How to play Football Index and a guide to the match day and media dividends

Sponsored by Football Index

Fantasy Football Scout are joining forces with Football Index in the upcoming season.

If you’re new to Football Index, think of it as a revolutionary betting platform that works a bit like a virtual stock market.

Similar to player prices in Fantasy Premier League, the aim is to bet on the future value of the players when the price is low and then sell on when the value is high.

Now imagine you could do that sort of thing and have the opportunity to profit from FPL skills.

Well you can. It’s what happens at Football Index (FI) and Fantasy Football Scout will be dipping its toe into FI’s waters for the season.

Or, more accurately, I will. With a very modest £20 budget to work with, I’ll attempt to play the market, turn a profit and, most importantly of all, have some fun while I’m doing it.

Along the way, Scout will provide some tips on who to buy and sell while I no doubt ignore all that expertise and go for an ill-advised punt that lasts about as long as Martin Kelly’s England career.

So how do you play the game?

Put simply, you place your bet and buy shares in individual players and make/lose money based on the changing value of those shares.

Values change due to a number of factors, but like ‘real’ stock exchange shares, the key reason is popularity. The more people buy into a player, the greater his price, and vice versa. The trick, as ever, is to buy before values go up, and sell before they go down.

There are, however, many other ways to win on FI – dividends.

Many of these dividends give FI more of a Fantasy Football feel because they are based on the players’ on-pitch performance.

FI has just overhauled its dividend pay-outs and it’s not controversial to say that they are extremely generous, with a number of 100% increases in certain areas.

Dividends are awarded to owners of players who excel for their side, with bigger pay-outs for stand-out performances on major match days (10+ fixtures across Europe’s top five leagues/the Champions/Europa League and the European Championships). There are also awards for players who make it into FI’s team of the month.

All those dividends rely on the sort of match day data that drives any decent fantasy game these days, as well as the bonus point system in FPL. So a goal will earn a player 45 points as part of their dividend ranking, a red card -30 and so on. Defenders earn clean sheet points, while keepers also enjoy a raft of exclusive ways to make their mark.

One other dividend is different. And daily.

The media dividend is paid out to the player with the most mentions across a range of major media sources every single day.

Seen through the prism of the last few days, it demonstrates how Football Index works on a fundamental level.

Take the example of Lionel Messi. Talk of the pint-sized legend leaving Barca once and for all and this news has dominated the media recently, resulting in a massive jump in his price.

These things change, obviously, but the last time I checked it would cost you seven quid for a single Messi share – two pounds more than before he hit the fax machine, which is a huge rise in relation to his overall value.

And for those of you who can only think in these terms when talking about Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo is currently at just over three pounds.

Compare that to Harry Maguire. Despite being all over the media, FI‘s dividend doesn’t take bad publicity into account. It’s not a measure of infamy.

But the fallout of his recent press coverage – the Paddington Hard Stare from Southgate, being dropped from the England squad etc – has clearly spooked some owners into selling their shares in him.

The bottom line – not all news is good news with FI‘s media dividend, but it’s a daily way for a chance to win.

There’s even a set of in-play dividends to win from, with FI paying out on individual actions (goals, assists, clean sheets etc) by players for the first 30 days that you own them.

Like all the best games, the rules are fairly straightforward, but the nuances start to pile up as you become more familiar with how things can play out.

I, no doubt, will pick up on some of these nuances, and get burned by others, as I wend my merry way through a season of Football Index trading.

I hope you’ll join me for the ride.

And in the meantime, all the rules and regs can be found on FI’s excellent Academy Page here.

Reverting to some of the players from an earlier draft...

    McCarthy (Steer)
TAA - Egan - KWP - Justin (Pieters)
Auba - Son- ASM (Bruno, Anguissa)
    Ings - Werner - Mitro

Think it's worth saving money on Ings > Adams personally. 2.5M can go a long way in that team.

        My point exactly.

Makes me sick all of this gambling promotion.

To start pushing a football stock market towards this audience in my eyes is irresponsible.

I’m an ex gambling addict and I found myself addicted from an early age. I’m in full control now but It was when I was younger, when I had less understanding of the meaning of money that I found myself gambling.

Could be younger kids on this website and I really don’t think it’s healthy pushing them towards gambling their money on a football stock market.

                Yes.

My point isn’t because I care about myself, I’m in control.

But I became addicted when I was younger and I know how weak minded people of that age are. It is the time when they are likely to get addicted as they are irresponsible.

                I’m talking from experience.

                This isn’t right.

You should have to be 18 to be on this site if this is how they want to push it.

            It’s just plain wrong.

Make it an over 18 site at least as this isn’t a healthy place for minors to come to that’s for sure.

Hate to break it to you, but Fantasy Football is gambling. It's a very natural partnership.

It is based on the core tenets of gambling. You are betting on players to do well. There is inherent risk/reward while you manage statistics and probability of players performing well.

It may be a free game, but it's comparable to playing poker with play money.

            But it is free.

I’m talking about them potentially poisoning the minds of minors or 18-20 year olds etc who are weak minded and don’t have an understanding of money and could easily find themselves racking up debts.

It isn’t healthy, no matter how you dress it up.

I don’t mind it, but it should be an over 18 site if they want to permanently push over 18 products. Minors will be on here.

Poisoning the minds... Sounds very dramatic.

It's a promotion that requires 18+ to even sign up. Younger generations if anything are better at ignoring spam than any older generation because they've grown up with it around them.

If they're really passionate about FPL. They will do what 90% of people on this site do and ignore all these posts and just do RMTs...

You are assuming, which is pointless.

Do some research, younger people or minors exposed to gambling at a young age are more likely to go onto having gambling issues.

Should be an over 18 site, open your eyes and don’t be narrow minded.

You are assuming too though and taking your own past trauma to form a basis against a whole industry. It is up to education to help youngsters understand gambling and the risks involved.

It is not an evil in and of itself.

As I said, do some research as there are studies and facts that prove this.

I’m sure you are a biased person anyway as I’m sure I remember you saying you do this as your job (ie - gambling of some sort)?

Promoting gambling to children and telling them how good this new football trading (gambling) platform is, is just plain wrong and irresponsible and could set younger generations off on the wrong road from a young age.

You have no idea the havoc

I personally think instead of calling it wrong and irresponsible the better way would be to just leave a comment warning about the dangers of it - because there are plenty of people that can and do play these games for fun without it becoming a problem.

Football Index is fun, for what it is. You should never lose sight of what it is though, which is simply another gambling site. In other words, it potentially carries all the negatives that other forms of gambling do. Therefor I would never tell or advise someone to join, as there can be very real negative consequences.

*If* you do decide to join though and take it for what it is, here are some basic day 1 tips and pointers to help you avoid losing money:

    1) Read the rules, read the game mechanics. It seems stupid to throw away money playing a game you don't understand, yet so many beginners do just that. Don't be a casual/sheep. There are FI forums and communities so be engaged.

    2) Play around with a small bit of money first. The market often doesn't react to things the way you would intuitively think it would. Keep your losses to a minimum while you figure that out.

    3) Remember, there is no profit/loss until you sell. Panicking and selling a player who will likely rise back up is a mistake, as it believing you've made a profit just because your player has gained value on paper.

    4) The layout of the site will display your "profit" in terms of your player's current purchase price. This is misleading. Their true value is what you can sell them for, which is often much lower. Don't be tricked into thinking you're doing better than you actually are.

    5) Do not trust random people on the internet when they tell you X player is a great buy. If they own that player then it's in their interest for others to jump on board. Google "pump and dump" and always remember that particular scam is easily implemented on FI. Do your own research on a player and make your own decision, always.

    6) There are different strategies and approaches to making profit in FI. Figure them out and decide which suit you.

    7) If it stops being fun, stop playing.

Gents, can I get your honest feedback please? I'm thinking about FPL membership (FFS particularly, for the 1st time, mainly for the stats areas) I'd like your feedback or observations (as I think others might). It's more about the value rather than the price.

Has it enhanced your FPL performance?
    A. No
    B. Moderately
    C. Yes
    D. Better than expected
    E. Greatly

Does it help to decrease the time you spend on FPL or actually increases the time?
    1. Increases
    2. Decreases
    3. No change

Would you be inclined to spend less time in the comments area as a result of membership or you continue to enjoy engaging?
    Y. Yes
    N. No

Any comments welcome. I apologise if my questions seem naive.

For £17.50 it's probably worth it, but i've always done well without it personally.I had it 2 seasons ago, and it's impressive i must admit. You can do just fine without it

First year with an actual membership, so will decide at the end of the season. All I know is that by simply being a part of the community (even just for free last season) that improved my game results. Got my best rank ever since I decided to stop playing casually. Already seeing the benefits of a membership as well.

I pay for membership every year because I value the content enough to pay for it. I don't know about my FPL performance, but it definitely saves time if you're the kind of player that has any interest in data/stats/planning.

I rarely spend any time in the comments section and only saw your comment flash by out of pure chance.

Appreciate your honesty and agree with your point re paying for content, but we do this partially anyway through purely being here in this online environment, one of who's revenue generator's is volume of foot-fall.

I appreciate you responding to my post. I'm interested in data, but more the way it's analysed, presented and focused toward a performance gain.
Can I simply ask why you haven't benefited from using the tools & data?

Depends what you use it for

      Simple comparison tools are great

      Ticker is useful

Members articles are informative and interesting

      And that’s all surface level

        • 8 Years

I'd be looking to use stats to save time. I agree Ticker is a useful tool, but can become a somewhat misleading tool, hence the reason I'm looking for more in-depth player analysis v forthcoming fixture.
        *Thanks for your feedback 🙂

Having access to the stats has certainly helped.

Since becoming a member I probably spend more time on FPL and less time commenting. Being a member didn't cause that to happen though, it correlated with it.

The more you're engaged by FPL the more time you'll spend on it, the more interested you'll be in becoming a member and the less you'll spend time in the comments asking basic questions or looking for people to RYT.

Appreciate the feedback. RMT is not my game, but like information and stats. I may look for a particular 50/50 now & again though.

Spending time on FPL is becoming increasingly difficult. It's competitive - might need some tools 😉

How will they line up do we think? 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 something like this?

      Pickford
      Coleman, Mina/Holgate, Keane, Digne
      Allan
      Siggy/Gomes, Doucoure
      James, DCL, Rich

That final midfield spot could go to Gordon too. Imagine some rotation for that spot

Keane is dodgy for me. Looks like they are in for tomori too which would help

I'm actually thinking of getting an Everton defender. Thought Keane would have been the safe pick there but maybe it's Coleman? Can't afford Digne.

Gordon was also on my radar as a 4.5 bench fodder. Everton have a host of mids now, will be interesting to see how they line up.
