Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah, Hazard and Aguero present Gameweek 6 dilemma

The Gameweek 6 captain debate looks set to be the most difficult of the season so far.

The top three candidates according to our poll all have favourable fixtures and can also boast impressive underlying numbers.

While there are alternative options worth considering, this week we seek to answer which one of Mohamed Salah, Eden Hazard and Sergio Aguero should get your armband.

Captain Poll

Gameweek 6 could prove an incredibly dramatic one as the most-sold player is the current captain poll leader.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) has already been transferred out by 219,000+ Fantasy managers but has a 30% share of our vote (at time of writing).

The Liverpool man has blanked for two weeks in a row, and five midfield options have registered more points than him so far this season.

However, it would seem that those who have voted in our poll are keeping faith in Salah based on some impressive underlying statistics that we’ll touch on below. A home fixture against Southampton is hugely appealing, too.

Currently occupying second place is last week’s hat-trick hero Eden Hazard (£10.9m), who has been backed by roughly 22% of voters.

The Chelsea man is now the only FPL asset to register returns in every match so far, despite not even starting the first two Gameweeks.

His next opponent West Ham are still without a clean sheet, and their defensive frailties should prove easy for Hazard to exploit.

Last week’s runaway captain poll winner Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) has to settle for third place this time around with 18% of the votes.

Large numbers of his owners will admit to being disappointed that the Manchester City forward only registered two assists against Fulham and no goals. That may be one of the reasons why more are trusting Salah and Hazard.

Also, the Argentinian picked up a knock in that match but returned to action for a substitute’s appearance against Lyon in the Champions League midweek.

The fact that he did not start on Wednesday night suggests that, at the very least, he will lead the line on Saturday when the defending champions visit a vulnerable Cardiff City side.

Not surprisingly, Fantasy managers are considering Sadio Mané (£10.0m) as the best of the rest, with an 8% share of the vote. The Senegalese midfielder offers a cheaper route into the Liverpool attack than Salah, is in good form and may relish a match against his former employers in Southampton.

Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) both sit in the 3% bracket while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m), Jamie Vardy (£8.9m), Ryan Fraser (£5.7m). Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.4m) are the only other options currently above 1%.

2 FT with 2.6 itb, you reckon it's a waste of funds to ship one of Wilson or Zaha for Laca, if I bring him in I'd give him the arm band over Aguero this week. Re the prospect of losing Wilson, I also own Fraser.

Probably Salah, but not because he is the most expensive player in the game, rather they have a good home game against a side that has conceded bucketloads of chances. Also, his stats are still great.

Strongly considering Mitrovic out of the other players I have.

So with Liverpool showing a lot of improvement in their defensive solidity, could that mean that Klopp is generally exercising a little more caution going forward?

I may be wrong here, but I get the feeling they are not as gung ho as they were last year... Will Liverpool generally be focusing a little more on keeping it tight at the back and grinding out victories this year?

Against PSG they seemed free flowing in the first half and looked like they were willing to go all out, but looked very different in the second half.

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

Their defence was shocking against PSG and they conceded in two previous PL games.

Keep reading FPL stats. You don't know a whole lot about football if you think their defence wasn't shocking against PSG. Attacking football and keeping possession is what keeps their score down. A better keeper and Van Dijk are the true defence. As with Lovren, Van Dijk has improved Gomes as a defender. Robertson and Arnold are good going forward but apprentice defenders at that level. Liverpool haven't had a quality defensive full back since Rob Jones.

Judging by the criticism mbappe and neymar got in France and the analysis i watched after the game id say they did their job very well. The second goal was a result of loss of posession by Salah going on the counterattack. Not sure how the defenders can be scrutinized here...

            1. GreennRed
              • 12 Years

Salah was poor giving the ball away. But the defence conceded it. I'm old school in that thinking, no offence meant. I think Neymar is overrated and childish wasting his great talent. Looked good in a Barca team surrounded by quality. Plays for Neymar usually, not the team. Mbappe looks the real deal at this stage.

No but shocking? If that was shocking then we shouldn't get any defenders from any PL team in our fantasyteams..

As a Liverpool supprter and very poor ex- right back I thought it was shocking. Hansen used to call it schoolboy defending. Sure Robertson and Arnold's defending will improve. Their attacking returns are drawing a large part of their ownership.

I don't think it's a shift in the mindset, just personnel. The improvement began when VvD arrived, and his influence on the defence has grown.

Add to that the development of the full backs and Gomez, the addition of a top goalkeeper and a better-gelled midfield.

Yeah this, very focused and ambitious recruiting.

The team has improved defensively but not at the expense of the attack, just a better team overall.

Yeah. A lot of the defensive work done by midfield covering pockets to let Arnold and Robertson get forward. Milner's not old but is in gametime. Still playing serious ball.

Really tempted taking a slight gamble on Ramsey.
Can do a straight swap from Mhkitaryan.

    Will end up with:

    De Gea
    Robertson, Mendy, Wan Bissaka
    Hazard, Salah, Ramsey, Fraser, Richarlison
    Aguero, Zaha

    (Hamer, Dunk, Peltier, Kamara)

    What do you think?

With the below concerns due to injury/rotation think I need to do Cairney > Fraser for a hit.

    What do you folks think?

    Patricio
    Shaw*, Mendy* TAA, Alonso
    Mane, Salah, Richarlison
    Aguero, Arnie*, Wilson

    Hamer, AWB, Cairney, Hudson-Odio

Arnie should play, AWB has a good fixture should Mendy not play so then you just have to hope (which I assume he will) that Shaw starts, so I wouldn’t take a hit.

What transfer have you already made

I’d start focusing on your bench with your next couple of transfers if I had that team.

Hi, I maybe will use my WC today, depending on injury updates. I have constructed two (A & B) WC, one with 3-5-2 and the other 3-4-3. Which one would you pick, and would you make any changes to the WC?

    A) (3-5-2)
    Patricio, Hamer
    TAA, Mendy, Shaw, Bennett, AWB
    Salah, Hazard, D.Silva, Richarlison, Maddison
    Aguero, Mitrovic, Kamara

    0 ITB

    B)
    Patricio, Hamer
    TAA, Mendy, Shaw, Bennett, AWB
    Salah, Hazard, Maddison, Fraser, Hjogberg
    Aguero, Lacazette, Mitrovic

    0,1 ITB

Depending on Mendy injury I maybe transfer him out for Pereira and save Robertson.
    Cheers.

I just wouldn't have a squad with Salad in. He's too expensive. He will not score like he did last season as teams set up with good awareness of him now and the fact he has so many shots but is not scoring is not just bad luck. If he was 11 million yes but he is 2 million too expensive and I think the better FL teams this season will be the ones who are brave enough to go without him

It's funny that Arnies heat map shows he has spent most time taking kick offs...

      Owners should be happy.

They won't be worried about a 5 minute cameo now.

      Was never going to start.

Oh yeah, he was going for me regardless. Just haven't worked out which of Richarlison or Maddison to get instead.
