Greenwood only a substitute as Rashford starts up front

Southampton take on Manchester United in the Gameweek 4 curtain-raiser. Kick-off at St. Mary’s is at 12:30pm BST.

An injury to Anthony Martial (£7.7m) against Palace had dominated the build-up to this match, with speculation rife as to whether Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer could hand a start to Mason Greenwood (£4.5m).

That hasn’t transpired, with budget FPL forward Greenwood only among the substitutes.

Solskjaer has made three changes to the Manchester United side that lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace in GW3, with Ashley Young (£5.4m), Andreas Pereira (£5.0m) and Juan Mata (£6.4m) starting in the lunch-time kick-off.

Young replaces the injured Luke Shaw (£5.5m) at left-back, whilst Solskjaer has shuffled his pack in the absence of Martial: Mata and Pereira earning starts against the Saints as Jesse Lingard (£6.5m) drops to the bench.

The Norwegian boss has turned to the tried and tested Mata to add attacking impetus to United’s frontline, with the Red Devils aiming to prevent their sluggish Premier League start turning into something of a nightmare after a winless run of two games.

This is a game of extreme importance in the Solsjkaer era at United and the decision to opt for experience in the form of Mata as opposed to a youthful prospect such as Greenwood is telling of how pivotal this fixture could be for United’s momentum in the initial stages of the 2019/20 campaign.

Meanwhile, Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl has made just two changes to his starting line-up for the game against United, with Cedric (£4.9m) and Sofiane Boufal (£5.5m) earning starts at the expense of Yan Valery (£5.0m) and Nathan Redmond (£6.4m).

The Saints will be looking to build on their impressive away victory over Brighton in Gameweek 3.

Southampton XI: Gunn, Cedric, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Danso, Højbjerg, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Boufal, Adams, Ings.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Young, McTominay, Pogba, Andreas, Mata, James, Rashford.

      De Gea
      AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw
      ????? McTominay
      James Pogba Martial
      Rashford

The '?????' is the issue. Matic is too slow to play the role. Fred can't tackle. If Utd find that midfielder they would improve a lot - it would relieve Pogba of some defensive duty and provide the CBs with more protection.

Yeah midfield is an issue. As it stands, I think this is the best atm.

I think Mata is past it tbh.

Pogba is an issue in the midfield role - he hates defending. I know he gets paid loads, but getting players to do things they hate is poor management IMO. He gives the ball away, he can't mark at corners and FKs, he gives away silly fouls in dangerous areas. That is why I prefer Pogba higher up the pitch.

VVD is world class - Maguire is not a bad layer but you'll need considerably more than that to have a radical upgrade on the team as a whole.

Since Moyes, they have spent hundreds of millions, hired one of the greatest managers of this generation, and at the end of five years, this is all that is left to show for it.

Why should anyone in that organization get another chance to build again?

tbh they do need a manager like Poch and give him 4/5 years no matter what happens. He will bring the best out of what they have and get them back to a good level, then hand it over to a winning manager to get them competing for the PL again.
Thats exactly what he has done with Spurs considering their lack of singings most of the time. They should break the bank to get Poch

Yes, but look below -- can they afford to do a down to the studs rebuild?

True, and the current management are not helping the brand. Few stars plus few results equals fewer shirt sales. Pogba is all they have left as a merchandise mover.

The belief "It can only be better from here" is giving them chance.

That's me. Went Rashford to Abraham this week, going De Gea back to Pope next and benching AWB.

Just came back home from work.

How did AWB fare? Worth keeping or Utd are sh*t?

If De Gea and the defenders put their minds to it, they can easily reach the 100 point mark this season. This was a solid 2 points each they got.

#free Pogba from defensive midfield. He looked somewhat alive when he got to go forward once Matic came on.
