How the FFScout captain poll winners performed this season

The Fantasy Football Scout community enjoyed a season of largely reliable captaincy decisions in 2018/19.

As you can see from the table below, across the 38 Gameweeks, the winner of the Captain Poll secured attacking returns on 28 occasions.

That meant 10 blanks for the voters with three Gameweeks being the longest streak without a return.

Average: 7.1

The 38 different captaincies accumulated for a total of 270 points, the highest being Sergio Aguero‘s (£12.0m) 20-point haul in Gameweek 2, the lowest Paul Pogba‘s (£8.6m) -1 in Gameweek 29.

That averaged out at 7.1 points per Gameweek across the season.

Aguero proved to be the most popular with the masses this season, as he won our captain poll on 13 different occasions.

His longest streak of victories was between Gameweeks 4 and 7 when he won it four times in a row, returning each time.

Close behind Aguero was Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) who was chosen by Scout voters as the best captain candidate on 10 different occasions.

Harry Kane (£12.6m) was the people’s choice for five of the 38 Gameweeks, including his ill-fated Gameweek 8 meeting with Cardiff, in which he failed to score and was booked for a one-point return.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.8m), Eden Hazard (£11.0m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.7m) all won the poll twice, with mixed success rates.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané (£10.3m), Pogba, Richarlison (£6.4m) and Son Heung-min (£8.6m) all came away from the 2018/19 season with one vote win each.

Of those four, Mané was the only one to score more than four points in the week they were the most popular captain pick.

The way you voted in the 2018/19 largely coincided with how our Scout Squad and Scout Picks panels thought too.

This season, only on three occasions was there a player who won the captain poll but were denied entry into the Scout Picks.

They were Aubameyang for the Gameweek 16 visit of Huddersfield to Arsenal, Aguero in Double Gameweek 25 and the Manchester City forward again on the final day of the season.

The most popular captain in an individual Gameweek this year was Aguero in Gameweek 7 ahead of Manchester City hosting Brighton.

The forward pulled in a 60% share of the vote, a huge amount considering the average percentage share of a winning candidate this year was 37.4%.

The Citizens actually only won by a 2-0 scoreline that week, with the forward scoring once before coming off in the 65th minute.

The candidate with the lowest winning score was Pogba in Gameweek 29.

Just 23.2% of the voters selected him as their best choice for the visit of Southampton to Old Trafford and were punished by that -1 score.

I could have done so much better 🙁

But I'm not sure if I made bad decisions or just didn't get as much luck as I might have. I think part of it was that I wasn't brave enough on switching it, and that I played a little bit to EO when I shouldn't have as much

This is definitely a good idea and I would have liked to have assessed this over the course of the season. However, as we didn’t always come to a conclusive candidate it’s hard to do it as thoroughly as we have done for the poll winners. We are hoping to include an official captain choice in the Scout Picks next season so we can definitely review how well we did on that front after 2019/20!

How does this compare to the best 'set and forget' captain pick for the season?

I guessing this would be Salah as the highest points scorer in the game .... with 259 points

    259 / 38 = 6.82 average.

    Captain Poll average = 7.1 * 38 = 269

So we didn't really gain much for all the effort of guessing the best one each week .... 10 points. 🙂

After he scored so well in 2017/18 he would have been the obvious choice though, so it would have been a easy, stress free decision rather than agonising over it every week. I guessing there were quite a few 'ghost ship' teams still doing reasonably well long into the season because of this (Salah being top scorer 2 years running)

I veer away from the scoutpicks on this site if I think there is a better option.
I ended up with 577 an average of 15 per week.
I find that people talk themselves into the same captaincy as others on here.
Without looking at the other options.

The really good players nailed the captaincy and get about 100 more.
Mark somehow managed it by just picking Salah/Sterling/Hazard bar on four occasions

btw I've halved it and taken the triple captain score away so that it's a fair comparison with the table on this article (although they have no autosub for GW14)

but yeah - Mark did really well - think he's on to something with cheap forwards and heavy midfield captaincy options (they get clean sheet points which helps), you could probably rotate captaincy really well between Salah and Sterling next year and not bother with anyone else at all

I was shocked he used those three so often. Plus no Mane. And on 13 times his captains only scored 1-6 points.
But he hit it big 22 times.
                16-24 points - 13 times, 25-40 - 5 times and more than 41 four times.
That was the difference between his score and mine (took similar amount of hits)

He used 7 captains in total and I used 15.
I think they are two extremes.
In between those might be the right way to do it 9/10 captains. Less risks but a bit of risk?

think I mess around with too many too, wasting FTs chopping and changing them also - think next year I'll invest more in defence and less up front, in theory you could get TAA, Laporte, Mane, Sterling and possibly not change them all season

Because I'm a massive nerd, I worked out this for my own team.

Totaled 325 points from captains this season. Hazard and Sterling my highest average per game (11.5 and 13 respectively).

Salah was interesting - very consistent at home (8 games at an average of 11 points each) but awful away (4 games at 4.3 points average).

But my biggest failure was DGWs - 19 from 3 DGW captains!

Choose a captain who is explosive, plays for a Top 6 club and is at home IMO.

Narrows it down to Kane, Aguero, Salah, Sterling and Hazard pretty much every week.

Sorry if it has been posted elsewhere, but how does the average captain score of the captain's poll (7.1) compare to the average captain score of the top 10k? If it's possible to calculate that.

I imagine they won't be worlds apart but it would be a nice indicator on how much influence we give to the poll.

Thanks, hope everyone is having a good week.

Actually, Leroy Sane topped the poll at 1130 in GW 25 (sometimes people keep voting after the deadline).

I know this, because I couldn’t decide who to captain, so outsourced my decision to the poll, and fatefully brought in Sane for Hazard, and gave him the armband instead of Aguero for a loss of about 40 points.

No more than about 50 votes in it - aguero led all week, sane overtook him on Saturday morning. I often use the poll as a good guide to the best captain when I can’t decide - this one week it let me down in style!

Which player do you wish you avoided this season?

For me, I had Mitrovic way more than was warranted. Arnautovic was also one I was very frustrated with and i'd throw Richarlison in there too. Even though they scored well sometimes I seemed to miss all their hauls, and held them all much longer than I should have

Mitrovic - Had him way too long, 31 games averaging only 3.7 points over that period

      Son - 7 games, averaged 2.7

Sterling - 6 games, averaged 4 points. For his price that is terrible can never catch him right

I agree Son was pretty bad at the end of the season ... signed him when Kane got injured ... went on a run of blanks and then got a red card -2 in GW37 just to rub it in.

Near the start of the season (GW3 or 4) I fell into the trap of swapping the injured Richarlison (who had started the season really well) for Theo Walcott! (what was I thinking)

Then at the end of the season (GW36) I was one of those who signed Firmino (for a -4 cos I was sick of having Lacazette) five minutes before news broke of him being injured. He never played for me and I was forced to sell him (for another -4) in GW38. Luckily I brought in Aubameyang (c) for the final day as a replacement.

Easily Firmino I signed him AFTER the press conference a few weeks ago gw34. Then after that he was injured suddenly.
I took out Vardy who got 16 thankfully gray from the bench eased the pain a bit.

But the real sickening bit was if I waited for Friday and the late Frirmino rumours.
I would have got TAA instead of Tripper.

I worked it out that move would have put me into the top 2k (would have got some money in tough mini-league)

      2 stick out for me.

Kamara after scoring a couple goals for Fulham I brought him in a few weeks later the GW he missed the penalty against Huddersfield. He then had a big fall out with Mitrovic and only played a further 29 minutes before being shipped out by his club. It took me a lot longer to get rid of him after that due to other players needing gone.

Kolasinac is the other. He had such good stats and looked a real threat when I brought him in for GW 34 and he only started 2 of the final 6 games. Not trusting Emery next year!

Lacazette. Got him on first WC GW6, kept until about GW18.

Great fixture run for Arsenal and started OK with goal vs Everton, assist vs Watford, brace vs Fulham but it quickly went downhill fast.

Captained him at home vs Huddersfield after he was rested (i think) in the EL; only to see him hooked at HT after missing a glorious chance and having another goal chalked off for offside.

He then got a goal + bps against Man Utd (I think) only for it to be reduced to an assist after full-time.

Watching him during that run was tortuous. Moved out wide a lot, early subbing... Auba racking up points instead of him.

Meanwhile, Jimenez was scoring points basically every week for about 4m less. Pretty much jiggered my season! Lesson learnt though. Emery's a troll man.

Not including some truly terrible 1 or 2 week punts (Barkley I'm looking at you) Leroy Sane and Marco Arnautovic are the two that stand out. Bringing in Sane for that first double where he got 1 point cost me dearly when others had the captain armband on Kun. I brought in Arnie a couple of times but a combination of poor performances and injury meant I rarely got any returns from him and kept having to waste transfers to get rid. The lesson for me for next season is stick to reliable returns, especially in the mid price bracket rather than gambling on unfit or out of form players that have good (on paper) fixtures.

I always get drawn in to double gameweeks, so that’s an issue!

      Patricio 24 games avg 3.4
      Doherty 14 games Avg 3.5
      Coleman 10 games avg 2.5

These were my worst offenders, I stuck with Patricio far too long, got on Doherty too late and got off Coleman too early. Three totally different mistakes concerning defensive options which probably just highlights how bad I am at this aspect of the game as I always struggle back there.

Aubameyang was a nightmare for me. Had him from the start then sold him in GW8 as he'd got me 2 goals in 7 games and was an injury doubt. Sold him for Kane who had Cardiff at home and had just scored against Barcelona. Kane blanked against 10 man Cardiff whilst Aubameyang made a 28 minute substitute appearance and managed to get 2 goals 1 assist and 3 bonus. The next week Kane blanked against West Ham and Aubameyang got 2 goals and 3 bonus in a 29 minute appearance.

From GW8 to GW14 he went on a run of 8 goals and 63 points in 7 weeks.

I then bought him back and kept patience with him for 14 weeks during which time he got 6 goals and 67 points.

Sold him again in GW29 and from then until the end of the season he got 6 goals in his last 10 games.

All in all he scored 8 goals and 95 points whilst in my team ( 21 weeks at 4.5 ppg) and 14 goals and 110 points when not in my team (17 weeks at 6.5 ppg)

The mad thing is I'll do it again next season - he's an awesome striker who I managed to make some dreadful choices with.

I'm going with Aubameyang too. Started the season with him and then got rid before his good run. I clearly remember having (and keeping faith) with him over the game weeks where Aguero got his hattricks against Arsenal and Chelsea. He then even missed out through illness against Huddersfield. Cost me a lot of points.

Oh god, I think I'd blocked that part out. Did exactly the same - missed out on back to back hattricks and then he didn't even play the plum fixture. Terrible luck really.

Higuain, Vinagre, Kolasinac. Horrible picks. Vinagre didnt get a single CS and then I had to remove him earlier than expected as Jonny returned surprisingly early. Kola was benched every game I owned him and he was a stupid differential pick that would have been TAA. Just didnt pick TAA because all rivals had him and I needed to make up a lot of ground.

Had a few howlers, Pedro & Reid come to mind but it was the major change to GW1 team less than hour before deadline that defined my dreadful season.
Out went Mendy, Robertson, Alonso & Mane to squeeze in Salah who I was convinced was not good value.
Mee Bamba Coleman along with a downgrade of Mahrez were the mistakes 5hat came in.
37 weeks to recover in fairness but just couldn't get going after that.

Wilson - brought him twice, both times after he had hauled against Huddersfield. Firstly he picked up an injury which Howe failed to mention before Liverpool at home, switched to Jiménez after 3 weeks. Brought him back for home games in 31 and 33 either side of FH, he blanked in both and proceeded to score 15pts in GW34 after wildcarding him out. 5 games, 4 at home, 7 points.

Notable mention to TAA who I made an early transfer to bring in, he'd played 90 minutes after the warmup scare in the previous game, but he was out for a month and stuck on my bench. To top it off sold him on GW34 wildcard so missed his incredible end of season run.

Stuck way too long with Alonso. Not sure why. Surprised to see on anewpla he actually averaged 4.4 ppg for me.
Maximized Christensen last season and never worried about it.

Never had a season where I've spent more transfers on keepers - had 8 different keepers inc. WCs and FH.
Always 1 or 2 decent cheapies but this season they've all lacked sustained consistency. Keeper score of 3,58 ppg I think is my worst ever.

Which promoted players are of interest? I’m looking at the following so far:

Enda Stevens SHU - 45 appearances, left wing back so contingent upon him being classified as a defender. 41 goals conceded (joint best), 4 goals and 6 assists. 4.5 would be a bargain.

Dean Henderson SHU - 46 apps, useful young goalkeeper and I think he will gain enough save points and clean sheets could be periodic at Bramall Lane. 4.5 in rotation with another keeper perhaps.

Teemu Pukki NOR - FW - 43 apps, 29 goals, 9 assists. 20% chance conversion isn’t bad. 6.0 hopefully, given he doesn’t have Mitrovic’s reputation.

Buendia/Emi - MF - 35 apps, 8 goals, 12 assists. Norwich didn’t win a game without him. 22 years old and still developing. 5.5 would be good business.

While there are no statistical stand-outs from Leeds, Derby’s Harry Wilson (MF) has weighed in with 15 goals and 3 assists in 36 starts and if they gain promotion I assume they can keep him. 5.5 might be too high though.

Equally, Tammy Abraham (still only 21) should be playing EPL football next season one way or another, and 26 goals & 3 assists in 39 appearances suggests another bite at the cherry could be more successful than 5 goals in 15 apps (16 substitute apps too). 6.0 should be good value.

Am I missing anyone as things stand?

Enda Stevens is one I am certainly interested to see what he is priced at, he could be as good as Doherty was this year! However because he is a WB and off a good attacking season i can see him being priced at 5m.

His team mate John Egan is another I am looking at, he only got 1 goal and 1 assist this season but he has scored quite a few goals in seasons before that. And is likely to be cheaper than Stevens.

I don't know much about the Norwich players at all but there would surely be some options from the Villa team if they get promoted.

As a Norwich fan I'd say avoid all of them to begin with. They scored a lot (obviously will be much tougher to do in PL) but conceded quite easily too (therefore will do even more in PL).
I think they're going to get tonked next season.

I think Norwich can learn from Fulham’s disastrous season. You have a young defence, so a few experienced additions could stand you in good stead, as Buendia, Pukki and Stiepermann should offer a threat at the other end. Good luck!

Yeah I’m assuming Sheffield Utd won’t really solely on Madine and Sharp! At 33, Sharp could have a Glen Murray season but it’s highly unlikely. It will be interesting to see how they buy, Maupay got 25 at Brentford so would be worth a closer look, while Che Adams has attracted interested. Rodriguez and Gayle might not stick around at WBA, though interest would surely be minimal there.

      4. Kemar Roofe – Leeds

Vrancic only started 3 games from February (the final two inclusive) and mainly appeared as a sub. Roofe might be interesting if he continues to develop though I imagine a Leeds promotion will lead to a huge overhaul of playing staff.

Vrancic picked up an injury in February having been in great form, Kenny McLean came in and played well and Farke didn't change it when Vrancic regained fitness.

Vrancic is a player I like but Norwich didn't really have a settled midfield two, Trybull and Tettey are the more defensively minded with Vrancic, McLean and Leitner the more forward thinking, I think it's difficult to know Farke preferred two as they were rarely all fit at the same time (McLean was injured for the first half of the season, Leitner during the middle, Vrancic and Tettey towards the end) so best avoided from FPL point of view.

Aware of Hernandez’ Indian summer with his assists and goals this time out but at 34 years old it is asking a lot to better his previous 2 and 3 goals in the Prem. Castilla may be a good keeper but this doesn’t look like a tight defence to me. As for Roofe, I’ve mentioned that he might be interesting but he hasn’t hit the heights of Pukki and Abraham. Similar record in terms of minutes and goals to Assombalonga who I wouldn’t go anywhere near.

You’re right though, they might well be essential next season!

  11. Sheffield United's approach

For those interested, here are some thoughts on Sheffield United’s approach ahead of their return to the Premier League, and a few players who are, in my opinion, worth monitoring.

Sheffield United’s manager is Chris Wilder, a Blades fan, who’s approach is “front-foot football”. They play a fluid, possession-based 3-5-2 system with overlapping centre-backs.

Those overlapping centre-backs are Jack O’Connell and Chris Basham. Both players bomb forward and overlap the wing-backs, which can be seen in this excellent analysis by Stewart England:

    https://www.footballdna.co.uk/features/sheffield-united-3-5-2-attacking-overlapping-centre-backs/

It’s rare to see centre-backs so high up the pitch in open play and quite exciting from an FPL point of view. My preferred pick, Jack O’Connell, has returned 3 goals and 3 assists this season.

The two wing-backs also push up high, with the left-sided Enda Stevens the more attacking of the two. His improved delivery has seen him contribute 6 assists with 4 goals.

Both players, in my opinion, should be on our watchlists going into the new season.

Other options include the creative Ollie Norwood, who is more of a technical passer and is on the majority of set pieces (8 assists, 3 goals) whilst Billy Sharp, the club captain and expected budget striker, has hit the back of the net 23 times. Lethal in the box, he’s the focal point of their attack and a real poacher. It’ll be interesting to see if he is given the opportunity (he’s 33 years-old) to thrive in the Premier League. I personally have my doubts, so often we see Championship level forwards struggle to make the step up, but United’s transfer activity this summer should give us an indication as to how much Wilder plans to use him.

Whilst Sheffield United do throw up some interesting FPL options, I do advise an element of caution with their assets. Despite similarities to Nuno Espírito Santo’s Wolves team (a tactically astute manager with a back-three system rising from the Championship, sound familiar doesn’t it!), I’m unsure if they can replicate their achievements in their first season back, largely down to player quality, but that isn’t to say they can’t throw up some useful assets.

Thanks for reading. If there’s enough interest, I’ll follow this up with a look at Norwich City next week and eventually, the play-off winners!

Great post. Another player I think could be of interest is the goalkeeper Henderson. Not a very exciting pick, but will likely be a solid option for those who like to have a cheap set and forget keeper.

Enda Stevens would be my pick of the defenders were he to be priced at 4.5, but given FPL priced Douglas and Smith at 5 in the past two seasons I have my doubts.

Henderson is a good shout. I avoided including him in my analysis as he's now back at Man Utd, but I read some comments recently by Ole that he think he needs a season playing in the top flight which suggests another loan.

If Enda Stevens starts at 5.0 it'd put me off. The appeal of these guys is that they should be priced at 4.5 and taking a punt on them GW1 shouldn't be too risky.

great post and insight. As a Doncaster fan I have a soft spot for Billy Sharp but I do believe the Championship is his level (like Gayle or Rhodes). I'd be very surprised to see him leading the line in the prem but I do hope I am proved wrong.

I agree mate, so many fail to make the step up - Gayle and Rhodes are good examples, David Nugent and Danny Graham also spring to mind!

      Fantastic analysis, thank you.

Overlapping centre backs sounds pretty novel, this in intruiging. I feel it could go either way though, and I feel its more likely that a centre back the wrong side of 30 is going to be stranded upfield when an attacking move breaks down (leaving his fellow defenders hopelessly exposed), than it is he chips in with multiple goals and assists when going up a division.....

I'd certainly be interested in you taking a look at Norwich and Villa/Leeds/Derby next week 🙂

Cheers! Yes it'll be intriguing to see. I do like Wilder though, think he's one of the most underrated managers around, so I'd back him to make it work, albeit maybe a slightly more cautious version now they're in the top tier.

Yeah I must admit I know very little about him, going to try and read up on them and the other promoted sides over the summer. So in your opinion they're more of an attacking side than a defensive one? I.e. more of a Fulham than a Cardiff? (if using this seasons propoted sides as an example).

I think they're a pretty balanced unit. They scored 78 goals this season (fourth behind Norwich, West Brom and Villa) but had the best defensive record along with Boro. If you were to ask me now who'll finish higher next season, the champions Norwich or runners-up Sheffield United, I'd back the latter.

Very interesting read - thanks FFS.

Well, that is a pretty decent result and it shows that, for the most part, we know what we are doing when we pick captains as a community. Is there the probability equivalent of "one stat to rule them all " though? is there a source of information that could outperform our selection processes which factor in all sorts of things including assist potential and extra points for midfielders?

    Well, maybe!

The site FPL Bet (no affiliation 🙂 ) collates anytime goalscorer odds every weeks from a number of bookies. They choose a team every week and the captain is always* the player with the best anytime odds. They then try and build the best team they can afford based on odds but this is a little more subjective and harder to quantify.

Below is their list of captains for most of the season except for two weeks over Christmas when they must have taken a break. Where there is no number next to the player it means that the captain poll picked the same player. Where there is a number it is the score of the best anytime goalscorer, and in brackets is how we did. The asterisk is that for one week Murray had the best odds but they went for Son, which is annoying, but I have corrected this week to Murray for completeness.

    1 - Salah
    2 - Aguero
    3 - Salah
    4 - Aguero
    5 - Aguero
    6 - Aguero
    7 - Aguero
    8 - Kane
    9 - Aguero
    10 - Salah
    11 - Aguero
    12 - Salah
    13 - Aguero 2 (FFS Richarlison 3)
    14 - Aguero
    15 - Kane
    16 - Aubameyang
    17 - Kane
    18 - Lacazette 5 (FFS Sterling 2)
    19 - Kane
    20 - Kane
    x
    x
    23 - Salah
    24 - Salah
    25 - Aguero
    26 - Salah
    27 - Aubameyang
    28 - Aguero 9 (FFS Salah 3)
    29 - Aguero 2 (FFS Pogba -1)
    30 - Aguero
    31 - Salah
    32 - Aguero
    33 - Hazard
    34 - Murray* 3 (FFS Son 4)
    35 - Aguero 2 (FFS Sterling 8)
    36 - Salah 19 (FFS Mane 13)
    37 - Aguero
    38 - Aguero

    Bookies + 44
    FFS + 32

The first thing to note is how good we are as a community at picking the "best" captain if anytime goalscorer odds are the best way of picking a captain (and I'm not saying that this really is the best method, merely observing that FFS and the bookies tend to agree on who is going to score big in any week).

The other thing to note is that, well, this year the bookies actually did better than us at predicting captains. And that's based solely on the odds of scoring rather than any other factors which might otherwise sway our decisions, the aforementioned assist potential being key amongst these. If we as a community had gone for the best anytime scorer we would have scored an extra 12 points across the 36 weeks for which we have data. 12.67 points when scaled up over the course of a season or almost exactly an extra point every three weeks. That would take the average up to 7.4 points per captain per gameweek.

It's not a huge difference but what is interesting to me is that it is based solely on one criterion (albeit a very complicated criterion calculated with very powerful algorithms, but then, we don't need to perform the calculation, the bookies do it for us!).

So what do you think - if in doubt about your captaincy choices in 19-20, would you go to the captaincy poll or see what our friends in the bookmakers do the thinking for us? 🙂

I usually base my benching decisions on clean sheet odds and usually look up anytime scorer odds when I can't decide by 2/3 options for captaincy - I've always thought that's better than the FFS poll (for a start people usually pick the best they own, not who is actually the 'best' that week)

Very good point - I had not factored in the fact that people tend to vote for those players who they own rather than think will do the best. I would expect most people to own most of the obvious candidates in a given week though,

That's interesting and good to know! There was a few times during the season when it was tough for me to pick between players for captaincy - I usually looked at RMT or who I thought other players in mini league would captain and decide from there. Might look to these type odds in future to add to the mix!

I usually check anytime goalscorer odds, but use a bit more sophisticated system. Mids get one extra point and have also chance to cs point. Assist potential is very important also and baps shouldn't be forgotten. There is also one thing to remember, game time security.

All these factors are important to use when deciding who to bench also. There are some different methods that can be used, but I am considering to start calculating them next season. Yet while captaincy between 2-4 different candidates is easy and comparing also own bench options, doing this with all possible bench players is hard work and needs to be compensated.

Maybe I should make a site for the purpose? Unless somebody wants to hire me to work with these and publish expected points on their own site 😉

Game time security is a very good point. Most anytime goalscorer odds seem to assume that all players will play the same amount of time and that simply isn't true. For example, when I was reviewing the figures earlier, Jesus was consistently amongst the favourites for anytime scorer when in reality he is lucky to get 15 minutes in any match.

As most AGS bets are voided if the player doesn't play it means there's no really much impetus on them to have odds that reflect the actual odds of them scoring, i.e. the odds reflect the likelihood of scoring over 90 mins

yes this game is really not complicated.
most individual players have statistically significant data for important things like goals, assists, etc. by christmas most teams have statistically significant data for chance creation + concession. if you watch a few games and keep track of bookmakers odds (which are a summary of this info anyway) then it's simply a case of optimising your transfers and good forward planning.

Similar to Ramsey going to Juventus on 400k per week, once a player is out of contract they hold all the cards and their agents are able to pimp them out to clubs willing to pay through the nose for wages on account of them being a 'free' transfer.

      1. SADIO SANÉ

yep, the player basically gets the transfer fee + their 'normal' wage - Herrera would get 40m easy, over a 4-year-contract that's 10m per year (200k a week) + 100k a week normal wage - and they can always sell him to recoup some

I've just done a bit of research about my own captain picks for this season.. it's pretty from reading, overall 232 points lost

There does seem to be a large dose of luck involved sometimes though. I could have gained an extra 105 points if I'd only chosen Sterling or Hazard on the correct weeks. So we're not always talking about crazy captain choices

That difference would have boosted my rank from 34k to 2.5k

    Meh, hindsight is 20 20 I guess..

FLPStatistico says i got 540pts from my captain which is surprising.

Now we're in the off season ive put some thoughts down on FFS.

    Things I love about FFS:
    - The articles, analysis, stats and opinion pieces have stepped up this season. I feel the quality and depth has improved and it seems like the right amount of info.
    - The videos are also great. It’s nice to be able to sit down with a cuppa and watch the Captaincy video Saturday morning.
    - The community forums. There's valuable info in between the RMTs.
    - Season Ticker. Invaluable. I don’t want to think how much time I sit looking at it.
    - The compare tool i use a lot. It's handy to be able to compare, say, Hazard at home vs. Sterling away when choosing a captain.
    - Being in Australia the time zone makes playing the game different. Originally from London I moved here and had to change my strategy. For example; depending on the time of year (daylight saving) price changes are at midday or 2pm, the 1230 Saturday game is 930pm or 1130pm, most games are in the middle of the night. FFS is great because I can get on at any time to view, read and assess.

    Opportunities 🙂

    - There must be an easier way to get your team into chat for a RMT without typing it out every time. A macro would save the community a gazillion hours. It could be an incentive to link your team to your profile.
    - The public stat tables are a mess. We can only sort by votes or date which means there's probably loads of useful tables lost in there.
The tables that are locked to a past season should be cleaned up – either add the year filter so they're relevant or remove them. I can't pick Suarez however obscene his Away Day stats were in 2016.
No-one uses tags; searching by the columns used in the table could be a better way so if I'm looking for xG I can see all the tables with that data and pick the ones I like.
Being able to favourite/bookmark/like tables into a 'like list' would be handy. Perhaps reset the vote count or track hits.
    - Templates for My Stats Tables – It’s quite onerous to create a table so when I get a structure I like I’d like to be able to save and re-use.
    - Linking teams to profiles. Being able to view someone’s team increases transparency which is important when we’re exchanging opinions and information in the forums.
By linking teams to profiles we unlock a huge amount of data and we could make more of it.
    - More tiles. By tiles I mean the number next to our avatars showing years on the site and the icon if you're a member. Examples tiles: HoF Ranking, Current Rank, even gw rank, team value, number of transfers, highest ever rank, etc.
    - A form ticker. Like the Season ticker for teams, but a backwards looking form ticker for players and/or teams (with filtering by home/away)? Just an idea.
    - Can we please log in on more than one device. Each time I use a different device I have to re log in which can happen several times a day.

Thanks FFS. I appreciate the effort the mods, cons and community put it. See you next season.

And I appreciate the effort you put into this post. I can't say I disagree with much of it at all 🙂

I'll take those opportunities (nicely worded) and give them a think through. I agree with most of them on first look though.
I would say that linking teams to profiles is good, but not necessary. Some want their teams hidden and that's their choice, but it is encouraged to share them.
More tiles - yes, I agree there's space there for more. I did a test to get the years on site badges added and now that I know that's possible I'll look at others. There are pros but also cons to a few of them, but I agree there's space for that.
All the rest of you said I think I totally agree with.

I'll look into the login issue asap.

And really glad to hear all those things you like. See you next season!

Not sure if you remember but years ago the comments section used to work so that the user grav was a link to their profile/posting history and the username was linked to whatever URL they had specified in the website field of their profile.

If the user hadn't specified a URL then their name was grey rather than green (I think) and it was unclickable.

I was much more inclined to try to check people's team links in those days because you could see immediately who had a link and it was a single click to access it.

Obviously everyone still had the choice to link or not.

I'll look into why that isn't a feature anymore

      Great post mate!

Pretty much agree with all of that.
Would like to see atleast a few of those ready for next season specially all those points related to the stats tables.

      Great post.
The one area I'd like to see improved is the season ticker, actually it's a couple of things that used to be a feature but no longer are.
The previous results history on each fuxture tab was a very quick and useful function.
Also, if you were to set the gameweeks to say 8 and then do set by difficulty as you do now BUT when you moved or removed a gameweek it wouls stay relevant to the original setting ( make sense?)
I'm sure there's something with dragging relevant gweeks and teams to assess but I'd need to go back in and try and remember the details - on hols and on tablet so not as easy as it sounds for me at least.....
Both the first two have been mentioned before but what the hey.

Total captain points for the season was 583 and I only had 8 captain blanks which I'm surprised about.

How do you link your team?

Which is the best (free) tool for checking various stats for the season? Thinking captaincy etc.

Interesting how poor the 'out there' captaincy choices did in the FFS poll.

Richarlison, Auba, Son, Pogba all fared poorly. Only Mane delivered outside of the big guns of Kane, Sterling, Aguero, Salah and Hazard.

From what I've heard, possibly in the next week, but that's not a certainty.

      Lots going on I think!

Could be talking about mine or Yusuf's history there 😆

Either way, the answer is only for paid members 😉
