Which FPL defenders are the most attacking in 2019/20 so far?

We take a look at the Fantasy Premier League defenders who are exhibiting the biggest attacking threat in our latest Members article.

Clean sheets are still proving hard to come by in 2019/20, particularly if Fantasy managers have stuck with the best-performing defences of last season.

We’re actually only three shut-outs down from the same stage last year (44 v 41) but the meanest backlines of 2018/19 haven’t fully convinced in the first two months of this campaign.

Liverpool and Manchester City had already recorded five clean sheets apiece this time 12 months ago but have kept only five between them this season.

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur had seven shut-outs combined after Gameweek 8 of 2018/19; this time around, they have managed only one each.

Everton, who were keeping clean sheets for fun at the back-end of last season, are now without a shut-out to their name in six Gameweeks.

Clean sheets are just one route to points, of course, and we Fantasy managers love an FPL defender who can pick up the odd attacking return at the other end of the pitch.

With shut-outs difficult to come by, perhaps it makes more sense than ever to look at what our defenders are offering offensively.

With that in mind, we will study our Members’ Area data to pinpoint the defenders who have demonstrated goal and assist potential in Gameweeks 1 to 8.

Lessons learned from Gameweek 8

Which of these would you prefer to go with over the next few fixtures in particular?

    1. Webster/Lowton (or other 4.5m defender) + Vardy.
    2. Soyuncu + Wilson (+ 0.9m for upgrades).

    Hola,
Any thoughts on my current team? Need some pool at least but not sure who and where

Adrian (prob out now due to Alisson return)
    Tomori - Rico - Lundstram
    Son - Sterling - Mount - Maddison
    Auba - Aguero - Abraham

Subs: McGovern - Cantwell - Pieters - Kelly

      Wow!. My defence is same
      Adrian
      Tomori Rico Lundstram Pieters Kelly.

      Attack is very different though
      Salah Sterling Mane KDB Cantwell
      Pukki Abraham Wickam

My midfield was similar before I took out Salah and KDB.

You reckon Adrian has another game left? I think that'll be him for the season now. Thus relying on relegation zone McGovern (who admittedly saved a penalty last weekend so very happy bout that)

Not very confident that Adrian will be playing again. My second keeper is Button so Adrian to Gazza for a hot on cards. Your back up keeper is playable so no worries

    Best 4.4/5 mid fodder?

    A) Dendocker - have Boly and can see myself getting Jimenez in the future so would lock out any more Wolves
    B) Nakamba - can't see myself needing 3 Villa players but could lose his place
    C) Other

Id be looking at Jimí & McGinn > Vardy & Maddy there

      1. Eze Really?
        • 10 Years

I have a good feeling about Jimi who may not score at the level of Vardy but will grab points regularly. Vardy winds me up when I watch him. A bit like Auba who does nothing all game but pops up and scores a goal. McGinn I agree but maybe next week. Maddi always flatters to deceive but I should have a Leicester player. I was thinking McGinn to Maddi as you say.

Depends what the rest of your squad is. I am probably one of the few who doesn't really rate Maddison as an FPL asset but I like Wilson with his upcoming fixtures. If Son starts this week despite Spurs woes I think that he could score heavily .

      1. The Yorkshire Pirlo

        Currently have...

        Pope
        Soyuncu, Otamendi, Alonso
        Son, Sterling, KDB, Mount
        Auba, Pukki, Abraham

        McGovern, Cantwell, Rico, Lundstram

Means I have to downgrade somewhere to get Wilson in for Pukki.

        1. George Sillett
          • 9 Years

I'm not convinced Steve Bruce is capable of parking the bus effectively for 90 minutes. They'll concede two or three IMO, and that could be enough for Abraham. He has struggled at home this season tho, so it does come with a bit of risk.

He’s not scored that badly really considering. Just relies on a good relationship with an attacking RB. Looked cool when chambers came in Last game, making good runs, have Pepe a lot more space

Could come good - maybe soon, maybe later, maybe never

Some (vehemently!) disagreed with me when I advised to avoid & observe early on to serve any acclimatisation period... But he's been an FPL disaster for anyone who got in early

4.5 PPG not so bad since the GW5 obsession. I’d be happy with that

          • 14 Years

Not when a fraction of his price could have bought the same (or more) points

18 points... for 9.5... from wat, AVL, man, Bou... When 6 of those points were actually from a penalty donated by Auba?

Its putting lipstick on a pig calling that anything other than a fail

          (And that's before you come to the 1, 1, 2, 5 that preceded GW5!)

But as I said, he could definitely come good, maybe sooner, maybe later, maybe never 🙂

Whilst he hasn't hit top gear yet, he's still only scored one less point than Mane over the last three GW's, and has outscored Salah, Sterling, Mount, Son etc over the same period. A goal this weekend and I think you'd be content with recent returns.

To be fair - Salah, Son, and Sterling are being sold in their thousands due to their recent failures, and Mount is a fraction of his price so possibly not the best examples to use

The way I would still put it is that avoiding early on to swerve any acclimatising period was always sensible

Better to be a week late than 5,10, (or more!) weeks early with such a highly priced and unproven asset (scoring penalties & free kicks in France is wonderful, but still unproven in England)

I actually like the way he plays though, his low centre of gravity & pace with the ball at this feet reminds me a little bit of hazard... Has an absolute cannonball of a shot too & he could yet come good.

Especially if Auba keeps donating penalties to him 🙂

Pukki plays at home to Watford in GW12, when City play Liverpool, Auba away to Leicester and Tammy at home to Palace.

Is a potential Pukki(c) that week a reason to hold for the time being?

I think the hold /sell decision shouldn't really be influenced significant by a potential captaincy 4-5 weeks down the line

More important to look at your team for the next few GW's and decide based on that

Assuming this is the team I stick with, would you captain Mane Abraham or Wilson? Why?

    Pope
    TAA Soyuncu Dunk
    Mane KDB Mount Maddison
    Auba Abraham Wilson
    —McGovern Lundstram Rico Dendoncker

    Thanks! 🙂 0.9 ITB

      Wilson, Norwich can't defend

Wilson - same reasons as above

Wilson due to the Norwich factor

All good shouts though, procurator mane with his fixture

As a utd fan I can safely say I have never actually dreaded a game - until now - Sunday could be an era defining result if things go the wrong way

No ‘ifs or maybe’, it’s going to be a very one sided game with United risking getting beaten BADLY. Prediction 0-5

No matter which way you cut it - everything points to a whitewash

All utd can hope for is a complete freak event to help keep the result respectable, let alone the scoreline

There's actually a case to be made that a 5-0,6-0,7-0 defeat could be better for the club in the long run to illicit some sort of fundamental change

Because its rotten to the core at the minute

Yeah totally agree. There’s a poisonous atmosphere currently and they need a change, desperately!

This has probably been brought up before but would it be possible to add a notification feature to the site when some one replies to your post? I might be being a bit nit picky but its agg having to check emails for replies!

I do think that this is the GW to have the 2 Pool full backs . I don't think it will be long before teams are being ripped up to accommodate them.
