Captains

Captain Sensible – Aubameyang can challenge Salah and Hazard

It looks like a three-way battle for the Gameweek 22 captaincy this weekend.

Fantasy Premier League managers are having to think big as we head into the first round of action for some time.

With the wealth of premium options all in decent form at the start of 2019, choosing the right captain could prove harder than ever.

We’re here to analyse the debate from all angles by looking at individual data, team attacking statistics and opposition defences.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) is set to win the Gameweek 22 captain poll as, at the time of writing, he has 40% backing from the voters. The Egyptian faces Brighton on Saturday afternoon having scored 12 points in three of his last four Premier League outings. Salah’s ownership continues to rise again, now just over 42% after his excellent recent form, which is probably the reason why he has done so well in our poll. The Liverpool man seems to be returning to the ‘auto-captain’ status he ended the 2017/18 campaign in.

Some way behind Salah in second place is Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard (£11.1m). It appears that 23% of our voters are confident the Belgian will deliver in Gameweek 22 after two consecutive blanks to round off the hectic festive fixtures. If we are to believe that Hazard tends to punish those who sell him after blanks, maybe he is indeed set for some attacking returns at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies have registered just one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) looks set to claim the bronze medal with his 11% backing ahead of Arsenal’s trip to West Ham. The Hammers still have just one clean sheet at home while Aubameyang has attacking returns in all but one away match against sides outside the top six this season.

Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is the best of the rest with just 6% backing, the voters suitably afraid both of the Wolves defence and the form that Manchester City have shown in Premier League matches. As we discussed in our recent League Cup notes, a 9-0 win over League Cup opposition could mean little when the top flight action is resumed. Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has just a third of Aguero’s support, with 2% of the vote, with Leroy Sané (£9.5m) even further behind on 1.25%.

Sandwiched amongst those options are Harry Kane (£12.6m) whose 2.49% share is reflective of a match against Manchester United, while Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) remains the most popular West Ham man. The Brazilian has garnered 1.9% of the vote at the time of writing.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is the only other player over 1% while Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) were close at the time of writing. The West Ham man on 0.95% and Spurs’ South Korean international with 0.83%.

Trying to bring in Salah and I have to sacrifice one of Kane or Auba...

Really tough. This article seems to prefer Auba for this week but Kane’s GWs after this week are so much better.

Auba also now out on the left with Laca up top.

    Thoughts?

Aubameyang. As it happens Munday has come to the same view about him and has summarised the reasons pretty well in Captain Sensible.

Hazard will be my v/c. It is close between the two and I think Hazard is a safer pick but that Aubameyang has a better chance of a haul.

I wouldn't captain Salah over either of those even if I had him. Which is, in fact, why I don't have him; I sold him last week because I wouldn't be captaining him before GW25.

I am currently on Salah C and Auba VC but have Kane too. I sold Hazard to get Salah. If in some parallel dimension where mathematics was different to here and ownership wasn't a factor, I would go with Auba but I am worried that if Salah scores 1 or 2 then it will affect my rank by quite a lot and Salah coupled with poor captain decision over Xmas made me drop around 300k places.

              Yes, but...

It depends what your risk tolerance is. A widely captained Salah haul when you don't have him can be painful, right enough. On the other hand a widely captained Salah blank when you captained someone that did well can have the opposite effect.

At this stage of the season it is better to play 'pure' and go for what will give you the best points potential in your judgement. The time to protect yourself regarding ownership is in the last weeks of the season if you are protecting a lead. That's how I generally play it anyway.

Yeah. Cheers Ruth. I have just gone through Brighton's defensive record at home and they haven't conceded more than 1 at home since GW 6 with the exception of Chelsea GW 17 who scored 2 against them. West Ham however...... I think I will go with my gut and go with Auba. West Ham have been consistently awful at the back and Auba is one of the best strikers in the league.

Yip, you can’t have them all and Salah is a better prospect than Auba, and Kane is a better prospect than Auba, imho

Kane better fixtures, main man up front with no other competition, 9 returns in the last 10 games ... Auba has Laca as a foil, 5 returns in last 10, trickier fixtures and a flakey Manager who could do something silly like bench him

You can add another reason: captaincy. Aubameyang is a perfect flat-track bully and you can't get a better captain than that.

People are saying that Kane will score more points over 6 weeks, or that Hazard will. They are probably right because Aubameyang has a couple of tricky fixtures ahead. But he also has some superb captaincy opportunities when you will be doubling his points, notably Cardiff GW24.

You can't compare premium attackers without making planned captaincy a big part of the equation.

                I consider Salah
(Bri, Palace, Lei, WHU, Bournemouth) a better general captain pick than Auba or Kane over the next 5

That said I will likely captain Kane against Fulham and bring Auba in for Cardiff the week after ... depending upon a few factors at the time

What is a "general captain pick"? Do we not select week by week?

The player out of the three I will captain the most over the next 5 or 6 games, obviously, the player I will retain and not swap out because I will captain him the most.

I own Kane and am likely to captain him against Fulham and will use one transfer to get Auba for Cardiff.

That is using just one transfer in 6 games to maximise my captaincy across 4 players (I have Hazard too) with Salah the ‘general or regular captain pick’ for me

Ah, OK. So it basically comes down to who we see to be better this week. Because for GW23 & 24 we have the same plans.

                        Yes that’s about it.

I do fear Auba but as a Salah, Kane & Hazard owner there is not much I can to except box clever, build up 2 transfers and bring in Auba for Cardiff

Of course I need to plan for the blanks/doubles, domestic and European cups too and Auba may be the better option at times ... but that is a bit off yet

Auba is still the top scoring forward in the game and delivers also from the left. Laca not nailed, so Auba will sometimes play in the middle, sometimes on the left. And really unlucky not to get 2-3 ore goals last match, he's due for a haul.

Its a mixture of things, the media love of Klopp who so far has proved to be a trophy dodger, the fans banging on about Ramos for 2 months after the CL final, Klopp blaming wind and grass length for losing.....shall I go on

I want to know where you're encountering these people, its not on something silly like twitter I hope.
Media love Klopp for obvious reasons. The Ramos thing was so very tough to take. Don't know why anyone would get upset with us for being gutted.

No not Twitter, every day life. Losing a final is gutting, making it a one man witch hunt is frankly pathetic. Pep lost several games over Christmas but I didn't hear any excuses about wind or grass length. This thread started with someone being surprised how many neutrals didn't want Liverpool to win it, that in itself is self indulgent, why do you expect more neutrals to want Liverpool to win??

For what it's worth I'm a neutral and I'd like to see Liverpool win it. The animosity from the anti-Liverpool voices I hear often seems pretty disproportionate and more about their fans than the actual team. Generalisations that would get you into trouble if applied to race or gender abound. Tribalism at its weirdest.
