FPL Question Time – Consult our panel ahead of Gameweek 7

As per usual, there are a tonne of questions ahead of the Fantasy Premier League Gameweek 7 deadline.

Manchester City assets continue to be under threat from rotation, Liverpool still can’t keep clean sheets and Norwich continue to blank away from home.

To answer some of these dilemmas, we have put together another panel of Fantasy managers to help you out…

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL General – Contributor to the Scout site who has three finishes inside the top 400 in the last five seasons and who has a huge following on Twitter. General – aka Mark – also appears regularly on the official FPL Show.

FPL Hints – One of the most-followed names in the FPL community, a seasoned veteran as well as a Scout writer and an Official FPL panellist. Finished 110th in the world in 2011/12.

FPL Heisenberg – Influencer within the FPL community with a top 10k finish in 2016/17, followed by top 1k in 2017/18.

Joe – Our very own Scoutcast and video host, long-time servant of the site, keeper of the Goals Imminent table and seven top 10k FPL finishes.

Nah, would just ditch Digne before he drop in value and stick with Raheem since he's now rested.

See whats up with Kun vs Rah next week when you have 2FTs again

Many, like me, played early to catch price rises/ avoid drops

I have a good enough bench to hold off even if there are a couple of no shows, hopefully: Cantwell, Lunds, Rico

What do we think of Maddison with the upcoming fixtures? Recall this time last year him producing similar stats and never really exploding or going on a consistent run of form.

    1. Dr. Agabuse
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 1 month ago

He looks explosive and the fixtures favour him but then theres Son, Mount and the premiums.

Its impossible to fit them all.

Wouldnt even know how to use a WC.

Just be sensible and generate a second FT if you have a solid team.

I had McGinn and had to start him. He almost scored a brace

    2. Brosstan

Brought him in on WC two weeks ago and happy so far. He can be frustrating to own as his team mates often let him down. However I think there's been a change this year to give him an even more central role as he's their best player. Rodgers seems to be trying to set up the team to let him thrive.

The curious case of Man Utd v Leicester assets.

Everyone is getting rid of James, martial and AWB and everyone is talking about bringing in Soyuncu, Maddison and Vardy because of their great fixtures.

Over the next 8 the two teams play 4 of the same teams, with Leicester also playing Everton, Crystal Palace, Southampton and burnley. Man Utd play Norwich, Aston villa, Sheffield Utd and Bournemouth in that same period. Feels similar dunnit, maybe slightly better for Leicester defensively and man utd offensively?

xG to date, Man Utd 10.04 vs leicester 6.18
xGC to date Man Utd 3.82 vs Leicester 5.69

Value of Leicester fpl starting ix: 63.5m
Value of Man Utd fpl starting ix (assuming Rashford out): 66m

I'm not suggesting Leicester assets aren't good options - maddison and soyuncu both seem great particularly, nor that man utd arent in a period of poor form, but I think writing man utd off for coming into a tough set of fixtures while hailing Leicesters as I've seen on here is plain incorrect. Likewise, any argument of value is overstated, there should be similar value to be had across both sides, its just finding the right players.

I know people will probably shout me down, and man utd seem to have an uncanny way of indulging in slumps, but given dip in form has coincided with pogba, martial and shaw being out who are returning, I think at least so credence should be given to the fact that this could improve their attacking returns?

Ultimately can see the sway in power going towards Leicester and they may finish above man utd, but I feel it could be the case of perceived performance vs expected and results clouding fantasy potential which doesn't care where you finish (ask Norwich)

Rashford down too + people plan more short term and more long term too. Next 4 for Leicester and next 12 looks much better 11 for them

cause you dont know, when youre able to make the transfer. you might be stuck with AWB or you might miss Vardys explosion etc

Next 4, both play Liverpool and newcastle so BUR sou vs ARS nor, I know which one I'd prefer for attacking returns

Longer term the 5 games after I listed, both play man city and Watford, so it's spurs, Everton and Newcastle for man utd vs Liverpool, Norwich and Aston villa for Leicester. It's not exactly light and day is it?

I still think Man United assets are great value. Btw interesting thing is that according to the understat expected points table they are actually 2nd behind Man City and ahead of Liverpool, when we talk about they overall performance. Sure, xG and xPoints is not the perfect measure but nevertheless food for thought imho. One thing that concerns me a little is that maybe this whole atmosphere around the team and lack of confidence maybe would affect them maybe (in a negative way)? Also I wonder wheather acutally more difficult fixtures wouldn't be better for their attacking assets paradoxically? They have very fast players good on counterattacking but in a crowded penalty area that is hard to breakdown that could pose a problem maybe (ie they played very well against Chelsea were there was a lot space to exploit)

I mean it's the comments on here that shut it down, united are rubbish, case closed, when the stats don't necessarily agree. Likewise form as a predictive factor is very sketchy. I agree with the confidence thing - they score their 2 missed pens and they're 3rd, what crisis, such is the margins...they also beat Leicester literally 10 days ago! There I was looking to stimulate some genuine discussion! A lot depends on arsenal result and performance I think, win there are you're back in European places ahead of arsenal and Chelsea.

I agree with you. Just be happy that you can benefit from United players over most others on this site. James and now Pogba are good options especially with the latter having been out for a while so his ownership is particularly low.

        2. Sgt Frank Drebin
          • 8 Years

Yeah sure, I agree, just wanted to point out that they could be a bit unlucky and the margins are very small as you said and I guess if they were 3rd people would be bringing AWB in not out even if he had same amount of points now! But with all the people saying they are crap don't you think it is a good oppourtunity to get ahead of the curve be getting AWB, Martial (I actually still have him but probably keeping...) or James? I think one of the most important thing in FPL is to be an early adopter and it's the best way to spot a good chance to get ahead of others is through stats so this is maybe such a good chance. But as I said I'm little bit afraid that this negativity around the club now (see the comments about United!) can really cause a drop in form!

Yes, I was planning to bring in martial this week but likewise slightly spooked, and popular option would be maddison (who would also enable second sub upgrade) so just weighing things up. I also think Shaw is a good option and may move aurier on to him after spurs next 3 fixtures for a safer starter

            1. Sgt Frank Drebin
              • 8 Years

I think I am going to keep Martial so far and shift to Maddison if he doesn't play well. I don't know what to do with James though who I also have now. Was thinking about a double swap of Aguero and James to Son and Abraham but still not sure at all about it...

Whether that aurier disallowed goal was the correct decision or not I think that decision cost spurs the game. If that goal stood I bet spurs would have won like 3-1 in the end.
If people think spurs have serious problems they will be surprised this week when Southampton get steam rolled.

Thinking Digne and Barnes to Vardy and Soyuncu?

I so much don't know what to do with Aguero... I think it would be much morea reasonable to get rid of him and stick to Sterling as I can captain only one and still Sterling will probably get more points in the course of the season and it enables more balanced team, but on the other hand City attack is something out of this planet, expecially with KDB in midfield. Isn't having triple City attack like the most simple and inituitive way to get the most points possible? Ditching Aguero would mean bringing Son, but as someone wrote today I don't trust Spurs but I trust City playing well all day. Also Aguero top of all the possible stats charts. Maybe I just have a good team and I am just overcomplicating...

Sterling over Aguero 100%. Aguero with 9 points in an 8-0 mauling of Watford? Raheem would have filled his boots had he started. Forward assets simply can’t compete with mids when factoring in goals and clean sheet bonus

Thanks interesting point, that would well have been Sterling not Silva with a hat trick had Sterling played on the left in this game!

On the other hand Aguero could have easily gotten 20+points had he had a better day

Raheem likely to play tonight after 2 blanks and a benching.

Aguero will start GW7. Nough said.

Bar the odd KDB hit (and Kompany!) Man City score six yard box goals by slicing teams open down the sides. Who do you find hanging around in that box the most? IMO Kun will always get the most chances in a game to score, it depends how clinical he is on the day. The mids have more assists in their lockers...

          gtg?

          Pope,
          VVD, Digne, Aurier
          KDB, Sterling, Son, H Wilson
          Tammy, Firmino, Pukki

          Cantwell, Pieters, Hanley

Do I play Cantwell over Wilson?

          Pope / Button
          TAA / Zinch / Dunk / Digne / Boly
          Sterling / KDB / Mane / Cantwell / Dendonck
          Barnes / Haller / Wickham

          1 free transfer + 2m in bank.

Wickham obviously just taking up a space, considering dropping Sterling to get Aguero in, is there a way to achieve this without dropping loads of points?

          Sterling + Wickham > Aguero + ?

Salah, Sterling KDB is the template.

Most teams will look the same with those 3 mids.

          So repetitive.

WC him out after first blank. Would have had James come on for him this week, not luckstram and would have missed salah’s 6, 9, 5. So quite a lot worse off. Salah > Sterling should happen next week or week after

Hate having template team I just can’t do it, no fun to be had. Sure I might have some picks to make up the backbone but typically my team is very different to most.
Sometimes it hurts me for being so different tho, if your going to go all maverick you have to get it right or it will go spectacularly wrong.

It’s actually really hard to get decent advice for a non template team as they try and morph your team into the template. I just go with my gut and my brain most of the time. I can see who is good and isn’t. I made post here yesterday about some moves I want to do, because it involves taking Auba out everyone says no but I can see it’s clearly the sensible move and will improve my squad dramatically even if it means losing Auba. So if I listened to that advice my team would stand still essentially.
There is good advice here for sure but sometimes not

Another example would be my wildcard team I did last week. Got in Kane, and the reason is he will be my captain for next 3 and the week just gone. No one here is going to tell me to get Kane and when people see him they will be like ditch Kane! But let’s check back in a few weeks and see how many points Kane got me for these four weeks..

At the end of the day your team. You should be making the decisions. Some give good advive but some tell you that having Salah that them having Salah is a mistake when he is the highest scoring mid after KDB which only majority will cap.

Then Aguero is in danger of Jesus? Some of the advise on here is scary.

          Probably going 352

2 free transfers but may take a minus 4, and looking to change formation and going triple Chelsea.

Ditching Barnes and Dendoncker for Mount and Greenwood thoughts? May also ditch Digne for Azpi for a minus 4

          What is preferable:

          (a) mount and soyuncu (free) for digne and ceballos
          (b) mount, soyuncu and Abraham in (-4) for digne, ceballos and pukki
