Sterling establishes himself as best Man City option with hat-trick

West Ham United 0-5 Manchester City

Goals: Raheem Sterling (£12.5m) x 3, Sergio Aguero (£12.5m), Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m)

Assists: Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) x 3, Kyle Walker (£6.5m), Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m)

Bonus Points: Sterling x 3, Mahrez x 2, de Bruyne x 1

Manchester City midfielder Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) went a long way to proving he is worth the big bucks as a Fantasy asset by scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over West Ham.

Those who opted against owning the England international, perhaps opting for the cheaper Kevin de Bruyne (£9.5m), Bernardo Silva (£8.0m) or forward asset Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) were left in the wake of his 20-point haul at the London Stadium.

Those alternative options, for various reasons, simply could not compete with Sterling.

“Since China and the Community Shield, Sterling has scored one goal minimum every game. On the first day, he played striker and for me, striker will be an incredible position for him. He can play in three positions up front.” – Pep Guardiola

19% of Fantasy managers were left disappointed when it was confirmed that Aguero had been left on the bench. Given the Argentinian’s lack of any involvement in Manchester City’s pre-season campaign, this should not have come as too much of a surprise.

However, to his credit, Aguero did come on for the last 21 minutes and got on the score-sheet, albeit in perplexing circumstances. Despite Sterling being on two goals at the time, the centre-forward demanded he take City’s 86th-minute penalty. He actually saw his initial effort saved by Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m), but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ordered it be retaken for encroachment by Declan Rice (£5.0m). Aguero made no mistakes with the second attempt.

Aguero did not start at West Ham but did come on and score a penalty

Either way, the Manchester City striker conundrum will have to be assessed by Fantasy managers in the coming Gameweeks, as, on the basis of the opening game against West Ham, Gabriel Jesus (£9.5m) may have the edge over Aguero in terms of likelihood of starts.

It was a clinical performance from the Brazilian, who was sharp throughout and was unlucky to not have a brace on his first league start of the season. His clever finish from a Kyle Walker (£6.5m) cross capped a free-flowing City move to open the scoring. The right-back was awarded the assist despite a touch from Issa Diop (£4.5m) as this deflection did not change the intended destination of the pass.

Jesus thought he’d added a second goal after slotting home a Sterling square-ball but VAR ruled the goal out for an offside against the Englishman after consultation with referee Mike Dean.

Kevin de Bruyne played well despite not reaching Sterling’s FPL heights

One of the most eye-catching performances at the London Stadium came from de Bruyne, whose assist for Sterling came off the back of an incisive, dazzling run.

If the Belgian can remain fit for the duration of the 2019/20 campaign, he is arguably undroppable. And amidst a City team of considerable instability with regards to consistent starters, it could perhaps be de Bruyne who offers the strongest value at a price of £9.5m.

While his seven-point haul paled in significance to Sterling’s 20, that reliability of starts should go a long way this season.

Meanwhile, Guardiola’s decision to bench the 27% owned Bernardo Silva will give Fantasy managers another headache ahead of City’s Gameweek clash with Tottenham.

While the Portuguese international is supposedly one of the manager’s favourite players, it might be hard for him to drop those who played at West Ham, with attacking options such as Raheem Sterling (three goals), Jesus (one goal) and even Riyad Mahrez (three assists) excelling for the Citizens.

There will be a number of difficult decisions for managers who have backed these benched Gameweek 1 players such as Aguero or Bernardo Silva, but City’s outstanding performance against the Hammers is indicative of a team who will not only be rampant throughout the 2019/20 season but a team that managers simply must invest in the attack of.

This was both a clinical performance and a statement of intent from City and Guardiola, with a number of Fantasy assets both emerging into potential relevance alongside consolidating their already imperious credentials for the 2019/20 campaign.

There was a welcome clean sheet for Manchester City assets, in particular Zinchenko, who started at left-back

City’s defensive quartet of Walker, John Stones (£5.5m) Aymeric Laporte (£6.5m) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.5m) were firm at the back to resist a number of attacks from West Ham.

That will be of great encouragement to those invested in the City defence as they continued to demonstrate an improved ability to withstand pressure. West Ham started the game brightly, only to tail off in the face of superior attacking play and sheer determination from City, but it was important to see Guardiola’s men look well organised and disciplined even when asked to defend.

Felipe Anderson came off with a thigh injury in the second half

There really wasn’t much to be positive about for West Ham in this game, as was expected. Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini is likely to be frustrated at such a despondent final scoreline after his side had started brightly, but defensive lapses against one of the league’s most clinical attacking sides is not a recipe for success. The East London side will look to bounce back from their 5-0 thrashing and get their season started in earnest when they travel to Brighton, who beat Watford 3-0 on Saturday, in Gameweek 2.

Club-record signing Sebastian Haller (£7.5m) had rare glimpses of promise as a target man in the Hammers attack but offered little to convince Fantasy managers to sign him up for some upcoming appealing fixtures.

Perhaps the biggest concern for the Hammers was the fact that Felipe Anderson (£7.0m) went off injured, with what look like a thigh problem in the 66th minute. Interestingly, Pellegrini did not provide any updates on the player in his post-match press conference.

However, he did confir that Jack Wilshere’s (£5.0m) removal from play was not injury-related and was focused on ensuring his fitness due to coming back from a long-term absence.

“Jack was OK, I made that change because he is coming back from a long injury. No problem.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Why are people thinking about wildcarding already? Unless you have Trossard, Bilva and Alisson then you probably have a solid team. One week of luck shouldn't make knees tremble.

Its really hard to separate oneself from recency bias even if you know its a thing... I hate my team right now and want to rip it apart to get in Sterling, remove Fraser etc... But Im not going to do it.

People like to play it 'safe' and play the Scout Template. It's never a good idea to have no differential. A lot of the people who follow this scout template will be looking to make some major changes after this gameweek. This, coupled with the fact it's the first gameweek is making a lot of people panic.

Thankfully I accounted for this by choosing players outside of the obvious picks. I think it's always important to do your own research and come to your own conclusions instead of using the safety blanket that is this community. If you choose the same players as everyone else you'll finish in a very average rank and end up in a situation like this where you have to burn a wildcard.

I think that sums up why people are considering wildcarding. And while it seems a good solution to mix things up, I don't think players who find themselves in that position will be able to use the wildcard efficiently. It's best not to burn a lifeline so early nonetheless, it just spells a disaster season.

There are large chunks of the season when sticking to the template is extremely important. I'd even say it's one of the fundamentals of the game.

I've pretty much followed the exact opposite my entire FPL career with very successful results (usually trumping the FFScoutCast members). I agree that sticking to the 'usual' players is good to not end up falling behind, and using the scout picks is a good way of deciding on that as Scout does represent most of the top players/active players.

It's important to have some elements on this in your team, but playing it completely safe will never end well.

I agree. 2 or 3 changes after two gws is better and means you don't have to panic over price changes etc.

Worked for me last few seasons.

I have no transfers I feel like making so far. Quite happy with my 82 and 2 to go.

Will roll a transfer unless for some reason Barkley or Perez don't start/get injured.

        Start transferring when there's information.

Fair enough if you're transferring out Allison, but for all the no-shows (Trossard, Bilva...) it's too early

Arrogant, stroppy *** who is about 3 years past his prime and offers absolutely nothing in 90% of games.

I don't think we can conclude that Sterling is the best option after 1 game. He played very well but it was an easy fixture. You need a consistent player who will perform in both the good and bad fixtures. I think De Bruyne played a great game and a lot of positives can be taken from it with regard to his performance. Mahrez also had a great game but I wouldn't consider him an option.

I have Sterling, I want Kdb too now.

Can afford it though, was playing around, only way I can see is if Allison is injured long term to do Ederson/TAA/Moura to Adrian/Laporte/Kdb over the next 2-3 weeks.

Because the title of this post is claiming that he's the best man city option. That's a little presumptuous after a single game week. This is a classic mistake a lot of FPL players make, which is choosing players based on a single game week. You are picking a player who is expensive, costing £12m, because he performed in an easy match. That's what Sterling is - A big match player. I'd be interested to see if he can perform consistently like that. I think KDB will probably have more points by the end of the season.

Learn from history. Sterling ppm last year is 6.9 and got around 234 in 34 games.

KDB average around 5.2 - 5.7 (his best) ppm since make debut for City. He once get 199 and his best total points is 209.

I will take Sterling because he easily can be a captain option.

KDB looks value but not a good captaincy option.

That's the point, you're confusing a better player with a better FPL player. I think KDB will be looking to compete with Sterling this season in terms of points, and he's far cheaper. If you're choosing Sterling over Salah then you're likely burning yourself, and if you're choosing both then you're crazy.

I also don't think you can say KDB is not a captaincy option. OFC Sterling poses a greater threat but you can only choose 1 captain each week and I think combinations like Salah and Kane will provide enough captaincy coverage to void any reason to fork up the cash for Sterling.

Ffs of course said in term of FPL players. And Sterling is the best in that perspective.

I think u just cant accept it. Its on your name. 😀

If u want to say the best pleyer in real life, the most important player for the team, it can be Kante for Chelsea, or Allison for Liv, but they cant have many points more than their colleages in term of FPL

I dunno mate. Sterling has basically confirmed that he's worth it. Most players already knew he'd be worth it, but this is the cherry on top.

I scored 86 points so far this gameweek with players left to come, and I don't have Sterling. Omitting him from my line-up will not cost me as much as if I were to omit players like Salah. These are the standard players everyone tends to have, they don't win you seasons. I know Sterling will perform well, but at that price tag I could do much more than the few points he will get in the easy games.

Yes but that's the point.... If you don't burn your money paying for Sterling those 3 players remaining would be much better.

There are cheaper ways to achieve success in the area of Sterling, and that money could be put to MUCH better use.

          On another note

Anyone else feel that VAR after goals kills ‘the moment’ in football. Given goals are comparatively few and far between in football it’s the experience of these moments that makes football IMO.

It’s hard to get that jump out your seat when the ball rips into the net feel when you know it’s going to be reviewed.

Also what’s the point in having linesman when offsides I’m goals get reviewed anyway.

They need to better communicate what precisely is being looked at and why to the fans

I do and Southampton actually benefitted from it early in our game - ultimately irrelevant though 😉

Jesus second goal that was disallowed as Stirlingshire shoulder was fractionally ahead is a nonsense- that’s onside all day long.

            Exactly my thoughts.
VAR won't kill football but it'll lessen those "go nuts" moments.
We won't see players running off like loons either, they'll have to wait for the decision, then the moment is gone.

Why is my "overall rank" 209,012 and my "gameweek 1 rank" 260,677. Should it not be the same? Thank you!

So after today's performance is Origi nailed? I was impressed with his performance in the Champions League and was considering him for this season but was told he wouldn't start. After today do we think he'll be getting a little more game time?

Where would you play him then? Who would you drop?

Origi or Mane could potentially drop to midfield but I honestly doubt it. I think it's more likely that they will rotate with some midfielders and Origi will progressively get more game time, and potentially be a good pick.

He’s the bargain of the century if he does. I get the feel he will be an impact sub with mane starting ahead still. Hope I’m wrong as it would feel up funds for other players big time

He's such a powerful player that to bench him would be a complete waste of resources. I think they'll have to work him into the team somehow, and he's the perfect FPL player.

Salah, Mane and Firmino are all nailed and there is no other position Origi can play in other than forward 3 so no he is not nailed, he will be a backup for those 3.

Injury aside, there is literally no chance Origi becomes a starter over Firmino, Salah or Mane.

My last tweak in my team before season start was to switch from Alisson to Pope/Heaton rotation.

This is my best start in recent years.

              Deeney to Maupay or Pukki?

So what happened to the new “rule” on penalty rebounds? City game with the retake...

The penalty taker can't score the rebound, I think that was the wording.

What rule? Rice encroached. Save would have stood if Rice didn’t then clear it

There will be no rebounds from penalties
Play will stop for a restart if a penalty is saved or hits the post, meaning there will be no chance to follow up and score from rebounds, meaning players will no longer need to line up on the edge of the area.

Oh. Has this actually happened? Rice got done for encroachment and they were definitely lined up on the edge of the area for the retake

                      Hmmmm.
                      I see your point.
Commentator said it was Rice encroaching but surely the issue was Fabby was off his line.

Both BT and MOTD commentary said VAR ruled that Rice had encroached. And I’m sure I saw the referee explaining this to Rice

I think he encroached AND Fab was off his line, either one would be a retake.

They specifically said it wouldn’t have been retaken if he didn’t encroach. Maybe they were wrong but I thought they were in contact with the VAR people. Strange
