesus too.

Defenders could all change even though I know basically how many ‘premiums’ I’ll probably go for

Pedro is only gonna start if Hazard misses GW1, but he won't be an option for long even then. Other than that it's fine.

The FA and FPL have informed me my team name maybe offensive.

This is clearly not the case as all my team names are my favoured Prem league athletes.

Fuchs Mane has been mentioned on the scoutcast numerous times might I add.

It could be interpreted as “Fu**s Many C**ts”. They're probably cracking down on any team with Fuchs in the title because of the similarity. Fer Fuchs Ake in particular is probably going to be phased out.

Not 100% but less competition for his place! Silva Bilva Sane Sterling Mahrez Kdb etc is ridiculous.

Could argue that it's only Bsilva and Mahrez competing for that spot in the short term with Sterling coming in later.

Could play with Jesus and Aguero but heard a few others say Pep favours Jesus although I'm not sure.

Either way, weigh it up and take the risk you think is best 😉

Any reason why button is the ‘go to’ 4.0 goalkeeper? Just a cute name? Or does he have a higher chance of playing than the other 4.0s? Or maybe he’s just a good goalkeeper, or the first choice dude is injury prone? Just wondering, he’s the only name I’ve seen listed as a 4.0

His open play goals came from the left of a front three. He, Lacazette and Nelson mixed it up a bit as the half went on, as Ghost Gooner suggests above.

    Sanchez/Zaha or Aguero/Sessegnon?

Sanchez likely to start season with Lukaku rested. Mata, Martial, Fred, Matic behind. No world cup for Sanchez too advantage.
Zaha strong end to 2017/18 season and could play up front again.

Aguero likely to start up front with Mahrez and Sane with most of their first-team regulars likely to not be at 100% following the world cup. e.g defence particularly.
Sessegnon doubts about him playing left wing and whether his goal output can be translated to the prem? Having said that I do own Jota in my team atm.

Leaning towards Sanchez/Zaha unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Scotty, here’s a suggestion. Go to the official FPL website and go to “transfers”. Sort by “Selected by”. Make sure to squeeze in as many of the most selected players as possible. Your team is now set. Take a well deserved break from FFS and come back post gw1 and tell us how you did. Enjoy & good luck.
