Eliteserien Fantasy 2019 fixture analysis and Double Gameweek chip strategy

Managers need to make themselves aware of how best to handle the Eliteserien Fantasy 2019 fixture schedule.

In this final article of our preview coverage, we will have a look at the strategy for handling the early Double Gameweek, and any we might get in the future, as well as picking apart a rather helpful season ticker.

Double Gameweek 2 strategy

There seem to be two different approaches to the start of the season in Eliteserien.

The first option is setting up a team that ignores Double Gameweek 2, and uses the new “rich uncle” chip during that week to allow unlimited spending on it.

This allows you to build your team around the teams with the best opening fixtures outside of the Double, as well as planning for the long term.

It will also give you an optimal team for the Double Gameweek too, as you can get all the best, expensive options from Molde, Brann and Vålerenga, as well as Rosenborg.

The downside of this strategy is with the early Double Gameweek you can set your team up pretty well for the doubles from the start anyway. So is it a waste of this brilliant chip using it so early?

You can fit in more heavy hitters than you can without Rich Uncle, so you need these extra premium players to do well in the Double Gameweek and with Eliteserien being an unpredictable league, there are absolutely no guarantees.

So, the second option is to build a team from the start with Double Gameweek 2 in mind.

This could be a viable strategy as Molde, Brann and Vålerenga all have options that will be popular picks regardless of the double Gameweek.

Vålerenga have good fixtures on either side of the double. Brann and Molde don’t have the best fixtures in Gameweek 1 or 3, but they still have some solid options that potentially could do well regardless of the fixtures.

The big upside of this strategy is that it allows you to use Attack! Attack! or Two Captains in the Double Gameweek.

Vilhjalmson has looked good in pre-season, and Ohi will most likely be the first choice at Molde.

Sadly, there are question marks around Bamba. He’s been struggling with a back injury in pre-season, and he doesn’t seem to be as nailed-on as the first choice as some seem to think. There are rumours he might be benched in Gameweek 1 against Odd.

Kastrati is a doubt for Kristiansund as well, so I’m not sure there’s a good enough third striker pick for Attack Attack!

Two captains could be a better alternative, with Eikrem arguably as the standout captaincy pick.

Other Molde attackers like Hestad and Ohi could be the second captaincy choice, as well as Wormgoor from Brann or one of the Vålerenga attackers.

The downside of this strategy is that it is likely to require an early Wildcard, assuming you’re loading up on alternatives from the four teams with a Double Gameweek.

Rich Uncle could come in handy later in the season though, and if you can nail your Two Captains (or Attack! Attack!) it might be an equally good strategy.

This approach could also leave you with a worse team for Gameweek 1 and 3 compared to those using Rich Uncle.

What about later Double Gameweeks?

The Norwegian Football Association allow the clubs to ask for up to two game to be moved due to European involvement.

Molde and Brann have taken advantage of this possibility, while Rosenborg and Haugesund have not bothered.

This is the reason for the early Double Gameweek, and this means Brann, Vålerenga and Kristiansund experience Blanks in Gameweek 15.

If any of the four teams advance to the third qualifying round of the Europa League (or Champions League in Rosenborg’s case), they can ask for their GW17 fixtures to be moved.

Molde have already done this, which means their home meeting with Sarpsborg has been moved to Gameweek 15. This means Sarpsborg have two fixtures in Gameweek15, while Molde have a blank in Gameweek 17 instead of Gameweek 15.

Brann have already confirmed that their home game against Stabæk in Gameweek 17 will be moved if they advance in the Europa League qualifiers, presumably to round three.

They enter in the first round, and because of their low seeding, they will probably get a tough draw in round two. I don’t think Haugesund can realistically reach round three as they will have the same low seeding as Brann and have even less quality in their squad.

Rosenborg have not asked for their games to be moved in recent seasons, but we can’t rule it out this year.

There is a chance they didn’t ask for their Gameweek 15 fixture to be moved because they’ll most likely be drawn against a lesser team due to their decent UEFA club coefficient.

It’s more likely that they will face tougher teams in round three of the Champions League qualifiers, as well as in the playoff round.

Could this mean their Gameweek 17 home fixture against Tromsø and their Gameweek 19 home meeting with Stabæk could be moved? It’s an option, but I wouldn’t put too much into it at this stage.

There is also the Under-20s World Cup, which most likely will lead to Stabæk blanking twice in Gameweeks 9 and 10. Three of Stabæk’s key players are likely to be involved for Norway Under-20s during the tournament, and as a result, they can ask for these games to be moved if all three are indeed called up.

The matches at risk are with Vålerenga at home and against Odd away. If Stabæk vs Vålerenga is put into Gameweek 15 it would be the same case as with Sarpsborg and Molde. Vålerenga would blank in Gameweek 9 instead of Gameweek 15, and Stabæk will be the only team having a Double Gameweek in Gameweek 15 out of those two.

Vålerenga stand out with their early fixtures. They face newly promoted Mjøndalen in Gameweek 1 and Tromsø in Gameweek 3, as well as having two fixtures in the early Double Gameweek. Regardless of what strategy you are looking at, a triple-up on Vålerenga players seems to be justified.

Another team with an interesting opening schedule is Odd. They have three home games in the first four fixtures, with the away game against Rosenborg being played in Gameweek 2. For those considering the Rich Uncle strategy, you’ll get three straight home games from Odd players and avoid the away fixture against Rosenborg.

The defending champions also have a favourable opening program, with Bodø/Glimt away in Gameweek 1, Odd at home in Gameweek 2, Stabæk away in Gameweek 3 and Strømsgodset at home in Gameweek 4. All of those are fixtures you’d expect them to win, and there should be chances of both clean sheets and goals.

Molde start the season with three away games in the first four Gameweeks, as well as two favourable home games in the Double Gameweek. Their opening fixture at Sarpsborg is expected to be a really tough game for them. They also have to face Rosenborg at home in Gameweek 5, which is expected to be the toughest home game of the year.

Brann also have a tough start with Odd away, as well as an away game in the Western Norway derby against newly promoted team Viking. They do have two very favourable home games in Gameweek 2 though, like Molde.

Sarpsborg are expected to be one of the top teams this season and have some favourable fixtures in the middle of tough games versus Molde in Gameweek 1 and Rosenborg in Gameweek 6.

With home games versus Lillestrøm and Mjøndalen, as well as away games to Bodø/Glimt and a Haugesund team in a defensive crisis there is hope for returns from the Sarpsborg players.

Ranheim have been given a kind run of games to open the season. They are expected to struggle at the bottom of the league this year and have to get the most out of these opening fixtures to stay out of trouble.

They have home fixtures to Tromsø, Haugesund and Viking in the first five Gameweeks, as well as away games at Lillestrøm and Kristiansund. There could be some differential bargains to be had there.

      What a joke this is.

My mate in my ML has Ejuke, Tripic, Layouni and Eikrem.

Ejuke 3 BPS whilst no goal involvement. Tripic apparently does more than Hoiland and Thorstvedt combined. Layouni gets a goal against best team in the league. And Eikrem outscoring Akintola.

      Great stuff.

I see it's not just in FPL where you can get absolutely shafted.

Not even one GW in and I'm put off haha.

      How rubbish.

Ejuke 3 bonus with no returns is the norm tbf, he just loves to dribble around the opposition box

Knew I should've stuck to my guns about having no Rosenborg players.

Akintola has cost me so many points.

RBK had a total of seven shots and only one on target . Keeping Meling at his price will be hard to justify but the transfer to change him is not what I was hoping for.
Keeping the faith for one more game week and then WC if nothing changes.
The unpredictability of this league is what makes it interesting, and there has been lot of interesting today.
May you live in interesting times is the old Chinese curse I believe.

Glad I avoided RBK players. Losing 5 out of 6 in pre season and hiring a manager who has the complete opposite philosophy of what a RBK manager should have. Unless they change manager I don't think I'll be touching any RBK attackers anytime soon.

Horneland's philosophy is hard work and defensive structure, how he ended up in a club that prides itself on free flowing attacking football baffles me. If he applies his own philosophy he won't last long at the club because the expectations aren't only winning but you have to win with style. So he's trying to adapt and play a brand of football he isn't comfortable with and that's never going to work either. Catch 22.

"Hard work and defensive structure" plays two big strikers including Nicklas Bendtner and two lightweight attack-minded midfielders

My team is set up for RU next GW (which I'm kinda regretting), but I will not include any RBK players other than potentially Meling by the looks of it. I'm not ruling out a GW3 WC either, if needed – as Meling and Akintola looks a wrong move. The Knudtzon punt didn't help either.

For non-Fantasy reasons I'm also worried as a Rosenborg fan. This doesn't look like a top three side.

The nerve of Horneland to sub Akintola off after getting him to hug the right touchline all game rather than drift into central positions where he was so dangerous last season, can't believe it's the same coach who got the best out of him

Surely this has to be their lineup when everyone's fit

          Hansen
          Hedenstad, Reginiussen, Valsvik, Meling
          Jensen, Konradsen
          Akintola, Åsen, Adegbenro
          Søderlund

Good at cutting in from the right but not as good as Akintola. Not sure about playing him on the left but Meling has the engine to do all the crossing on that side. Let Åsen be the playmaker he was at Tromsø and have players like Adegbenro who can make runs off him and a lone striker.

No expert but Helland has always struck me as one of the best in the league, when fit.
Still to be seen if Akintola + Rosenborg are a fit, but you're right that hard to see how they all fit in playing to strengths

Helland has been playing on the left pretty much all pre-season. I think he'll be in there as long as he's fit.

It was either Eikrem or Akintola for this GW and those who went with Eikrem got rewarded.

Even more annoying was the fact Eikrem didn't score until quite late on and Akintola was taken off before 70 minutes.

Eikrem surely comes in now for the DGW.

Eikrem, Hestad and Ohi for the double sounds about right?

62 with Boli to go so far.

RichUncle for the DGW is the overall consensus, ain't it?

Already have several DGW player in my team, thinking of just doing Akintola->Eikrem or something? Or is RichUncle a must?

                  Kwarasey
                  Meling Wormgoor Adekugbe
                  Finne Akintola Lokberg Ingbreitsen
                  Boli Ohi Strand-Larsen.

                  Anrebott Diop Sivertsen Sell

Would've considered Boli->VIlhalmsson if it werent for the fact that I already have triple Valeranga haha.

Rich uncle is probably the best With that team. Unless you do a -8 (eks: Kwarasey, Akintola, Boli - McDermot, Eikrem, Wilhjalmsson) and play 2 captains (Eikrem and Wilhjalmsson)

I'm unlikely to use Rich Uncle, i set my team up for DGW2 from the start and got lucky with Wormgoor, Strand, Adekugbe, Vilhjalmsson and Eikrem.

Have 11 DGW players who started for their teams and a free transfer to boot. So no Rich Uncle for me, will be playing Attack Attack or Double Captain instead.

There's also a case that this early in we don't have much to go on regarding who the best premium options are (which it seems is the basis of RU)

Not sure what to do for GW2. Should I get rid of Bamba and Diop to Kastrati (if fit) and Strand/rolantsson and play spissrush? Other ideas?

                    Wormgoor - Acosta - Haraldseid - Adekugbe
                    Eikrem - Finne - Diop
                    Ohi - Wilhjalmsson - Bamba

11 really... but I have Strand Larsen and Risa on the bench so undecided if I'll play them instead of Diop & Psyche

I have 9 with Assmudsen in midfield & Lehne Olsen.

Is Petter Strand in midfield from Brann worth a punt ?

I'm undecided... depends when I want to use my WC.

Don't really fancy wasting a FT just for the sake of a DGW player if they're not likely to return any points anyway, but if I see a player that has a points potential then I'll go for it.

Looks like I’ll be going with 10 myself.

Have already gone Akintola to Eikrem and need to decide whether I’m playing Psyche or Hoiland.

Currently thinking Hoiland makes more sense as Psyche could very realistically return just 4 points from those two games.

For the DGW I can have 11 players if I start Psyche ahead of Hoiland.

                                  Two questions:

                                  1) Hoiland -> Amang -4 worth it? Or just play Psyche
                                  2) Keep Hoiland/Psyche and go Hestad -> Berisha -4

I’m not against taking hits at all, but it maybe feels like it’s an unnecessary risk.

Genuinely think Psyche with 2 games is not much better than Hoiland with 1, so that feels like a coin toss to me.

(Already did Akintola to Eikrem as my transfer)

Don't think I'd do either. Amang currently not appealing longer term (to me), and unsure why you'd sell Hestad esp for a hit

Yeah I’m probably just going to play Hoiland instead of Psyche and leave it as 10 for the DGW.

Was only considering getting rid of Hestad as a high-risk high-reward strat but seems very unnecessary.

Will be moving him on in weeks to come though I think.

Still not sure who is my second captain along with Eikrem. Currently between Worm and Vilhjalmson. After GW1 both seem viable but surely with CS potential The Worm gets the nod.

Could work but I don't know enough about how Kristiansund will setup when Kastrati's fit again. Amang had his moments last season, but not sure about him.

Haven't decided btw 2 captains and 3 fwds inc Strand Larsen.

I think Høiland is worth keeping against TIL if you're not playing Attack Attack but I owned him when Viking were fighting relegation in 2017 and he had loads of great chances that he just couldn't put away, looked the same from the highlights of the first game here.

Yeah I think I'll stick with Hoiland to be honest.

He looked alright against KBK but McDermott seemed to get the better of him on pretty much every occasion. I doubt that will be the same against Tromso.

Bit annoyed I didn't go with Bytyqi. Thought about him quite a bit but didn't feel too confident putting two Viking attackers in my team.

                                              Surprised Thorstvedt wasn't that involved.

                                              Bytyqi did look lively.

One chance, one well taken goal. Technically he's in a different league. He'll score quite a few on individual brilliance alone and clean up baps regularly. He's certainly capable of justifying that tag.

The only thing that puts me off him is who he plays for.

Surely players like Ohi, Soderlund, Bamba, Vilhjalmsson and even potentially Skalevik are more likely to do just as well as him relative to their value purely because of who they play for.

I might be completely off-base by saying that, but I suppose only time will tell.

Ohi, Bamba and Vilhjalmsson can definitely come close especially if the latter is on penalties. I think a big part of Skålevik's appeal last year was his low price and playing for Brann but he's not as talented as the others, Sarpsborg created a lot against Molde though. Still not sure if Søderlund will get enough minutes.

I understand the rationale that the better clubs likely to create more chances. Those clubs also generally have a greater array of attacking options which mean the chances are spread around.

On the other hand lesser clubs might generate less chances, but they can sometimes be spread around less players - so those players end up being competitive FPL options

As a broad generalisation I think club is more important to defenders than attackers

That's probably the highest it's ever been at the start of a season, I think previously it was about 30-40k and usually ends up about 60-70k

Brann vs. Stabæk moved from 11 August (GW17) to 21 July (probably GW15 as it's the same day Molde vs. Sarpsborg was moved to).

So it looks like Sarpsborg and Stabæk will have a DGW15. And rather than a BGW15 Brann will have a single game again.

Just leaves Kristiansund and Vålerenga blanking in GW15.

Highlights here. The 3-5 minute clips are my fave, can go a through a whole GW in a spare half hour and get a feel of who's playing well. They seem to be having some trouble formatting the video names but they also have individual 30 videos which are just the goals from each match. And for some reason longer videos which have highlights followed by a load of slow motion footage?

                                                McDermott

Dont think Kristiansund will get CS in any of the games, so is it better to invest in SGW keeper/defender to complete the XI instead?

Defender maybe if it's someone with attacking threat. Wouldn't bother with a SGW keeper, McDermott should get enough save points to make him worth selecting.

I'm going for Meling over Psyche i reckon. McDermott fine in goal - should get 4/5 points minimum even without a clean sheet or pen save - there's always a chance of either haha.

Psyche is a popular pick because he's 4.0, not because he's the best defender pick from Kristiansund. I wouldn't even consider him on RU when we have defenders with decent attacking upside in Aasbak and Ulvestad at the same team.

I also agree on McDermott over a SGW keeper. This league is way to unpredictable and I can't see any close to certain CS.

If you take the McDermott's PPG x2 he's fair ahead of the PPG of every goalkeeper. He should outscore most SGW keepers even with no CS.

As my third defender (currently have no room for Vålerenga/Molde/Brann there) I'm between Meling, Stølås, Ulvestad and Aasbak. Don't feel certain about any of them so might just roll the dice on a DGWer.

The SGW defender that would tempt me the most is probably Sell if he starts on RW. Far from a given, but he looked very dangerous when coming on vs. Vålerenga and could easily had a goal and an assist. On paper I'd say it's a good home fixture, but B/G looked really good vs. Rosenborg.

btw No price rise or fall so far. There were complaints that it was too easy to make money last season but surely there have been enough transfers to effect some key players?

Likely to start or likely sub with Bamba and Berisha in the picture?

Not a regular starter imo. Berisha could still play forward or mid imo but Johansen could come into play later in the season.

Is it worth bringing in Bamba for Boli in GW2?

Boli has no double and three tough ( ish) fixtures, and we do not know how Brann will set up. Bamba is not that great as a player or a fantasy asset, I would wait and see for now. He is not in my team though but using a FT to shift him?

There were reports he was leaving in the transfer window for a lower division league. Not sure if it happened

Hope you're not considering him. Genuinely up there with the worst 'strikers' I've ever since. If I was the manager I would much rather start with a traffic cone up top than have Kjelsrud anywhere near the pitch.

58 is a respectable start in a very unpredictable league imo. The season is long and a good OR is not dependant on GW1

Sounds like Strømsgodset are trying to get their GW9 and GW10 games moved as well. Makes me wonder if Viking could do the same?

Turns out the clubs can ask for games to be moved in GW9 and GW10 if one player that have started 2 of the last 3 are called up to the U20 WC.

Stabæk (Vetlesen, Børkeeiet and Brynhildsen) vs. Odd and Vålerenga
Strømsgodset (Hove) vs. Tromsø and Ranheim
VIking (Thorstvedt) vs. Molde and Sarpsborg
Mjøndalen (Faye Lund) vs. Rosenborg and Haugesund

Hove has not been in the last U20 squad, but he's apparently in contention for a call up. I would assume Strand Larsen is the same, he's been playing for U19 recently. Sarpsborg face Ranheim and Viking.

Just because the teams can ask for their games to be moved, it doesn't mean they will. Stabæk have confirmed they will, and it sounds like Strømsgodset will if Hove is picked.

What a bloody mess this might be. Now I kinda regret not saving my RU.
