Scoutcast Episode 267 – Lucky

Do we make our own luck? Or are there unforeseen events that can conspire to ruin even the best Fantasy managers’ seasons?

In this week’s Scoutcast, David, Andy and Az join me to discuss the role of fortune in Fantasy football as we look to introduce a ‘luck league’.

This is one of a number of new and revamped features we trialled following the international break.

This saw the return of old favourites, including Rough with the Smooth and clean sheet predictions, as well as a new version of Fantasy Island Risks that focuses purely on low-owned gems.

Our Community section has undergone a late spring clean too, focusing on the week’s key teams, players and talking point to allow us to have more in-depth discussions.

But as with all trials, some things don’t quite go as planned.

The introduction of forfeits for the Scoutcaster with the lowest monthly score and an unexpectedly controversial quiz proved to be more works in progress, which will be put back on the shelf for the time being.

Among all the upheaval we also find time to ponder going without Liverpool’s pricey talisman Mohamed Salah and frisk the fixtures to analyse the teams with the best upcoming run of games.

This Scoutcast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday evening. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

Mad for me every time. But I have a man crush on him and he has been in my team since GW2.

    My team is...

    Ryan
    Alonso - Mendy - Robertson
    Fraser* - Hazard - Maddison - Salah - Pogba
    Aguero - Jimenez*

    Button - Docherty - AWB - Kamara*

    1 FT
    0 ITB

If Fraser & Jimenez are out I could be in a mess. I would be 1 dropped player away from only fielding 10 players. One option is this trade...

    Pogba & Jimenez > Hojberg & Vardy (-4)

It gives me an extra sub option this week and a differential in Vardy before his great run of fixtures. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't say you need an extra sub option. You have two solid options. Can't see any of the others not getting significant minutes. I would get shot of Pogba eventually tho but maybe after this run of fixtures

The original plan wqa to find a way to upgrade him to KDB. An upgrade to Silva is another option. It even a downgrade to Rich. It may be sensible to wait a week and reassess.

I have the same midfield except Mkhi over Pogba. I can't find the cash at all to upgrade that spot once you add the 3 premium left backs and Aguero

I'm looking to jump on Richarlison either in 6/7. Might 1 week punt on Mkhi > Pedro

It's an odd bracket. Like you said it is finding the cash. I can't downgrade Jinenez/Docherty/Fraser without weakening my squad. Richarlson looks the obvious player. I might wait a week and reassess. It would allow me to potentially switch Jimenez to potentially Wilson as well.

If you want Rich I would be tempted to hold this week and make the straight trade next week.

I can't see Mkhi playing so I'm think less than 10 mins again

And you can probably get at least 2 weeks from Pedro.

Coleman injury, and lack of cleanies/returns so he's going.

I am looking at a few factors pushing me towards Lukaku on my WC:
    -He is hitting form
-He has the fixtures to do what he does best: bully weak sides
-He is absolutely sure to start all games unlike the mcity mids
-He may grab pens now Pogba has missed one
-I feel that i am missing an obvious way to grab a differentiating heavy hitter by not getting him

As such i have two options:
A/ Kaku Option: Lukaku + Maddison
    B/ Balanced Option: Vardy + D Silva

    Any thoughts from other people?

I think Joe made a good comment in the podcast when he said Pedro will play at least 20 minutes coming off the bench whereas Mhiki can be limited to 1 minute as we saw last week. So as midfielders go who are under rotation risk Pedro would be the better option.

Very similar to mine except I have Dilva and Mitro ahead of Pedro and Wilson so a bit more money tucked away. I like the idea of keeping enough money aside to drop Salah in easily (I was thinking for Mane) but I can’t quite manage it without major trading down

Good stuff - yeah, keen to find a way to put Mitro in while still having the funds for Salah...

I can't see you wanting to use a tfr each time you want Salah or Hazard.

It's just for the next few games - Liverpool's fixtures are tricky compared to Chelsea, but keen to captain Salah against Southampton.

Kun and Haz have ok fixtures then too. Is it worth the -8 tfr equivalent and have 2.8 wasted in the wings just for that

Sharp enough for clever flicks and passes. I don't think his goalscoring form is coming anytime soon though.

Has everyone gone off Bilva? Too prone to rotation? Could we see him back for Fulham at home?

FPL points are the main issue.

For me, City's midfield is still too unreliable. I've tripled on more nailed options - Ederson, Mendy and Kun.

    Draft team

Need to start 2 defenders from Robbo (tot), Young (wat), AWB (hud), Mustafi (new)

Going on CS odds alone gives Young and Mustafi, but I’m not convinced. Any thoughts?

18 points over 302 minutes (average)
    Fixtures good
    Eye candy yes
    Stats good
6.6 price tag (common price range)
    Still relatively unproven
8 players have better numbers in his price range
    Does he deserve the hype?
    No IMO

Yeah, it's a lot of hot air really. He might be good but there's not a lot to go on unless you include his record in the Championship (which doesn't always translate to the PL by any means).

Also, his xA according to FFS (which is a lot of what the hype is based on) is untrustworthy; other xA models give a much lower number. In passing, I actually think xA should be taken out of the FFS stats zone completely, it is a very imprecise calculation that is still very much a work in progress for OPTA and doesn't correlate well to actual assists. xG is simpler to calculate and much more trustworthy.

Much depends for Maddison on the playing relationship he develops with Vardy. So far we have 92 minutes of evidence there, not enough to conclude anything from. So, over-hyped is correct in my view too.

        Very well put.
I just ask who i would rather have over a period:
Mitro, Wilson Perreyra Richi just a few

Wouldn't mind any of those. 🙂

I currently have Pereyra who was in my GW1 team. Will probably add Mitrovic next week unless Tosun gives me a good reason to keep him (which I'd prefer). Wilson is less likely for me because I much prefer Fraser and wouldn't double on attackers from a mid-table team without very good reason. Richarlison becomes an option for me if I remove Tosun and I do think that 6.6m is good value. Deeney also seems a live prospect in that band, there are solid reasons why he looks much better this season (he's fitter) and Schürrle is probably an 8m midfielder in disguise if he becomes established as clear 1st choice (not sure he will be, though, with Vietto and Sessegnon competing).

Main thing is that Ings and Fraser are cheaper and better than all of them in my opinion. 🙂

Definitely on the same page. I want Mitro but waiting for fixture.

Lacazette is a risk too far for me, he's only started 1 in 4 matches so far. But if you are confident in him, go for it. Otherwise I guess Laca > Mitro and Mane > Salah would be an option if its affordable, but you probably have your reasons for shunning Salah.

From a, I'm only looking at Mitro. Pedro's place is still uncertain imo, and Holebas, well, good for his value, but Shaw could still outscore him long-term,.

GK, defense and attack look strong.
Midfield, not so much, but I guess it's worth another gameweek to see if Mkhi reclaims his spot and if Eriksen can find some points. I don't think Eriksen is worth 9,5 though with the fullbacks stealing all his set pieces.
