Kane and Son in superb form ahead of more appealing FPL fixtures

On a weekend of eyebrow-raising scorelines and impressive away victories in the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur delivered arguably the most exhilarating display of Gameweek 18 at Goodison Park on Sunday.

While Crystal Palace and Leicester City have strong claims for “result of the week” with their wins at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Spurs’ swashbuckling attacking exhibition – like Manchester United’s in South Wales – caught the eye from a Fantasy perspective.

Everton had taken only one point from five previous meetings with “big six” clubs in 2018/19 but the magnitude of Spurs’ victory was totally unexpected, with Mauricio Pochettino’s troops making light work of a side that had previously been beaten only once on home soil this season.

Anyone who owned one or more of Spurs’ front four would have been rewarded with FPL points, as Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen all got on the scoresheet in the same game for the very first time.

An injury to Alli slightly soured proceedings, but as we will discuss below, the problem doesn’t sound too serious and his half-time withdrawal may have been precautionary in nature.

We’ll also round up the goals, assists, manager quotes and Fantasy talking points from the highest-scoring Premier League match of the season so far.

Everton 2-6 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Theo Walcott (£6.2m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) | Son Heung-min (£8.5m) x2, Dele Alli (£8.9m), Harry Kane (£12.5m) x2, Christian Eriksen (£9.3m)
  • Assists: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m), Richarlison (£7.0m)| Harry Kane, Son Heung-min x2, Kieran Trippier (£6.1m), Erik Lamela (£6.2m)

A year to the day since Harry Kane (£12.5m) hit the first of two successive Premier League hat-tricks in a comfortable away victory at Burnley, the Spurs forward was involved in another three of his side’s strikes as the Lilywhites demolished Everton on Merseyside.

This time it was two goals and one assist, with his 15-point haul being a season-high total and his third double-digit return on the road.

Kane though was slightly upstaged by Son Heung-min (£8.5m), who became only the third player this season to score more than 20 points in a single Gameweek.

Since Gameweek 11, no FPL player has been directly involved in more league goals than Son and Kane (ten each).

Kane has delivered an attacking return in each of his last seven starts and now he and Spurs face a run of six home fixtures in the space of eight Gameweeks, starting with a Boxing Day clash against a Bournemouth side who have conceded more shots in the box than all bar Burnley and Cardiff City in the last six Gameweeks.

FPL’s most expensive striker had twice as many attempts on goal as any other forward in Gameweek 18 and even by the time Spurs fell a goal behind to a Theo Walcott (£6.2m) strike, Kane was setting his sights.

A lob that dropped wide over an advancing Jordan Pickford (£5.0m) and a free-kick fired over the top of the Everton custodian’s bar preceded the game’s opening goal, before he twice missed the target either side of Son Heung-min‘s (£8.5m) leveller.

Kane played a big part in that goal too, with his optimistic through-ball being pounced on by the Korean midfielder when Pickford and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) made a complete hash of clearing it.

Dele Alli (£8.9m) then stabbed home Spurs’ second goal when Pickford parried Son’s shot before Kane finally got in on the act, showing predatory instincts to react when Kieran Trippier‘s (£6.1m) free-kick struck the upright.

Kane doubled his tally after the break when sweeping home an excellent Son cross.

No player on show at Goodison could match the England striker’s total of nine penalty box touches and this was more of a “Kane of old” performance – though with the now obligatory dropping deep thrown into the bargain.

It’s perhaps no surprise that Kane shone when playing alongside Son, Alli and Christian Eriksen (£9.3m), his regular comrades in attack last season who have so seldom been played together this season.

Son is in the middle of a purple patch of his own, with his confidently taken two goals – his second being teed up by substitute Erik Lamela (£6.2m) – indicative of his current hot streak.

Playing alongside Kane and occasionally in advance of him, Son made more final third touches than any other Spurs player on Sunday afternoon and only trailed his premium colleague by one penalty box touch.

Son is still available for another four Premier League fixtures before he heads off to the Asian Cup, so there is certainly plenty of mileage left in him ahead of his departure after Gameweek 22.

Eriksen and Alli’s excellent contributions were perhaps not as noteworthy from an underlying stats perspective but each left Merseyside with a goal – the Dane’s strike being a superbly hit shot from just outside the box after Kane’s cross was headed clear.

As we mentioned earlier, Alli was hooked at half-time after aggravating a hamstring injury in a challenge with Pickford – though Pochettino allayed fears of the severity of the problem in his post-match presser:

I didn’t see [Pickford’s tackle]. I am very curious to see the action. I think it wasn’t a great action. I don’t want to say nothing as I didn’t see on the video, but for some comment, I think was a tough action.

We will see if it’s an issue. I think he’s tired and tight in his hamstring. We hope it’s not a big issue.

Even if Alli recovers from the setback it may well be that he isn’t risked for the visit of the Cherries in Gameweek 19, with the former MK Dons midfielder having started five matches in the space of 15 days.

Moussa Sissoko (£4.9m) also limped off late on, meanwhile.

While there wasn’t to be an eighth clean sheet of the season and the Spurs backline didn’t look particularly convincing in the opening exchanges, Trippier was once again prominent in attacking positions: setting up an early chance for Kane, testing the reflexes of Pickford from inside the box and striking the post with a free-kick, all within the first half.

Everton had initially caused problems for Spurs, with Richarlison (£7.0m) spurning a presentable early headed chance and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) having a goal perhaps harshly disallowed for a push with the score at 1-0.

Calvert-Lewin, who led the line again after his goal at Manchester City last week, had earlier teed up Walcott for the game’s opening goal.

Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.3m) at least handed their owners a consolation attacking return, with the Brazilian perhaps fortunate to claim the “assist” for his team-mate’s superb solo goal early in the second half.

Neither player really shone on an afternoon dominated by their opposite numbers, while the less said about the Everton defence the better.

Lucas Digne (£5.0m) got forward to deliver a few crosses and was perhaps the least atrocious of the back five from a defensive perspective, with Pickford, Zouma and Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) having dismal afternoons.

It is now five fixtures without a clean sheet for Marco Silva’s troops, though admittedly three of those games were against members of the “big six”.

The Toffees sit top of our Season Ticker for the next six Gameweeks, at least, so can expect easier tests in the coming month.

The loss of the influential Andre Gomes (£5.4m) could be significant, though, with the Portuguese midfielder limping from the pitch early in the second half.

The Liverpool Echo reported that the on-loan Barcelona star damaged his knee in Sunday’s encounter, though no update has been forthcoming from the club.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Zouma, Digne; Gomes (Schneiderlin 53′), Davies; Richarlison (Bernard 75′), Sigurdsson (Tosun 83′), Walcott; Calvert-Lewin.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-1-2): Lloris; Trippier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Davies; Sissoko (Moura 83′), Winks, Eriksen; Alli (Lamela 46′); Son (Skipp 79′), Kane.

While United had a very strong GW18, scoring 5 and looking fluid, City struggled mightily against Palace. It is, of course, only one game, but City have looked a little bit less like City lately and United's response to the new manager was encouraging.

Have your say on United here: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/12/22/aubameyang-finally-delivers-on-promise-of-recent-weeks/?hc_page=10&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_19529104

    But what about City?

Rotation was always a worry - is it more of a worry now? What do you make of Sterling coming off early - do you think he starts the next game? How will Pep prepare for Liverpool?

Aguero and KDB are back in around the team, with Silva lurking. Are City players becoming too much of a risk, with other strong options emerging?

I think the fact they are chasing now and are 4 points behind. Surely his rotation off recent weeks is now a luxury they can't afford.

I think we will see their best 11 played certainly at Leicester, maybe the odd change for Southampton with Liverpool in mind.

i'm holding both sterling and sane for now, will maybe look to ship Raheem if he is benched or blanks at the Kingpower.

Sane is a good price and in great form, so isn't leaving my team anytime soon.

I kind of expect Mahrez to start at his old club.

But then who of Sterling Sane drops out? Sane provides the width pep wants, so maybe Sterling gets benched? But then Sterling was taken off early with Jesus and Aguero up front. I don't know what to think

      2. AndyCook
          5 years, 10 months ago

But what is the best 11. Surely that is De Bruyne and Aguero in to start with (Silva if he was fit too) and Mahrez is hardly a downgrade on Sterling or Sane so I think he will come in too along with fullback rotation and it won’t be anything like second string

I'll tell you one thing for sure, dropping Salah for Sterling before Salah got his hat trick was the worst choice I have ever made. I think Sterling will definitely be rotated, but I'm stuck with him because of other pressing issues

On GW15 WC, I went Sane and Sterling (plus Auba and Kane) instead of Hazard and Salah and it hasn't really paid off. Looking at the fixtures, Hazard looks a must and he was unlucky not to score at the weekend. The rotation with City is bad enough, let alone with the Xmas congestion. Mahrez will start this weekend and I'd rather have the cheaper Sane as rotation won't be as bad and he's pretty much matching Sterling.

I think Jesus will feature a lot more this second half of the season so Aguero is a no for me but KDB is one to watch very closely. Defensively they have been sloppy for about 4 weeks now and it's too much money tied up for no attacking returns. Will reassess once Mendy is fit.

City attackers too risky, except Sane

At this time of year you need the Talisman of the team - Kane, Hazard, Salah types that are hard for the manager to rotate ... no room at the inn for unnecessary rotation risks

As explosive as he is I can’t see value in Sterling long term. Sane I can accept being benched as I got him at 9 mill but Sterling at 11 when the other big guns are more nailed and firing is not a risk worth taking.

Kun tends to take a while to get up to speed after injury and with no Europe for a while Jesus will get minutes.

I still think City attack is necessary though so for me the answer is simple... KDB!

KDB certainly interesting me but I want to keep Sterling one more week.. City need a response.

If Sterling misses out it would be hard to sell him but if he plays and blanks, or KDB scores really well I might make the switch

I had both Sterling and Sane and a weak bench. With two FT plus the rotation threat one had to go so Sterling made sense to me. I’m left hoping Sane plays and then will likely transfer him to KDB in the next couple of weeks.

I know Sterling has huge potential to hurt me but 11 mill plus is lot for someone I’m unlikely to captain.

Pretty much just thinking the same questions you wrote. At least for me (having two City mids) it is tempting to move one on for possibly United attacker and jump straight in United's good fixtures. Downgrading a City player would also give some interesting options to strenghten the team elsewhere. Although City has not looked like in the best City recently they are capable to score big and also Aguero and KDB coming back could give them a boost. Rotation could be viable reason to also consider other options nevertheless

I don't think I would captain a city player between now and gw28. Therefore Sterling is too expensive to own without captaining him, especially with him now appearing to be receiving less minutes. Therefore I just sold him for Salah, bringing forward a transfer I had planned anyway and giving me a better captain option for boxing day.

Sane I think is OK to hold. He's a bit cheaper and will play every match until Mendy is back. Plus he seems to be on free kicks at the moment and is very good at them. He won't have to face wan bissaka every week either!

            Expecting Salah to get 90?

I think as it's Boxing Day and the Kop would be furious if he didn't start, he'll start, but if they are cruising he is coming off at 60-70 surely.

Do you think they'll cruise it? Benitez with a fairly solid Newcastle defence bringing a megabus?

            1. The Rumour Mill
              • 7 Years
              5 years, 10 months ago

Maybe not 90 but I think he'll start and I'd accept 70. If they're cruising it will be likely salah is in the points anyway. If they aren't then I think he stays on and plays the 90.

I think Newcastle are decent defensively but they aren't anything special and Liverpool will have had 4 days rest coming into the game. I think Newcastle will be more focussed on the Fulham and Watford games either side of this pool fixture anyway.

The main factor though is Salah just looks sharp and back to his best for me. I don't want to miss out on that.

City issue is always the same. You can own 3 city players, they win 5-1 and you can get no returns.
City squad is just too good. Losing any 1 or 2 players really doesn't weaken them. No other side has the fpl offensive rotation strength of City.
Other sides you can make a case that if they are doing well it's normally only 1 or 2 players that are producing offensive fpl returns. eg Liverpool Salah, mane. Chelsea hazard. Spurs Kane.

Ive dropped all City players - David Silva made way for Pogba GW18 and no plans for bringing any city back. Too much rotation, you cant really captain any of them as a result and a pain in bum to shift them out due to their price points... As people seem to be discovering.

Getting convinced that over the longer term - Salah, Auba and Hazard are the three premiums to own. Nailed for their clubs (i.e. they don't get rotated) and have high goal involvement.

Kane is nailed, but can share goals with the Spurs midfield. Sterling is the least nailed and is also sharing goals.

my 2 City players are Kun and Delph, i'm going to hold on to Kun for another couple of weeks and see if he can find some of his old magic, if he doesn't do much then he becomes a cash cow for me to upgrade elsewhere (have Auba too)

Delph though i only brought in as a short term replacement for TAA before the palace game, Pep went mental at him at one stage during the game for losing the ball and brought him off a couple of minutes later, i think he might be dropped for the Leicester game, so i think i'll take the 4 points he got me and run (to Shaw for this gw)

I have Sane and Sterling with Kane and Auba upfront with two FTs.

The more I think about it, a trade of Sterling to Hazard seems very sensible at this time of the year. Hazard is top of the Watchlist and playing possibly in that false nine position.

Sane: he's great value although I am worried he may be rotated at LEI. Will probably hold onto him.

I wildcarded in week 15 and went without Salah. My rank has gone up so do not despair if you do not have him. Hard to see him getting full minutes against NEW or even starting for that matter.

I can see mass rotation in teams this gameweek so sit tight.

I've had him since the Leicester game, probably my best signing of the season.

Keeping till after Cardiff then will probably lose him. Short term though I would be surprised if he plays all them games.

Brought him in last night, wanted to do it a couple of weeks ago so but annoyed with myself. One of my favourite players. Think he’ll score well in next 3/4 games and times nicely with when I want salah back so can be makeweight

For me, I don't think I'd be bringing him in but I can see why some will.

Spurs might just play him all the games and they're nice fixtures, with United turning into a big game that he'll likely play in. But he could also get one of the 'easy' ones off, which makes bringing him in a bit risky.

          It's a difficult one

There's a big break between GW21 and 22 - I don't think his 22 gametime will impact on how he's managed through the next 3. Suspect he'll start them all, but come off on 75 each time

It would be just like him to be the one player who follows up a 20+ score with another haul.

Even though Sterling, Hazard, Kun, Salah all blanked after theirs

Biggest regret of my WC changing last minute from Sonny > Eriksen...

Definitely moving Eriksen this week so comes down to Sonny or Martial.

Stats wise there's only one winner.

Holding Son for 3 wks coincides nicely with a Salah re-acquisition plan..

I remember a similar situation with Mane and Afcon a few years ago. He was absolutely smashing it and I used that as a way to justify not getting him in. It did not work out.

So glad I brought him in after the north London league dergy about 4/5 gameweeks ago. For his quality and price, personally I think he's a must have if he's getting minutes and in form. Gives you an advantage over Kane owners because of the discount.

The eye test and his stats are very strong so if I didn't own him i'd bring him in for the next 4 BUT ONLY if I didn't have other priorities. It's risky using 2+ transfers to remove another decent player.

Spurs best midfield option and best of the midfield options for Kane.
He's a player that is improving every season.
Other Spurs mids are matching goal total but he's at least double the assists of Alli, moura & lamella.
Eriksen still seems key to any big Spurs performance. Goals per game almost double when he starts?

Having Kane + Son certainly made me feel better for selling Aubameyang + Brooks!

Just imagine if I’d made no transfers at all, gameweek of dreams lol.

It’s difficult to but him now with the Asian games on the horizon. I’d probably pass and buy one of the United midfielders. Which I guess keeps him as an amazing differential for the next 3.

His minutes per chance is amazing, he looks incredible when I watch him, both he and his team are in great attacking form. He’s a proven explosive player, he’s cheap and he’s about to play one of the worst defensive sides in the league. For me he’s an absolute priority over Utd mids (who at this point are still definitely punts) despite going away in 4 weeks.

Worst case scenario you switch to a Utd mid in a couple of weeks

Lingard, Pogba, Martial or Rashford - which 1 for next 5 or 6... and why?

          Assuming no restrictions.

          My thoughts....

Lingard/Martial will rotate with Mata and in Jan perhaps with Alexis too.

Rashford may have time managed by Lukaku return also.

Pogba potentially nailed? Maybe even get an advanced role?

Maybe I'm biased... I've bought him twice and he's burnt me twice, plus he gets rotated a lot and theres a lot of competition in his position.

Its not a definite call to sell him, but I would have personally. Although I guess he doesnt eat up a lot of budget and he will soon get gametime.

Otherwise Yedlin and Newcastle fixtures are not looking great either but I guess he warms your bench anyway?

He has now hit the post 4 times is it? He probably had no right to be in that area of the pitch and he was, but luck went against him again. I am holding for now as I don't really need the money this week, but he's on the chopping block....

Holding for now due to fixtures and fact that I dont have Hazard.... if I need money to fund someone he will go, but he is due a haul....

Yes also on the block to fund Hazard back, could go to Luiz even. But more likely Trent who is now a steal.

Is doing Auba to Kane for a 4pt hit madness? I already have Son. I feel both Auba & Kane could get rested this GWK.

Rest is possible but we know it will be minimal.

I considered the same move but not for a minus 4. I would hold and do it next week before Arsenal play Liverpool, but even then Arsenal have some tasty fixtures.

I sold Sterling so that I could have Kane + Auba

Yeah, I'm thinking about holding and doing the move next week. Will be terrified about Kane facing Bournemouth!

            Hamer to Button/Steele.

Is Salah worth it if you're mostly going to captain Kane? I'm on WC too and strongly considering going without.

I'm also on WC and all teams look far better without Salah.
But it feels wrong not to get him for NEW.

It's a worry yes but my thinking is that if I'm not going to captain him often (because of Kane's fixtures) then from a value point of view it's better to downgrade him and have a proper defence. Without captaincy the likes of Alonso, Robertson and VVD offer far points per million than Salah.
