Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope: Which FPL players are nearing a one-match ban?

Those who keep an eye on the Suspension Tightrope widget on our homepage will be aware that the yellow cards are steadily racking up for several Premier League players.

The respite provided by the final international break of 2020 seems like a good time to take stock of the disciplinary situation around the top flight.

The yellow card amnesty is not until after the completion of a team’s 19 league fixtures (more on that later), after which the threshold moves up from five to ten bookings.

Those Fantasy Premier League assets already sitting on three and especially four cautions still have a long way to go before they are in the clear, then.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

There is only one player who is currently a solitary yellow card away from suspension: Leicester City’s Jonny Evans (£5.5m).

The Northern Ireland international has managed to rack up four cautions in just five league appearances this season, the latest of which came in Gameweek 8.

With Caglar Soyuncu (£5.3m) a longer-term absentee and news awaited on the severity of Wesley Fofana’s (£5.0m) knee injury, the Foxes can’t afford to lose many more bodies at the heart of their defence.

Evans’ four bookings have come from just six fouls conceded, at least, so the experienced stopper is hardly flirting with danger on a regular basis.

ON THREE YELLOW CARDS

While Evans is out in front on his own on four bookings, there is a baker’s dozen of Premier League players who are just a caution behind.

Most are lower-owned FPL assets and/or agricultural midfield types but there are a handful of semi-popular options within the list.

Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) boasts a double-digit ownership, while Hector Bellerin (£5.1m) was among the top five most-bought defenders of Gameweek 8.

Those two players sit in 19.7% and 16.4% of the top 10,000 squads respectively.

John McGinn (£5.5m) saw his ownership increase sixfold after his early-season heroics, while Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.6m) own purple patch of form and penalty-taking responsibilities have seen him become the fifth most-popular budget midfield option under £6.0m.

Of the 14 players on three or four yellow cards, Klich has committed the most fouls. Indeed, only two top-flight players have fouled the opposition on more occasions than the Pole (19).

There are no surprises to see Oriel Romeu (£4.5m) on the above table: the Southampton midfield spoiler and emergency bench fodder option has racked up over ten times as many yellow cards as he has FPL attacking returns in his Premier League career.

John Lundstram‘s (£5.1m) name appearing on the list would have been headline news in 2019/20 but given his recategorization as an FPL midfielder, uncertain future at Bramall Lane and plummeting ownership, he is but a mere footnote this season.

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

As we mentioned in the introduction, the yellow card threshold is raised to ten after 19 league fixtures.

In most seasons, that would ordinarily mean after the completion of Gameweek 19 – but this is no ordinary campaign.

Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are a game behind the other 16 top-flight clubs, with word awaited on the rearrangement of their respective Blank Gameweek 1 fixtures.

We have also yet to see how a complicated-looking January schedule pans out, with the ‘Matchweek 18’ games split into two and sandwiching Gameweek 19.

And any unexpected postponements between now and then would, of course, further affect the ’19th fixture’ cut-off point.

The threshold for ten yellow cards is after 32 league matches, which will be mid-April at the earliest.

Players collecting ten bookings before that point will serve a two-game ban.

Punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

Would you rather have Martinez and Bamford or McCarthy and Watkins?

I think most would say the former based on the recent hot topic. Martinez is strongly favoured over McCarthy these days, and Bamford vs Watkins is too close to call. That said, I don't know.

Good points, I’m reluctant to sell Bamford, had him in for his hattie but Watkins is looking sharp and the fixtures are appealing. Ah the decisions that make or break...

Liverpool's next three games are LEI, bha, WOL.

United's are WBA, sou, whu, with a United player being (on paper) the best captaincy option for the first of those weeks.

Whether Salah is out for one game or two, to me it makes sense to just commit to Salah > Bruno for those three games.

GW12 is when you want Salah back as he faces Fulham while United face City. A nice, easy switch back as long as your transfers inbetween leave you with enough to cover the SP/PP difference.

I don't get your point? Obviously it wouldn't have been said if Salah hadn't tested positive. The fact that he could be missing one or two games is why you would sell him.

The question is when you then bring him back. My point is that once he's sold you don't really need him back until the Fulham game.

Why is Salah not 100% out of Liverpool's next fixtures? 25% likely to play on FPL app, BBc saying he 'could' miss them? I would've thought it was a dead cert that he had to isolate now?

I guess the newspapers don't want to confirm something that they can't confirm, and FPL requires maybe 2 sources to say he's out, or direct info from the club, I think, maybe, or something, and they don't have that. It's likely just a matter of time

Don't listen to him, do what you feel is right and get you the most points.

Jesus could haul in the games you get and be quiet in the games you transfer him out.

        Perfectly viable strategy.

Its good if you can do it without neglecting the rest of your team. If you have to take hits elsewhere to follow the plan then its bad, just stick with him for a long term stretch of game instead of hokey cokey.

The d and m have no order of preference. U do them at the same time. U have to solve the bracket first. So it can't be 9.

Once you're solved the brackets, you still have division and multiplication to go.... so you need to choose which order to do it. Left to right is apparently the way to go, though I presume many use (and were taught) the PEMDAS/BODMAS accronyms rigidly, which is what the tweeter is looking to exploit for engagement.

I don't know how to explain but the brackets don't disappear after the addition of the 1 and 2. U have to finish it by multiplying the 2 next to the brackets as well. Then 6 is divided by 6 to get 1.

I mean u can look at it as the equation telling u there are 2 ones and 2 twos being added together. I don't know how it can be looked at as 1 and 2 added and lets forget the 2 outside.

I know what you mean, but saying that it's 2 of whatever's in the brackets is the same as saying 2 multiplied by whatevers in the brackets. Maybe there's a notational difference between placing an 'x' and just leaving it next to the brackets, but I'm not qualified or interested enought o delve that deep haha. As far as my understanding goes, multiplication is multiplication, and excluding the 'x' to separate it from the brackets is just shorthand for that. Maybe the tweet is also playing on that confusion too. There's nospace even before the brackets, but I feel like that's to force the incorrect interpretation that you have to multiply first. I could be wrong.

Nope, it can't be both. If you want the answer to be 1 the you have to use 2 brackets, See below:

                        6 / (2 ( 1 + 2 ) )

Seems like the answer depends on how old you are! ... I would have said 1 but modern interpretation says the answer is 9

The answer depends on if you understand juxtaposition multiplication or not. It seems kids dont.

The reason they dont is because the overarching conclusion reached by academics is that everyone should be taught to write equations properly and not learn the edge case.

When you have done the brackets (parenthesis), then you have to write out the whole formula and start again from scratch.

              6 / 2 x 3

This now means you do divide first and then multiply.

Simple, the divide and multiple have equal rights. So starting from the left, you do which ever comes first. In this case it is 6/2 then multiply by 3. Therefore = 9

      "Bruno's Away Form"

In my opinion, he doesn't have a specific away form. If you look at the teams he's played when away, it clears it out. Brighton has been terrible at the back, the same with Newcastle. The Everton game was the exception, he was pure class in that game. I guess he's just been on a good streak against questionable defs, all-in-all a great pick. Trying to bring him in for Son.
