Man City v West Ham postponed due to adverse weather conditions

One of today’s two Premier League matches has been called off.

Manchester City announced this morning that their meeting with West Ham United wouldn’t go ahead “due to extreme and escalating weather conditions and in the interests of supporter and staff safety.”

A date for the postponed match has yet to be announced (it remains to be seen if the winter break could still accommodate this clash) but City are facing a real backlog of fixtures, with Pep Guardiola’s troops also blanking in Gameweek 28.

Progression to the FA Cup quarter-finals (or Chelsea’s) would also force their Gameweek 31 meeting with Frank Lampard’s side to be rearranged.

City’s Gameweek 34 clash against Newcastle United would be postponed if either team made it through to the FA Cup semi-finals, although the free midweek afterwards would accommodate one of their outstanding games.

As it stands, the other Premier League match scheduled for today – Sheffield United v Bournemouth – remains on.

The Blades’ fan services account tweeted this update earlier on:

How PATHETIC that Money bags Man City with their fancy stadium postpone a game while Sheffield United just get on with it and play even though the weathers the same for everyone. Glad my captains Salah and i didnt buy Aguero.
American Football is played under 2 feet of snow with 80k turning up every week. Softies!!!!

Its not necessarily the pitch/stadium. Its the surrounding areas and the travel arrangements.

The travel of bournmouth to Sheff U is longer than the travel of West Ham to Man City.

So if we are talking about the safety of the fans then surely the Sheff U game would have been called off if the city game has.....

The climate East of the Pennine hills is completely different to the West

On any given day you can have 2 feet of snow on one side and none on the other...same goes for rain and temperature.

WOW. what a reaction. i went to an Amercian football match in Buffalo USA and it was -10 and blowing a gale and it still went ahead. this country grinds to a halt when it gets a bit windy. they should just play behind closed doors and tell the fans to watch it on TV. This is a blessing for WEST HAM as they would have been hammered anyway.

A game in another continent going ahead doesn't mean that every British game with dangerous weather should go ahead. I once went to a City game where the weather was in the minus figures, and it was dark with ice on the roads, but that game went ahead as normal. It's obviously done on a case-by-case basis. The officials have more knowledge of the factors than both of us combined.

You know nothing about American football. Of course the away fans travel!! They get drowned out by the home fans.
there`s only 16 games in a season so of the course the stadiums are packed.
I`d rather see less games played but better quality.

Not being funny, but as I understand it the point of the winter break (at least from the way the top managers keep pushing it) is to give players a physical rest, not necessarily an extra chance to fanny about in Dubai for a week. There's no reason they can't still have the former.

Depends on what the clubs want (do they want their full winter break?), what the police and club staff say (can they rearrange everything in time?), Sky Sports (who are televising) and the fans groups (have they got enough notice?)

Weather in the city centre has now calmed down but I don't blame them for cancelling the game. As someone who lives in the city centre, I tried to do a quick 5 minute walk to a brunch spot 2 hours ago. It took over 15 minutes, I could barely fight against the wind gusts and the rain felt like ice pellets smacking into your skin (umbrella broken in two minutes).

Nowhere near safe enough for the fans or players in those conditions and it could return. Completely correct call and I have Aguero (c).

It would take an extraordinary event to make the front page, you expecting him to do a Eric Cantona or be the first player with the Coronavirus ?

Wonder if it is worth the frustration with a City fixture pile up EPL/CL and cups along with Pep wrecking your brain with benching/cameos and no shows.

You just know Vardy is gonna score a hattrick this GW now, just to rub it in the faces of everyone who moved him on for Aguero!

Stephens and Lascelles off the bench

I need a poor game from Auba and his fellow shooters today... And no own goals 😀

      Looks a bit suspicious IMO
      Not long to wait anyway
But would be classic FPL if Lundy did start, scored, got 3bps alongside Vardy banging in a hattrick

a CL last 16 GW would be my guess, but could be moved to GW34 or GW37, with another City game played then if they are still in the FA Cup.

For your season (transfers not involving suspension or injuries)

    Best transfer out?
    ( Dunk)

    Worst transfer in?
    ( Maupay)
