The impact Ralph Hasenhuttl has had on Southampton’s FPL assets

Southampton are one of the most overlooked teams in Fantasy Premier League as Gameweek 1 draws ever nearer.

Only one of the Saints’ FPL assets is owned by more than 2.5% of managers: Shane Long (£5.0m), who, barring injuries, is expected to be among the substitutes when Southampton run out at Turf Moor this Saturday.

While the south coast club’s fixtures are a horror show between Gameweeks 7 and 13 (all of the sides they face in this period finished in the top nine last season), there are some more appealing encounters with Burnley, Brighton, Sheffield United and Bournemouth in the first half-dozen Gameweeks.

Pre-season results are not always a reliable barometer but the Saints are unbeaten in five matches this summer, winning four of them.

New signing Che Adams (£6.0m) has arguably been the stand-out performer, with three goals and two assists.

Is there anything to encourage Fantasy investment in the first six Gameweeks, then?

In this latest Numbers Game article, we take a slightly different approach to the series template and instead focus on the impact Ralph Hasenhuttl has made on Southampton following his appointment in December 2018.

When picking bench fodder do you want high ownership or low ownership to avoid price drops?

First 2 bench options I want to play, 3rd i don't want to drop in price so go for lowly owned players in that slot.

Wickham could be an option here: still some chance he’ll go out in loan if Palace buy a forward. That would lock his price

    GTG?

    Ryan
    TAA VVD Digne Stones
Salah (c) Sterling (v) Fraser Perez
    Wilson Deeney

    Bench: Button, Dendoncker, Guilbert, Wickham

Stones is the main one I'm unsure on, so hard to pick a city defender who is nailed... Deeney I've ended up with because he's nailed, on pens with decent fixtures and can be moved to whichever form option emerges 🙂

I've gone for Guilbert as it looks like he has good attacking threat so don't really want double up with Heaton. Not keen on Pope until their fixtures ease up. Think Ryan has the best opening 6 gameweeks out of them all and by then I will either have wildcarded or know when I'm likely to so can reassess goalkeeper.

Deeney is a bit under the radar, he's not an exciting pick but I'm hoping for a couple of returns before I ship him for something new and shiny 🙂

Personally if you want a Villa defender, I would go for Guilbert. Looks deadly going forward, however Mings could be a reliable BAPS magnet.

I'm also not too keen on Trezeguet for now, feel like there are better £5.5m options like McGinn.

Thanks for reply mate. I was looking who to pick from AV defence and Mings looked most reliable to start. I am also not sure about Trezegeut but I have good feeling about this guy. Very interesting player. McGinn is also option but I want to take a punt on Trezegeut with this opening fixtures.

The blind hope people invest in Bilva has always perplexed me. Never in his entire career has he suggested that he could match Sterling and he doesn't even play in the same position. It's actually impossible. Sane could do it in the short term, but not Bilva, yet people still persist with him because he plays for Man City. So odd.

As for the draft: PVA and mings are questionable picks. Better options at PVA's price. Trezeguet would be best downgraded to a 4.5 so you can spend some more money either in midfield or defense.

It feels nice having a city attacker in thr team than not having.

Without Liverpool attack ( Salah ie) , dont feel like something is missing.

Sterling is in form of his life. No doubt he is the better player ATM.

Fitting in all three ( Salah, Kane, sterling) will force me shift from potentially back 4/5 to back 3.

After about 180 drafts, I've been settled on this for a whole week! I'd really love to squeeze Wilson in instead of King but can't figure out a way to do it I'm happy with. TAA to Gomez being the closest, but that's a lot of potential assists to give-up plus Gomez isn't exactly nailed. I'm not prepared to switch the midfield as I see those 3 being the top 3 scoring mids in the game this year and Perez is great value in an attacking Leicester team where he will sometimes play OOP. Should I just stick with it as it is or is the strike force not up to it?

    Pope
    TAA / VDD / Digne / Zinc
    Salah / Sterling / KDB / Perez

Very similar to my team; have just talked myself into KDB to Bilva to allow King to Wilson. Concern is that, whilst KDB is a phenomenal player, he seems to be playing deeper and therefore might play well but not get the fantasy returns... e.g. assisting the person who provides the assist

Not sure if that is a bit of a myth or at least not accurate now. I was at the charity shield and watching out for that specifically. KDB was pretty much always the furthest forward City mid, ahead of Dilva and obviously Rodri. He was always around the box and got in some great positions. It might a bit different against more defensive teams but the signs were good. If he stays fit I think he could get 10 or so goals and 15-20 assists this year.

Interesting - I wasn't able to watch the game but the article after the game suggested he was playing deeper. Think this is the one open question in my team - Bilva and Wilson or KDB and King. Wilson pre-season form is good (as is KDB's). Advantage of KDB is that it's an easy swap to Son if he is firing; downside is that there isn't much money up front

Yes I think that article was misleading. I would be interested to see the average position map.

Aye, Son is my backup plan. Think I'm just going to stick with King and hope Wilson doesn't eclipse him too much, I expect him to though really but compromises have to made somewhere I guess!

I think i'll probably do the same (for now). KDB has been phenomenal in fantasy before...

Why Pope over Heaton / Ryan?

Villa are a bit of an unknown quantity to me. They've got lots of new players and I think I read their defence stats weren't great last year anyway. He could be good and I'll be keeping an eye on him. Don't fancy Brighton defensively at all really.

in favour of Pope I think Burnley will do better all round this year with no European distractions, they didn't have the squad size to cope with the amount of games last year. It is pretty feasible that they return to the form of the year before that which would make Pope excellent value, plus he's a good shot stopper so chance for save points.

                  Thanks - clear thinking.
Agree on uncertainty re Villa - in their favour other than WK1 I like their fixtures until GW10. Against them - Villa conceded the most out of the promoted sides; but they have strengthened their defence...

Think I'm ready to go with my Sterling Salah Kane team, thoughts would be appreciated. I have a couple of punts but I think they have a good enough chance of playing to go with it :-

    Ryan (Button)
    Robbo VVD Zinchenko KWP (Lundstram)
    Sterling Perez Salah Barkley (Dendonker)
    Kane King (Greenwood)

Pretty good, as good as it gets with those 3 in I reckon. I think if you're going this route the key is to make sure there is no fodder starting i.e. people starting Dendonk every week when going for big 3, daft IMO.

Question marks on KWP and Barkley, but they are pretty sure to start first couple of GWs and after that if they're not doing well, the other options at those price points should be clear.

    A. Zinchenko + KDB + Wilson + Hayden
    B. Laporte + sigurdsson + Wilson + Hayden
    C. Zinchenko + Sigurdsson + jota + Fraser

Sorry if confusing. The ones with Hayden mean dendoncker will start 🙂

I love 4-5-1 teams with Wilson up top
I think Mount is too punty.. has so much competition there.
I would downgrade Pickford to Pope/Heaton and upgrade Mount to another 7.5 mid (Moura/Pulisic/Fraser)
