Can Everton’s FPL assets have a strong start under new boss Rafael Benitez?

Rafael Benitez’s return to the Premier League has caused quite the stir on Merseyside.

The former Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Napoli coach is back in Liverpool after an 11-year absence but has switched allegiance to the blue half of the city, following half a dozen years in charge at Anfield.

The 61-year-old Spaniard’s fourth stint at the helm of an English club has divided opinion in the north-west but what does it mean for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers?

Our Scout Report takes a closer look.

THE HISTORY

Benitez graduated through the Real Madrid coaching set-up to become the club’s B-side manager in 1993 but his first stabs at taking the hotseat elsewhere were ill-fated, with spells at Real Valladolid and Osasuna ending in ignominy.

Promotions with Extremadura and Tenerife preceded his surprise appointment at Valencia, the club with which his reputation was effectively built.

Benitez won two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup with the Spanish outfit before departing for Liverpool, with whom he sealed a memorable Champions League success in his first year in charge.

Five consecutive top-five finishes with the Reds didn’t translate into any domestic trophyware beyond a 2006 FA Cup, with his exit and subsequent short stints at Inter, Chelsea and Real Madrid perhaps hinting that his powers were waning – although there was a Europa League success at the Blues and his win percentage never dipped below 48% from 2000-2016.

There were two seasons at Napoli amid those short-lived stays across Europe, with a Coppa Italia in 2013/14 his last major piece of silverware as a club manager.

Unable to save Newcastle from the drop in 2015/16, Benitez led the Magpies back to the Premier League and secured two comfortably mid-table top-flight finishes with a limited squad before spending 18 months with Dalian Professional in China.

MANAGERIAL STYLE

Often labelled a defensive-minded manager, Benitez has been heralded for his organisational qualities and attention to detail.

The man himself told FourFourTwo in 2019:

I like tactics – I like to play chess and I like to play Stratego. I liked it when I was 13, when I was playing and taking notes, and at 17 I was a coach and a player at the same time at university, so I’ve always liked tactics. I went to Italy to watch Arrigo Sacchi, Fabio Capello, and Claudio Ranieri when he was in charge of Fiorentina. I travelled all around the world, analysing tactics.

Upon the journeyman Spaniard’s appointment at Goodison Park, the Guardian’s Jonathan Wilson pointed out that Benitez’s most successful managerial spells came at those clubs just outside of the European elite – which could be a good match for the Toffees:

With a training method based on constant repetitions and rigorous drilling, it can seem as though he is trying to mould his players into pieces he can manoeuvre around the pitch. He distrusts individual inspiration, which can bring conflict with bigger egos, but that’s an approach that seems more logically suited to a club of Everton’s status than Ancelotti’s ever did. Benítez’s biggest successes have come with clubs on the fringes of the elite – Valencia, Liverpool (as they were) and Napoli – where the organisation he attempts to instil, uninhibited by the egos of stars, elevates players to compete with more obvious starry names.

His all-time Premier League record betrays a pragmatic approach; Benitez’s sides conceded at a rate of less than a goal a game, scoring a solid but not spectacular average of 1.53 goals per match.

FAVOURED TACTICS

A proponent of a back four for much of his coaching career, Benitez’s teams spent much of the last decade either in a 4-2-3-1 (eg Napoli) or 4-3-3 (eg Real Madrid).

It was at Newcastle, where he was in charge of a squad with limited ability, that we saw him adopt a defence-first 5-4-1/3-4-2-1 – a system he also experimented with when presiding over a similarly mediocre squad in China.

Above left: Benitez’s Chelsea in their 4-2-3-1
Above right: Benitez’s Newcastle in their 3-4-2-1

How he sees the best approach for Everton being will likely be revealed in pre-season but the adoption of a wing-back system would certainly heighten interest in Lucas Digne (£5.5m).

Benitez moved Newcastle to a 3-4-2-1 from Gameweek 13 of 2018/19 onwards; from that point, Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) created more chances than any other Fantasy defender bar – you guessed it – Digne. Ritchie was a left-wing-back on dead-ball duties under Benitez, the same role that Everton’s French defender would presumably be occupying.

With Benitez rarely using two central strikers and instead often deploying two narrower inside forwards either side of an attacking spearhead, Richarlison (£7.5m) would also likely see his job remit change from the one he had in Carlo Ancelotti’s 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

A STRONG STARTER – GIVEN TIME

A full pre-season with Benitez, which started on the day of this article, bodes well for Everton and their Fantasy assets.

The new Toffees coach has a mostly excellent opening record with his new employers when given a summer to impart his “constant repetition and rigourous drilling”.

Just look at this rap sheet from the teams he joined ahead of a new campaign:

  • Extremadura: one defeat in his first 14 matches
  • Tenerife: two defeats in his first 14 league games
  • Valencia: unbeaten in his first 18 competitive games
  • Inter: one defeat in his first 11 Serie A matches
  • Napoli: five wins on the bounce, just two defeats in his first 15 fixtures in all competitions
  • Real Madrid: unbeaten in his first 14 competitive matches

Contrast that to his spells at Chelsea and Newcastle, clubs he took over midway through a campaign: the Blues and the Magpies were winless in their first three and four games respectively under Benitez before things turned for the better, having been deprived of a month or two of Rafa’s micromanagement in advance.

The exception to this general rule is Liverpool, where he lost three of his first seven Premier League games despite a full pre-season – although this is mitigated partly when we read that all three losses were away matches at clubs who went on to finish in the top six.

THE PROSPECTS

Benitez’s reputation as a strong starter after a full pre-season marries nicely with Everton’s opening fixture run.

The Toffees sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-10, meeting just one of the so-called ‘big six’ and enjoying some appealing home matches in particular.

Everton’s home form was woeful last season, something Benitez alluded to upon his appointment:

I think it is crucial for us to have the fans behind us. This year with the pandemic has been very difficult and football without the fans is totally different. I was following the form of Everton and obviously away from home, they have been fine but not so good at home. Why? Because they didn’t have the fans behind. It is crucial.

I am expecting the fans – and I know all the things that people talk about – but I am expecting the fans after one year of not going to the stadium to go and stay behind the team. We need the fans behind the team and I think they will be.

There-in lies the X factor with Benitez at Goodison Park: the fans.

He enjoyed unwavering backing from the watching public at Newcastle even when things were tough but he faces a much sterner task to win over the Everton faithful given his Red roots.

But it wouldn’t be the first time he has faced such hostility from his own fanbase, having encountered a similarly frosty welcome from the Chelsea support in 2012 – going on to finish third in the Premier League and win European silverware.

Any of the FFS chief bottle washers know when the H2H league will be fully updated? I've had my team set since FPL went live again, but not showing anywhere. Sneaked 5th place in 7-15 so should be in 6-X.

I see lots of mentions of him

But no one ever really addresses Havertz’ lack of game time beyond “but he started the CL final and scored”, or “Tuchel was figuring out his team and now he will definitely play him” or “they looked far better when Havertz played” which don’t really hold water for me as they’re basically just speculation when you drill down into it…

The evidence is Tuchel benched him 12 times in 19 games in the league - including on the all important run in where they desperately needed points to secure top 4

I’d probably give him a chance if I knew he was definitely nailed, but the evidence suggests he isn’t

He may start the first game but not the second, so be ready for his 1 point off the bench. For me, if City don’t sign Kane, the only player I’d consider is Ederson as he’s the only one guaranteed starts. I can’t be dealing with Pep Roulette anymore.

Mahrez and Havertz were straight in my draft too. I think you are missing out on some big mid price potential in Jota and Cavani. Much higher ceiling than pepe and buendia imo. Zero form to gauge so back the explosive potential and see where the chips fall. Doherty could be a gem at 5.0 too.

How have strikers historically fared under Benitez?

I.e, so we expect DCL to pick up where he left off (with 5 goals in his last 27 league appearances) or snap out of that rut like the hattrick he got against 10 men West Brom in GW2…

Sorry 5 goals in Everton’s last 27 league games

Very important delineation as he was injured for 5 of those 27, he got two assists as well in that stretch in fairness - but that’s still scraping the barrel

He has 36 returns in the last 2 seasons whereas Bamford has 28 returns in the last one season (and penalties!)

That freak red card in the first half vs West Brom really helped elevate his season up a notch last year - if that match had gone differently I don’t know if we look at DCL aThe same way we often do now

I never take into consideration form from the end of the last season into the new one. New season-new form, he might just as well go out banging like in the beginning of last one.
And i'm writing this from the stance of not having him in my team

See above - what really allowed him bangat the start last year was West Brom GW2 and the early red card - he’s a real confidence player and I think that kicked him on for weeks afterwards

How will his confidence fare under Rafa - maybe it will really suit him & he gets even better

Na I don't think he's a streaky confidence player. He's actually remarkably dependable and consistent. His purple patch early season was due to Ancelotti. For the first time he spearheaded a system that was designed to get DCL on the end of good quality chances. In the past DCL has been asked to come deep, get on the ball, hold it up, harrass defenders, make a nuisance of himself. He's very good at all that but it doesn't lend itself to goals for him (Great for Richarlison to feed off though). Ancelotti got him timing runs into the box to get on the end of things like a proper poacher instead and early season his midfield rebuild of James, Doucoure, Allan, Richarlison came out blazing and dominated opposition. DCL was the benefactor. Likewise his lack of goals was purely down to his lack of service. The midfield in general and James in particular fell apart.

Under Rafa DCL will learn a third role. He won't be isolated and shackled but he won't be the barely involved poacher either. Striker role for Rafa is generally a very involved complete forward that gets lots of support in and around the box.

“His purple patch early season was due to Ancelotti. For the first time he spearheaded a system that was designed to get DCL on the end of good quality chances.”

But what about DCL’s purple patch when Carlo first joined? He scored 8 goals in Carlo’s very first 9 games - then blanked in carlo’s next 12 games (all before Rodriguez or Allan had signed)

DCL has almost been the very definition of a streaky player when you take a step back and look at it - In the last 2 premier league seasons he has 29 goals…

10 of those came in a 13 game streak from GW16 to 28 in 2019/20… followed by no goals in 12 appearances from GW29-38 (with the same manager and same players as his “streak”)

Then the next streak - 11 goals came in 11 games from GW1 to 11 last season… followed by 5 goals in his next 22 appearances…

In fact, either side of those two streaks of goals - he has scored just 8 in his other 45 premier league appearances…

He goes through these big confidence driven boom bust cycles/streaks - basically if he had been any more of a streaker he’d be running around with no clothes 🙂

“He’s actually remarkably dependable and consistent” also just sounds so at odds with what we’ve seen from him under Ancellotti

For example - before his most recent streak (GW1-11 last season) he had failed to score in 12 consecutive appearances, and after that streak he managed 5 goals in 22 appearances… all under ancellotti…

I do actually like watching him though, his hold up play has gotten very very good towards the end of this season, but the streaks of goals (and streaks of no goals) have been such a feature of the last couple of years, it’s a bit concerning

I can't find the link now but there was a post some time ago that said when fit and available, James was selected to start more than any other Chelsea player under Tuchel. No idea if correct or not but caught my eye - if you have a decent bench to cover it seems a good decision to me. He's in my draft at present

Of Tuchel’s 19 league games in charge, he benched James in 7 of them and started him in the other 12

But interestingly - he did start him in 6 of the final 7 league games, and 8 of the last 10

That’s probably as nailed as it gets with Tuchel tbf

Probably what Soto Ayam said, but I have Sarr in my current draft - we know he can do well in Prem and was ripping up the Championship towards the end of last year

Currently have sarr and Buendia, for what is worth. Sarr as 5th mid. He did well last time in premier League, and was in great form once the new manger arrived at Christmas.

Do you have fodder 3rd striker? Sarr bit extravagant as 5th mid otherwise.

Yep, and that's the worry. I'll be playing 352, with 2 7.5 forwards.

        Still got it though!

Not many players try to trick dribble through three in the box and then set up a teammate so well.

      Rate my Euro team please
Using my 5 free transfers (Schick>>Immobile, Lukaku>>Dolberg, Meunier>>Bonucci, Spinazzola>>Maguire, & Sarabia>>Sterling) this is the team that I end up with:
      Pickford—Simon
      Alba—Shaw—Maguire—Bonucci—Mæhle
      Insigne-Sterling-Hojbjerg-F.Torres-Grealish
      Kane—Immobile—Dolberg

There are ways that I could get Morata, Chiesa, Emerson, Donnarumma, etc into my team if I switch around my sub strategy, but this was my first attempt. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

        Strong looking team to me.
Have you considered going all in on England defense? I guess that would mean Stones over Sterling though with the 6 max.
Honestly it’s hard to think of anything wrong to me.

      5th transfer preference

      1. Stek > Pickford (as a backup to Donna - may not need/want)
      2. 5th defender. Could be either a cheap (P Torres or Di Lorenzo) or any price, depending if I go for Insigne or Chiesa.

I can’t decide which is better.

I think Mount is an interesting idea. Torres on the right wing against Spinnazola’s replacement will be interesting too.

Ferran for me I think. But I like the amount idea.

Neither nailed but at least with Torres you will find out before KO, plus he has a higher ceiling (though not really against Italy). My worry with Mount is that Southgate plays 5 at the back and Mount drops out, can't see him starting on the right in a 3 up front and Kane and Sterling are locked in.

Emerson/Di Lorenzo worth a punt? Any risk of not starting?

We’ll know the lineup if you can wait till the last 90 minutes before the game starts.
I am - want to know about defense and also the mids for both Italy and Spain.

Everton are such an unknown quantity at this stage. Let’s hope the new signings are promising otherwise those nice fixtures could be a bit of a red herring. Richarlison is off to the Olympics so won’t be around at the start of the season. I think Digne is the only one that interests me.

Not a fan of triple Brighton especially if they lose white, I think kdb is over priced and just don’t see the logic of going with only 1 Liverpool player with those fixtures

Other than that I love it 🙂

But in FPL you can find out about that in rules. There is not a single word about that in Euro Fantasy rules.
