The best FPL midfielders for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard

Having already assessed the best goalkeepers and defenders on offer, our position-by-position analysis of the stand-out Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for a Gameweek 4 Wildcard continues as we take a look at the midfielders.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

BEST PREMIUM MIDFIELDERS

Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1 2

Having already combined two goals and two assists this season, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) is the standout premium midfielder on offer.

The Egyptians 13 goal attempts ranks top amongst all midfielders, while he has also supplied three big chances for his team-mates. His immediate fixtures suggest that he can be a key captaincy pick, too:

While the fixtures are good, they perhaps don’t have enough appeal to warrant a Liverpool double-up, which in all likelihood rules Sadio Mane (£11.9m) out, though it is worth noting that he sits joint-top with Salah for shots in the box this season, with 11.

Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) remains one of the most popular FPL picks, though it is harder to make a case for him following back-to-back blanks, plus the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

Last season, Fernandes was Manchester United’s talisman, finishing with an excellent 244 FPL points. However, with Ronaldo now in the team, it may well reduce his Fantasy appeal, especially if he were to take on penalty-taking duties.

Also consider…

Son Heung-min (£10.1m) has produced two double-digit hauls already this season, via two goals and four bonus points, though it is worth noting that Tottenham Hotspur’s fixtures do take a turn for the worse following Gameweek 4.

And unfortunately, it’s a bit too early to consider Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m), despite a possible return to the Manchester City bench at Leicester City in Gameweek 4.

BEST MID-PRICE MIDFIELDERS

From Gameweeks 5 to 10, Leeds United sit top of our season ticker for ease of fixture, which promotes Raphinha (£6.5m) in our thinking.

The Brazilian has already delivered a goal at home to Everton in Gameweek 2, with set-pieces giving him the edge over team-mate Jack Harrison (£5.9m). There has also been talk of a possible no. 10 role in light of Daniel James’ (£6.0m) arrival, which is something to monitor moving forward.

However, at the time of writing, there is uncertainty surrounding his availability in Gameweek 4, with possible FIFA sanctions hanging over several Brazilian Premier League players.

Diogo Jota (£7.6m) is likely to earn significant interest if Roberto Firmino (£8.8m) is sidelined with a hamstring injury. The Brazilian limped off shortly before half-time during the 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in Gameweek 3, and was expected to undergo further tests.

We’re still awaiting an update on that, but if he were to miss a spell, Jota could well become one of the very best midfield options in the game, given his impressive per 90 minutes stats in 2020/21.

Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ fixtures are about as good as it gets between Gameweeks 4 and 9.

Despite losing three in a row, Bruno Lage’s side have faced three tough opponents in Leicester City, Spurs and Man Utd, and for those eying up their assets, the underlying numbers do point to a change of fortunes.

In his new left-wing role, Adama Traore (£6.0m) has attempted 12 shots and created nine chances for his team-mates so far. How his performances stack up against weaker opposition who will naturally sit a bit deeper remains to be seen, but his goal threat numbers are encouraging.

Francisco Trincao (£5.9m) also deserves a mention, though the fact he was hooked after 69 minutes in Gameweek 3 is a slight concern, especially with Daniel Podence (£5.5m) lurking.

Adama Traore (left) v Francisco Trincao (right) goal threat statistics 2021/22

Mason Greenwood (£7.7m) is more appealing than team-mate Paul Pogba (£7.7m) right now, given the Frenchman’s deeper role at Molineux in Gameweek 3, though his position in the starting XI isn’t 100% clear following the arrival of Ronaldo.

Also consider…

Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m) has produced eight shots and created eight chances so far, with a particularly appealing set of fixtures coming up – Wolves (h), Norwich City (a) and Newcastle United (h).

However, if you are focusing on longer-term picks, Mason Mount (£7.5m) is a solid investment given Chelsea’s fixture swing in Gameweek 7. The Blues midfielder has claimed two assists in the first three Gameweeks, and should benefit from Romelu Lukaku’s (£11.5m) excellent hold-up play in the final-third.

Like Salah, Said Benrahma (£6.4m) has combined two goals with two assists so far, though his underlying numbers (see below) do suggest that he might struggle to continue delivering at his current rate in the coming weeks.

Midfielders ranked by expected goal involvement (xGI) delta 2021/22

Finally, we should also touch on Man City’s midfielders, with the usual rotation risk caveats.

Ferran Torres (£7.1m) has thrived up front for Pep Guardiola’s side this season, returning 18 FPL points in Gameweek 3 alone. For some, a run of out-of-position starts for the champions is tempting, but with De Bruyne and Phil Foden (£7.9m) back in training, how many minutes he can get beyond Gameweek 4 is still a bit of an unknown.

BEST BUDGET MIDFIELDERS

Calvert-Lewin on Everton penalties - but Ings stays second in line at Villa 3

Demarai Gray (£5.6m) has impressed for Everton in his three league games for the club, scoring his first Toffees’ goal against Leeds United and following it up by giving Rafa Benitez’s side the lead at Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 3. Now the challenge for the winger is to perform consistently week-in, week-out, something he was often criticised for not doing while at Leicester City.

Emile Smile Rowe (£5.4m) is an alternative option, if you believe Arsenal can kick-on with several key players returning of course.

From the bargain options, Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) has been taking set-pieces at Norwich City, while Moussa Sissoko (£4.5m), Allan (£4.5m), Yves Bissouma (£4.6m) and James McArthur (£4.5m) should at least offer appearance points each week.

It is not news that Ronaldo was going to isolate for five days when he arrived in UK, that was reported clearly as soon as it was known he was heading back (after getting suspended for Portugal's other game).

Neil Custis, tabloid hack, is simply making a speculative clickbait story out of that b intimating he therefore might not start against Newcastle.

No need to sing it from the rooftops - though that's exactly what Custis wants you to do on behalf of his tabloid rag, the fact you've added a link will only please him more.

Yeah, always a possibility. Isolation makes no difference really, though, just sounds good and dramatic in Custis's little non-story

Wait ‘til the end of the week and see if Ronaldo’s pictured in training and what Ole says.

Lukaku has a minor injury also.

If I had Bruno I’d probably just keep unless Ronaldo is a cert. Two blanks and people forget he’s absolutely class.

Beginning to think not worth any hits to get in Ronaldo- if DCL fit he has 3 good fixtures and the sensible play might be Ings to DCL on my one free transfer- selling Bruno before home game v Newcastle when there is still some speculation over whether Ronaldo will start and when we don’t know situation on penalties seems risky. This team look good or would you take plunge? Bruno to Torres would be -4 move to fund Ronaldo

    Harvey Barnes debate:

Is any owner keeping their faith in him or is he out of your squads? After City, Leicester’s fixtures look superb right up to week 14/15. I still think he’ll come good - he’s playing under the right manager too!!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I still see him as the standout value option in the Leicester attack. Vardy is pricey, pity Iheanacho isn’t getting the starts his performances deserved from late last season. I’m holding firm with Barnes. I still believe.

He’ll haul eventually, but doesn’t really justify his price at the moment as both personal form and team form are shaky.

Cheers for your thoughts guys - yes Leicester haven’t exactly hit the ground running tbh and he has cost me 0.2m also but given those fixtures after City he’s a great prospect still in my view and I don’t want to splash 10.0m on Vardy. I feel I still want Leicester investment.

I'm keeping Barnes. Last season as well he started very slow and didn't get going until before Christmas. When he got going though, he was on the verge of making the Euros before injuring.
Leicester don't look right only because they have almost their entire back line out.
Evans, Fofana, Castagne missed the first two, and Justin. Even the two they brought in Vestergard and Bertrand got injured and ill.
Despite this they have still won 2 out of three while playing average.
I've got Vardy and Barnes, and keeping them all season. Big Leicester fan.

Can’t be in training till Thursday.

Regardless of who he is, how good he is, not many prem managers would Chuck a new purchase in from the start. Especially a game they are expected to win and have an in form striker option who’s not been away internationally this week ( Greenwood) and Cavani fully rested

Wednesday absolute earliest I’ve read though thursday most likely.

Bruno is a worry given his game vs Azerbaijan,

Genuinely think Greenwood is a captain option if not Salah

Hmm can only bring in Greenwood via Bruno right now. Salah back to being the “safe” option!

How reliable this is I’m not sure. https://mobile.twitter.com/UtdDistrict/status/1434896717699112966

  21. Quarantine info for returning internationals
    Twisted Saltergater

Good article here on the quarantine rules following the World Cup qualifiers, and how it affects West Ham players. The same rules will apply to the players of all other Premier League teams too. Will be interesting to see how this impacts Bruno Fernandes who is due to play Azerbaijan tomorrow.

    https://www.football.london/west-ham-united-fc/news/west-ham-southampton-coronavirus-vaccine-21467332

"West Ham, along with the majority of Premier League teams, have done their best to protect their players and this has meant any player who was due to travel to a country on the UK Red List has been prevented from doing so. As such, Michail Antonio is only available for Jamaica's home match against Panama and will not travel to either Mexico or Costa Rica to represent his country.

Of the other nine Hammers internationals, none were due to travel to Red List countries, with the majority of matches taking place in nations on the Amber List.

However, that does not mean all players will necessarily be available for West Ham's next Premier League match. A positive test either prior to or post arriving in the UK would mean the player would have to isolate for ten days. The vaccine status of a player could also affect their availability for the trip to St Mary's.

When returning to the UK from Amber List countries, as all ten internationals will do, a number of steps must be taken upon arrival.

If a person is double vaccinated they must take a COVID-19 test on or before their second day in the country. If this is negative the player will be able to link up with the squad for training and the league match against Southampton. However, if the player has not been vaccinated or has not been fully vaccinated they may not be available for the September 11 clash.

A person who is not fully vaccinated must quarantine for ten days upon arrival in the UK, or take part in the Test to Release scheme. Even if, as expected, a player uses this scheme there is still a chance even with negative results they miss the September 11 match.

To be available for the trip to Southampton an unvaccinated player must return to the UK by, at the latest, September 7 but realistically September 6 in order to qualify for a day 5 test the day before the Hammers' match. With a number of West Ham players in international action on September 7 and 8, if they are not fully vaccinated they will not be involved in the trip to take on the Saints."

Could be carnage this weekend with team selections. Considering Salah(c) and loading up on players that haven't joined up with their countries.

No doubt PL clubs will try and circumnavigate the rules, so this could all be a storm in a teacup come Saturday.

      Very very interesting.

Interesting to see if managers are willing to share this information too. Some have kept this quiet before.

Could be utter carnage which makes playing a wildcard just to get Ronaldo in mental

Azerbaijan’s on the Amber list. Anyone who comes back from there is fine to carry on as normal if they’ve been double jabbed with a jab recognised by the UK.

        • 15 Years

Yes, that is correct. However, clubs are being secretive on who has (or hasn't) been double vaccinated, as this is medically confidential information.

Expect a lot of, "we've a few of the international lads out" come the weekend press conferences.

I have no idea about that. But I am assuming that any clubs who have players with that criteria would have been more reluctant to let them go if they knew they were missing a game on their return. I expect very few surprises.

No, not just Gray, if you’d cruelly do some research there are players either side of that price point if you just gauge either way.
Why would I have a problem with that? Everyone is entitle to think who will be better for their team.
